Sundials EP
Cat: B2R 011. Rel: 12 Jan 24

Deep House
Sundials (feat Nathan Haines) (6:29)
Second Nature (5:59)
Gotta Let It Go (5:49)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Lisbon-based Frenchman Brawther, who is also one-half of Dungeon Meat for more raw grooves, shows off his mastery of deep house on this fresh new EP for B2 Recordings. 'Sundials' (feat Nathan Haines) immediately soothes the soul with its lunging chords and seductive sax lines. Occasional female coos add further lushness to this most heartwarming of tunes. 'Second Nature' has a little more height and drive to it but again the drums are warm and fuzzy, the chords smeared in artful ways and the overall vibe utterly heady. Last of all is the bubbly and dubby 'Gotta Let It Go' with its bottomless depths and chords that melt off into an infinite horizon. Gorgeous stuff from this always quality artist.

The Best Of Brawther Vol 1
Cat: BTL 016. Rel: 29 Sep 22

Deep House
Don't Go
Negentropy
VXVXVX
Review: Leeds-baesd, French born Brawther is one of those artists responsible for bringing back a deep house sound around a decade ago. His love of the US classics informed his own sets and productions which have got better with time. There haven't been many, but each one is expertly well crafted and timeless. Now he dips into his archives to offer up some of what he thinks - and we agree - are his best cuts. 'Don't Go' is a raw and heavy one with hefty bounce and intent while 'Negentropy' is more smooth, balmy, horizonless in its loopy hypnosis. 'VXVXVX' is chord-led, vocal tinged jam to close.

Flow (3:19)
Another Dub (7:07)
Theme From The Dungeon (4:50)
I Can't Explain (feat Javonntte) (6:16)
Jaxx Freaxx (7:46)
Brudan In Leeds (7:34)
Hazy Groove (8:00)
Pickney (5:20)
Review: Brawther makes his long playing debut on his new label Negentropy, and the long serving French house producer has never sounded freer in his vision of electronic music. "Flow" is a gorgeous ambient opener to the album, setting the scene for the immersive, mellow house tones of "Another Dub." "Theme From The Dungeon" switches stance again for a hip hop tempo, while Javonnte comes on board to deliver a soulful vocal over the broken beat lilt of "I Can't Explain." "Jaxx Freaxx" brings things back to a dancefloor focus, which "Brudan In Leeds" builds upon with an easy deep house tone that should satisfy Brawther's long time fans. "Hazy Groove" is a laid back minimal house roller, and then "Pickney" closes the album out with an even more stripped back workout for the later hours of the party.

Soothing
Soothing (12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: CAB 48. Rel: 13 Mar 17

Deep House
Soothing (7:48)
Visions (9:23)
Review: Highly respected Frenchman Alexandre Gouyette makes his debut on Berlin institution Cabinet Records with two perfectly contrasting grooves: "Soothing" naturally lives up to its name with soft focus dubby synth ripples and a classic drum arrangement while "Visions" rolls and punches like a Kenny Dope beats track. Broken, spacious, dubbed-out and physical, Brawther's reputation for rough finesse is so strong you can properly feel it.

Gsm's Life (MLIU dub)
Spaceman Funk (OG mix)

Not Another Shouts
Review: Once again if you're after hardcore deep house, look no further then the quintessentially French productions of Brawther. Archetypal 909 beats and zappy chords in "Gsm's Life" are given the filter treatment of a MLIU dub, while the OG mix of "Spaceman Funk" is silky smooth and vocally sassy. "Le Voyage" is as spacey as it is rhythmic - think something along the lines of a souped-up "Magic Fly" by Space, while "Not Another Shouts" is the EPs deepest track; a production no too dissimilar to a housier take of Silent Servant's material on Historia Y Violencia.

Not Another Shouts
Review: Making a welcome return to the Prescription spin-off Balance, Brawther is in fine fettle with his expressive, bumping deep house concoctions. "GSMs Life" kicks off in earnest with a pronounced swing and stabbing chords in a vintage New Jersey style, while "Spaceman Funk" takes a lighter approach with wistful arpeggios and swirling pads over a more submerged beat. "Le Voyage" gets trackier with its dubby wash and forthright rhythm section ploughing straight into the heart of the mix, leaving it to "Not Another Shouts" to slow things right down with the hazy early morning light of mellow Rhodes and whistling kettle signalling the end of the party.

