Review: To tie in with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landings, Brian Eno has decided to put out a new edition of his decidedly spacey 1983 ambient album "Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks", which started life as the soundtrack to a long-forgotten documentary about NASA's space program. The edition is rather special, not only because it contains a remastered version of the original set created by Eno, his brother Roger and regular collaborator Daniel Lanois, but also because it contains a second disc of previously unheard material. This is not old, though, but rather brand new recordings - described as "new interpretations of the film soundtrack" - made by the Lanois and the Eno brothers late last year in a similar style. In a word: essential.

Review: Blending elements of ambient, abstract experimentalism, minimalism and modern classical, Yutaka Hirose's sole LP - 1986's "Nova + 4" - has become something of an in-demand item in recent years. Here it gets the reissue treatment, allowing those of us without deep pockets to wallow in its evocative charms. It's an intriguing affair, with Hirose drifting between beguiling (if unusual) soundscapes (see "Nova", where metallic chimes and gentle piano motifs unfurl over sustained ambient chords), sublime minimalist ambient (the echoing melodies of "In The Afternoon" and cascading bliss of "Through The Windows"), slow burn new age ("Taiko", "Humming The Sea") and deliciously experimental sound collages ("Epilogue").

Review: Neo-classical composer Christoph Berg impressed with his 2012 debut album, Paraphrases. In the time since, he's mostly worked on collaborative releases; happily, he's finally got round to producing a second solo full-length. Produced in a similar fashion to his previous output, with Berg layering up recordings of him playing violin, organ, piano and double bass alongside subtle electronics and manipulated found sounds, Conversations is a soft-focus symphony in eight parts. Full of slowly shifting movements, the album slowly shuffles between heart aching melancholy, springtime beauty and the kind of poignancy more readily associated with neo-classical heavyweights such as Nils Frahm.

Review: The appearance of Kompakt's annual Pop Ambient compilation is usually a sign that Christmas is on its way. This year's edition is naturally as soothing and heart-warming as a glass of single malt beside the fire following a heavy festive feast. Highlights include the neo-classical movements of Chuck Johnson's wintry "Brahmi", the bubbly electronics of Kenneth James Gibson's "Destined To Vacate", the cinematic sweeps and layered field recordings of Wurden and Pfieffer's "Vacate" and the gently unfurling bliss of Yui Onodera's "Nine Chairs To The Moon", which sounds like an unlikely collaboration between Johnny Nash and Brian Eno. Those after "bigger" names will enjoy the fine contributions from the Orb and T.Raumschmiere, though there are far more sublime pieces elsewhere on the CD.

Review: Since leaving his hardcore metal drummer past behind, Olafur Arnalds has gone on to become one of the most lauded composers and producers of his generation, balancing experimental work that blends neo-classical movements with most rock and abstract electronics, with acclaimed work for film and television. Re:member is the Icelander's first album since working on the Broadchurch soundtrack and undeniably his most high profile release to date. It's also fiendishly cutting edge, utilizing specially created software to trigger new sequences (as well as randomized electronic feedback) on two pianos chained to his primary instrument. These elements, naturally mixed with strings, live percussion and the multi-instrumentalist's own considered electronics, combine to create a mesmerizing and thoroughly absorbing album.

Review: Over the last decade, Jim Mroz AKA Lussuria has offered up a steady stream of albums that offer a distinctly opaque and otherwordly fusion of dark ambient, drone and electronic experimentation. "Scarlet Locusts of These Forests" is arguably amongst the best of them. It initially appeared in 2015 as a four-tape box set and here gets a release on CD for the very first time. It's wonderfully creepy, unsettling and mood enhancing in equal measure, with Mroz subtly shifting emphasis between aural dystopia and melodic enlightenment. One minute, you're listening to delay-drenched harp loops and creaking doors ("With Bated Breath (Bird In Hand)"), the next blissful ambient ("Frozen Charlotte (Scarlet Temper)"), Radio Workshop-esque analogue tones ("Blue Iris") or echoing dub techno style drones ("The Vanity Greater Than Misery").

Review: Norwegian ambient veteran Biosphere has enjoyed something of a renaissance of late, thanks in no small part to a series of essential reissues of his 1990s work. His latest release, "The Senja Recordings", is not a reissue, though, but rather his most significant and extensive new album in years. Icy, windswept and atmospheric, it was apparently recorded during extended stays on a Norwegian island over the course of four years. There's plenty of sparse, dark ambient material, of course, but also plenty of distorted but quietly melodic compositions that mirror the loneliness of his remote surroundings. He brings us closer than ever to those surroundings via extensive use of field recordings made during his time on the island, something that only enhances the listening experience.

