Not Waiting Anymore (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: UMHS 02. Rel: 13 Sep 12
Deep House
  1. Not Waiting Anymore
  2. Munged
  3. Brazil
Review: The amount of new records being pressed up on high quality, heavyweight vinyl is nice to see. This 12" from Area on freshly minted imprint Until My Heart Stops is one such piece of wax. Musically, it's an equally attractive proposition, delivering glitchy, atmospheric deep house with a twist. Opener "Not Waiting Any More" is the brightest - and arguably dancefloor-friendly - of the bunch, building a twinkling groove around a superb cut-up vocal sample and some distant atmospherics. "Until My Heart Stops" if cracklier and murkier, pushing distorted samples to the limit in pursuit of wonky thrills. "Brazil", meanwhile, is starry IDM with a twist.

Pop Art (12")
Cat: ES 026. Rel: 16 May 13
Techno
  1. Pop Art
  2. Retroesque
  3. Metal Passenger
Review: Area's Pop Art is one of the more intriguing EPs to come through Juno HQ so far this year, and the producer's second outing on Anton Zap's Ethereal Sound after the Innate Obscurity EP in 2010. Merge Dettmann beats with Stroboscopic Artifacts atmospheres, Mo Wax sampling techniques and Lee Gamble manipulations, and you're in right ball park of what to expect from Pop Art. All three tracks on the EP are coated in a distorted haze of crunchy analogue and overcast textures, which are then embedded within Ethereal Sound's deepest of deep house vibes and leftfield ambience.

  1. Bourbon Skies
  2. Bourbon Skies (Vakula remix)
  3. Bourbon Skies (DJ Sprinkles St Petersburg Three Four Blues remix)
Review: Having made some initial splashes with their sought after compilations, Russian label Arma spread their remit further with this EP from Chicago's Area. "Bourbon Skies" is an instantly engaging track, taking a roughly hewn yet also sparse bump of a house groove from wooden drums and splaying sinister vocal sneers around it in a bath of effects. What pins this together is an equally menacing bassline that growls and purs underneath the action, making for a beguiling and alluring jam. Vakula switches this up with a thoroughly soothing remix that lays the bubbles on thick, as sumptuous ripples of melody come rising through a rich delay in a perfect antithesis to the A-side.

  2. Area vs Jack - "One Less Me" (1:44)
  3. XXeXX (Crushkilled version) (8:09)
Review: New York's Sequencias label returns with the mysterious Area, an artist who has appeared on everything from Ethereal Sound to Until My Heart Stops. The EP begins with "Circadian", a bass-heavy mind-sweller with subtle nuances of breaks and warm glows of techno. On the B-side, Area teams up with Jack for "One Less Me", a beatless experimentation featuring sci-fi vocal sample and swarms of bass, while "XxeXX (Crushkilled version)" combines drones with lo-fi noise to produce a truly singular piece of abstract sound.

Techno
  1. Sweated
  2. Still Moving Away
  3. Vicious Like A Koala
  4. Tessellated Rhubarb
Review: The headspace Area's Kimochi Sound label inhabits is very much compatible with that of Rough House Rosie, and both labels have similar legacies of championing unsung talents. Now Area appears on Rough House Rosie with some of his beguiling abstractions on the deep, smoked out techno blueprint, and it's a match made in heaven. "Sweated" courses through a mysterious landscape of blown out low end riffs and distant textures, while "Still Moving Away" locks into a steadfast techno roll that complements the lingering notes hovering overhead. "Vicious Like A Koala" is a minimal workout based around an unusual drum set and a looming one-note bassline, and "Tessellated Rhubarb" finishes the EP off with some haunting ambient musings.

Ambient/Drone
  1. Through The Wall (8:08)
  2. Entireless (Donato Dozzy Genesis Chamber mix) (9:20)
  3. Everything Thrown Away (12:01)
  4. Pop Life (with Eltron John) (9:05)
Review: Area returns to his Kimochi label to deliver a rich musing on ambient approaches from a techno mindset, and he's brought some esteemed friends along for the ride. "Through The Wall" is a magnificent slice of melancholy that leads the A-side in a cloud of billowing chords that undulate through modulation, while "Everything Thrown Away" takes a more intimate approach with quietly drifting synth tones and subtle FX processing. Donato Dozzy's "Genesis Chamber" mix of "Entireless" is a more extravagant affair with layers of noise and feedback working into the beatless space, and Eltron John's guest spot on "Pop Life" adds further aquatic shapes to the fluid tones contained within.

Techno
  1. Area - "Entireless" (9:31)
  2. Donato Dozzy - "Genesis Chamber Beats" (9:26)
Review: Chicago producer M50, aka Area, and hypnotic techno don Donato Dozzy inaugurate new mysterious imprint Tesuji. On the A side Area tears it up on "Entireless," an industrial strength monster with grinding and razor sharp synth textures buzzing about the place in restrained fury and reminiscent of Regis or more recently Perc. On the flip Signor Dozzy serves up a surprisingly fierce yet restrained effort that's powered by all the atmosphere and tunnelling vision that he's renowned for. Sure he had to work some pretty intense source material, but he's no doubt made this one his own!

Review: For the first vinyl release on Sound & Object we are thrilled to have Chicago resident Area bring us the EP Forbidden Plateau. In Forbidden Plateau Area is able to create a mood of equal parts confident swagger and tentative emotion. Rich pads, loping piano melodies and robust rhythms swirl and mix to land somewhere between house and techno. The 3 original tracks - and a remix from Mikaere - create an EP that is full of space, details, bright edges and dark corners all framed by lively beats.

  1. Luv Jam - "Crickets & Bats"
  2. Area - "DJ Tool House"
  3. Plas Vegas - "Fernhill Loop"
  4. Mystic Jungle - "Houze Leizure"
Review: After a period of dormancy, Uncharted Audio signalled their return in triumphant style with a superb long player from electronica crew Octavcat and the London label show they mean business with the launch of a new vinyl only various artists 12" series. As the title suggests, the Dots series seeks to join the dots between the international house and techno community and features contributions from Chicago, New Zealand, Italy and the UK. The perennially under rated Luv Jam reps home soil with the excellent exercise in dubbed out house that is "Crickets & Bats" whilst Area goes abstract on "DJ Tool House". On the B Side, "Fernhill Loop" from New Zealander Plas Vegas is a oven warm piece of ambient techno that has set opener written into it's DNA whilst Rio Padice ends proceedings on a typically raw note with "Houze Leizure" under his Mystic Jungle alias.
