  6. The World Tonight (5:57)
  7. The Tenant (4:12)
Review: Quite a number of techno fans will go weak at the knees when they spot this expansive collaboration between longtime friends and occasional studio partners Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock. It's their first combined release since 2013. Both slabs of wax are full of high quality, atmospheric, late night techno workouts, from the creepy riffs and off-kilter drums of "Phantom Studies", and the horror-influenced post-dubstep shuffle of "The Room", to the raging, mind-altering dancefloor heaviness of "Bay Boy" and sparse, minimalist techno closer "The Tenant". Given their abilities as producers, we'd expect nothing less than superbly produced, club-ready cuts. Predictably, Phantom Studies delivers that in spades.

Czeslawa (12")
Cat: OSTGUTTON 05. Rel: 01 Feb 07
  1. Czeslawa
  2. Warszawa
Review: "Czeslawa" is a track Ben Klock tailor made for his sets at Berghain. As he says, "I wanted to have another hypnotic track for my sets which is not too much arranged". The track is a beast, slightly infused with acid, subtly grilling the dancefloor in a way you won't forget too quickly. This is pure techno for the wee hours of the morning. The b-side, "Warszawa", is more playful. The arrangement oozes with high spirits and a swing the makes this track a sure contestant for the primetime. When the snappy strings set in, both rave veterans and novices will embrace each other blissfully.

  1. Compression Session 1
  2. Static Test
  3. Compression Session 2
Review: Long associated with the harder side of techno - on the evidence of his recent mix and pretty much any of his longer club sets, unfairly so - this release sees Berghain Ben Klock attempt to show a more musical flavour. The first version of the title track sees airy, spacey Detroit chords copper-fastened to a typically dense Klock drum pattern, with both seemingly disparate elements acting in unison to create a climax that's as epic as Berghain's Gotham City architecture. A similar approach applies on the second version: it features the same snappy drums and crackling percussion underpinning Klock's previously undocumented lush leanings, but despite this, it would be wrong to assume that it's merely a continuation of the first version. Tellingly, there are also dark, droning tones and hints of the ruthlessly utilitarian approach of his colleague, Marcel Dettmann - and these nuances are also audible on the third and final track, "Static Test". Although there is a building chord sequence, it sounds like a distraction to the main event - a rolling, functional techno rhythm, powered by whiplash percussion and an underlying hint of menace. Top release.

October (12")
Cat: BPITCHCTRL 165. Rel: 10 Jan 08
  1. October
  2. Similarity
Review: Dark seasons are coming closer - Ben makes them sound like dark clouds of an approaching thunder storm. But in order
not to get too frozen, he also delivers the remedy: forcing you onto the dancefloor until sweat drops down your forehead.
Matching the title, 'October', Ben Klock's track on the a-side is not only one for dark, cold and rainy days: a groovy beat
pounds constantly for the full length of nine minutes, until the hihats come in and give the track its cherry on the cake that
will make every dancefloor boil over. Depths direct a marching rhythm. Again, everything done right. We are already looking
forward to get to know how Ben will experience the rest of the eleven months of the year. The flipside of this 12" is a surprise,
'Similarity' alludes to a similarity that's just not to be found. The bassline purls slowly as an intro to the seven minute tune. The
hihat pushes everything forward and forward. This track is a must on every MP3 player while going downhill on icy slopes -
high-speed of course. And while having a warm-up drink, or before, or after.

  1. Ben Klock - "Sirens" (8:26)
  2. Ryan Elliott - "Smith Lake" (6:03)
  3. Len Faki - "Rainbow Data" (ambient mix) (4:53)
Review:  Part nine of ten in Ostgut Ton's tenth various artists compilation and they're pulling out the big guns now to celebrate proceedings with a big bang. Star resident Ben Klock has taken quite a long hiatus from production but he's still got it, as shown on the tunnelling and cyclical cut "Sirens". Fellow resident and Detroit ex-pat Ryan Elliott serves up the soulful and emotive "Smith Lake" which is brilliant and reminds us of Exos or "Dead Eye" era Baby Ford. Finally resident party animal Len Faki surprises many with the ambient mix of his undisputed anthem "Rainbow Delta" and it is absolutely sublime; you can just drift away to this one, you'll see!

Review: Already brandishing one timeless mix CD in his armoury with that Berghain mix, Ben Klock becomes the latest incumbent in the highly regarded Fabric mix series. No 66 in the series finds the Berghain resident taking us on an undulating journey through late night techno, casually slipping between obtuse, heads-down fare, blunt machine rhythms and shuffling, hypnotic grooves. The mix is naturally well constructed and beautifully executed, with plenty of sneaky re-edits, remixes and original productions from the man himself. Musically, there are few surprises, but that's not the point; Klock is a man you turn to for proper techno. It doesn't get much more techno than Fabric 66.

  6. DVS1 - "In The Middle" (6:39)
  7. Trevino - "Sombre Tones" (4:53)
Review: The good chaps over at Hardwax, Klockworks' own distribution network, are calling this a "perfectionist techno compilation" and, in their own words, it comes "warmly recommended". We agree with both of statements, and believe this to be a fine piece of work from the Ben Klock collective. Perhaps listeners won't hear anything drastically game-changing in here, but it is certainly all dance music of the highest calibre, from a collection of artists who have truly crafted a neat and elegant vision of techno music. On this double, the first in an upcoming series, there's a mixture of old and new faces all coming together to showcase the sound they've been so close to over the years; the wonderful Sterac makes an appearance with a refreshingly off-kilter blur of dub techno on "Lately", while Ben Klock himself comes through with the ice-cold bleeps of "Twenty", and the mighty DVS1 blasts out some penetrative percussion folds on "In The MIddle. Trevino rocks the boat with "Sombre Tones", whereas relative newcomers Etapp Kyle and Jon Hester turn in their own 5am bullets.
