Live At The Barbeque (4:36)
Large Professor (3:11)
Review: Main Source cut a sharp figure when they broke through in the early 90s, made up of Toronto's K-Cut and Sir Scratch and New York's Large Professor. Their debut album Breaking Atoms is one of the greatest from that golden era for hip-hop, and there's no shortage of hot tracks to pick for a 7" pressing, but here Japan's P-Vine picks out the classic 'Live At The Barbeque' and backs it up with Large Professor's own self-titled joint. This is early 90s hip-hop at its best, boiled down on a handy little single for those moments when you just want the hits.

Looking At The Front Door (4:12)
Snake Eyes (3:33)
Review: We've been treated to a few revisits of tracks from the mighty Main Source and their seminal debut album Breaking Atoms, and now P-Vine are pressing up two of the best on a crafty little 7". 'Looking Out The Front Door' is a stone cold classic through and through, riding a dense and dusty break as Large Professor laments on love gone wrong. Despite the downcast lyrical theme, the vibe of the track is sun-kissed mellow gold, thanks in no small part to the buttery Rhodes licks. On the flip we get 'Snake Eyes', the opening cut from the album which cemented Main Source's legendary status back in 1991.

Fakin' The Funk (3:33)
He Got So Much Soul (He Don't Need No Music) (3:37)
Review: After the breakaway success of their monumental debut album Breaking Atoms, Main Source came correct with 'Fakin' The Funk', a single in between albums which called out anyone not true to the roots of hip-hop. Now P-Vine are continuing their run of choice 7"s drawing on Main Source's legacy with a tasty repress of this classic joint, backed up with a cut from Breaking Atoms for good measure. 'He Got So Much Soul (He Don't Need No Music)', another stellar example of the realest deal from the golden era of rap.

Live At The Barbeque (4:36)
Review: Mr Bongo has been shining a light on the work of Main Source (aka Queens native Large Professor and Toronto's Sir Scratch and K-Cut) for a while now. Their latest reissue - after plenty of other 7"s last year- is Just Hangin' Out, which is an ode to the simple pleasures of relaxing with friends. The a-side is made from two huge samples (Vanessa Kendrick's '90% of Me is You' and Sister Nancy's 'Bam Bam' ) to make for a stone cold and swooning groove. On the flip, 'Live at the Barbecue' is often said to be one of the finest posse cuts of all time.

Looking At The Front Door (vocal & instrumental) (4:14)
Watch Roger Do His Thing (vocal & instrumental) (4:23)
Review: Mr Bongo come through once more with a first UK issue of this slice of hip-hop history. It is the lead single from Main Source's Breaking Atoms album and is one of two such 45s the Brighton label, shop and archivists are putting out. Undisputed rap classic 'Looking At The Front Door' goes first and ride son nice loose drums with oft sampled bass and off course some fine MC work. On the flip is another gem, 'Let Roger Do His Thing', which is darker, more hard hitting and with some DJ scratching for extra streetwise sagger.

Review: Mr Bongo continue to shine a light on classic hip-hop with their excellent curated reissue series. They have two Main Source 45s in their sights and this is the second. When it first came out on Actual Records, it soon sold out and became a much sought after piece with copies going for high prices on the second hand market. And for good reason - the band really hinted at the greatness they would go on to achieve with an impeccable three minute rap single making a massive mark. 'Think' is a superb example of how to take well known samples and flip them into something fresh.

Review: Wild Pitch Records was eventually the label that showcased to the world the Queens native Large Professor and Toronto's Sir Scratch and K-Cut as Main Source. But before that, the pair actually self-released their debut on Actual Records, and it went on to become a hard to find, much in demand 12". The greatness that was to come was hinted at on the music with superbly concise raps and tight production that made for two faultless singles. 'Think' takes plenty of well known samples but makes them sound fresh and 'Atom' does the same, with humour, bragging and positivity all colouring the bars.

Think (3:32)
Think (instrumental) (3:31)
Review: It was way back in 1989 when Main Source made their debut with a double A-side single featuring "Think" and "Atom". Here the latter track is given a seven-inch reissue, with the group's original version being joined by a flipside instrumental. The joy of "Atom", aside from the band's high-octane, delay-laden vocals, is the vibrant, party-hearty nature of the backing track. Bass-heavy and blessed with crunchy, club-ready drum breaks, it features extensive samples (horns, guitars etc.) from Marvin Gaye and Tammi Tyrell's 1967 Motown classic "Little Ole Boy, Little Ole Girl". These give the track a soulful and funky feel that's guaranteed to put smiles on faces.

Looking At The Front Door (instrumental) (4:11)
Review: To our ears, there are few greater golden era dancefloor hip-hop workouts than Main Source's "Looking At The Front Door", a stone-cold classic that remains a much-played anthem decades after it was originally released. Here the 1990 jam gets the reissue treatment. It's available in both vocal and instrumental versions, with both sides doing a great job in showcasing the duo's killer beat - a fine mixture of crunchy drums, woozy electric piano chords, scratched-in samples and toasty bass. Naturally it's the vocal version that we'd reach for more often than not - the trio's flows are particularly good on 'Looking At The Front Door' - but the instrumental is nevertheless a useful tool to have at your disposal.

Watch Roger Do His Thing (4:15)
Watch Roger Do His Thing (instrumental) (4:16)
Review: Canadian/American hip-hop crew Main Source released some sublime music during rap's "golden era", with both of their albums remaining stone cold classics. "Watch Roger Do His Thing" was never quite as successful commercially as its predecessor, "Looking At The Front Door", but is nevertheless a quality bit of conscious rap. For the uninitiated, the 1990 cut is based around loose, slack-tuned drums, weighty bass, jazzy organ flourishes and bass so fat it probably has its own postcode. This edition pairs the superb vocal version with the under-celebrated instrumental, both of which appeared on the song's original single release.

Think (3:35)
Think (instrumental) (3:34)
Review: Joint American/Canadian hip-hop group Main Source were late 80s, early 90s hip hop giants, right from the off. The reason? Their debut single, "Think", was an immediate hit: the hard hitting rhymes and crisp boom bap struck a cord and went on to become a hugely sought after 7". Now it gets a proper reissue with the original piano hooks, busy scratching and big horns all sounding fresh as ever, while the instrumental on the flip provides an alternative take. For a slice of OG hip hop goodness, there are few finer tracks.
