DJ Sotofett & Skatebard - "Decoded Satellite" (9:30)
Lauer & DJ Sotofett - "Privat & Scharf" (DJ Sotofett Synth-Dub-Mix) (9:19)
Review: Skatebard's Digitalo Enterprises label hits release number 20 with the boss himself linking up with felt cult hero DJ Sotofett for one tune, while the oddball producer also goes solo on a remix. Italian dance music is very much in focus here but as seen through a new, weird and wonderful lens. 'Decoded Satellite' distills menacing synth drones with a pounding groove and Italo disco synths are stripped of all joy and repurposed as prowling late night miscreants. Flip it over for a much more airy and libidinous DJ Sotofett Synth-Dub-Mix of Lauer & DJ Sotofett's 'Privat & Scharf.' Serious stuff.

Our Beat Is Still New: After Take
Cat: WPHNEWBEAT 4. Rel: 21 May 14

Deep House
FCL aka Nick Berlin & Max Erotic - "It Began In Belgium"
Lauer aka LAUGIC System - "Planet Barty"
Locked Groove aka Frank De Wolf - "El Rio Negro"
Innershades aka Fatal Riot - "Massive Overdose"
Review: We Play House's Our Beat Is Still New series has been something of a soar-away success, introducing a new generation of DJs to the distinctive, heavily electronic midtempo pulse of Belgian new beat via a constant stream of tribute tracks from contemporary producers. Predictably, there's more to admire on this fourth and final 12", not least the bass-heavy throb and rubbery electronics of Locked Groove's tribute to Belgian new beat/techno legend Frank De Wulf, "El Rio Negro". Elsewhere, young rave revivalist Innershades drops the moody and intoxicating "Massive Overdose", while Lauer impresses with the winding synths, juddering drums and saucer-eyed pads of "Planet Barty". FCL's stomping "It Began in Belgium" - all cheap electronics and proto-acid tweakery - is also pretty darn good.

The Lifesaver Compilation
Cat: PLAYRJC 024. Rel: 30 May 13

Minimal/Tech House
Roman Flugel - "More Is Not Enough (Heaven Or Hell?)"
Lauer - "Hector"
San Laurentino - "Final Landing"
Tuff City Kids - "People Is A Crackhead" (Tuff Hamlet riddim)
Review: Established as a record label some four years ago, Live At Robert Johnson have really come to the fore as representing the best of contemporary European deep house alongside the likes of Dial and Running Back. Here, the Frankfurt institution returns to their recent triumphant Lifesaver compilation with this addendum 12" release featuring the productions from Roman Flugel, Lauer, San Laurentino and Tuff City Kids. Flugel opens proceedings with the rough and moody "More Is Not Enough" which brandishes a beat that can't help but get in your face. This is complemented by the calmer, sumptuous New Beat stylings of Lauer's "Hector" and the richly colourful "Final Landing" from San Laurentino. "People Is A Crackhead (Tuff Hamlet Riddim)" is not only the best track title in a hot minute but yet another original dancefloor slayer from Gerd Janson and Lauer's Tuff City Kids, opting for the Germanic digi dub meets tuff house route.

Harmony Unit (5:32)
Betone (5:35)
Frizzante (7:03)
Playa (5:10)
Review: Bordello A Parigi looks to lowkey but high-class German artist Lauer for a fine four-track exploration of the similarities and differences between deep house and disco. The sentimental 'Harmony Unit' kicks off with lush chords that lead to starry eyes and raised hands then 'Betone' has chugging grooves and spangled chords under longing vocal coos. 'Frizzante' brings the dazzling disco brilliance with pinging analogue drums and bright arps and 'Playa' closes down with a playful and tooting vibe that recalls the classic 'Inspector Norse.' It is the final piece of a fantastic EP.

Vizzi Vazzi (6:51)
Review: If ever there was an EP that summed up Philipp Lauer's loved-up approach to dance music, it's this outing on Running Back. Full of dreamy chords, bold synthesizer riffs, kaleidoscopic electronics and floor-friendly rhythms, it's an unashamed soundtrack to Balearic sunsets and Adriatic sunrises. Opener "Philipper" sets the tone, offering a rush-inducing romp through dream house aesthetics, Italo-disco chug and Italo-house drums. Over on the flipside, "Muscle" is the sound of Patrick Cowley after a night dancing with the Pet Shop Boys on a beach in Rimini, while closer "Vizzi Vazzi" has all the loved-up charm of a celebrated late '80s Shep Pettibone dub. In other words, the whole EP is an exercise in ear-pleasing, floor-friendly positivity.

Prazctok Memoriam (1:23)
Review: Following five years of label surfing - including full-length excursions for Running Back and Permanent Vacation - Phillip Lauer returns to Live At Robert Johnson. Happily, "Tearsh" sees the German producer at his melodious, life-enhancing best, with the title track sounding like a giddily loved-up fusion of the Pet Shop Boys, Balearic disco, and super soft-touch deep house. The sun-kissed, Mediterranean mood is explored further on "Antinat", and the Italo-influenced dancefloor cheeriness of "Jetdentist". Arguably best of all, though, is "Deass", a thrilling combination of heavy, proto-house percussion and sparse, late night synth lines.

