  3. 13 Beat(Less) (7:44)
  4. Shielding Rework (7:10)
Review: Earthen Sea adds to the Kimochi Sound with a soulful examination of indistinct margins, suffused with dusky haze. It's a heady atmosphere and has a palpable heaviness throughout. Starting the record are the concrete reverberations of You Don't Never Know, followed by the murky ebb and flow of Fly. 13 Beat(less) is diffused ambience.
Shielding fittingly closes the record, and weaves Earthen Sea's many textures with intricate syncopation.

  1. Ambient City 1994 (part 1) (20:12)
  2. Ambient City 1994 (part 2) (13:15)
Review: Sahko has decided to offer up a series of releases focusing on choice unreleased works from the late, great Mika Vainio's archives. The first, "Arc 1", showcases a 32-minute piece (here split into two parts to fit on one record) originally recorded in 1994 for his Ambient City radio project at Helsinki's Museum of Contemporary Art. It's a sparse, stripped back affair, with Vainio alternating between drowsy, elongated ambient chords, crackling drones, fuzzy white noise, doom-laden tones, creepy sonic movements and hushed moments of intense electronic bliss. It's not Vainio's most blissful work, but it is hugely enjoyable; an experimental ambient journey that's arguably darker and more unsettling than many of his records as O.

Review: After years spent offering up impressive blends of ambient, drone, electronica and experimental drum and bass as ASC, James Clements has decided to commit more time to Comit (sorry), an alternative project which first surfaced via a debut single in 2016. Here the San Diego-based Brit delivers a first full-length excursion under the alias. There's plenty to soothe and seduce on the eight tracks stretched across two slabs of wax, from the undulating, occasionally skittish beats and sweeping chord sequences of opener "Behind Dulled Eyes" and the icy, doom-laden electronic melancholy of "Reverie", to the early Black Dog Productions flex of "Clouded Over" and the dubbed-out, slow motion bliss of "Soft Focus".

  1. Dream/Dron Sax/Desert/Africa/Rioja/A View/Eleven (19:25)
  2. Continue/Moments/Swamp/Lion/Seagull (19:37)
Review: Astral Industries have shaped a sizable portion of their catalogue around the work of The Chi Factory, and so it continues with this release from core member of the Dutch group, Jacobus Derwort. "Bamboo Music" gathers together some of the music Derwort released on tape back in 1987 along with other unearthed curios, all stitched together into the mystical trip that defines all Chi Factory releases. This is Fourth World voyaging for the deep divers, an evocative delight from imagined lands steeped in organic warmth and cosmic mysticism, and we should be very thankful Astral are on hand to do the fine job of pressing it to wax, not least in those fantastic Theo Ellsworth sleeves.

Review: Uwe Schmidt - he of Atom Heart, Atom TM and Senor Coconut fame - has used an insane number of aliases over the years, so you'd be forgiven for not knowing about the sole album he produced as Dots. It first appeared on CD way back in 1994 and has long been considered something of a slept on classic by '90s ambient fans. Here it appears on vinyl for the very first time courtesy of Astyral Industries, a label that knows a thing or two about unearthing forgotten ambient treasure. Stylistically, there are hints to some of Schmidt's other work - a dub bassline here, an abstract motif there - but for the most part the becalmed and beguiling soundscapes have more in common with the work of German ambient legend Pete Namlook.

  8. The Sun Beats Stronger As Each Day Passes (3:21)
Review: While much of L.I.E.S founder Ron Morelli's production work has tended towards the dark and dystopian, there's something surprisingly becalmed and gentle about his latest full-length excursion, fifth solo album "Man Walks The Earth". Of course, there are still some slightly bleak, detached soundscapes dotted throughout the album (see "30 Million Years To Recover", the Radiophonic Workshop influenced "A Long Walk at Night" and the icy, off-key tipsiness of "Uninvited Brute"), for the most part Morelli deals in slowly shifting motifs, sustained ambient melodies and reverb-drenched electronics. The result is an album that's as mind-altering and otherworldly as it is accessible and entertaining.

