Oh Jabba (12")
Cat: FXHE IGNIT. Rel: 11 Dec 12
Deep House
  1. Oh Jabba
  2. Space Age Steppin
Review: FXHE remain in outer orbit following that stellar Triangulum Australe 12" from Omar S, presenting their final transmission of a superb year in the shape of Oh Jabba, two tracks of stargazing house music from O B Ignitt. Last seen collaborating with Omar S on the dedication to Eddie Murphy's finest acting role, the impression that Ignitt likes his cinema is only strengthened here on the Star Wars referencing lead track with some deliciously lo fi art work of that slug like character on the inner label dispelling any possible doubt. The track itself is a wonderfully simple yet melodic house track, crunchy drum machine rhythms rippling away feverishly beneath a calming array of swooping Rhodes and Moog flourishes. Complementing this, "Space Age Stepping" is a more searching affair, relying more on the rugged drums and gurgling analogue bassline to achieve lift off.

  1. It's Time For Us (5:09)
  2. Synth Spackle (Omar S remix) (6:12)
Review: Ob Ignitt's OBONIT label is fast becoming the hottest joint in Detroit for grainy, DIY house music from the heart. The big man is back with the excellent groove of "It's Time For Us", a classic, smoked-out house cut with the perfect blend of soulful samples, and 80's-leaning synth jamming. Over on the B-side, kingpin Omar S - a close associate of OB these days - remixes "Synth Spackle" with his inimitable touch, slamming down a dusty cascade of drums and an instantly hummable bassline. Sick, tipped, and hotly recommended. Have no doubts.

  1. My Last Reese Cup
  2. Let It Do What It Does (Omar S mix)
Review: Having recently struck out on his own, Ob Ignitt joins forces with Detroit pal Omar-S for the first time since 2012's seminal Wayne County Hill Cops Part 2 12". On the A-side, Ob offers Omar-S "My Last Reese Cup". There's little peanut butter goodness to be found, but rather a chunky, snare-heavy breakbeat house groove, spacey atmospherics and a seriously chunky bassline. On the flip, Omar-S gives his interpretation of "Let It Do What It Takes", with sweet, darting electronics and deep house textures complimenting a typically Motor City flavoured house groove. Impressively, it also boasts a surging sub bass line that sounds particularly booming on club soundsystems.

  1. Juiced Up (7:46)
  2. Weekends (5:47)
  3. Hello Day (6:12)
Review: Besides a cheeky cameo with DJ Overdose on Berceuse Heroique last year, pretty much all of Omar Harper's work in recent years has landed on his own Obonit imprint. Now on release nine, it's an immaculate body of work... This included. Painting from a very Detroit palette, Omar fluffs us up nicely with the unhurried soft-focus house groove "Juiced Up" before "Weekends" opens up into more soulful pastures with a narrative style feel where the pianos tell a tale of understated triumph. Finally "Hello Day" jacks and pops with skippy kicks and synths so wet you'll need a towel. Mind the gap.

  1. Ob Ignitt & Brian Kage - "On The Run" (7:43)
  2. OB Ignitt - "All We Do" (6:08)
Review: Detroit bad man OB IGNITT returns to our charts with a two-tracker for his own OBONIT imprint, and the producer is joined by fellow Detroit producer Brian Kage - a man who has been churning out badness on the low-key since about 2004, and who has already appeared alongside Omar-S on FXHE. The newly formed duo kick off with "On The Run", a light and bumpy house attack with plenty of samples, blazing melodies, and an altogether 'upper tone' approach. On the flip, Ignitt comes through solo with "All We Do", a piano-led house charmer with a hefty level of kicks and bass, Detroit styleee!

  1. Jefferson Reserve (6:47)
  2. Calm Of Night (7:31)
Review: Considering the spacey title, artwork and long-standing Detroit credentials of both Luke Hess and Omar-S collaborator Ob Ignitt, you'd expect these two tracks to be on the intergalactic side. Happily, they are. The duo kicks things off with "Jefferson Reserve", a tactile, floor-friendly chunk of energetic deep house blessed with classic electrofunk bass, deep space pads, and the kind of glistening, far-out synthesizer melodies you'd expect to hear the Cantina Band play in one of the Star Wars movies. They move further towards techno territory on flipside "Calm of Night", where warring lasers fizz between the speakers whilst progressive house-influenced chords and rhythms propel the track forwards at the speed of light.
