  3. John Tejada & Adrian Leviste - "Fashion Avenue" (remix)
  4. Ewan Jansen - "New Stride" (Deez Follow Da Bass remix)
Review: "Classics" releases work best when the material being showcased is either obscure, hard to find or overlooked. Much of the material on this third trawl back through the vaults of Mike Grant's Moods & Grooves imprint ticks all these boxes. For example, Andres' "Just A Player" - a refreshingly loose and bumping fusion of warm disco samples, snappy beats and a killer bassline - has never previously appeared on wax. Then there's the soul-flecked, jazz-house/broken beat hybrid "Fashion Avenue (Remix)" by John Tejada and Leviste, which sounds remarkably fresh despite being 14 years old. As for Brad Peterson's strutting, acid bass-propelled "Trickchords", we're struggling to find any reference to it having been released before. Whether it has or not, it's as essential as the rest of this superb EP.

Review: The artistic rebirth of veteran Perth producer Ewan Jansen gathers pace. Following his return to action last year, Jansen has delivered fine EPs on Hardworksoftdrink, Going Good and Inner Balance. Here he pops up on Adelaide Soundworks with a bumper selection of deep, woozy, spacey and melodious house cuts. There's naturally much to admire, from the Motor City-influenced analogue richness of "Dispersion", to the sparkly, pitched-down bliss of "Redwood", and the ambient jazz informed closer, "Shines Of Chrome". Also impressive is "Been There Lone Cat", a jazz-funk/broken beat fusion track reminiscent of recent Dego and Kyle Hall cuts.

Review: Last year, Chez Damier launched a new imprint, Inner Balance, which debuted with a slightly overlooked EP of deep house from Jorge Caiado. For the label's second release, he's turned to veteran producer Ewan Jansen, who recently impressed with some killer archival material on Going Good. Opener "Harvest" is an undeniably floor-friendly affair, with snappy, drum machine handclaps, classic techno bass, swinging percussion hits, wild electronics and woozy chords combining to great effect. "Sines Of Life" is deeper and creepier, while "Square Dance" sits somewhere between bubbling electro, Damier style deep house, and far-sighted Motor City techno.

  6. Mantle Ships (11:06)
Review: Brian Not Brian's Going Good imprint has thus far proved particularly good at defying convention in favour of harder-to-pigeonhole thrills. Who better to turn to, then, that Ewan Jansen, a producer who has been delivering off-kilter house music on and off since 1997. Predictably, Lost Embers is an intriguing diverse and atmospheric set, variously touching on dreamy, Aphex Twin style ambience ("Ethernet" and "Analogue Vista"), loose-limbed techno positivity ("Weatherboard" and "Mantle Ships"), jazz-flecked downtempo brilliance (the fantastic "Tracking Olympus"), and Mood Hut/1080p style new age deep house eccentricity ("Dark Jazz Delay"). While pleasingly varied, it all feels typically warm and dusty, as you'd expect from a producer who still values analogue hardware.

Review: Perth prodicer Ewan Jansen has become something of a hot property since returning to action last year after a 14-year hiatus. This outing on his similarly re-born Red Ember imprint follows hot on the heels of killer EPs on Going Good, Inner Balance and Adelaide Soundworks. It finds Jansen in predictably fine form, serving up deep house cuts that bristle with toasty warmth and gentle positivity. Highlights are plentiful, too, from the seductive shimmer of toasty opener "Aqua Libre" and bustling, bleep-heavy shuffler "Plankton", to the Ron Trent-goes-to-South London hum of "Freckles". Pitched-down closer "Castel", a study in futurist atmospherics and '90s style electronica, is pretty darn tasty, too.

  1. Docking Lane (6:48)

  4. Perspex (6:36)
Review: Having recently resurfaced via his Red Ember label and a further run of essential releases on Going Good, Hardworksoftdrink and many more, Ewan Jansen is in fine fettle now as he shores up to Inner Shift with some high class house music for the heads. "Docking Lane" is as deep as they get, but that doesn't come at the cost of the beat which strides forth with purpose underneath the hum of the pads. "Bulkhead" gets a classic Latin drum machine vibe going, "Deceleration" takes things lighter and sparser, and then "Perspex" finishes the EP off with some warm, funky fare. Throughout the EP, Jansen's link to the formative years of deep house shine through - this is the sound of someone who knows what they're doing.

