Tentacles (12")
Cat: CURLE 054. Rel: 15 Feb 16
Techno
  1. Needles (5:54)
  2. Tentacles (6:16)
  3. Silkworm (6:31)
Review: One of those European DJs with a wealth of production experience, Germany's Franklin De Costa has been laying down 12"s that slip between house and techno since the turn of the century. When he's not collaborating with DJ Spider on Killekill, or moonlighting as Mudkid for Greta Cottage, De Costa holds court at the Mother's Finest night in Berlin which has seen the likes of Call Super, Derek Plaslaiko, Dynamo Dreesen and Fett Burger on selecting duties. Put simply, the man's a legend! Tentacles sees De Costa back on Curle for a third time, and really sums up his diversity as a producer; compare the hard as granite sound of "Needles" with the more fluid housey vibe of the title track. Finally, "Silkworm" sees De Costa lay down some gnarly, wall pounding techno.

Good Day Bad Day EP (140 gram vinyl 12" limited to 220 copies)
Cat: GV 006 . Rel: 05 Dec 16
Techno
  1. Derp Journal (6:03)
  2. Bogart Space (6:41)
  3. Good Day Bad Day (7:02)
  4. Flashmelo (7:07)
Review: Long time minimal techno pusher Franklin De Costa steps up to Jersey City label Green Village to thrown down a ruckus with four serious cuts of advanced house and techno. "Derp Journal" may be flippant in name, but the bassline it packs is not to be trifled with, nor the edgy drums and lashings of reverb. "Bogart Space" is a more house-minded affair, but it's still reaching to a contemplative space using unfamiliar sounds. "Good Day Bad Day" gets into a cyclical, psychedelic mood thanks to a trippy synth circling overhead, but then the EP gets dealt a tough finishing blow by the cranked up hustle of "Flashmelo", coming on like a crunchy mid 00s minimal jam of the highest order.

F Planet (12")
Cat: BH 042. Rel: 27 Nov 17
Techno
  1. F Planet (6:09)
  2. Astral Pilot (4:26)
  3. F Planet (Shifted remix) (5:18)
Review: Setting its sights on a group of artists who have already fully established themselves elsewhere, with DJ Spider being brought to the foray by TTT a few years back, and Shifted being part of the ultra-trendy Berlin landscape these days, London's Berceuse Heroique is clearly poising itself for the more mainstream ear - why not, is our opinion! Labels change, new faces arrive. The main surprise here comes from Spider's collaboration with Franklin De Costa, a German producer who himself has been part of the house/techno landscape that verges on the more techy, loopy side of the spectrum. The pair launch a pair of steely, mechanic techno tools with solid grooves at their core, not to mention some gruesome bass bubbling, too, and Shifted's remix is unsurprisingly effective, if a tad on the cold side - but, then again, that's just how the Berlin kids love it. Where to next for BH?
