  6. Acidboychair - "The End (At Any Speed)" (4:48)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Gravity Graffiti has been doing great things with its series of split 12"s already, but now the Italian label goes one better for its tenth release with this mighty double pack of heavy hitters. First up is the ever-untouchable Yoshinori Hayashi, who gets as straight up as he possibly could with the freaky house burner "Dissociative." Telephones is feeling particularly dubbed out and groovy on "Kalimbalimbo", while DB.Source and Riccardo Schiro take things strung out and textural on "Montevago". Dynamo Dreesen is in rave mode for the pepped up and delightfully weird "Reactivate", leaving the final side to Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung's chugging "Tunnel Visjon" and the rubbery side swipes of Acidboychair's "The End (At Any Speed)".

  1. Jamie XX - "Sunrise"
  2. Four Tet - "Dew"
  3. Koreless - "Horizon"
  4. John Talabot - "Aim"
Review: As part of the mandatory Record Store Day celebrations, Young Turks pull together productions from Jamie XX, Four Tet, Koreless, and John Talabot for a limited 7" release. The more attentive followers of Young Turks will know the music here originates from a commission by artists Sofi Mattioli and Rebecca Salvadori who enlisted the four to provide short compositions for their film Continuum. The two minute productions were available to download for free at the time, but Young Turks obviously felt there was an audience out there that would want the music in a more tangible, and collectible, format. Of the four, it's the rather epic "Horizon" from Koreless that hits the hardest.

Pioneers EP
  1. Johanna Knutsson & Lioness - "Oramics" (6:23)
  2. Tora Vinter & Lioness - "Delian Archives" (6:15)
  3. Fjader & Lioness - "There There Theremin" (feat Ravens'vor) (7:39)
Review: Each successive EP on Nikki Pryke AKA Lioness' Envelope Audio imprint has been a multi-artist affair, offering tracks that explore the margins of techno, electro and ambient. The label's latest EP follows this template, with Pryke playing a central role on a selection of tracks that veer towards the more slowly shifting and spacey end of the ambient spectrum. Pryke first joins forces with Johanna Knutsson on the languid, synthesizer-heavy bliss of "Oramics", before collaborating with Tora Vinter on "Delian Archives", a fine tribute to Radiophonic Workshop pioneer Delia Derbyshire rich in icy motifs and modular bleeps and glitches. Arguably best of all though is B-side "There, There, Theremin", a celestial ambient excursion crafted by Pryke and Fjader that wraps deconstructed Theremin sounds and ghostly chords around tactile, easy-going electronics.

  1. If You Listen (4:00)
  2. Tribulations (8:51)
  3. Piano Phase (16:15)
Review: What's not to love about Yann Tiersen? A French post punk wunderkind who clearly had ideas well beyond, beneath, above and to the side of bands like Throbbing Gristle, he has long-since pushed through artistic restrictions to chart territory almost completely his own. And by goodness it sounds vast.

Lagniappe Session is exactly the place he needs to be, facing down three tracks by vastly different artists, and making them entirely new by completely reimagining their elements. So that means Steve Reich's unwaveringly minimalistic 17-minute 'Piano Phase' converted into this huge, aggressive synth attack. 'If You Listen' - a 1972 acoustic folk love letter by Francoise Hardy - becomes a blissful slice of beat-less synth pop, and country gospel singer E.C. Ball takes on the appearance, aurally at least, of some ethereal goddess crying out beneath thickly textured downtempo ambience.

Cat: VV 011. Rel: 10 Mar 14
  1. Camaro Husk
  2. Cinder: Shorn
  3. Saline Flats
  4. Ragged One (reprise)
Review: Valcrond Video presents the next work by sound and image artist Luke Wyatt, Songs From Bad Kid School.

On a high desert plain, inside a cinder block compound, a prank squad is incarcerated. Between fiddling with ninja stars and leafing through back issues of Fangoria, they find time to scrape out the soundtrack of their escape.
On the first track, heatsick guitars and steel wool beats suggest a landscape strewn with abandoned car carcasses, old Camaros left for dead in the sun, used for shotgun practice.

The B-side leads off with the beat-less, articulated sprawl of "Saline Flats". Here is the story of a desert search for water: figures warping mirage-like on the horizon as they make a confused journey over dunes, ending with a cathartic drone that suggests the mirages resolving into a real oasis. Though it is just as likely that the bad kids have expired from thirst, and ascended to the sublime.

