The Fifth Planet EP
Cat: DSRC 4. Rel: 09 Sep 15
  1. Transit (7:10)
  2. From Our Minds To Yours (6:56)
  3. The Fifth Planet (11:32)
Review: Last year, Dutch producers Robin Koek and Nick Lapien impressed with a couple of contributions to EPs on Prologue and Tikita under the Artefakt alias. Here, they've been given a chance to showcase their sound further, via a debut 12" for the mighty Delsin imprint. As the title suggests, they're stargazing sorts, and all three tracks feel like they were inspired - in part, at least - by the original futurist ethos of Detroit techno. Of course, there are other influences - see the tumbling, intelligent techno style synthesizer melodies and acid flashes of "Transit", or the attractive depth and ambient chords of "From Our Mind To Yours" - but these simply serve to enhance the prevailing mood.

The Final Theory
Cat: FIELD 21. Rel: 28 Jul 16
  1. The Final Theory (10:34)
  2. Moving Horizon (7:26)
  3. Solaris (6:14)
Review: One of Artefakt aka Robin Koek and Nick Lapien's first records was The Fifth Planet, which appeared on Delsin. Now the duo surfaces on another local Dutch labels for Theory. Lapien is better known for his ebm/wave-influenced work as Metropolis, but this release sees him return to deep Detroit-style techno. The title track effortlessly marries acidic pulses with soaring string melodies over a jerky rhythm. "Moving Hori-zon" follows a similar path with 303s and atmospheric synths singing in unison over an angular groove. The pair take the tempo down but don't abandon their love of spell-binding melodies on closing track "Solaris".

  6. Return To Reason (7:26)
  7. Tapeloop 1 (4:55)
Review: Since first emerging in 2014, Dutch duo Artefakt has earned a reputation for delivering spacey, melodious techno tracks that mines both classic Detroit techno, and British style 'intelligent techno' for inspiration. On this hotly anticipated debut album, they cast their net a little wider, including denser rhythms and more left of centre sounds amongst the starry melodies, intergalactic chords, and sparkling drum machine beats. It's a formula that consistently delivers results, from the undulating, tribal-influenced rhythms and emotion-rich musicality of "Entering The City", to the angry, acid-fuelled onslaught of "Return To Reason", via the sun-kissed electro brilliance of "Somatic Dreams".

  6. Inverted Forest (7:18)
  7. Celluloid Dreams (6:46)
  8. Nimbus (6:17)
Review: It would be fair to say that Artefakt have not succumbed to the pitfalls of "difficult second album syndrome". In fact, "Monsoon" is arguably an even stronger and more entertaining set than their lauded 2017 debut on Delsin, "Kinship". Its genius lies in the Dutch duo's ability to craft atmospheric, dancefloor-ready techno cuts that prioritize mood and melody as much as bustling beats and rhythmic intensity. While their inherent grasp of atmosphere is best personified by the album's opening and closing ambient cuts, it can also be heard in the broken techno hypnotism of "Inverted Forest", the trance-influenced grooves and dreamy electronics of "Monsoon" and the yearning, early morning throb of "Vertigo".

Organic Elements EP
  1. Artefakt - "Curvature Of Mind" (7:42)
  2. Alan Backdrop - "Quaraman" (6:49)
  3. Ben Gibson - "Floating Shadows" (6:46)
  4. Tripsolate & Redundaent - "Akay" (9:50)
Review: Bari, Puglia based SUBOSC is helmed by producer Kaelan and presents four excursions through the more hypnotic and cerebral strains of techno. Berlin's Artefakt starts off on the A side with with the trance inducing reductionism of "Curvature Of Mind", while Italian Alan Backdrop returns after what seems like a long absence from the scene, but he's back in form on the exquisite sound design of "Quaraman". On the flip there's Kiwi Ben Gibson with the Millsian touch of "Floating Shadows" which will certainly draw you down into the abyss, while local duo Tripsolate & Redundaent offer up something a bit more different on the electro/dub techno crossover of "Akay" and as unusual as this hybrid must sound, it really works and is truly a highlight. Tip!

Cat: FIELD 08. Rel: 06 Sep 12
  1. Artefakt - "Mirror Society"
  2. Mark Du Mosch - "Dwelling"
  3. Steffi - "Full Glory"
  4. Area Forty One - "Prtctn"
Review: The ever-dependable vinyl arm of the Dutch deep techno stable Field Records continues apace into its eighth outing with four carefully selected inner space travellers perfectly suited to the hazy end of the party. Artefakt kicks off with a brooding jaunt through interlocking 4/4 grooves and luscious Detroit pads, while Mark Du Mosch opts for a more punishing tone to his fuzzed out techno. Steffi locks in for a smooth and focused bath of deep house, while Area Forty One switches things up with a refined and textured take on electronica propelled by a prominent broken beat.

10 YRS RMX EP2 (Markus SuckuT, BNJMN, Aubrey, Tripeo mixes)
Cat: JR 009.2. Rel: 28 Oct 19
  1. AWOL - "54 973379, -1 614705" (Markus Suckut remix) (7:07)
  2. Artefakt - "Wanderings" (BNJMN remix) (5:54)
  3. Luke Hess - "TDY" (Aubrey remix) (6:50)
  4. Deep'a & Biri - "Pilgrim" (Tripeo Journey mix) (5:48)
Review: Jaunt continue their 10 year celebrations with another strong cast of remixers taking their vision of techno even further out from the point of origin. Markus Suckut is up first, remixing AWOL with a blissful, almost Balearic leaning version that places piano chords front and centre. BNJMN takes on Artefakt's "Wanderings", digging it into the undergrowth for a gritty but submerged beatdown. Aubrey brings a little of his wildstyle charm to Luke Hess' "TDY", all bouncing drums, raining acid and delightfully wonky chords. Then Tripeo rounds things off with a boisterous take on Deep'a & Biri's "Pilgrim", using clattering drums and evocative atmospherics to create an epic trip.

Deep House
  1. Hiver - "Itria"
  2. Artefakt - "Wanderings"
  3. Hinode - "Vision"
  4. Region - "Cosmic"
Review: Jaunt Records' 10 year celebrations are spanning a series of 12"s that feature a broad spectrum of artists searching for the ultimate deep techno fix. The four contenders that occupy this Sea release all have their own agenda, but they sit together perfectly. Hiver weaves illustrious pads in between nimble electro drums and bubbling acid bass, while Artefakt creates eerie, fractured acid meanderings to send a shiver down your spine. Hinode does some deft break choppage to create a dreamy trip for the up all night crew, and then Region rolls the record out on an emotive tip while keeping the rhythm section pumped up for the floor.

Field 10 (12")
Cat: FIELD 10. Rel: 27 Jun 13
  1. Roswell Return - "Probe 7"
  2. R-A-G - "Siel"
  3. Delta Funktionen - "Motor"
  4. Artefakt - "The Other Sun"
  5. Metropolis - "Void"
Review: Positively brimming with otherwordly activity in the realm of techno, the latest Field brings together five hearty visions from artists that avidly embrace the experimental remit of the label. Roswell Return is an intermittent project that excels in ambient music of a less fluffy, more tense kind. R-A-G by comparison is decidedly direct, even if his reduced house comes laden with emotional baggage, and Delta Funktionen again notches the pace up with a peculiar kind of acid squelch over utterly straight-ahead drums. On the flip Artefakt gets into a perfect Artificial Intelligence reverie, while Metropolis bliss out on a bed of anchorless synths.
