Hammer & Sickle
Fear Of Gadaffi
Nettle Cloth
Baize Tents
Review: Early on in Muslimgauze's (Bryn Jones') career, the musician released two ultra-mysterious releases on the equally mysterious label Hessian, which some speculate might've been comprised entirely of Jones himself. Hammer & Sickle was one of these two early LPs from the faux Arabic auteur, and was notable for its distinct lack of any back cover artwork (who needs a visual stimulus when you've got such great music on board?). Though still indicative of Jones' work as Muslimgauze, superfans will note that this release sounds a little more formative than some of his later releases, owing to its lessened use of Middle Eastern instrumentation and sparser production in general. B-sider 'Fear Of Gadaffi' is the most intermittent in this regard, revelling more than anything in the simple effect of spring delay on sampled, freeform perc hits.

Review: Staalplaat continue to take care of Bryn Jones' Muslimgauze legacy, here presenting a vinyl edition of the Kashmiri Queens album they originally released as a limited CD edition in 2001. Some of the tracks had previously appeared on the Nadir Of Purdah EP in 1995, but as a whole this release reframes them in the broader context of the wholly unique soundworld Jones crafted for himself and his music. There is a range of moods on offer, with synthesis and meditation more prominent than the abrasion sometimes associated with Muslimgauze, especially on the extended trip of the second track.

Review: Here be another posthumous release by Muslimgauze, the prolific and controversial project of the late Bryn Jones, an obsessive musician who dedicated his life to making music inspired by the struggles and conflicts of the Muslim world. Eye For An Eye was recorded in 1993, around the same time as his classic Veiled Sisters, and features a similar blend of ambient dub and tinkling, wacked-out beats. Nevertheless, its body is simply four long pieces, unfurling subtle changes in rhythm and texture over time. Be thankful for this reissue, as it originally only came out as part of Staalplaat's subscription series.

Review: 'Arab American Radio' is one of Muslimgauze's rarer cassettes, salvaged from his impressive vault in 2020. Spanning unusual genre experiments for Bryn Jones, from big beat to house, it moves away from his preferred experiments in dub, in favour of horrible noise bursts and integrations of steel hangdrum and electronic beat. There's even a rather weird attempt at jungle on the B1, which we'll wager doesn't follow the 4/4 time grid.

Review: Pulled from the labyrinthine archives of the eternally mystical Muslimgauze, Muhammadunize was originally released as the first disc of Fatah Guerilla in 1996. It was recorded and mixed at the Abraham Mosque in Manchester, and it captures the essence of Bryn Jones' imperious project in perfect form. Drawing heavily on Arabic musical motifs and fusing them with a haunting post-industrial sound palette, there's nothing else in the musical world quite like Muslimgauze. This particular reissue also features 'Intifadah (Extended Remix)', which originally came out in 1988 on the Iran release. This vinyl pressing is a must for fans and new arrivals to Jones' work alike.

Review: Bryn Jones was nothing short of an enigma. The UK producer managed to ensure his work would always be regarded as a collector's item while simultaneously ensuring very little chance of success outside the farthest flung reaches of the experimental electronic and noise communities. Putting out over 90 original albums for 32 labels in his time under the Muslimgauze moniker, all of which were very limited releases, his ideas were as impressive as the inspiration was staunchly political.

Not that you would necessarily be able to tell from the tracks themselves. Taking elements of Middle Eastern, Arabesque, dub, industrial, and percussive electronica, his work is born from deep dives into Muslim culture and history, and the finished results were wildly ahead of their time - atmospheric, musically adventurous, hypnotic and, more often than not, unarguably danceable. Such is the case here.

Review: Staalplaat continues to mine the extensive archives of the late, great Bryn Jones AKA Muslimgauze, this time via a suite of untitled tracks unearthed on an unfinished cassette. According to the label, the nine "Zilver tracks" were recorded straight to tape in the producer's home studio in February 1995, four years before his tragic death. Musically, they explore similar themes to his other work, combining redlined IDM, electro and dubtronica beats with Arabic melodies, spooky electronics, Middle Eastern percussion, enveloping ambient chords and spoken word samples lifted from news reports and documentaries about the Middle East. While undeniably rough around the edges, Feel This Hiss is every bit as immersive and intoxicating as the material Jones released during his lifetime.