Review: Welcome to the world Cosmocities Records, a new French label whose first release is an incredible, triple-vinyl collection of what it calls "rare and beautiful instrumental tracks". It's a rather eclectic set, all told, but thanks to immaculate track selection and programming it hangs together exceptionally well. Flick through the clips and you'll find some next-level ambient bliss (Pepe), a crazy, flute-laden percussion workout (DJ Maboku), sunrise-ready dub techno (Segue), melodious ambient techno (Leif), Balearic space jazz (Jitwam), warm analogue deep house (Jaime Read) and a clutch of cuts that blur the boundaries between jazz-funk and broken beat. In other words, it's a stylistically diverse collection of brilliant electronic music that you'll want to listen to again and again.

Review: We are honored to release a 5-LP Vinyl Box Set from one of the key figures of New Age music, Suzanne Doucet from her incredible run of cassette only albums from 1982-84. Suzanne was born in Tuebingen, Germany where as a three year old, Doucet discovered her innate artistic gifts. Instinctively, she was always drawing, playing music, singing, and writing. By the age of 18, Suzanne was an established pop star in Germany with several #1 hits. She also made her mark as a composer, actress, TV moderator, director, engineer, and producer. At age 25. she took a sabbatical from the music business to go on a spiritual odyssey. In 1970 she released a triple album of field recordings and mind-expanding psychedelia under the name Zweistein. For the next ten years, she developed her own style of New Age music while exploring many areas of metaphysics and spiritual practices, including astrology, music therapy, tarot, yoga and the Kabbalah.

In 1979, Doucet launched a record label in West Germany named Isis, after the Egyptian goddess of feminine divinity. She formed the duo New Age with her musical partner Christian Buhner, and released the 1982 cassette album 'Transformation', which was inspired by a visit to Findhorn, Scottland. Suzanne and Christian recorded acoustic sounds such as waterdrops and vocals using sophisticated sound manipulation devices and muli-track recording techniques. The only electronic instruments used were the Jupiter 8 and the Roland TR-808 drum machine. The next year the duo began work on the follow-up 'Transmission', which released on cassette in 1983. After this release, Buhner and Doucet moved to Los Angeles, hoping to find more kindred spirits in the burgeoning New Age scene there. Doucet met Tajalli (William Wichman) whom with she would collaborate with on the 1984 cassette 'Brilliance'. That same year Doucet married Video Artist and Yoga instructor James Bell. Together they recorded two albums, 'Reflecting Light Vol. 1' and 'Reflecting Light Vol. 2', using a Roland JX-3P, TR-909 and a Steinway Grand Piano. Both cassettes had mirrored covers, a reference to the Zweistein jacket 14 years prior.

For the first time Suzanne's cassette music is available on vinyl, in a limited run of 300 box sets. Each is stamped with a rainbow foil of the goddess Isis and includes an 8-page full color magazine designed by Eloise Leigh with liner notes, photos and reflections by Suzanne. We also have a small amount of stand alone albums available housed in jackets using the original cassette artwork. All albums have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Doucet's career placed her at the forefront of blossoming New Age Music movement. "People all over the world become more and more inner directed", she says, "New Age Music is the music of the new millennium. We are all pioneers, our work is on the vibrational level, which is the essence of all being. Our inner environment and the outer environment are co-dependent. This is the reason why music is so important for our lives. Whatever I can do to bring consciousness expanding music to as many people as possible, I'll do... and I'll devote my total being to whatever I am doing!"

Review: Like Delsin label mates Conforce and Claro Intelecto, veteran producer John Beltran seems incapable of producing duff albums. "Hallo Androiden", his first full length outing for two years, is another wonderfully atmospheric, melodic and emotive set that recalls the producer's impeccable 1990s output. The nine tracks are as lushly produced as you'd expect, with Beltran effortlessly drifting between eyes-closed ambient techno, lilting electronica, slowly shifting sunset soundscapes and the kind of grandiose, life affirming ambient compositions that have long been a feature of the veteran producer's work. As with much of his output, there are enough intricate details and emotion-stirring motifs to suggest that the album will sound just as good on the 50th listen as it does the first.

