Good Love
Bad Love
Review: House heavyweights from Poland and Bulgaria combine for the latest Dirtybird release which sees Catz N Dog pair up with KiNK once again for the double dropping Love 12". Offering good and bad versions of the emotion everyone craves, these two cuts play masterfully on the respective strengths of those involved with "Good Love" destined to be heard across festivals this summer. Naggingly clever female vocal manipulation from Catz N Dogs binds seamlessly with KiNK's punchy grooves and rubbery bassline, whilst the trio offer a decidedly more tech-house flavoured reduction on the flip-side "Bad Love" version with more of KiNK's darker tendencies evident.

Review: All hail Hypercolour, the small and independent UK label that has quietly but very assuredly gone about its business on its own terms. The label run by Alex Jones and Jamie Russell now gets to the significant milestone of 100 releases deep and over the course of all that music it has never bowed to trends or got stuck in a rut. There has been deep house, ragged techno, bassy party starters and colourful curveballs for all, and now Bulgarian synth shame KiNK steps up with a suitably solid EP to mark the occasion. It's characterful and inventive techno with banging drums and great samples. Big up to all.

Room To Jack (feat Redeye) (6:27)
Raredub & KiNK - "Scrambler" (6:17)
Review: Over the course of his career, KiNK has delivered countless robust, TB-303-driven monsters inspired by 120-130 BPM house and techno. On 'Hyper Epic', he's decided to mix things up by opting for breathless, high-octane beats of the sort more often associated with trance, the 140 scene and the speedier end of Euro-techno from the early '90s. For proof, check the cut-up vocal snippets, barmy bassline and sweat-soaked beats of 'Wake Up' (perhaps a tribute to Laurent Garnier's legendary early 90s party Wake Up! Paris), the slamming drums, warped bass and sharp electronic lead line of 'Beep Beep' and the sleazy, rave-igniting madness of Raredub hook-up 'Scrambler'. Best of all though is Redeye collaboration 'Room To Jack', an acid-fired warehouse banger of epic proportions.

Review: Acclaimed live act Strahil Velchev aka KiNK is said to have been a vital ingredient of Cocoon's ecstatic nights on the island over the years. The man from Sofia offers up a recording of one of his explosive performances there, featuring well known tracks and exclusives alike on what the label best described themselves as a 'spontaneous tour de force through the history of electronic dance music.' The Bulgarian hardware maverick takes the best of The Windy City and The Motor City alike, and all the while adding his distinct magic touch. It's a wild ride from start to finish, with peaks coming in at moments like that of "The Russian" with its massive Detroit style chord progressions, the heads-down and direct techno attack of "Kink In De Kabel" through to last year's thrilling anthem "Perth" and the uplifting "Disco Transition".

Perth (Dusky remix) (6:15)
Teo Techno (Radio Slave disco dub) (10:16)
Review: As the matter-of-fact title makes clear, this 12" is the first in a series of EPs offering up fresh reworks of tracks from KiNK's superb 2017 album "Playground". These revisions are, we'd suggest, rather large. Check, for example, the celebratory rush that is Dusky's rambunctious reworking of "Perth", which builds on waves of luscious chords and snappy beats before turning into a stab-happy, riff-heavy main room slammer of the highest order. Arguably even better is the druggy, metallic pulse of Radio Slave's ten-minute "Disco Dub" of "Teo Techno". It doesn't sound like disco, of course, but rather a throbbing, angular trip into Berlin techno territory that's as mind-altering as it is heavy.

Yom Thorke (Matthew Herbert Funnel dub) (8:13)
Five (Josh Wink 2 = 23 interpretation) (8:04)
Review: Bulgarian hardware maverick KiNK released the Playground long player back in late 2017 to much acclaim, and now re-appears on Gerd Janson's Running Back with a nice remix package. Following the first edition which featured reworks by Dusky and Radio Slave, Strahil Velchev gets Mr. Minimal himself - the inimitable Matthew Herbert - to provide a Funnel Dub of "Yom Thorke". This one is a reductionist exercise in hypnotic polythyrhms and it is to quite stunning effect. On the flip, the legend from Philadelphia Josh Wink steps up to deliver a hi-tech rendition of "Five" where the Ovum Records boss delivers an energetic techno perspective of the most timeless variety.

