Review: If there's been one defining element of 2017 so far, it's been the stress that it's put a good proportion of the Western world under, and with this in mind it seems that there couldn't be a better time for a new Elbow album, and for the always mildly world-weary yet magnanimous and uplifting strains of Guy Garvey and co. to offer succour. Just as well then that it's perhaps their most richly crafted effort to date, offering warm optimism, a widescreen sweep of sound and their mainman's plangent croon in full effect, amidst an aural landscape that will do more than satisfy long terms fans of their elegiac art, rather something of a balm for these afflicted times.

Review: Eight albums in and Elbow still know how to keep us interested. This time round it's a record that seems caught in perpetual motion, refusing to stay still even for a minute off its proggyness, with this the LP most removed from their standard modus of hyper-emotive, string-capped anthemia. Not that the contents aren't huge and destined to fill main rooms and outdoor arenas. A refreshing break for a band that, while unarguably talented and accomplished craftsmen, may - in the eyes of some at least - have at times been guilty of opting for the safety of familiarity rather than braving the great unknowns of sound. If anything, then, "Giants Of All Sizes" is the final pour that cements their place in the pantheons of British music. Exquisite, innovative and highly original stuff.

Review: If there's a place in Manchester that really deserves to host the recording of a live album it must be The Ritz. The old theatre-cum-dance hall-cum-venue guarantees an atmosphere every time, but especially when the outfit on stage are among the biggest to come from the city. As such the odds are on for this artefact of a night out in northern England being worthy of your attention. With acoustic renditions dominating, the collection is remarkably intimate considering both the size of the venue and the stereotypically soaring and commanding sound of Elbow themselves. Tracks still seem to glide and fly overhead, only in a more personal way. Interludes are marked by Guy Garvey's famed ability to interact with attentive crowds, while the noise of that crowd invades choruses and verses alike, saying everything there is to say about bond between fans and players.