  1. Palm Sugar Candy (15:56)
  2. Simian Angel (19:59)
Review: Since 2012, much of Oren Ambarchi's solo has been focused on the intense potential of driving rhythms. "Simian Angel", the experimentalist guitarist and percussionist's 21st solo set, is a far more picturesque and slowly shifting affair. While there are distant drums present on opener "Palm Sugar Candy" (provided by Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista), these are buried a little in the mix, with Ambarchi's becalmed electronic tones, slow motion ambient chords and distinctive, effects-laden guitars taking centre stage. The results are warm, inviting and sun-kissed. The same could be said about title track "Simian Angel", an opaque, sun-bright suite of interconnected movements marked out by intricate piano solos, hazy guitar tones and visceral aural textures.

Review: There's much to admire about Andrew Wilson and John Tanner's second collaborative full-length, which sees them build on the fluid and atmospheric ambient of 2016 debut "69". Utilizing a relatively small array of instruments - mainly piano, acoustic guitar and a few choice synthesizers - the pair serves up ear-catching soundscapes wrapped in atmospheric field recordings and just the right amount of processed effects. For the most part their compositions are summery and seductive, emphasizing unfussy combinations of melodic refrains and positive chord progressions. There are, though, one or two more experimental cuts, with the tipsy, slow-motion shuffle of "Idle" and spaced-out "Safe Bird" standing out.

Review: Michael Stearns is perhaps less namechecked than many of the early ambient pioneers, but his expansive catalogue reaches back to 1977, when his first expansive synthesizer dreamscapes unfurled themselves on his own Continuum Montage label. Emotional Rescue have picked up on seminal 1981 album Planetary Unfolding, giving a much needed vinyl reissue to a classic slice of hyperboreal ambience spread across six long-form movements. Expansive, emotionally charged and constantly exploratory, this is deep space listening at its finest - an essential purchase for any lovers of truly classic, cosmic synthesizer music.

Review: As with the first SchleiBen series, Emotional Response follows the success of the second set of split releases with a stand-alone album by one of the highlights, in Neil Tolliday. Recorded over a 17-year period, the ambient, drone and noise pieces collected here offer a glimpse in to the depth of a supremely talented, thoughtful and at times, troubled musical mind. As his love for house music and the success of his Nail moniker grew and waned during the ascent 90s boom, there followed his somewhat surprising success as one half of Balearic-pop combo Bent, propelling Tolliday in to a world of indie-charts and endless touring. The eventual unhappiness of this 'music career' and increasing need for personal escapism led him start experiment new musical forms of expression. A thinker and oft-over drinker, success was viewed with a deep suspicion and introspection, drug use and later, depression. As his other music projects slowly imploded, this new, personal music was for many years, made purely for Tolliday's own absorption and comedowns. Taken from an initial 4 track recording in Nottingham in 2000, more pieces were subsequently recorded around the globe on numerous devices - old portable cassette recorders, hand held digital stereos and even mobile phones. These heavily manipulated samples were slowed down, reversed, smudged and stretched before analog and modular patching, Mellotron, editing, programming and post production were added to the melting pot. With hundreds of tracks collated, in the last few years Tolliday began putting them out via Bandcamp using different aliases, on made up record labels, with no press or mention to anyone. This would happen every 6-9 months - a new label was created with logo, band/artist names and a few albums worth of music, leaving it there for a few weeks before then deleting the lot. Here then is a snapshot of those recordings, chosen to represent the depth of music, while trying not to think too much about in to the emotions that were used in making them. With special hand painted artwork by Sam Purcell, commissioned from the artist's own photographs taken from a adjournment at Homerton hospital, the hope is to do justice to such wonderful music and present Neil Tolliday, finally an artist, shorn of pseudonyms, in a broader light.

