The Antlers Of God (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: LIH 023. Rel: 26 Jun 17
Funky/Club House
  1. On Rhythm
  2. Dancing Dream
  3. Banku
Review: It's all going on for Cervo at the moment. Having just launched the Banana Hill label with an excellent record from Majid Bekkas (that he also did an edit for), the UK-based producer has now been snapped up by Marcel Vogel's Lumberjacks In Hell label to drop more of his worldly edit science. "On Rhythm" leads the charge with confidence on the A-side, using a bubbling, Afro-infused disco-funk source and making it lean and mean for the floor. There's a distinctly Nigerian lilt to the guitars that cluck away through "Dancing Dream", but it's accompanied by bright chiming chords and a solid beat that will stand up to any contemporary house jam. "Banku" is even more explicitly modern, although still layered up with gorgeous vocals and percussion from Africa.

Deyo (12")
Cat: ACRE 071. Rel: 24 Oct 17
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Deyo (7:15)
  2. Kasoa (6:18)
Review: Founder and leader of the Banana Hill parties out of Sheffield, Cervo has started churning out some seriously bad-mannered house music as of late. Interestingly, his devious blends of 4/4 dance recall the same sort of experimentation and freedom as Toddla T's tracks, the main star to have come out of Steel City. The man debuts on London's Black Acre with these two spicy rave bangers, kicking off with the smooth and liquid-like "Deyo", before turning everything into a bumpy stomp on the more acid-laden "Kasoa". The main thing about these two tunes is the funk running deep in its veins - boom!

Ad Hoc Presents: Volume 3 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AHR 004. Rel: 16 Jul 18
Deep House
  1. Cervo - "Hesse Groove"
  2. Taurtollo - "Om's Mehndi"
  3. Chambers - "The Gentleman"
  4. Yadava - "Kadampa 125"
Review: The fourth release on Manchester-focused label Ad Hoc brings together a range of outernational grooves from some fast-rising talents. Cervo is aligned with the Banana Hill parties, and also previously released on Black Acre and Lumberjacks In Hell. His "Hesse Groove" takes a mellow, spaced out approach to dusty machine-powered house, while Taurtollo gets into a bongo-heavy jam for the eclectic warm up session. Chambers' "The Gentleman" is a loose and smooth jazzy number that revolves around a few key samples to create its seductive vibe, and then Yadava finishes the EP off with the free-roaming double bass exploration of "Kadampa 125."
