Review: It'd be all to easy to consider Bear's Den a part of the new folk explosion of the last few years, and to talk of them in the same breath as the likes of Mumford And Sons (who they've toured with) and Lumineers, yet Islands bears testimony to the fact that is a band with a lot more strings to their bow, not to mention a skill and deftness of touch that sets them apart. With a refreshing grasp of texture and luminous songwriting, this debut sets out its stall as a rich and heartfelt collection of songs with a lyricism and quiet intensity that makes it as likely to appeal to fans of Damien Rice and Martyn Joseph as Snow Patrol and Frightened Rabbit.

Review: Despite having found initial attention via the modern British folk scene that also spawned Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling et al, Bear's Den have managed to carve our a distinct identity for themselves, and this second album sees them building on this with aplomb and ingenuity. Maintaining their trademark heart-on-sleeve approach, and harnessing their Ivor Norvello-worthy songwriting chops to electronic soundscapes and sweeping melodic traditions that extend through hazy recollections of the '70s and '80s, 'Read Earth & Pouring Rain' is the sound of this duo striking out as global contenders for widescreen pop supremacy.
