Aufgang B - "Demo 2" (6:43)
Benedikt Frey - "Drop The Funk" (4:23)
Review: A third release on the Serious Trouble label sees Benedikt Frey return to the fold and share sides with Aufgang B, a new project from Berlin-based producers Alexander Arpeggio (spAceLex) and Cid Hohner. It's the latter who take the lead, laying down a rugged midtempo cut of faltering machine funk which wouldn't sound out of place in a set from Lena Willikens. With a full debut pencilled in on Vienna label NeuBau, expect to hear more from Aufgang B over the coming months. Previous contributions to Serious Trouble from Frey have shown the German has a clear sense of humour and that's evident on "Drop The Funk" which comes across as a weed addled homage to Zapp.

Mark Forshaw - "Trouble With My Sines"
The Acid Mercenaries - "In The Smoke"
Drvg Cvltvre - "Hierarchy Of Heritage"
Benedikt Frey - "Gdn" (acid cut)
Review: The in your face bassline of Mark Forshaw's "Trouble With My Sines" gets this third release by the Lopasura label off to a burly, teeth-gritting start. It's like the Emptyset having a disgruntled go at deep house. Panzerkreuz Records' The Acid Mercenaries provide the first of two acid tracks on this various artist EP, and their a woozy, lo-fi "In The Smoke" is dark and long burning, while Benedikt Frey, who provided the label's previous release, delivers a clubby 303 workout with drums and percussion like John Heckle. It's the kicks, the booming, cabbalistic kicks of Drvg Cvltvre's "Hierarchy Of Heritage" though, that really make this EP a delightfully monolithic DJ's weapon.

Fred P - "It's All In The Mind" (6:39)
Pjotr - "Waves From The Past" (8:30)
Vakula - "Uliyanochka" (6:26)
Benedikt Frey - "Untitled 3" (6:10)
Review: ** Repress of the Ethereal Sound classic! **It's time for another dose of mystical deep house vibes on the renowned Ethereal Sound. Their mini compilations are always eagerly awaited here at Juno HQ, and this time they showcase the talent of NY house wizard Fred P and Ukraine's main man, Vakula. Fred P's tracks are always a pleasure to listen to and "It's All In The Mind" reaffirms his talents as one of deep house's finest. The beat opens with an unusually punchy acid sound for Mr.P but soon dissolves and melts into something much more sparse and disconnected. New man Pjotr takes the helms on "Waves From The Past" and opens with a stunning chord shadowing a distant sample of a jazz gig which weaves and moulds its way through to the end. On the flip, Vakula drops an intricate percussion filled with bongos and subtle basslines like only he knows how to do best, while Benedikt Frey ties thing up in true Ethereal style on "Untitled 3", creating a stylish atmosphere and serves as a welcome addition to their already impressive artist catalogue.

She's Lost Control (Lucas Croon dub) (5:17)
She's Lost Control (dub) (5:13)
Review: Emotional Response's tenth-anniversary celebration are brought to a superb close with Benedikt Frey. He serves up a magnificently dubbed out and psychedelic cover version of Joy Division's 'She's Lost Control' across four different versions. The vocal version might be the best for us - it retinas that compelling dark drum funk you expect from the band with eerie synth additions and hefty bass. The instrumental is more slow and dubbed out in a traditional sense with the Lucas Croon dub doused in endless reverb. Last of all is a dub by Frey himself that is full of open space and bass bin distorting headiness.

Wonky System (5:01)
Troll (6:11)
40hz (feat O-Wells) (6:51)
Review: Benedikt Frey's Recall marks a first solo outing on the Malka Tuti label. This one follows a pair of remixes and contribution to a recent label compilation and shows of his mix of breakbeat and techno across four cuts. 'Recall' rises and falls with oversized hi hats and mangled vocals that make for quite the drama. 'Wonky System' is stark metal, jittery drums and groaning voices all mangled into a dense and tense groove and 'Troll' then brings some old school trance influences. '40hz' (feat O-Wells) is another noisy and caustic techno sound that summons you to the dance floor.

Review: Benedikt Frey hails from Darmstadt and operates on the fringes of the techno world. Here on R,i O with his 1987 EP he explores slow motion worlds and deep space synth details on opener 'Phrack'. 'Trencher' is another seriously unhurried tune with cosmic dub drums and hypnotic synth lines drawn out in all directions. 'ORI' brings some filtered vocal smears to more ritualistic dub rhythms that are empty and inviting. 'Attitude' gets more freaky and unsettling with its off-grid patterns, clashing drums and weird vocal apparitions. 'Dummy' and 'Steam' both continue this melon-twisting meltdown with slow-motion techno-magic.

Private Crimes (DALO remix) (7:27)
Review: Darmstadt's Benedikt Frey delivered a terrific fine player last year on Los Angeles' imprint ESP Institute, that proved there was some stylish diversity within his sonic repertoire. Since then, he's also impressed as remixer, like on his great rendition of Carl Craig's classic "Domnia" but now it's time to have his own tracks reworked. There's some fine talent onboard here for Artificial: Remixed: Versatile main man I:Cube steps up first to recreate "H For Hysteria" merging a diverse array of influences within his charming and hypnotic perspective of the track. Dusseldorf's enfant terrible Toulouse Low Trax delivers some fine minimalist rhythmicity as always on his oddball version of the track. The B side belongs to two versions of "Private Crimes" by lesser known artists - our pick was Frey's close collaborator DALO and her hard hitting and tunnelling techno rendition.

