Review: A new Lone album from Matt Cutler represents an about turn away from the more mellow tones found on 2014's Reality Testing back in favour for the rave tropes that characterised his output circa Pineapple Crush. The nine tracks on Levitate are rife with the energetic fervour of hardcore and jungle, blending peppy tempos and nimble drum licks with the trademark graceful melodies one would expect from a Lone record. You should be familiar with "Backtail Was Heavy," already been premiered via a phone line service and "Vapour Trail" which formally announced Levitate and the other seven cuts from Lone show Cutler is at the top of his game.

Bass
  1. Airglow Fires
  2. Begin To Begin
Review: **REPRESS** Bringing his madcap colourful styles back to R&S once again, Lone has another slice of sunkissed wonderment to impart, this time in a concise two track single. "Airglow Fires" leads in on the most joyous choral pads, only to be surpassed by even more bright and bold chord stabs which tell you this is going to be a party rocker. The beat comes ripping in to bounce off that opening riff and of course it flexes with a dexterity of unconventional means that reassures you Lone is in no danger of going soft any time soon. There is perhaps a more linear flow to the track which is no bad thing, making for a more focused and reliable party starter whilst retaining that inimitable Lone kink. "Begin To Begin" is less outre in its intentions, but equally funky as it hops around on a snagged house groove while the melodies chime out all around the depth and breadth of the mix.

Techno
  1. A Mind's Eye Melody (7:53)
  2. Looking Glass (5:59)
  3. Under Cherry Blossoms (Minds Eye reprise) (6:19)
Review: Long before it became the done thing to pay tribute to the loved-up, saucer-eyed bliss of Italian dream house and early British rave, Lone was producing killer dancefloor material that drew heavily on these styles. It's perhaps fitting, then, that the long-serving producer has returned to these roots on the second edition of his Ambivert Tools series. This is best exemplified by the lolloping drum machine rhythms, "Pacific 808" style chord progressions, and blissful synthesizer flourishes of "A Mind's Eye Melody", which is as colourful and loved up as a sunrise hug following a pretty momentous night out. The rushing bliss continues on "Under Cherry Blossoms (Mind's Eye Reprise)", a near overwhelming chunk of intense ambient beauty. Tucked in between you'll find the picturesque techno hustle of "Looking Glass".

Review: While now revered just as much for his kaleidoscopic, all-action club tracks as his similarly colourful downtempo explorations, it should never be forgotten that Lone began life as a maker of skewed, head-in-the-clouds beats. For this fine contribution to the DJ Mix series, the DJ/producer has decided to take us on a whirlwind tour of his influences and inspirations, brilliantly joining the dots between sunrise-friendly ambient, melodious electronic, blazed hip-hop, dazzling experimental beat-scapes, loved-up house and futurist techno. It's a thrillingly eclectic set, but one that holds together brilliant. While this is in part due to the use of a number of his own productions, it's also testament to his immense skill as a DJ.
