  5. First Lights (parts 1-4)
Review: Melbourne-based Brit Kloke returns, once again joining the dots between a myriad of styles - IDM, Detroit techno, ambient and jazz - in his own inimitable way. The First Light EP is one of his strongest sets to date, and is built around an innate sense of atmosphere. While there are more dancefloor-centric cuts - see the fuzzy industrial swing of the Autechre-inspired "Dark Summer", and the interplanetary swagger of the Motor City themed "Space & Time" - Koke comes into his own when exploring sparser or beatless pastures. Nowhere is this more successful than on the 10-minute title track, a blissfully melodious and immerse ambient piece in four parts.

  6. Unlearning
Review: Aussie producer Kloke steps up to the far-reaching Styles Upon Styles imprint with a collection of deep and distinctive flavours. His sermon begins with the washy, brushy textures of "Deep City" that chugs lazily with deep house muscle but ambient spirit. "Mayfield", meanwhile, ebbs and flows mournfully over a bed of sad organs. Further on we hit Burialesque muffled anthemia ("Ritual"), we get zoned out by the tripped chops and overlaps of "Room With A View", we step back to the early 80s with the dramatic synthesis of "Flood" and end on a subverted electro high with "Unlearning". Strange and complex yet charming and immersive, Kloke has created something genuinely unique here.

Drum And Bass
  1. Big Trouble (6:15)
  2. In Focus (6:10)
  3. Russian Troll Farm (6:07)
  4. Travels In Hyper Reality (5:54)
Review: Heavyweight material from Fresh 86 as always. This time we see the mysterious Kloak step up with four pressurised roll-outs that stink of foundations but thrust deep into the future. "Big Trouble" is all about those switchy processed breaks, "In Focus" flirts around the rim of a black hole, pulling us in and out of perspective while "Russian Troll Farm" provides the trippiest punch with its dense weave of reverse breaks. Finally, "Travels In Hyper Reality" ends on a dreamier Good Looking style. Floaty, emotional... But loaded with bite. Get your devices out.

PHONE (12")

Bass
  1. PHONE (6:55)
  2. Rhythm #1 (5:17)
  3. PHONE (Hieroglyphic Being remix) (11:23)
Review: Brit in Melbourne Kloke follows up previous releases on this impressive NYC label (and sterling effort in 2014 on Sub Squared) with something different. The intense Latin percussion workout of "PHONE" sounds like Sergio Mendes on steroids in this relentless epic, while "Rhythm #1" is more restrained in its exotic execution. Jamal Moss does an impressive job as ever on the remix. His analogue hardware jam turning the track into something else completely.

Drum And Bass
  1. Artificial Memories (6:15)
  2. Other Worlds (6:56)
Review: Time to wrap up again. Melbourne's Kloke lands on Coco Bryce's Diamond Life with two heartfelt nods to the foundation era. Choppy breaks, dreamy synths, unpredictable twists and turns galore; "Artificial Memories" is pure concentrated drumcraft that's dynamic and wild but also delicate and steeped in more rushes than J Majik's private lake. "Other Worlds" is even more far out. Distant chords, more processing and filters on the breaks and a pitch bend that will make you feel like you're floating. Watch out for those pipes on the way back down.
