Review: When the New York Times describes a musician as "one of the most essential artists of our time" you should probably stop what you're doing, quietly sit down, and listen. Or at least that's what you must do when it comes to Igor Levit. The Russian-German pianist - a leading contemporary purveyor of works by Bach, Beethoven, and Liszt - is nothing short of a tour de force, as is exemplified on this stunning, expansive triple album.

Firmly rooted in ideas of maximalism, here the great talent looks to push himself to the limit, along with our understanding of just how long a movement, or series of movements, can be played uninterrupted by the same person. Ronald Stevenson's 'Passacaglia' is a case in point - a set of unbroken variations spanning almost 90minutes. Meanwhile, Dmitri Shostakovich's logically titled '24 Preludes' is here turned into a 150minute epic.