  3. Twinpole (6:19)
  4. Swanbourne (7:42)
Review: Since returning to action a couple of years back following a near two-decade hiatus, 1990s deep house survivor Ewan Jansen has barely put a foot wrong. With this in mind, it's perhaps unsurprising to find that this outing on IILE is packed full of evocative, melodious and floor-friendly gems. The Australia-based producer begins in confident mood via the darting synth bass, sun-kissed chords and melodious positivity of the wonderful "Reefing 101", before exploring slightly deeper pastures on the huggable warmth of Motor City influenced bumper "The Blackhawks". On the flip you'll find the Larry Heard style lusciousness of "Twinpole" and "Swarbourne", a jazzy and percussive workout smothered in deep space chord progressions. All killer and no filler: job done.

  5. Erewhon (6:58)
Review: When Butter Sessions approached Ewan Jansen about doing a release with them, the Perth-based '90s survivor was more than happy to open up his bulging archives. The resultant EP, Best Intentions, contains a pleasingly eclectic collection of tracks that were apparently recorded at various points between 2002 and 2016. Many will be attracted to the lucid, Balearic deep house breeziness of opener "Credo" and the slightly trippy, low-slung analogue house excursion "Harbinger", both of which reside on the A-side. There's plenty of intoxicating thrills to be found on the flipside, though, with impeccable ambient jazz number "On The Beach" and intelligent techno bubbler "Blueprint" standing out.

  8. Justin Zerbst - "Remember" (5:07)
Review: Since returning to action in 2015 after a 14-year break, Ewan Jansen has re-established himself as one of Australia's most talented deep house producers. Here, he gathers together tracks from some of the earliest releases on the Red Ember label he established with Justin Verbst way back in 1997. Combing analogue deep house flavours with elements of Detroit techno - most notably the far-sighted, stargazing ethos - much of the music on Embers Only has lasted the test of time brilliantly. Strangely, many of the 12" singles that the majority of these tracks are taken from were only ever pressed in stupidly limited quantities (between 20 and 40, in some cases), meaning that this collection is the only way of getting hold of them.

  4. Trinidadian Deep - "Move Me" (Mr YT remix)
Review: Chubby has already earned its stripes as a podcast and party in Australia dealing in connoisseurs' deep house, and their leap to the world of vinyl is no less classy. The first release splits a 12" between four esteemed practitioners of true skool beats for switched on heads, leading in with Antipodean maestro Ewan Jansen. After delivering the plush tones of his "Plants," Moods & Grooves label boss Mike Grant pops up to remix Jansen with stunning, understated results. Trinidadian Deep takes over on the B side with the typically shimmering melodics and dextrous drums he's much loved for. Mr YT then serves up a final remix, nudging "Move Me" just a little up the energy scale with the help of a killer organ line placed at the front of the mix.

Review: After two stunning rounds that featured the likes of Mark Hand, Lerosa and A Sagittariun, Bristol label Innate returns with another various EP of advanced techno ruminations from emergent talent and established names alike. Perseus Traxx leads in with a dense and expressive body popper that channels a little vintage B12, while Ewan Jansen takes things deep and aqueous with the gorgeous "Sinders". Rising electro star Reedale Rise serves up more of his sleek and refined machine funk on "Coral", and label boss Owain K unfurls a shimmering blanket of melancholic house with the sublime "Teifi".

  1. Justin Zerbst - "Clearance" (7:12)
  2. Ewan Jansen - "Red Silicone" (9:19)
Review: Perth, Western Australia is hardly known as a city synonymous with deep house yet in the late nineties locals Justin Zerbst and Ewan Jansen had a wonderful sound happening. It was no doubt influenced by local don Ben Stinga's weekly Undergound Solution radio show. It presented the underground deep house sounds of the time of Chicago as well the emerging sounds minimal from Cologne and Frankfurt. The results of their musical work was released on their indie imprint Red Ember, which in the last couple of years has finally received the recognition it deserves: just a decade and a half later, on these reissues. On the A side, Zerbst presents the quirky minimal funk of "Clearance". If you heard this one out today, you'd possibly mistake it for Seuil or Francesco del Garda and coincidentally: more of Zerbst's reissues have previously come courtesy of the former's Eklo imprint. On the flip, Jansen delivers a more powerful affair with the emotive, funky hi-tech soul of "Red Silicone" where this Detroit influenced groover features hynotising chords and tough rhythms.