Review: Since Emeralds disbanded earlier in the decade, Steve Hauschildt has impressed with a serious of largely overlooked albums on Kranky that showcased his innate ability to craft distinctly melodic music that sits somewhere between IDM, slowly shifting ambient, droning soundscapes and more ethereal home listening techno. Dissolvi, his first album for Ghostly International, could well be his most accomplished solo work to date. While it explores similar sonic territory to previous full-length releases, the set is bolder, more atmospheric and, at times, intensely beautiful. While undoubtedly fresh, those with long memories will note audible nods to ambient and deep techno greats of the early 1990s, including Jonah Sharp (Spacetime Continuum), Pete Namlook and, most obviously, Boards of Canada. In a word: timeless.

Review: Hailing from the Catskill Mountains, Emily A Sprague is a talented producer and sound designer emerging from the American underground. Her two self-released cassette albums "Water Memory and Mount Vision" may well have passed you by when they first snuck out in 2017 and 2018 respectively, but fortunately the ever-tuned-in RVNG Intl. are taking care of business and gathering these two wonderful releases together and presenting them as a beautifully packaged long playing release. This is the kind of delicate ambient material that suits both mindful immersion and environmental mood setting, emanating harmony and balance at every turn.

Review: Two years ago Ostgut Ton launched their ambient-leaning A-Ton imprint with "Chronicles", a fine trawl through the archives of Luke Slater's ambient techno project 7th Plain. This is the second part of a trilogy (the third and final instalment is also out now) and, like its predecessor, gathers together tracks released on General Productions between 1993 and 1995, and previously unheard material. It's as evocative, atmospheric and on-point as that previous volume, sashaying between more dancefloor-leaning fare (see the deliciously dreamy but percussively heavy "Astra Naut-E" and the Motor City flex of "JDC"), genuinely beat-free soundscapes (the Pete Namlook style bliss of "I Think I Think Too Much" and "Big Field") and cuts that shuffle further towards "Artificial Intelligence" style IDM.

Review: Ostgut Ton A-Ton completes their trilogy of compilations charting the early-to-mid-'90s ambient techno work of British producer Luke Slater under the 7th Plain alias. As with its predecessors, the eight included tracks offer a mixture of previously released fare from the project's heyday and music that's sat on dusty DAT tapes for well over two decades. Highlights come thick and fast, from the sun-bright sci-fi melodies, sustained ambient chords and bubbly acid lines of "Time Melts" and the Black Dog-ish shuffle of "Reality of Space", to the booming, club-ready "Lost", drowsy IDM cut "Think City" and the intergalactic, stretched-out bliss of brilliant closing cut "Seeing Sense".

Review: Sometime Klaus Schulze collaborator Andreas Grosser spent much of the late '70s and early '80s making experimental syntheszier music inspired by the (then) West German kosmiche scene, handing out cassettes of his recordings to anyone that was interested. The best of these unreleased works were first gathered together on 1981's Venite Vessum, a cassette-only release that now exchanges hands for large sums online. Happily, Running Back has decided to make it available on CD for the first time, stretching the spacey and otherworldly ambience of Grosser's deep space compositions - some of which bubble along gracefully for 15 minutes at a time - over the disc's duration. Thrillingly, this edition also includes a previously unheard track, the Philip Glass style synthesizer cycles and sun-bright positivity of "The Quantum Jump".

Review: Since the release of 2016's epic Gas retrospective, Box, the pioneering drone ambient producer (real name Wolfgang Voigt) has been surprisingly productive. Rausch is the lauded electronic musician's speedy follow-up to last year's Narkopop, which happened to be his first full-length for over 15 years. As you'd expect, Rausch is superb, with Voigt variously turning cinematic orchestral tracks into hybrid electro-acoustic epics. While some are beat-less and fluid, others are loopy, hypnotic and otherworldly, with the German building tension via subtle rhythm tracks that draw on techno and IDM. The results are near faultless, as Voight once again proves that he's a true master of his ambient art.