Symbiosis (double 12")
Cat: SUSH 60. Rel: 06 Feb 23

Deep House
Symbiosis 1 (8:48)
Symbiosis 2 (6:39)
Symbiosis 3 (2:50)
Symbiosis 4 (8:04)
Symbiosis 5 (7:20)
Symbiosis 6 (7:52)
Review: After having two of his earlier tunes remodelled by Carl Craig and Mike Huckaby thanks to Sushitech, Detroit's Delano Smith re-emerges on the label with a double pack of tunes made with Brawther under the D&B Productions. That moniker has more to do with the pair's name rather than a suddenly conversion to drum & bass, although there's a love of dubby effects and deep bass power here that - at a stretch - could be said to be in common. The six tracks - Symbiosis' 1-6 - are smooth and simple, but executed with an ear (or four) for an irresistible groove, an economic but rhythmic keyboard stab and a knack for squeezing something nicely soulful from the barest ingredients. Nice work indeed.

Yossi Amoyal Presents Fluere I
Cat: SUSH 51. Rel: 14 Dec 20

Minimal/Tech House
GES - "Helmut Schmidt Plays Bach" (dub)
Mathew Jonson - "Freedom Engine"
Brawther - "Serpent"
Benjamin Brunn - "A Rivulet In Paradise"
GES - "Helmut Schmidt Plays Darius Milhaud"
Review: Sushitech's anniversary celebrations are centring around label boss Yossi Amoyal's impeccably curated compilation Fluere. Across a series of 12"s, Amoyal taps up big hitters and deep cover reaches alike to present something of a summation of the inspiration behind his fantastic label's sound. On here you get Jan Jelinek's experimental excursions as GES, Mathew Jonson's evergreen 'Freedom Engine', dynamic tech house from Brawther and shimmering beatless pulses from Benjamin Brunn. It's a unique approach that juxtaposes club tracks and experimental fare in an interesting way, and the quality remains infallibly high throughout.

Chez Damier Presents Purpose By Design
Cat: BMUK 002. Rel: 11 Feb 13

Deep House
Miruga - "Midnight Theme"
Brawther - "Endless" (UG mix)
Introspective - "The Way I feel When I Think Of You"
GMS - "Tell Me What It Is" (Matthew Bandy mix)
Review: The legendary Chez Damier presents the first of two carefully curated 12"s under the Purpose For Design banner on his own Balance Music, carrying on the Chicago label's mission to deliver the finest contemporary deep house sounds. On the A-side, Ethereal Sound alumnus Miruga delivers "Midnight Theme", a jazz-tinged number filled with swimming keys floating atop a thick undercurrent of bass, while UG provides their mix of Brawther's "Endless", a garage-inspired track filled with feather light vocal snippets, creamy chords and a snappy, upbeat rhythmic flex. On the B-side, "The Way I Feel When I Think Of You" sees Introspective combine an insistent yet smooth synth pulse with reverb heavy piano chords resulting in an improvised, rustling percussive feel. Matthew Bandy's mix of GMS' "Tell Me What It Is" ends on an unexpectedly tropical note with high impact conga rhythms, sun drenched piano, rolling calypso-inspired bassline and bold vocal.

Horizons Part II
Cat: BERGAMON 152. Rel: 13 Apr 22

Minimal/Tech House
Per Hammar - "Radiator" (7:46)
Ada Kaleh & Jay Bliss - "Nimbus" (6:35)
Brawther & Traumer - "Melted" (feat Prince Morella) (6:30)
Altitude - "At The End Of Isolation" (7:13)
Review: The Berg Audio label grows ever more vital with a second edition of their Horizon series. Like the first it is high class tech and dub for those who like to get lost at 5 am in cosy back room spaces.
Per Hammar opens things up with a fulsome dub techno roller with hi hats peeling off the flabby groove. Ada Kaleh & Jay Bliss lift their heads a little more with some dreamy but dynamic deep house and Brawther & Traumer combo for the brilliantly silky and stylish dub house cut that is 'Melted' (feat Prince Morella). Altitude closes down with the impossibly smooth and frictionless 'At The End Of Isolation.' Great stuff.

Deeper States Vol 1
Deeper States Vol 1 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ITWD 01. Rel: 14 Feb 22

Deep House
Sandile - "That's My Jam" (6:44)
Tom Jay - "Transmissions" (6:29)
South Shore Garage - "Tell The Truth" (6:32)
Brawther - "Dunes" (6:23)
Review: The Interweaved label makes its first strike with Deeper States Vol 1, a Various Artists collection which sets a promising tone for the label. Cologne's Sandile leads the way with 'That's My Jam', a skipping slice of deep house shaped out with hazy pads and nagging vocal slithers. Tom Jay brings a bouncier garage demeanour to 'Transmissions' and South Shore Garage gets even more stripped and nasty with that swing, capturing a rough n' ready MPC-style vibe which is hard to resist. Brawther then completes the set with 'Dunes', a more snaking, stripped down affair with dubby undercurrents and bass for days.