Review: After years spent operating in the grey area where deep house, techno and tech-house meet, Raphael Ripperton has decided to indulge his ambient side. He's touched on the style on previous albums, of course, but "Contrails" marks the first time he's completely eschewed the demands of the dancefloor. He should perhaps do it more often, because it's a genuinely evocative, atmospheric and eye-opening excursion. The double album's 14 tracks are full of subtle differences and gentle stylistic shifts, from the ghostly electronics and hissing aural textures of "Lonely Walk" and the stretched-out, Tangerine Dream style analogue synthesizer fluidity of "Lavaux", to the Pete Namlook style deep space wooziness of "Where The Wind Blows" and the Steve Reich-meets-Gaussian Curve shimmer of "Dedale".

Review: Patient Sounds Intl. founder Matthew Sage describes himself as a "digital rustic" who explores "plunderphonics and sound collage, ambience and cyberpastoralia". While we imagine Sage had his tongue firmly pressed into his cheek when he wrote that, it's a fairly accurate description of new album "Catch A Blessing". The eight tracks blend music concrete, otherworldly ambient, snapshot electronics and noise, layering up disparate and often unusual elements - field recordings, brief snatches of instrumentation, fluid electronic sounds, effects-laden tones, and so on - to create pieces that are as intriguing as they are relaxed and entertaining. The whole album is pretty "out there" of course, but in the most melodious and atmospheric of ways.

Review: Some five years on from the release of his brilliant debut album, "Biology", Young Marco has finally got round to producing another full-length excursion. This one is similarly special and forms part of Island of the Gods' excellent "Island Explorer" series. It sees the colourful Dutch producer deliver a range of ambient and new age tracks that fuse his usual ear-catching electronics and 1980s synthesizer sounds with traditional Indonesian instrumentation recorded on a trip to the country a few years ago (one of his grandparents hails from the Asian nation, so it was a pilgrimage of sorts). It's all hugely atmospheric, evocative and entertaining, offering a humid but sparkling array of soundscapes that reminded us a little of Hanyo von Oosterom's work as Chi Factory.

Review: Since joining the label at the turn of the millennium, Scott Morgan AKA Loscil has become one of the admirably experimental imprint's most prolific artists. "Equivalents" is Morgan's ninth album for the label and sees him offer up eight meditations on a hazy, spaced-out theme. It's a slow-burn affair, where processed melodic elements, held-note chords and drone style aural textures slowly move across the sound space. It's a formula that guarantees goodness from start to finish, with the pulsing "Equivalent 3", ghostly "Equivalent 6", Mr Cloudy-esque "Equivalent 2" and the becalmed and poignant "Equivalent 8" standing out.

Review: We are definitely not worthy. Or at least only just worthy. Arriving on stunning transparent wax this double header from 2000 combines two legendary forces in ambient and stripped compositions, making a very clear statement of intent. Buy it now or forever deal with the fallout. Perhaps one of the most impressive things about the tracks presented in this special edition, limited run package is the sonic depth achieved without forsaking minimalism. There doesn't necessarily appear to be much going on, but the soundcapes- or perhaps more accurately soundscape, given the quartet is wholly coherent and interconnected- feels so dense it's as if you could reach out and touch the work. Growing, building, expanding and mutating, the resulting tension and brooding atmosphere positions this as a crowning achievement on the part of both Finland's Pan Sonic and American Charlemagne Palestine.

Tracing Back The Radiance (LP + MP3 download code)
Cat: MEX 256. Rel: 23 Jul 19
  1. Palace Of Time (20:28)
  2. Joy (5:02)
  3. Tracing Back The Radiance (15:01)
Review: Performed by an ensemble sporting an intriguing array of instruments (harp, bass clarinet, flute, violin, pedal steel, piano, synthesizer and vibraphone included), Jefre Cantu Ledesma's latest album is a wonderfully drowsy and evocative affair full of drifting ambient motifs, slowly shifting melodic movements and gentle, blink-and-you-miss-them solos. The scene is set magnificently by 21-minute opener "Palace of Time", where effects laden instrumental passages meander across the soundspace to the accompaniment of sporadic percussion and a lone, operatic voice. The aptly titled "Joy", with its haunting clarinet refrain and woozy vibraphone melodies, comes and goes all too quickly before "Tracing Back The Radiance" offers a triumphantly blissful conclusion to a brilliant and beguiling album.
