Review: Italian electro expert Heinrich Dressel returns after recent offerings for fellow Romans Mannequin, electronique.it and MinimalRome. This time for Zagreb based Barba, who've served up some great ones recently by the likes of Alex Cortex, Aubrey and Gosub. "The Styx Swamp" is classic electro vibes with a good injection of funk for added dancefloor dynamic. Label mate Perseus Traxx does a great job on the remix up next. On the flip, it's more of a classic, Larry Heard /Chicago deep house vibe on "Sailing The Nether Waterways" until that dark bassline comes rushing in, of course! Finally "Gray Slope" sounds very familiar.. even if it isn't. Maybe because it just channels that good ol' Drexciya and Dopplereffekt vibe so well: and that's a compliment.

Review: In which Mannequin become the latest label to dip into the vast CDr archives of Legowelt's dormant Strange Life Records. Originally released back in 2007, Mons Testaceum was the debut album from MinimalRome co-founder Heinrich Dressel and the onset of a trilogy dedicated to Monte Testaccio, an artificial mound in Rome composed almost entirely of 'testae', fragments of broken amphorae dating from the time of the Roman Empire. Notable for the prominent usage of Elka Synthex, a legendary Roman synthesizer, Mons Testaceum remains a wonderful curio of the Dressel discography and fans of the Italian's work will delight at the chance to own it on vinyl thanks to MNQ!

Review: On his second Bordello a Parigi outing, Minimal Rome boss Heinrich Dressel has opened up the doors to his "analogue forest" (that's not a euphemism, by the way) and has invited us to get "Lost in the Woodland". It's an invitation worth taking, because there's much to enjoy throughout. Rich in throbbing analogue synthesizers, pulsating cosmic grooves, John Carpenter style melodic themes, Nacho Patrol-esque Afro-chug and sparkling, deep space instrumental synth-pop, it's an album that gleefully sidesteps convention in pursuit of ear-catching electronic gold. It achieves that, of course, and then some. Hacking through electronic undergrowth has never been so much fun.

  1. Vessel In Distress - "Transponder"
  2. Franck Kartell - "Sigma Octantis"
  3. MSRG - "Elliptical Wave"
  4. Heinrich Dressel - "Down Upsight"
Review: The Electronic Leatherette label shows its hand straight away with a pointed nod to The Normal and the foundations of Mute Records. Sure enough there's an industrial, new wave and electro fog hanging over the nocturnal transmissions that make up this first release, although it's far from one dimensional throwback music. Vessel In Distress has a chilly sci-fi leaning to its brand of gloomy electro, but that's contrasted by the sprightly robo-funk of Franck Kartell's "Sigma Octantis". MSRG brings the party with the feisty stomp and gnarly synth lines of "Elliptical Wave", and Heinrich Dressel rolls out an evocative night crawler of a track in "Down Upsight", as is his customary style.
