  1. Claire (with Guy Gerber)
  2. Destroy She Says
  3. Renaissance
  4. Remove Control
  5. Through Your Mind (feat Spaceman)
  6. U (Unfinished)
Review: Sometime Guy Gerber cohort Clarian (also to be found in deep house duo Footprintz) makes a first release proper with this expansive EP on Visionquest, embracing a rich spread of styles but all driven by a love of warm, harmonious melodics. "Claire" is a link-up with Gerber, resulting in a sun kissed deep house cut full of plaintive piano and soothing synths, while "Destroy She Says" finds a curious position in between ambient techno and Detroit electro. "Renaissance" is a more mournful kind of deep house, working on minor chords and reaching for a full-on vocal turn, signalling a progression in the EP further towards vocal pop tracks. "Remove Control" has a touch of Italo about it, mixed with romantic strings and more perfectly processed singing, while there's a measured acid throb to "Through Your Mind". Rounding the EP off on a moody progressive tip, "U (Unfinished)" presents perhaps the clubbiest of all the tracks on this six track bumper addition to the Visionquest stable.

Road To Recovery EP (white & clear split colour vinyl 12")
Cat: TURBO 162. Rel: 07 Aug 14
Deep House
  1. Road To Recovery
  2. Who Are They To Judge Us
  3. Road To Recovery (Sei A remix)
  4. Who Are They To Judge Us (Iron Galaxy remix)
Review: Former Footprintz character Clarian is going it alone these days, and after turns on Visionquest and Play It Say It his dense, romantic sound finds a new home on Turbo. "Road To Recovery" may strut forth on a pronounced 4/4 groove but its more defined by the expressive synth lines and fluttering found sounds that linger around it. "Who Are They To Judge Us" takes a more skippy stance in the rhythmic department, although the overall tone is similarly moody and aimed at the headphones. On the remix front, Sei A takes the first track and twists it up tightly into a shuffling minimal house cut, while Iron Galaxy takes the latter track and plunges it into an icy, wilfully airy deep house affair.

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Ma Shiva
  2. Dystopia
  3. Ma Shiva (Invisible Conga People remix)
  4. Open Your Eyes
Review: Clarian has largely impressed since making his debut on Visionquest last year. Following solid outings on Culprit and Turbo, he pops up on hyped Canadian imprint Multi Culti. There's a distinctly global feel to proceedings throughout, with Clarian melding Indian and South American influences with woozy, Visionquest-ish deep house grooves. The slowly unfurling deep house exotica of "Dystopia" is probably our pick, though the deep synth-pop style eyes-wide-shut haziness of "Ma Shiva" also impresses. The EP's best moment actually comes from Invisible Conga People, whose trippy, late night reinterpretation of "Ma Shiva" - all heavy, analogue-sounding bass, delay-laden rhythmic shuffle and tactile late night electronics - is simply superb.

Ankh EP (12")
Cat: KOMPAKT 356. Rel: 25 Jan 17
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Ankh (5:45)
  2. Old Miami (6:05)
  3. Alienated (6:04)
Review: 356 releases and 20-odd years deep, Kompakt is still delivering the goods. This 12" marks the return of label-hopping producer Clarian North, whose last appearance on the Cologne label came back in 2015. As usual, the tracks on offer are tactile, fluid and melodious, sitting somewhere between deep house, tech-house and more Balearic fare. We're particularly enjoying the bubbly electronic melodies, spacey chords and hustling drums of "Old Miami", and the hushed spoken word vocals, sweeping synth strings and blissful lead lines of "Ankh". That said, the darker wonkier and more bass-heavy B-side workout, "Alienated", is also rather impressive.

  1. Time Safari (6:00)
  2. Ancient Cave (6:05)
  3. Early Life (5:56)
Review: Formerly one half of acclaimed duo Footprintz, Clarian North has really come into his own since flying solo, with some terrific releases over the last few years on Turbo, Balance Music and of course Kompakt - Time Safari being his third release for the Cologne based institution in only a mere couple of years. The EP was said to be a two year long process, from recordings made in South Africa with collaborators Richard Marshall and Blane Venter along with many locals along the way. From the futuristic, electro-influenced groove of the title track, the hypnotic and enchanting tech house of "Ancient Cave" awashed in shimmering delightful melodies to epic closer "Early Life", it's a sublime journey from start to finish.

  1. Space Noir (5:46)
  2. Mission To Bars (6:04)
  3. Ver (11 AM mix) (5:57)
Review: Formerly one half of Footprintz, Seth Troxler's A&R guy at Soft Touch and all round transcendental house music producer, Clarian, delivers a fine release here for the Cologne institution. There's a killer bassline on "Space Noir" backed by dreamy and mysterious atmospherics and soaring, epic melodies. "Mission To Bars" is a bit more fierce, using some sick 303 acid with fierce rhythm programming on this serious peak time thriller; but just wait until those sinister sci-fi vocals come in! Finally, "Ver (11AM Mix)" perfectly nails that Kompakt vibe on this dreamy, melancholic and downright ethereal cruiser that elevate you and your dancefloor to pure, euphoric bliss

Review: Since debuting on Visionquest back in 2013, Clarian North has served up music on a wide variety of labels - Multi-Culti, Turbo and Kompakt included - all the while mixing vintage new wave influences with more contemporary dancefloor styles. For this long-awaited debut album, he's decided to flip the script a little, serving up a set of drowsy, stylish and left-of-centre cuts that mostly his explore his love of skewed synth-pop and Mascara-clad 1980s new wave. Of course, there are plenty of subtle nods towards other sounds and styles - a dash of spacey ambient here, a tear-jerking shoegaze pop gem there - amongst the DIY post-punk pop workouts, as well as a handful of tracks that move closer to his more familiar dancefloor sound.