Brisk (6:21)
Kilian (6:12)
Review: The unstoppable force that is Philip Lauer is back, but this time on Bristol institution Futureboogie. The man is a studio genius, there's just no doubt about it and he conjures up some real magic from the ghosts in the analogue machines on these two tracks. "Brisk" is totally epic main room house for the headlining set; check the absolute monster bassline on this one. Is this actually Lauer? It sounds totally brilliant anyway. On the flip it's more like the Frankfurt studio magician that we know with "Kilian", an emotive, retro flavored journey with uplifting pianos, epic arpeggios and those unmistakably Lauer-ish male choir synth presets. Brilliant!

Stigma
Review: Phillip Lauer seems to reserve his best material for Tim Sweeney's Beats in Space label. His 2012 single for the imprint, "Muscat Ring Down", is arguably his strongest release to date. This belated follow up is, if anything, even better. "Hands & Feet" is particularly potent, delivering a surging, glassy-eyed fusion of nagging piano hooks, 303 tweakery and punchy drum machine percussion. "Stigma", meanwhile, sounds like a long lost instrumental '80s pop gem from the more mature, British school of E'd-up productions. Think True Faith era New Order mixed with the Pet Shop Boys circa 1990's Harold Faltermeyer-produced Behaviour LP, and you're close. Top stuff.

Ward
Review: Last seen working under the Hotel Lauer guise with little brother Jacob for a release on Live At Robert Johnson, Phillip Lauer's seemingly tireless production ethic finds the Frankfurt-based musician pitch up once more on Permanent Vacation. The Munich stable is one of several labels Lauer has contributed to over the years, though you have to go back to 2010 to his last 12" for Permanent Vacation. So the sight of the Donner Lake 12" should be a welcome one for Lauer fans, and the three tracks find Phillip in effervescent form. Lead track "Hershel" is dominated by those trademark supple Lauer rhythms and a nice proto house groove, whilst the title track finds him in a more contemplative mood. Hit the flip for a wonderfully melodic slab of kaleidoscopic beatdown called "Ward".

Review: Recent times have seen Gerd Janson and Phil Lauer focus on developing their Tuff City Kids project into a fully fledged production unit, with a EP on Delsin complementing the usual raft of remixes the pair get involved in, which include Internasjonal, Phantasy, DFA, Visionquest and Mojuba this year. This new Running Back record sees the pair revert to their other successful ongoing partnership, with Janson as label owner and Lauer as artist. Entitled Laui XIV, this four track 12" is the first solo Lauer record since last year's superlative BIS transmission and lives up to the label's billing as "Post-house-proto-disco-trance rockets fuelled by new wave and sound transmissions from middle-wave Caucasus". Lead track "Tyler" is a particular delight, filled with the sort of effervescent, rich sonic qualities that Phillip has made his name on!

Review: While the recent news from Gerd Janson regarding a decision to slowly peel back on his duties as a music journalist is undoubtedly a blow to the art of composing sentences, it will undoubtedly free up more time for him to focus on ensuring standards at Running Back HQ don't slip. This second 12" off cut from Lauer's recent LP is a clear example of these standards with Runaway and I:Cube employed to sprinkle their own production ideas on the punky chugger "Tentatious". Jacques and Marcos Runaway call shotgun with a heavily percussive and decidedly more energetic rendition than Phillip's original, while I:Cube flexes his synth playing muscles with a Turkish disco pumper of a remix. Heck Lauer even slips in two prime slabs of all new house on the flip - need anymore enticement?

Afro National - "Push Am Forward" (3:42)
Review: There's naturally much to enjoy on the latest volume in Africa Seven's A7 Edits series, which pairs original - and usually obscure - old Afro-disco and Afro-boogie gems with fresh 21st century edits. This time round, the A-side is all about Kemayo & K System's piano and horn-heavy disco-funk jam 'Biram', a two-minute blast of dancefloor exuberance that Phillip Lauer cleverly re-imagines as loopy, locked-in chunk of Afro-disco/disco house fusion. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour Afro National's heavy, low-slung stomper 'Push Forward', a cut that brilliantly adds chanted vocals and Hendrix style guitar solos to a sweaty, non-stop groove. Al Zanders does a great job in ratcheting up the tension and heaviness on his accompanying club-ready extension.

Review: DJ/producer Philip Lauer from Frankfurt has teamed up with Berlin vocalist Dena to create a modern take on Julie Stapleton's soulful house classic, containing multiple versions. Lauer's Hotel Lauer EP on Especial in 2016 cemented his position in the scene, with albums for Permanent Vacation and Running Back. Dena, born in Bulgaria and raised in Berlin, has released electronic dance-pop stylings on Kitsune Music and K7. The EP features a Club Mix, a Demo Mix, a deep tech remix by DJ Slyngshot, and a drifting Balearic version for late summer nights and dawn.

Boris Dlugosch, Marc Romboy & CAR - "Survivor" (Johannes Albert remix) (6:02)
Review: Germany's always club-ready label Frank Music is back with another beefy 12" that finds mainstays and newcomers unite in fine fashion. Johannes Albert and Lauer open up with a trio of collaborations that go from full throttle, chord led house on 'Based on Boss' to the deeper grooves of 'Four 44' and far sighted, soul drenched tech of 'Posh-O-Rama'. Boris Dlugosch, Marc Romboy & CAR step up on the B-side with the woozy and hypnotic 'Survivor' which also gets remixed by Johannes Albert into something more raw. Useful grooves for sure.