Out Of The Fog (6:52)
Wolves (5:34)
Lights (7:10)
Review: The mysterious Lopasura imprint claims to be from Fergus Falls, Minnesota; we'll take their word for it for the time being. They're back with another release by Frankfurt hero Benedikt Frey who serves up the Out Of The Fog EP. Following up the rusty hardware house jams of the Ghosts EP for Creme Organisation and the cosmic/industrial textures of The Lobbyist for ESP Institute. This EP features some pretty functional and restrained techno, like on the mental title track! "Wolves" is equally hypnotic and cyclical with its grinding arpeggiations drawing you down into the void. On the flip "Lights" is definitely the most uplifting track with its rich layers of lush pads and glistening melodics made for some proper transcendental therapy on the dancefloor.

The Lobbyist (6:37)
Cupids Delight (feat TCB) (4:49)
Gravel (6:15)
Review: Woof! Lovefingers clearly has more music pencilled in for release on ESP Institute than he knows what to do with it! The latest 12" of a supremely busy 2016 sees the LA label seek out the refined house music sculpting talents of Frankfurt's Benedikt Frey, a producer who has been quite active himself over the past 12 months or so. Some three tracks deep, The Lobbyist offers a nice overview of Frey's talents as a producer with the title track a foray into stomping, unpredictable techno tension replete with some strange vocals reminiscent of Phil Daniels' turn in Blur track "Parklife". Fellow Frankfurtite TCB colludes on the heat-treated, murky house cut "Cupids Delight" whilst closer "Gravel" is a loose percussive number that eases down the intensity levels to 'factor: breeze'.

Ghosts (6:13)
Scale (5:50)
Review: With five releases in the past year, it's fair to say that Frey's star is in the ascent. Ghosts, for TLR's label, showcases his deep, hypnotic sound, and puts him in a similar place as artists like Xosar. This is especially true on "Can't Joke With Dxy" and "Faith", whose warm, tranced out synths and fluid bass sound like they were fashioned after a dreary winter's day on a West Coast beach. The title track is more abstract and freeform, with Frey using a loose rhythm to underpin his swirling synths. Lastly, there's "Scales". With its understated vocals and languid guitar, it could be the soundtrack to an afternoon spent downing cheap beers in one of the Hague's dive bars.

Telamon (5:36)
Stereobate (6:18)
Review: MRT is a new label from the Swiss label Lux Rec, and judging by this debut release from Mule and Live at Robert Johnson artist Benedikt Frey, it is dedicated to abstract, mid-tempo experiments. The title track sets the pace, with rough tones and dark abrasive acid licks set to a pulsing, stop-start rhythm. "Telamon" follows in a similar vein; coated in 303s, it winds its way through atmospheric diversions and builds gradually over a dense, stepping rhythm. Finally, there's "Stereobate", which offers a surprise; instead of abstract rhythms, Frey lays down a jack-hammer rhythm that is as intense as trip to a dentist who has run out of anesthetic.

SH Birds (4:36)

Mind The Gap (5:54)
Good Night Houston (6:09)
Review: Benedikt Frey's return to Live At Robert Johnson with Reframe arrives amidst a hive of activity for the local talent. He recently debuted on Hivern Discs with Nadia D'Alo as INIT, with a full album promised later this year, whilst he's also penciled in to appear on Lux Rec offshoot MRT. Having debut on LARJ some three years ago with Running in Circles, this four track 12" shows how pleasingly varied his productions have now become.Contrast, for example, the rolling, old skool breakbeats, watery melodies and vocoder vocals of "SH Birds", with the throbbing, EBM-influenced chug of "Mind The Gap". Or, for that matter, the creeping, ghostly late night beauty of "Signals", with the spacious, ultra-deep pulse of closer "Good Night Houston". While there's a constant thread running throughout - a sort of resigned weariness - Frey's ability to change style and rhythmic pattern is the EP's most impressive feature.

Ariadnes Thread
Review: Slowly emergent artist Benedikt Frey has scored releases for labels such as Live At Robert Johnson and Mule Electronic, so that should give you a feel for the kind of grade his deep house productions operate at. Making his second appearance on his own Love Pain Sunshine & Rain imprint, he fuses ranging techno textures with a measured rhythm section, not least on the Morphosis-tinted "Seven Corridors" with its thrilling vistas of melodic grind. "Geranos" is a more aqueous affair, letting vast watercolours of pad bleed into each other while the beat drives things forward. "Adriadnes Thread" is the most laid back of the bunch, letting swathes of synth intone a soothing lullaby of Sunday-minded sonic matter.

Delinquencies
Review: Formerly operating under the Suedmilch and Venedikt Reyf aliases with releases grounded in dub techno that stretch back to 2009, Pforzheim-based producer Benedikt Frey has more recently chosen to adopt an stylistic approach closer to traditional house, appearing on Anton Zap's Ethereal Sounds, Mule Musiq and the esteemed Live At Robert Johnson late last year. Speechless sees the first release for his own imprint, Love Pain Sunshine and Rain, and if future releases are this good it should be a label to watch; the title track combines loose, organic drums with a growling bass and distant diva vocal, smoothly transitioning into a jacking 303 line contrasted by abstract, ethereal chords. It's joined by "The Same Old Game", a dubbier late night jam accented with billowing pads, and "Delinquencies", a trance-inducing number comprised of thick bass, reverb-laden chords, all cut through with sharp hi-hats and bubbling acid lines. All told, this is excellent stuff - fans of innovative deep house in the heady Vakula vein need to check this.

Review: Benedikt Frey heads this latest offering from the Batti Batti label, teaming up with jonas.san for "Girl From Venus", which pair the former's signature raw drums with the latter's outtakes of muted trumpet. Complementing this, Batti Batti's own Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana lay down a typically deep atmospheric houser with a few twists and hidden melodies in the shape of title track "Tribal Roots" and the 12" is further embellished by productions from debutant Lars Behrenroth and Mexican duo Romeo C & Alhan G who have previously been featured on a digital Batti Batti release.
