Review: Shogun knows how to throw a party... Their "100" celebrations started in March and they're still going strong three months later! A chance for the label's artists and friends to stretch their skills and signatures, there's been some really exciting, subversion work throughout the series. This final piece in the puzzle is no exception; Fourward deliver their funkiest track to date, Karma gets all soulful, Total Science get all drifty and ethereal while Break simply reminds us why we love him. All four cuts glistening with long-lasting gold, Shogun can carry on celebrating their 100th release for as long as they like as far as we're concerned.

  1. Her Touch
  2. Salute
Review: Cyantific's label expands their roster and remit right here with new signing Karma. Peddling a classical, rolling sound that references D&B institutions such as Good Looking and Metalheadz across the two sides, Karma complements label-mates such as the synth-heavy Dimension really neatly. The emotive roller "Her Touch" isn't dissimilar to a Bcee or Hybrid Minds track, all lush jazzed out chords and smouldering vocals. "Salute", meanwhile, is a much darker cut where a steppy riddim is sharpened with menace and a tiger-like bass texture growls ominously. Two shades, one vinyl; Cyantific have delivered something special here.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Father Father (feat Oezlem Cetin - Marcus Worgull remix)
  2. Are We? (feat Michelle Amador - Tony Nwachukwu remix)
  3. All You Ever Wanted (feat Jerome Stokes)
Review: The "Father Father" remix takes you on a hypnotizing trip inside your bleeding soul. Worgull isolates two single lines of Oezlem Cetin's soulful sermon and creates a deep and dark dub version with many references to Detroit and old school Chicago. A future classic which shares the same vibes as Henrik Schwarz rework of "Walk A Mile In My Shoes". On the flipside is a nice reinterpretation of "Are We?" by Tony Nwachukwu (Attica Blues), another friend of the Karma Boys, which features Michelle Amador's sweet vocals over a minimal Detroit flavoured techno jazz excursion keeping the odd waltz time signature of the original and flipping the tune into an atmospheric future shuffle.

Review: After a long break from working on new Karma material, the Cologne based duo (known for the classic "High Priestess") is now presenting "Latenight Daydreaming", their first new in seven years. Great pop songs influenced by Carole King, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Brian Wilson, Hall & Oates, Lovin' Spoonful, Terry Callier, Earthy Folk, library sounds, soundtracks, The Zombies or J Dilla. After careful assembly in a studio somewhere in the enchanting German Westerwald, their new album, "Latenight Daydreaming", is in your hands. It has been crafted with a little help from fine vocalists Michelle Amador, Oezlem Cetin and Jerome Stokes (based in San Francisco, Hamburg and Manchester respectively) and displays a new facet to their sonic explorations: Pop music with a certain deepness. After challenging the club music of the early to mid 90s combining club music with jazz influences, making the transition via drum n bass and downtempo soundscapes, you now hold a perfect pop record in your hands. Taking the cue from cuts by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Carole King, Hall & Oates, Brian Wilson, Lovin' Spoonful, Creed Taylor, Marcos Valle, the Zombies, Jay Dilla, Terry Callier, Linda Lewis and Soundtrack/Library music, amongst a host of others. Smooth orchestral elements, a nod to neo soul and jazz instrumentation, Earthy Folk elements and a curtsy to the waltz, recalling the virtuosity of classic pop albums of the late 60s and early70s...

  3. Are We? (feat Michelle Amador radio edit)
Review: Starting in the mid 90's as a club music project combining jazz with drum & bass and downtempo soundscapes, Karma have moved in the last decade from a purely sample based approach to a more organic, classic studio sound. This remix EP comes with two killer remixes by I:Cube from and Cologne's Pascal Schäfer, the man who turned "Carte Blanche" into a Detroit-ish techno track. Plus a radio edit of "Are We?", one of the standout album tracks.

  1. Heal (6:04)
  2. Rumblefish (4:45)
  3. Flee In The Fog (feat Dubtro) (4:32)
Review: Japanese dub stepper Karma resurfaces on Innamind with a deadly 12" exercise in bass science; welcome news for anyone that caught his previous contributions to Vivek's System label and that Back To Chill compilation from Goth Trad. The Heal 12" sees Karma dip into his personal armoury of dubplate weapons for a triplet of deadly cuts with Innamind welcome recipients. Dread vibes run deep through the title track which features some mind-bending sub bass deployment - we gotta hear this one on a big rig!! "Rumblefish" crams all manner of abstract found sound into a taut, almost 4/4 rhythm with dystopian results whilst closer "Flee in The Fog" finds Karma working with Dubtro on a production where the space between elements is key to creating tension.

  1. Terrorist (5:27)
  2. Cha (4:31)
  3. Vacant Mind (6:03)
Review: Dub-wise explorer Karma returns to Kursk's Innamind label, with his first release of any description since mid 2015. "Terrorist" is a seriously weighty concoction, with slick, soulful, echo-laden vocals riding a tough, soundsystem-friendly dub riddim, ricocheting effects and warm, mind-soothing sub-bass. Flipside "Cha" is an altogether different proposition, and sees Karma successfully return to his dubstep roots via dark and moody electronics, punchy drums, throbbing sub-bass, and just the right amount of brain-melting vocal stabs. The pitched-down, dub techno influenced haziness of "Vacant Mind" completes a fine package.

Deep Dubstep
  1. Bluefoot (4:43)
  2. Choose Life (4:26)
Review: Since 2015, deep dubstep explorer Corin Bornoff AKA Karma has put out one EP a year. This year's was delayed, it seems, but it has finally appeared - just as 2018 is wheezing its' last, scarlet-faced breath. Opener "Bluefoot" was arguably worth the wait, though. Built around a skewed but still stepping, reggae-fired dubstep "ridim", the track shuffles along on a wave of hushed shakers, ultra-deep sub-bass and intergalactic dub-wise effects. Over on the flipside, "Choose Life" is surprisingly positive, with Bornoff wrapping ear-catching synthesizer melodies, alien electronics and UK steppas style bass around a punchy drum track.

Review: You can do this the easy way or the hard way... Whether you untie your shoelaces or not, your shoes are going through the window the second "Unchained" drops. Signs has officially levelled up. Bringing up the rear are Friction and Karma with a walloping roller where the bassline takes a much more active role in the story than it would in a more typical liquid cut. "Turn To Nothing" is Ed.It at his finest; restrained, barbed and tooled up with a sharp sample. Finally North Base close the show with their most delicate track to date as "Unexplained" shimmers with Technimatic-level pianos. Don't even think about fetching your defenestrated footwear.
