Review: Shapeshifter is the second EP by Aurora Halal, artist and creator of NY's Mutual Dreaming parties & the Sustain-Release festival. The EP dives deeper into the unique sound world introduced by last year's Passageway, its 5 tracks a deftly conjured ride through liquid emotive states. Shimmering waves of dark hypnotic energy rise and fall, evoking both synthetic plasmoid menace and soft sighing warmth, all brought to life by Halal's nuanced and rapidly evolving sound design.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: In an age of over-information, it's refreshing to see Aurora Halal take her time with the Mutual Dreaming label, which notches up just its third release since launching in 2014. It's also the New York scene leader's first record in three years, and it's worth the wait. Some elements are familiar - Halal still has a keen instinct for heavy-hearted synth lines shaped out in bold curves, but the level of expression going into these tracks makes each one stand out like a striking painting. From the eerie mood of "Fattal 22" to the crunchy bleep workout "Nasty II", the character just oozes out of Halal's productions. With a remix from Wata Igarashi thrown into the mix as well, this is a record loaded with fresh and powerful takes on techno.

Review: Bushwick venue Bossa Nova Civic Club is one of Brooklyn's more recent additions, yet has become a focal point for some of NYC's key figures with events featuring representatives from L.I.E.S. and The Bunker complementing guests like Jacques Renault and Anthony Naples. Emboldened by this prospering creative vibe, Bossa Nova Civic Club have teamed up with Sisterjam, a local consultation, management and event promotion collective for a series of 12" EPs under the banner Bushwick Is Melting. This first volume features four tracks from Brooklyn-based producers, each reflecting a different side to the area's musical underground. L.I.E.S. artist Marcos Cabral contributes, as does his Runaway partner Jacques Renault who teams up with NYC techno veteran Mark Verbos, whilst there is also music from Mannequin Records act Dusk, and Aurora Halal, the person behind the Mutual Dreaming parties who makes her solo production debut with "Hazy G".
