Deep House
  1. Eddie Fowlkes - "1-2-3" (6:21)

  3. DJ 3000 - "Summer 1995" (6:13)
  4. Rico & Sonny - "The Beat" (6:44)
Review: Unlike its predecessors, which in turn showcased techno and electro jams, the third and final volume in EPM Music's 20th anniversary series of EPs looks to house music for inspiration. Of course, you'll find plenty of nods towards techno on show throughout, from the fuzz-soaked riffs and broken computer motifs of Eddie Fowlkes' hypnotic opener '1-2-3', to the fizzing, alien-sounding electronics and mind-mangling riffs of Rico & Sonny's rolling 'The Beat'. There's also an underwater-but-outer-space feel to Jon Dixon's pleasingly wonky 'Mack & Bewick', while DJ 3000's 'Summer 1995' is a gloriously retro-futurist slab of spacey house futurism full of warm analogue bass, sparkling chords and hands-in-the-air piano stabs.

Deep House
  1. 1-2-3 (6:22)
  2. Hold Me Down (6:24)
  3. Pandemic One (5:50)
  4. Test Unknown (6:24)
Review: Detroit legend Eddie 'Flashin' Fowlkes has had a truly massive month with a couple of releases on his esteemed Detroit Wax imprint (which he runs with Niko Marks) and this week he kickstarts his City Boy imprint back into action. This is its first release in 11 years, presenting part one of the Knucklehead Series featuring a fine selection of moods and grooves. First up is the deep down and dirty tech-funk of '1-2-3', followed by the dusty twilight mood music of 'Hold Me Down' and over on the flip is the double 12's most energetic cut in the form of 'Test Unknown' - a sincere expression in proper Motor city style 'hi-tech soul'.

Esoteric Life
Cat: DW 0016. Rel: 28 Jun 21
  1. Epsom (6:17)
  2. Mar, Mar (6:34)
Review: Motor City originator Eddie Fowlkes is back on his Detroit Wax imprint with an impressive two tracker titled Esoteric Life which celebrates his famed penchant for 'techno soul'. Indeed, the electrifying A side cut 'Epsom' is utterly emotive and totally hi-tech, like only an esteemed Detroit producer is capable of. Over on the flip, we have the positive and elevating energy of 'Mar, Mar' which will hypnotise you into submission with its rich tapestry of melodies. Look out for his equally terrific DJ Hoie EP, which also drops this week on the label.

DJ Hoie (12")
Cat: DW 0015. Rel: 28 Jun 21
Deep House
  1. DJ Hoie (6:26)
  2. Chant (6:28)
Review: Big one for Motor City legend Eddie 'Flashin" Fowlkes this week, with two concurrent releases on his esteemed Detroit Wax imprint. First was the hi-tech soul of Esoteric Life (tip!) and now the DJ Hoie EP. The title track featured on the A side is a smooth and slinky serving of deep house that makes perfect mood music for the late slot, complemented by its gliding acid lead beneath his vocal ponderings on the good life of touring - declaring that the love of his hometown is what brings him back. Over on the flip we have a stomping groove of "Chant", this one is sure to bang the party as well with its infectious rasta vocals throughout.

Techno Soul Vol 2 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DW 0014. Rel: 10 Dec 18
Deep House
  1. Route 88 (6:29)
  2. Pass The Butter (5:48)
Review: Eddie Fowlkes is back on his Detroit Wax label with more forthright jams that show off his distinctive approach to techno. As one of the originators of the sound, it's only logical he knows how to do this stuff properly. "Route 88" is a seductive, muscular piece with bold lead lines and a constant, driving rhythm section, while "Pass The Butter" takes a deeper route without losing the finely balanced and rich arrangement approach that his sound is built on. This is fully realised, classily executed Motor City machine soul from a man who helped define the culture.
