Drifting (12")
Cat: PHORMA 013. Rel: 12 Dec 18
  1. Drifting (6:18)
  2. Parallel (11:01)
Review: Japanese hypnotic techno hero and Prologue alumnus Iori returns, following up a great effort on Jeff Deringer's Oktave and some terrific remixes on Dreiklang and Bitta. He returns to Stockholm's Phorma for the first time since 2014 (when he provided a rework for nAX Acid) with "Drifting" - another serving of ethereal and utterly sublime dub techno geared for sonic immersion on the dancefloor. On the flip, he goes deeper down the spiral on "Parallel" with an injection of swirling melodies, airy pads and other hypnotic elements on this fine example of mentalist techno nailed down pat by a modern master.

Review: Long players from L'estasi Dell'oro, D.A.R.F.D.H.S and Kartei signalled a move into artist albums from Dutch label Field that felt wholly right, and they've scored a real treat again in securing this Cold Radiance LP from Japanese artist IORI. Known for a potent brand of deep techno that has seen releases on Semantica, Prologue and DJ Nobu's Bitta label, Iori Asano is offered the chance to explore something different on this, his second album. Encourage to dabble in more explicitly ambient and experimental composition, Asano positively revels in this creative freedom for an eight-track album he himself likens to an "aerial sci-fi movie soundtrack." The gravelly sonic tones of opener "Transmission" sets the scene for what turns out to be one of the most enjoyable ambient techno albums of 2016 so far.

Monsoon (12" in hand-stamped sleeve)
Cat: PHONICAWHITE 013. Rel: 11 Nov 15
Deep House
  1. Monsoon (10:04)
  2. Rainfall (8:01)
Review: The latest installment of the occasional Phonica White series comes from a familiar favourite, Berlin-based Japanese producer Iori. This is his third contribution to the series, all told, and is every bit as impressive as its' predecessors. He begins with "Monsoon", an atmospheric and percussive affair that blends the big room bounce of tech-house with the quietly evocative chords and tear-jerking melodies of gentler deep house. It feels rather tribal, all told, though arguably in outlook rather than the way it sounds. Flipside "Rainfall" is similarly tech-tinged in design, but a whole lot dreamier and deeper. It's melodies, in particular, are luscious, lending the whole thing a blissful, eyes-closed vibe.