The Universe In Her Eyes
Review: Strahil "Kink" Velchev may well be the hardest-working man in dance music. Each new-year brings a succession of fine singles, with little in the way of fluff or filler. Even so, the vast Playground is only his second album to date (his first, "Under Destruction", appeared in 2014). It is arguably his strongest collection of tracks to date, though. Over the course of the 12 tracks, he brilliantly demonstrates the depth and variety of his influences, variously turning his hand to cinematic downtempo beats ("Samodiva", "The Universe in Her Eyes"), warehouse-friendly peak-time anthems (stab-heavy smasher "Russian"), DJ Sneak/Dj Duke-style big room house ("Perth", 'Organ"), mind-altering experimental dub ("Peter Piet Pete"), Industrial ("Tate of Metal") and, of course, angular analogue techno ("Five", "Teo Techno").

Antitune (feat Walmon) (4:16)
Review: Bulgarian house wizard KINK is back and, of course, he's all about delivering the shadiest forms of dance floor music humanely possible. The man is a master at twisting and pushing house music to its very limits, something which is obvious from the start of "Soda Caustic", a nutty 4/4 banger boasting a curious new strain of acid at its core. "Synesthesia" barely even forms a groove out of its solitary bleeps and bass buds, whereas "Daddy Acid" takes a little poke at AFX's improbable mishmash of Goa trance and gabber junglism - we love this one. The B-side boasts "The Roots Of Techno", a kinetic array of machine noise and robotic beats, while "Antitune" makes some of Photek's early work seem antiquated by comparison. This EP has it all. Warmly recommended.

Review: The Bulgarian don returns to DGTL with two originals and four cool creative tools for our pleasure. "Dynamo" has an air of Bodzin about it thanks to the strident trance-like uplift and restrained momentum that builds on its own euphoric terms. "Neutrino" is the complete switch; a gnarly and alarming piece of techno that relentlessly twists, morphs and when the sweeping bass comes in, takes you to places you didn't know existed. Precision as always from Kink.

Review: Hot on the heels of his debut 12" for Clone Royal Oak - the jaunty, swinging deep house shuffler that is "Valentine's Groove" - KiNK returns to the Dutch imprint. It sees label mainstays Serge and Alden Tyrell join forces to deliver a scorching rework of the previously unheard "Beats". As you might expect from the basement-loving duo, it packs a serious punch, thanks in no small part to their surging drum machine rhythms and expert use of build-and-release arrangement. The experienced pair are masters of creating and retaining energy, and their percussion sounds are always as jacking as they come. In other words, it's another club slammer.

Review: Having previously starred on an unfeasibly large number of labels (including Rush Hour, Ovum, Liebe Detail and Burek), Kink adds another to the growing list. Cloud Generator marks his first appearance on Running Back, and contains, in the words of label boss Gerd Janson: "music for big rooms, wide eyes and small brains". In some ways, it's an apt description. Undeniably old skool in outlook, the EP's four main tracks variously doff a cap to vintage European techno (the blistering title track, which comes complete with many early '90s Belgian trademarks), hands-in-the-air, hardcore influenced techno (the saucer-eyed riffs and booming low end of "Diversion") and twinkling Balearic house ("Pocket Piano", which also gets a rave-era breakbeat re-touch).

