BNJMN - "Dive"
Delta Funktionen - "Petrol"
Herva - "Radio's Mutterings"
Bleak - "Keep Me Close"
John Beltran - "Return To Nightfall"
Review: Dutch label Delsin's 100th release celebrations continue, albeit in a typically understated fashion, on this fifth instalment. BNJMN's beautiful but brief opener "Dive" sets the scene for the release as does the dreamy but serene "Radio's Mutterings" by Herva. While the pace picks up on Delta Funktionen's "Petrol", a fusion of robust broken beats and dreamy chords, the overall tone here is mellow and melodic. This is audible on Bleak's "Keep Me Close", where dubbed out drums and a trancey bass prevail, and on the standout track from John Beltran. The US producer may be known primarily for his home-listening sounds, but on "Return to Nightfall" he copper-fastens his dreamy, melodic textures to a pulsing, hypnotic groove.

Review: Following a near two-year hiatus, Delta Funktionen resurfaces in order to invite us on his Junior High School Excursion To The Parallel World. While the title evokes images of bad 1980s teen movies, musically the Dutch producer has delivered a double-pack full of what we would describe as "proper" techno and electro. That means thrusting rhythms, bold and restless basslines, intergalactic electronics and melodies that sound like they've been beamed down from, well, a parallel world. There's naturally plenty of subtle variation - compare and contrast, for example, the booming rhythmic intensity and creepy melodies of "Torpedo" and the winding late night acid trip that is "Stingoperation" - but Delta Funktionen keeps his eyes firmly fixed on the dancefloor throughout.

Review: Niels Luinenburg's Delta Funktionen project has always been sharply focused on the sci-fi end of techno, with 2012 debut album Traces sounding like a long-lost, Drexciya-era Detroit classic. On this follow-up, he's gone further, with the accompanying press release suggesting that the album's title refers to a mythical planet inhabited by a race of mutant outcasts. The accompanying music - a mix of vintage Motor City techno and electro influences, with added Chicagoan acid lines, Kraftwerkian vocoder vocals and occasional nods to Italo and proto-house - certainly fits the concept. It makes for a hugely enjoyable listen, and should appeal to more than just sci-fi daydreamers and UFO conspiracy theorists.

Review: Dutch electro crossover genius Delta Funktionen releases the third chapter in his well-received Cave Of Descendants series and goes out all guns blazing! First up he gets straight down to business on "Phantom" with its driving and funky tech groove complete with vocoded "Get down" vocals it's pretty awesome. On the flip we have "Bunker" with its hard buzzing synth bass and full frontal clap attacks with long decays. Lovely! Final track "Mutant Society" is a more restrained and sombre affair, pretty deep too with its 303 workout and tripped out sci-fi atmosphere. Tip!

Reality Is Here
Review: Earlier this year Delta Funktionen announced he would be launching his own label, Radio Matrix, and the debut release has finally hit the shelves. On top of being a being a creative outlet for his own music, Niels Luinenburg revealed his new label already has forthcoming material on the way from Area Forty One and VC-118a. But for this release at hand, Delta Funktionen brings a turbo charged sound he's developed over the years on labels like Delsin, their techno-minded offshoot Ann Aimee, and Field Records, to a solid four-track EP of heavy, beat down electro. "RM", as you can imagine has a strong Detroit electro vibe, while "Droids" is a light-footed sequence of beats, smacking snares and plodding basslines. "Untitled Yet" has the cumbersome stomp of a malfunctioning garbage crusher, while "Reality Is Here" is the most techno sounding production on this debut which draws parallels to his remix of The Subliminal Kid back in '09.

Challenger
Review: Sun Storm sees Niels Luinenberg return to the precise, electro-influenced sound of last year's Traces album for Delsin, with a title track combining a clean acidic bassline with rougher atmospherics in the background. It's joined by album track "Challenger", a more sinister production with sprawling pads and spiky, high-pitched strings. Given Luinenberg's relatively clean sound it comes as some surprise that the raw techno-leaning, hardware based Karenn duo comprised of Blawan and Pariah have been approached to remix the similarly icy "Onkalo", which previously featured on Traces; however, the pair's the snare-heavy rework acts as in interesting contrast to Luinenberg's original, isolating some of the original's melodic elements and caking them in industrial grit.

On A Distant Journey
Review: Despite still being in his 20s, Niels Luinenberg has already released a string of acclaimed EPs and has showcased his impressive DJing skills through gigs around Europe and a series of excellent online mixes, as well as this year's Inertia compilation. Can he now take the next step and translate his skills to the album format? "Frozen Land" starts the album in contemplative mode as austere synths unravel over slow-paced, shuffling drums. It's followed by "Enter", where robotic vocals and seared acid lines underpin a slow-motion, ominous bass. Together, these tracks make for an atmospheric opening. Traces then shifts from the esoteric to the visceral, as "Redemption" rides heavy claps and rough acid lines; "Target" unfolds to cavernous drums and heavy tribal beats, while "And If You Know" features scatter-gun percussion and a "Losing Control"-style pitched down vocal sample. The parting shot, "On A Distant Journey" is perhaps the album's finest moment. It sees Luinenberg draw inspiration again from the classic techno and electro sounds that feature in his sets. Delta Funktionen may not have Forward Strategy Group's experimental edge or Shifted's unique sound design, but on Traces he proves himself to be one of the few to thrive in this most adverse setting for techno producers.

