THESIS 18 (hand-numbered 10" + MP3 download code in die-cut sleeve limited to 300 copies)
Cat: THESIS 18. Rel: 13 Jul 20
  1. Black Brunswicker, Lucy Gooch & Zake - "Wash Away" (10:07)
  2. Black Brunswicker - "On A Sunny Shore" (10:23)
Review: This is a beautiful new project from Lucy Gooch (UK), Black Brunswicker (US) and zake (US)-

Lucy Gooch's vocals become an ocean of loops and washes that float above the Black Brunswicker lap steel swells and zake drones.

Mammoth Mountain
Mammoth Mountain (limited clear vinyl 12")
Cat: SIGMMXII VI. Rel: 25 Jul 12
  1. Four Hands - "Sea Of Love" (Mammoth Mountain mix)
  2. Four Hands - "November 2011, North Northumberland" (Zoviet France dub)
  3. Four Hands - "Mountain Of Mammon" (Zoviet France version)
Review: The Newcastle based Signals collective have been delightfully unpredictable in their short existence to date, with releases from artists as varied as Legowelt, John Heckle and Oppenheimer Analysis also demonstrating an ear for quality that ensures the casual observer should always check in on their latest release. That honour falls on two local North East acts in the shape of sometime Claremont 56 artist Four Hands and iconic industrial figures Zoviet France. This clear twelve inch is the most creatively ambitious record from Signals yet, with the original material from Four Hands in essence a remix he did of "Mammoth Mountain", a track from the Manchester based artist Caro Snatch. Reimagined as a luscious ambient music with real attention paid to musicality, "Sea Of Love (Mammoth Mountain mix)" is a beautiful slice of music that can't fail to captivate across the almost eight minutes of its duration. Accompanying this, Zoviet France submitted two remixes, with the first - "November 2011, North Northumberland (Zoviet France dub)" - actually a recording of themselves playing the Four Hands version on a mobile phone while one of them chops wood. Complementing this slightly odd version is a sublime thirteen minute ambient piece that truly refigures the magic of Four Hands' original piece in Zoviet France's own inimitable style.

  6. Nadir (6:17)
Review: The latest full-length excursion from the Zake Drone label brings together imprint chief Zake and Past Inside The Present collaborator Slow Dancing Society for a first collaborative outing. Comprising six slow-motion tracks that sit somewhere between drone, academic ambient, sound design, ambient techno and neo-classical, "Mirrored" is an undeniably meditative affair capable of soothing stressed minds and warming aching limbs. There are of course distinctive highlights - see the gently throbbing deep space chords and hypnotic deep techno beats of "Mirrored", the windswept-but-warm pulse of "Anamnesis" and the contemplative late night drift of "Nadir" - but the album's greatest strength is undoubtedly how it sits together as a coherent, mood-enhancing whole.

Orchestral Tape Studies

  1. OTS1 (4:43)
  2. OTS2 (8:31)
  3. OTS3 (6:06)
  4. OTS4 (12:34)
Review: Orchestral Tape Studies is a compilation arranged and produced by healing sound propagandist, ??. OTS is a group of richly layered movements of fragmented orchestral loops, paying homage to minimalist symphonic composers and orchestras. ?? incorporates field recordings and faint drone billows to accompany these selected samples of orchestral loops. With an emphasis on tone and recurrent murmurs, these four arrangements offer 32 minutes of delicate repetition, reticent sound treatments, and subtle manipulations. OTS is intended for low-volume listening.

Coppice Movements (1-sided LP limited to 100 copies)
Cat: ZD 004. Rel: 26 May 20
  1. Cadence (5:06)
  2. Inundation (6:12)
  3. Descend (2:20)
  4. Examination Of Conscience (6:32)
  5. Wake (2:20)
Review: Created as an addendum to the 'Carolina' album, 'Coppice Movements', and the five movements comprising the EP, isn't so much a case of exploring new territories as it is a convincing display of just how much can be done within a relatively strict conceptual framework. One of the joys of drone in forms tied to ambient electronica is the deceptive sense of depth - refrains often hang on a single central tone but float, glide and flow in a manner that creates textured soundscapes on such a huge scale images of mountain tops and big country wildernesses are rarely far from the mind's eye. Zake's latest is a case in point, offering plenty of calm but complex scores primed for the self-reflective moments in time we spend considering the beauty of our world.

Carolina (transparent green vinyl LP limited to 100 copies)
Cat: PSR 46LPG. Rel: 25 Feb 20
  1. Gaffney Fields (7:37)
  2. Chesnee Rivulet (8:45)
  3. Woodland Aurora (8:48)
  4. Meadow Twilight (7:11)
Review: According to the artist himself, Zake's first solo album of 2020 was recorded and produced during "a four-day excursion in several secluded areas" in South Carolina. As a result, listeners can expect to hear babbling brooks, birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves beneath Zake's alluring mixture of enveloping ambient chords, unearthly drone tones, opaque electronics and slowly-shifting, heavily processed neo-classical movements. The results are hugely immersive and undeniably enjoyable, with each of the four tracks delivering a head-in-the-clouds journey that ripples with becalmed, atmospheric intent. In other words, it's the kind of ambient music you can get lost in. More please!

  1. Zake - "Evidence Of Things Not Seen" (27:34)
  2. Jordan Christoff - "Matriarchy" (14:54)
  3. Jordan Christoff - "Rippling" (14:27)
Review: Contemporary ambient and drone composers zake and Jordan Christoff team up for a new split release titled 'Apotheosis'. The opening track, "Evidence of Things Not Seen" by zake patiently unfolds over the course of a 27 minute slow burner. The arrangement's warm nature is both comforting and restorative. Jordan Christoff contributes two deeply emotive and engaging tracks 'Matriarchy' and 'Rippling'. Both embody a sense of intrigue and intimacy, reassuring the listener that they are not alone in whatever they are experiencing.