Review: KiNK's technical prowess has long been a known trait of the Bulgarian producer's music, and here on Marco he gets to stretch-out his intellectual, avant garde-self more than what he's ever done for other labels like Burek, Ovum, Boe or liebe*detail. After a long career which, release-wise, dates back to 2005, he's delivered for the most-part straight up house and techno. But here, after all these years, his debut LP sees KiNK twist his synths and contort his grooves to sound, well, very Macro. Take the confused bleeps and brash drums of "Summa Technologiae" and "Kakavida" or the interdimesional electronics and Hare Krishna chinqs of "Povreda" for example. But for some real dancefloor toughness it's tracks like "Sintezator" and "Source OF Uncertainty" that do the trick, while for something a little more disco look out for the album's penultimate track "Tel". Go KiNK!

Express
Review: Kink, real name Strahil Velchev, has always been known to deliver a high dosage of disco-filtered funk in his records and this latest instalment on Holland's Rush Hour is no exception. The main mix of "Hand Made" dives head first into a fast-paced beat which points directly to peak time play. Once the bouncing groove has been given space to establish itself, Velchev introduces the soulful vocals of Rachel Row to play over the beat with frankly epic effect. The dub mix emphasises the disco-house vibes created on the main mix but injects sharper concoctions of high-hats and rimshots for more DJ-friendly uses. "Express" takes a darker approach to things and keeps on building until we're left with a nasty electro groove for the small hours.

Review: What's that Liebe Detail Spesial? Three tasty and varying remixes of KiNK's dusty box jammer "Detunator" from last year on one 12"? Yes please we'll take some of that thank you very much. Adam Port teams up with Daniel Wilde and dukes it out with La Force and Matias Kaden for the honour of top remix and it's the latter "German tech-funk institution" who calls shotgun on a typically ripe, driving remix that given the all to apt suffix 909 The Drumqueen. On the flip, Daniel Wilde's vocal contribution helps further shift the subtle arrangement from Port away from the beast that is the Bulgarian's original while La Force cranks up the atmosphere-ometer on his pads well past 15!

Review: Macedonian techno imprint Argumento drop a statement of intent with this split EP which will get lots of headlines thanks to the presence of KiNK. "Bust Out" sees the Bulgarian techno don team up with vocalist Milenta for a spinal acid techno thumper, all shuffling drums, dusted bass throbs and intermittent Balkan synth stabs. Elsewhere Alex Arnout & Floyd Lavine team up on "South Beach" a nicely paced minimalist jacker crammed with plenty of filtered vocal samples, whilst Aleksandar Tanchevski goes for the peak time jugular on "Rerun". Finally "Chunkossa" sees Marko Nastic drops some neat Compost style jazz tech house delivered with Serbian panache.

Review: Boe Recordings first release of 2010 sees the London imprint launch the first in a series of various artist EPs. This release adds further credence to the rule that new Kink is always good Kink. "Kiss The Sky" sees the Bulgarian in inspired form, soaking a crisp percussive punch in swathes of delicately orchestrated chords which are reminiscent of Pepe Bradock's finest moments and complemented perfectly by the vocal harmony of Rachel Row. Iron Curtis marks his debut for Boe with "Backup," a superlative faceoff between handclaps and 808s with a driving melody. Finally Ladzinski is invited back after last years The Deep End EP and offers up "Diamond," a real example of hypnotic jacking house music with some subtle instrumental touches.

The Long Wait
Review: Releases such as this render the necessity for additional hyperbole useless, as the simple facts involved ensure it will fly off the shelves. KiNK & Neville Watson return after a two year hiatus with their third release for the Rush Hour offshoot Hour House Is Your Rush with two raw visceral cuts that typify their signature Chicago meets Detroit sound. "Metropole" is immediately gratifying, an energising flux of vintage Detroit chords rising and falling in unison with the thumping and obligingly loud kick drum. It's pure peak time sleaze complemented by the analgesic hypnosis that washes over your senses when the flipside track "The Long Wait" unfurls in all its glory. A much rawer beat is doused in increasingly psychedelic circles of concentric melodies that twist with lysergic energy whilst the most devilish of acid basslines throbs beneath. The arsenal of superlatives to describe Rush Hour is rapidly depleting.