Review: First released in limited numbers on CD back in 1996, "Return of Black September" remains one of the late Bryn Jones AKA Muslimgauze's most celebrated and notorious releases. Here it finally gets a release on wax, with the original album being stretched across two slabs of wax with the addition of two archival recordings produced by Jones during the same period (they're both simply named 'Black September Sessions'). It's a superb set all told, with the sadly departed producer mixing and matching dark ambient tones, spaced-out field recordings, Middle Eastern percussion, mind-altering dub effects and more forthright IDM rhythms to typically inspired and off-kilter effect.

Review: He may not have been on this planet since the late 1990s, but the late, great Bryn Jones continues to dazzle from beyond the grave. The latest in a long line of posthumous albums offers another chance to own one of his greatest moments, 23-minute 1996 cut "Arab Jerusalem": a superb sound soup rich in atmospheric field recordings, snatched Arabic radio chatter, hazy ambient electronics, sporadic bursts of hand percussion and unearthly female vocal snippets. Perhaps more alluring for dedicated fans are the three previously unreleased tracks that Staalplaat has plucked from the Manchester producer's vast archives. The standout is undoubtedly "Jordan River", a twenty-minute chunk of sparse, mind-altering electro-dub/ambient dub fusion from the DJ Spooky school of "illbient" that's simply essential.

Review: Bryn Jones' innovative and seminal works marked him down as a cult artist, politically motivated for the Arab-Palestinian cause and a seminal experimenter of the ethnical samples. Initially released by Staalplaat in 1999 (the same year of his passing away) as part of the Box Of Silk And Dogs it is very different from the exotic and ornamental processing of certain world music. "Ingaza" is thematically and stylistically all over the place, sporting atmospheric instrumental loops and jarring, heavily barbed and distorted beats. The only threads linking these tracks were made during Jones' grittier production/dub days during the last years of his life.

Review: While the legendary Muslimgauze had, indeed, put out a striking amount of music while he was still alive, 1995's Maroon has gone somewhat unnoticed and underappreciated. Originally out as a CD via Holland's Staalplaat, the imprint have (RIGHTFULLY) decided to release it on vinyl format for the first time, which is literally music to our ears! The Manchester artist, who has been sorely missed since 1999 (RIP!), has inspired a whole generation of artists, most noticeable the likes of Skull Disco and Shackleton. The structure and the aesthetic of the arrangements on this thing is pure GAUZE, coming through with a rhythmic sway of glitch, Eastern vocal swarms, and something altogether more 'tech'. He was, surely, one of the greatest pioneers of the 80s and 90s, and his music should simply be heard, not discussed. We're pretty sure that you'll be stuck in a trance from the moment that first beat drops. 10/10.

Review: More rare and previously unreleased recordings from the late Bryn Jones aka Muslimgauze have been collected by Staalplaat on the Ali Zaarin LP for their Muslimgauze Archive series. As it says in the liner notes "Even more than most Muslimgauze releases, "Ali Zarin" sounds like it could have come out 20 years ago and be equally contemporary." In all its three parts, the harsh textural and bass driven proto- IDM experiments of "Ali Zarin" were so ahead of their time like the vast majority of Jones' other works. There are several untitled tracks simply titled "Demo" which feature exotic middle eastern rhythmic journeys that are more familiar of his work and also captivating enough for the legend's most discerning followers

Review: During his lifetime, Manchester-based producer Bryn Jones was unfeasibly prolific. During his most productive period in the early 1990s, he would record and release an album every week. The most notable thing about his productions, though, was his explicit support for the Palestinian liberation movement (despite, bizarrely, not being a Muslim or ever visiting the Middle East). His brand of tribal IDM was heavily influenced by traditional Arabic music, too, giving his protest works an intoxicating authenticity. Satyajit Eye, first released in 1993, is arguably one of his greatest works. Here, the original album is accompanied by three tracks from Vote Hezbollah, a similarly minded set recorded in the same period.
