Review: Detroit legend Jeff Mills' returns with an exciting new LP, and as always, there's a deep concept behind it. Mind Power Mind Control explores various techniques used for mind control, the deceptive techniques devised for such purposes and its power over people. Similarly, the music on offer here is incredibly hypnotic - this is a Mills album after all - with each track's complex sonic tapestry sure to entrance you. All of The Wizard's idiosyncrasies are on offer: immaculately programmed 909 rhythms underpin majestic strings and sublime tones, all delivered with his trademark style of futurist minimalism. While less dancefloor oriented than some of this revered DJ's previous releases, it's awe-inspiring nonetheless. Essential listening.

Review: Given his stargazing, intergalactic ethos, it's perhaps unsurprising that sci-fi techno overlord Jeff Mills has decided to mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo XI moon landing by releasing an album containing his musical "interpretations of Earth's moon". As you'd expect from an artist of Mills' standing, it's a very good album. Evocative, atmospheric and hugely spacey - this is Jeff Mills after all - the seven-track set moves from scene-setting, string-laden ambient ("Control, Sattva & Rama") to sparse, acid-flecked dub techno ("Electromagnetic") via a string of fine cuts that variously touch on electro-fired broken techno ("Stabilising The Spin"), Steve Reich style minimalism (the brilliant "Lunar Power"), and semi-orchestral electronic positivity ("The Tides").

  2. When The Time Is Right (Only For The Night) (6:06)
  3. Something Like That (Moody mix) (6:27)
Review: Jeff Mills and the Zanza 21 project have been workmen away on this new one for sometime. It is an accumulation of ideas that take jazz principles and apply them to electronic music, or more specifically the theory that "music is most useful at the point when it touches the soul of the listener, until then, it's just sound." As such Jeff layers up his acoustic and electronic instruments - all of which he plays himself - into star gazing tunes with rich astral melodies and big, bulky grooves that are easy to attach yourself to but hard to forget. This is the first of many releases that are already done and dusted, so keep your eyes peeled for more.

Review: Last year Detroit techno stalwart Jeff Mills launched a new project, The Zanza, an ever-changing collective of jazz, Latin and electronic musicians who could help him explore his love of a wide variety of styles and genres. Following on from the project's debut release, Mills has now delivered a debut album that once again proves not only his versatility as a producer, but also the vivid, widescreen nature of his musical vision. Wonderland is not an ambient or techno album - though it does contain multiple nods to the latter - but rather a hybrid affair that draws great influence from Latin music (and samba in particular), jazz in many forms, dubbed-out electro, jazz-funk and, on the rushing 'The Time Is Tight', organ and piano-heavy gospel house.
