Review: Focusing on less reissued than so far unissued soul music, Super Disco Edits are invigorated to share this blitzing slice of sweet soul by Popeye. Starting 2025 with a killer pair, both these tracks were written in 1978 by James Clifford; in contrast to the Rick Astley limelight-hogger to claim the name, 'Never Gonna Give You Up' is a superior, if more humble record, effortlessly encapsulating the essence of romantic 70s disco-soul. Clifford's vocals feature centre stage, woozing in a kind of acedic listlessness mired in lustful fascination. 'Be My Baby' contrasts with a relative cosmic funk slow jam.
