Review: When it comes to crafting out-of-this-world fare out of analogue electronics and vintage hardware, there are few quite as talented as Italian composer Caterina Barbieri. She's at it again on "Ecstatic Computation", an album derived from "the creative use of complex sequencing techniques and pattern-based operations". Regardless of the techniques used or Barbieri's high-minded concepts, the resultant music is never less than stunning. Riley and Reich style minimalist melodic patterns - delivered via bold, colourful analogue synths capable of creating an ecstatic mood amongst listeners - catch the ear throughout, while intriguing diversions such as "Arrows Of Time" - a mesmerizing piece for Harpsichord and voice - only emphasise the quality and depth of Barbieri's work. In a word: breathtaking.

  1. Human Developers (12:43)
  2. Rendering Intuitions (6:34)
  3. How To Decode An Illusion (8:26)
  4. We Access Only A Fraction (9:00)
Review: Italian composer turned analogue electronics wizard Caterina Barbieri has always been able to create mesmerizing, otherworldly music with only a small array of instruments. Born Again In The Voltage, her latest full-length excursion, was recorded between 2014 and 2015 using a Buchla 200 synthesizer, a cello and her own voice. Naturally, the results are astonishing. Check, for example, 12-minute album opener, "Human Developers", where discordant, mournful and post apocalyptic cello motifs are slowly enveloped by trademark Buchla synth sounds. In contrast, the beautiful "Rendering Intuitions" puts subtly shifting cello parts at the centre of a heady ambient soup, while triumphant closer "We Access Only A Fraction" sounds like restless, metronomic proto-techno smothered in trippy vocalizations.

Split (limited LP) (1 per customer)
Cat: IMPREC 461. Rel: 15 Aug 18
Experimental/Electronic
  1. Caterina Barbieri - "Bestie Infinite" (15:10)
  2. Eleh - "Wear Patterns" (16:19)
Review: Important Records recently described this release as featuring "two sound poems". There's certainly something poetic about the fluid ebb and flow on both pieces, both of which were crafted with the use of analogue and modular synthesizers and tend towards the epic. On the A-side you'll find a new piece by Italian sound designer and composer Caterina Barbieri. "Bestie Infinite" somehow manages to be both mournful and strangely positive, with fluctuating modal melodies slowly emerging from the backbreaking weight of Barbieri's droning chords. Minimal analogue synthesis specialist ELEH handles side B, casting a spell via held church organ chords, off-key melodies and cascading electronics on stunning, 16-minute opus "Wear Patterns".

  1. Mumdance & Logos - "Teachers" (5:43)
  2. Caterina Barbieri - "Molecular Illusion" (4:21)
  3. Peder Mannerfelt - "Over My Face" (3:57)
  4. Nkisi - "Kinenga" (3:41)
  5. Space Afrika - "After They Entered It Was Only Evident" (3:59)
Review: "Shared Meanings" has been one of Mumdance's most ambitious and explorative projects to date; pulling together the four corners of the hardcore continuum and tying them in a tight bow, his mix has drawn elements and parallels between all genres and laced them in a narrative that mirrors and reflects throughout. Now, for limited time only, we have five of the 32 tracks he included in the mix ranging from his and Logos' totem track "Teachers" which pays homage to the UK's forefathers, to the pulverising thumpy bumpy techno of Nkisi's "Kinenga" via stasis sensation ambience from Space Afrika in the form of "After They Entered It Was Only Evident". Coordinates don't come much broader or deeper, "Shared Meanings" is Mumdance in full on explorer mode. Long may his meaningful trips continue.

  5. Innocecocchito (5:49)
  6. Curve Sciolte (6:36)
Review: It's time for a new slice of Punctum style, this time residing on Germany's more explorative Summe imprint. Home to the new world order of experimental techno and IDM, the label is a perfect home to Punctum's wayward tactics in the studio, and these six mechanical pieces of electronica take the term ambient into new and more exciting zones. "Glory Bitch" kicks off with a kinetic flutter of beatless synth sounds, which gain even more movement and flow with "Uncharted" and "Quick Botta". "Tensione Fresca" goes for the moodier approach, which paves the way for the introspective, dub-driven sounds of "Innocecocchitto" and "Curve Sciolte". A blinding excursion into the ether...