Review: Since the release of his debut 12" back in 2013, Anton Kubikov has established himself as one of the fastest-rising names in the dub techno scene. For this keenly anticipated debut album, he's flipped the script a little, delivering a set of breathtaking ambient tracks. Given the atmospheric nature of his previous productions and his obvious attention to detail, it's a move that not only makes sense, but also results in a string of brilliant highlights. Alongside dark and moody, horror-influenced soundscapes and claustrophobic, dub techno-informed pieces, you'll also find Jonny Nash-esque ambient guitar works, blissful piano compositions, gentle new age electronica and the sparkling, wall-of-sound orchestral drone of impeccable closer "Entrance".

  12. Thore Pfeiffer - "Idyll"
Review: Well it's that time of the year again. Wolfgang Voight compiles the best in ambient for his beloved label and it's more of the same high calibre ambient excursions you'd expect, like in previous editions. Starting off in truly breathtaking fashion with Stephan Matieu's "April Im Oktober", we're then treated to some new material by British icons The Orb, who present us with "Alpine Dawn" further testament to their otherworldly sense for sound. Label mainstay Mikkel Metal appears also with the sombre yet mesmerising cathedral drone of "Titan", as does Leandro Fresco, twice in fact. With both his sublime remix of Dave DK's "Veira" and his own "Configuracion de Atequa" featuring gorgeously uplifting tones reminiscent of old Gas material. Speaking of which, Voight himself appears with his mindblowing "Ruckverzauberung" from 2012 getting a brilliant modern revision by Thore Pfeiffer. Yet again, it goes without saying; this is essential listening.

Infinite Moment

  2. Divide Now
  3. Hear Your Voice
  4. Something Left, Something Right, Something Wrong

  6. Infinite Moment
Review: Kompakt staple Axel Willner returns to present his sixth full-length effort for Kompakt, following up 2016's rather brilliant LP The Follower. On his latest outing, Willner is said to have looked for inspiration outside of the studio, which opened up fresh perspectives on the creation of new music. Moreover, he has stated that in a current climate of hopelessness, the album provided a sense of relief and comfort to him - providing feel good moments that he did not want to end. Indeed, Infinite Moment is a much more introspective affair than previous releases, from the brooding/slow burning opener "Made Of Steel. Made Of Stone", the smoky and glacial dub techno of "Hear Your Voice" to more evocative moments as heard on "Divide Now" or the life-affirming feel of the title track - which closes the impressive release on an optimistic note.

Review: It seems that Slam boys Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle are mellowing with age. Their latest studio album - the long-serving Glaswegian duo's sixth in total - dispels with the raging rhythms and full-throttle peak-time anthems in total, instead serving up a range of cuts that all hover around the 101 BPM mark. It's a successful switch, too, with the pair mining their love of deep techno, the sci-fi fuelled melodious futurism of early Motor City techno, and the beat box-powered punch of electro. Throw in some ambient techno headiness and nods towards turn-of-the-90s IDM and you have a sparkling set that suits serious home listening much more than their previous, dancefloor-centric LPs.

Review: Soma regular SLV is the epitome of techno cool; a producer who eschews press coverage and instead just serves up regular musical missives from his East Berlin studio. "Berlin: A Portrait In Music" is the shadowy producer's second full-length outing following last year's largely club-focused "Origin of Light" on Virgo. It has a very different feel to its predecessor, with SLV offering up a series of atmospheric ambient cuts built around evocative field recordings, gentle melodies, ghostly chords, crackling aural textures and occasional delay-laden percussion hits. While there is some contemplative positivity - see the impeccable sound design of "Forest Voices" and Jonny Nash style bliss of "Mirage" - the majority of the album is surprisingly poignant and melancholic, with SLV embracing the solitude and loneliness sometimes associated with living in a major European city.

Henryk Gorecki: Symphony No 3: Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs
  1. Lento, Sostenuto Tranquillo Ma Cantabile
  2. Lento E Largo, Tranquillissimo
  3. Lento, Cantabile-Semplice
Review: Five years ago, Portishead front woman Beth Gibbons joined forces with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra to perform Henryk Gorecki's "Symphony Number 3 (Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs)" at the National Opera Grand Theatre in Warsaw. Here, the recording of the concert is finally given a release. It's a stunning suite of classical pieces, with the orchestra making short work of Gorecki's swelling movements and deeply melancholic musical motifs. Gibbons is in particularly fine form, transforming herself into an operatic artist and accurately delivers the stunning, Polish-language pieces. It's an astonishing performance and nothing like we've ever heard from her before. The 24-minute opening track is, in particular, breathtaking.