Another Dimension

Minds Into Meltdown
Data Economics
Review: The third in Delta Funktionen's Setup One series maintains the Dutch producer's ability to make deep, robust techno that simply works on the dancefloor. "Another Dimension" contains those idiosyncratic rasping hats and disturbing vocal cuts - and like all techno primed for the floor, the beat just feels that little bit more robust when it comes back in after the breakdown. "Miss Communication", up next, contains some thunderous drums rolling deep beneath radar bleeps before the unbeatably named "Minds Into Meltdown" maintains the sweaty momentum on the flip. The toughest of the lot though has to be "Data Economics", one of the most weird, paranoid, downright brilliant dancefloor tracks we've heard all year. Just don't do what we did and accidentally blast it through the office speakers at 45 RPM...

Conflict Data
Review: Delta Funktionen caused ripples of excitement in the techno underground with his Setup One: Decorum release a few months back, and here we see the Dutch producer return with his second Setup 12", entitled Fusion. It's tough, raw and unrelenting - everything you'd expect from Niels Luinenburg. "Devolution" kicks things off with some robust, industrial-strength bass, sounding similar to Karl O'Connor's "Haiku" track on Sandwell District a couple of years back under the Kalon pseudonym. "Evoltuion" maintains a more linear progression, a thumping, granite hard kick drum underscoring gurgling mechanics and tense snares interspersed by robotic bleeps. B Side opener "Theatre" offers plenty of thrills, with beatless interludes building swathes of tension before returning into a rock solid banging throb, while "Conflict Data" rounds off the 12" with an intergalactic exploration of machine funk, taking its cue from Jeff Mills' Something In The Sky series and bathing it in a shuffling sunrise groove.

Nebula
Estuary
Review: Two lots of high quality, dark, atmospheric techno deepness. 'Nebula' is the more straight-forward track, the thick pounding rhythm
and vibes make it end up somewhere between Mills and Maurizio: raw, straight techno. 'Estuary' gives some deeper dubby vibes.
Ann Aimee, the Delsin sub-label has been revived and is once again an outlet for the more experimental sides of Delsin's electronic
music. After the superb, fine release by James Kumo, another fine debut EP, This release is from Delta Funktionen, who goes, in real
life, by the name of Niels Luinenburg, a 23 year-old, living in the northern part of Holland. He's inspired by Maurizio, Basic Channel,
Convextion, Carl Craig, Steve Rachmad, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, and others. The superb artwork is done by another Delta, namely
Delta Inc. Supported by Francois K, Lawrence, Laurent Garnier amongst others.

Techno
Review: The latest release on Field pulls together four wildly diverse tracks and in the process proves that fresh thinking in techno need not revolve around Berghain-style repetition. Dutch producer Delta Funktionen though does demonstrate on "Work" that there is still some life left in the dub techno sound, presenting a tougher, jacking track with a visceral filter that tears its way through the arrangement. Rod's contribution is also an unusual proposition, rougher than his dense, loopy releases on Klockworks, as doubled up rhythms and metal-plated, gained drums vie for the listener's attention. Counteracting these intense peaks is Mark Du Mosch's "L'Argeant"; the groove is stripped back and bassy, but suddenly Du Mosch lets loose with a flamboyant Italo melody line, breathing colour into the greyscale surroundings. Roberto Auser throws one final curveball on "Fatal Attraction" - a beatless affair, its epic synths loom as ominously as a Resse bassline and will tingle as many spines as Derrick May's strings.

Review: The people who got to know Niels 'Delta Funktionen' Luinenberg through his ponderous Electromagnetic Radiation release or the adeptly programmed warm-up sets posted online may be surprised by the approach on Inertia. However, its direction could hardly be described as unexpected. The second volume of Electromagnetic Radiation and the grimy warehouse techno of Silhouette make perfectly clear that the Dutch DJ/producer likes to play it hard as well as deep. In that regard, Niels is not alone, and this mix, which consists solely of exclusive material, shows that a whole new wave of European techno producers is on the same wavelength. The mixture of the musical and forceful is audible from the outset, with textured chords unfolding over an angular rhythm on Sascha Rydell's "Rainy Days", a few tracks later as Cosmin TRG does his best mid to late 90s Ian Pooley techno impersonation over a rolling, warm bass and midway through on Peter Van Hoesen's "Last One at 1080", where evocative but eerie pads build to the backdrop of a prowling groove. It's a stunning finish to a mix that effortlessly balances the hard and the soulful.

Review: More sophisticated techno from Duplex, Delta Funktionen and Ohrwert. The fourth instalment of their Field series kicks off with the mammoth "Proprioception", a brooding slice of techno that takes up a whole 12" of wax. The groove of "AM Depth" by Duplex is submerged deep below a raw Chicago-style jack, while the spooky sonic landscape created by the on-fire Delta Funktionen on "Matrimony" rounds of a stellar release.

Delta Funktionen - "Motor"
Artefakt - "The Other Sun"
Metropolis - "Void"
Review: Positively brimming with otherwordly activity in the realm of techno, the latest Field brings together five hearty visions from artists that avidly embrace the experimental remit of the label. Roswell Return is an intermittent project that excels in ambient music of a less fluffy, more tense kind. R-A-G by comparison is decidedly direct, even if his reduced house comes laden with emotional baggage, and Delta Funktionen again notches the pace up with a peculiar kind of acid squelch over utterly straight-ahead drums. On the flip Artefakt gets into a perfect Artificial Intelligence reverie, while Metropolis bliss out on a bed of anchorless synths.
