Review: Ever wonder where Music From Memory founders Abel Nagengast, Jamie Tiller & Tako Reyenga got the name of their label from? The answer is obscure New York musician Vito Ricci, whose diverse and quite stunning discography of private press releases is compiled on this wonderful retrospective I Was Crossing A Bridge. Active during the '80s musical heyday of New York, Ricci description as "one of the unsung heroes of New York's downtown music scene" is fully qualified on this 18 track double LP release, which contains such a dizzying array of musical styles it's tempting to call him a musical genius. The three strong suite of "Inferno" tracks in particular could easily be mistaken for the work of Container, and that Ricci was capable of that as well as some tongue in cheek coke boogie like "I'm At That Party Right Now" means Music From Memory should be applauded once more.

  6. Lapis Lazuli (6:34)
Review: An adventure through time and space from Gravity Graffiti label boss Riccardo Schiro aka Maladetti/Richeart. This is his second appearance on the label thus far. Slo-mo shamanic techno and tribal trance awaits listeners on the Dunas EP. This will no doubt appeal to fans of early Plastikman circa "Afrika", natural/electronic system or Refracted. Italians in particular have a real knack for this style of techno, following in the footsteps of legends such as Donato Dozzy, Neel and Nuel. Go deep into the exotic with the polyrhythmic hypnotica of "Esoterico" or "Trans-Garde" but there's also a couple of delightful curveballs in here. The frenetic acid electro monster "Essoterica" had us excited, as well as the tripped-out ambient dub excursion "Lapis Lazuli" which closes out this fine EP in great style.

  12. A Saucerful Of Ambience (part XII) (6:31)
Review: Pete Nalook and Klaus Schulze's The Dark Side Of The Moog project almost single-handedly crystalised the term 'ambient' to describe a genre of music where listeners could float carefree into a world of endless sonic possibilities, and free from the constraints of formats relying on dance needs. The second edition of the series first came through in 1995, and has remained as innovative in 2018, which truly marks these two as having been at the cutting-edge of music since they first came through. The latter, Schulze, is a legend in his own right, but Namlook's heritage is now a serious contender within the looser end of the electronic world. The twelve parts of "A Saucerful Of Ambience" are the deepest, most touching moments of beatless music that we have on our shelves, and we would recommend picking a copy up before it's too late. So much dreaminess onto two slabs of wax.

Review: Klaus Schulze and Peter Namlook's The Dark Side Of The Moog series receives a timely update on vinyl, having only been reissued a handful of times since its first release in the early to mid 90s. Much like the second volume, which should be bought in conjuction with this opener, you'll be stuck to find any better sources of ambient or drone on these charts. Yes, the modern kids might verge further into the heart of the rave, but this music has a way of lifting the soul that's rarely matched. Led by images of time and space, the legendary duo's music is truly capable of tele-transporting you into a higher state of consciousness; the best thing about it is how rich and fresh it sounds upon each new listen. Highly recommended.

Review: Saucer-eyed ambient sorts Seahawks may well be impressively prolific (especially for an outfit dedicated to decidedly horizontal sounds), but they rarely disappoint. Astonishingly, Eternal Beams is their 13th studio set since 2010, suggesting a work rate that would make one of their inspirations, Tangerine Dream, proud. As usual, they combine drowsy, head-in-the-clouds ambient movements with the kind of thickset aural textures usually found on drone and dub techno releases. There's a little less sun-kissed Balearic cheeriness than on some previous sets, with the duo instead inviting legendary New York artist Laraaji (he of zither playing and laughter therapy fame) to put his decidedly cosmic stamp on a number of tracks. The results are, as you'd expect, predictably impressive.

Review: Last September saw the release of Summer Cottage Soundscapes, a spontaneously recorded debut album from atmosphere-obsessed ambient techno trio Shorelights, AKA Walter Wasacz, Christopher McNamara and Echospace man Rod Modell. Here they pop up on Subwax BCN with a surprise follow-up, delivering a warm, meditative and tactile journey in eight parts. While they start said journey with a drowsy, sunset-friendly chunk of drifting ambient warmth and end it with a creepy trip into dub techno deep space, in between you'll find more obviously dancefloor-focused affairs amongst the horizontal goodness. While these naturally include their usual atmospheric sonic textures and gentle melodies, they're far bolder and more club-centric than the trio's previous excursion.

Review: Originally released on Record Store Day in limited quantities, An Aggressive Chain Smoking Alcolohic is the debut solo album (under his given name, at least) from Xiu Xiu member Jamie Stewart. It was apparently written almost entirely using modular synthesizers and produced by Room 40 founder Lawrence English, an artist who knows much about making dark, twisted and otherworldly electronic pieces. The results are, for the most part, attractively out-there in the best possible way, with the duo sashaying between discordant soundscapes, clandestine ambient moodiness, panic-in-space weirdness, droning intensity and bizarre dystopian noise.

Review: The Schleissen series stands as one of the finest facets of the ever expanding Emotional Response empire, initially kicking off in 2015 with releases from artists such as Harmonious Thelonious, Abul Mogard, Don't DJ and Sad City. Now the series has been fired up once again with the exotic tones of Tomaga, recently found lurking round the likes of Meakusma and Hands In The Dark. It's an exotic live band sound that touches on Fourth world exploration and motorik drive, but certainly with its own unique slant. The B side of this particular 12" is given over to Neil Tolliday, most commonly found rolling out tech house as Nail and many other names, but here indulging in gorgeous, layered minimal ambient pieces with looping melodic phrases to soothe rather than groove.

Review: Dynamo Dreesen's ACIDO imprint could not be functional without these sporadic mini-compilations from his co-workers and compatriots. The Berlin imprint, still waving the flag up high in the name of GOOD electronic music, returns with the third helping of My House Is Not Your House, a series showcasing the imprint's well-known talents and less established new entries, in what is always an indirect 'house' coating. PG Sounds kicks off with an intricate percussion pattern called "Acid", while newcomer TVA slaps down a fine drum groove surrounded by all sorts of quirky melodies, and there are plenty more deviations from the likes of Chance Encounter, Roadworker, or Arrrgh. Even Dreesen himself appears, alongside port Sword Tobacco, along with Fett-Burger's Telephones moniker. Unmissable, as per usual.

Review: Efficient Space's latest release is certainly an intriguing one. It was sparked by the discovery of a CD copy of an obscure, mid-'90s album made by the late Victorian musician Peter Mumme and three Aboriginal songmen from the Yolngu people of the Arnhem Land in Australia's Northern territory. Uniquely, the album - here reissued under a new title with an additional unreleased piece - mixed the singers' traditional vocals with impeccable ambient soundscapes, gently pulsating electronic rhythms and the kind of fluid and wide-eyed synthesizer melodies more often found on '80s new age recordings. The results still sound remarkable and, thanks to the Yolngu singing style, surprisingly haunting.

Review: 34 years after Hiroshi wrote these seven startling compositions for a Tokyo fashion show, they are finally given the vinyl status they've always deserved. Previously only available on cassette, Pier & Loft has become a cult body of work for all ambient fans. Driven, melodic and laced with a sense of energy that the genre often misses. Sci-fi chamber music, if you will, the playful counterpoint between the keys on the brilliantly titled "Wavy-patterned Ice Cream" and the smouldering unwitting proto house dynamics of "The Sea In My Palm" are just two of the many beautiful, timeless highlights.