Review: Five years ago, Portishead front woman Beth Gibbons joined forces with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra to perform Henryk Gorecki's "Symphony Number 3 (Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs)" at the National Opera Grand Theatre in Warsaw. Here, the recording of the concert is finally given a release. It's a stunning suite of classical pieces, with the orchestra making short work of Gorecki's swelling movements and deeply melancholic musical motifs. Gibbons is in particularly fine form, transforming herself into an operatic artist and accurately delivers the stunning, Polish-language pieces. It's an astonishing performance and nothing like we've ever heard from her before. The 24-minute opening track is, in particular, breathtaking.

Review: A couple of years back, singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens composed the score for a dance work by choreographer Justin Peck. Entitled "The Decalogue" - which apparently means "The Ten Commandments" - the piece was debuted by the New York City Ballet in May 2017. It's taken a while, but now a recording of the solo piano piece, as performed by pianist Timo Andres, is finally available. It's split into ten parts that Stevens says, "sound like etudes in the Romantic-Modernist tradition, as if prompted by Debussy". In practice, that means some quiet and contemplative passages, some jaunty sections and a whole load of superb, fast-fingered playing by the hugely talented Andres.

Review: Since slipping out in 1983, Midori Takada's debut album, Through The Looking Glass, has become something of a sought-after item amongst ambient enthusiasts (with hugely inflated online prices to match). Happily, Palto Flats has decided to reissue it, allowing those without overblown record buying budgets to wallow in its gentle, humid majesty. Remarkably, Takada not only composed and produced it, but also played every instrument, including marimbas, recorder, vibraphone, harmonium, and all manner of things you can hit and shake. The resulting tracks remain hugely beguiling, sitting somewhere between a dreamy take on traditional Japanese music, the classic ambient albums of Brian Eno, and the gentle, sweat-soaked explorations of The Chi Factory.

Le Renard Bleu
Le Renard Bleu (1-sided etched LP)
K7
Cat: KENZ 01. Rel: 28 Aug 18
  1. Le Renard Bleu (19:54)
Review: You'll probably know Japanese percussionist Midori Takada from a recent reissue of her wonderful 1983 album, Through The Looking Glass, a piece of work that is often associated to the Balearic wave and the endlessly reinvented wheel that is ambient and drone. However, unlike many cheap imitations, Takada's music comes from the soul, or rather, from a purely spiritual point of view in terms of execution. The legendary artist is joined by Lafawndah, a young vocalist from NYC, and together they have conjured an awesome one-sider for Germany's mythical K7 imprint. "Le Renard Bleu" is a spectral voyage of gently morphing sounds, composed largely of subtle chimes and placid percussion, constantly evolving to reach a tumultuous peak of abstract sonics where Lafawndah's voice is transformed into mist. Wonderful.

Review: Earlier in the year, WRWTFWW and Palto Flats both reissued Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's brilliant 1983 debut album, Through The Looking Glass. Now WRWTFWW has gone a step further, releasing another hard-to-find touchstone of Japanese ambient: Takada's 1990 collaboration with jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh, Lunar Cruise. It's another sublime set, all told, with Takada's impeccable percussion work - both jazz-style free drumming and more melodious instruments such as marimba, kalimba and xylophone - being complemented by Satah's slick and atmospheric synthesziers. It's perhaps a little more challenging in places than Through The Looking Glass - some tracks are dense and tribal in tone, or unashamedly experimental - but rarely less than wonderfully atmospheric.

Review: Long before he became one of Japan's most revered deep house producers (see his effortlessly brilliant noughties albums on Mule Musiq for proof), Kuniyuki Takahashi produced dreamy, atmospheric ambient and new wave electronica. Up until now, much of this has remained unissued, sitting around on homemade cassettes. Happily, Music From Memory has struck a deal to release the best of the bunch, presenting them here on vinyl for the first time. It's a magical collection, all told, built around Kuniyuki's fluid and distinctive synthesizer playing, but also incorporating percussion hits created from homemade field recordings, curious samples, glistening guitar lines, dreamy vocals, occasional industrial textures and, on the standout "Signifie", crispy drum machine rhythms.

Review: Tangerine Dream's sequencer-driven work may not feel quite so groundbreaking today, although it certainly has aged incredibly well. But you should take Phaedra, the first album entry in the band's back catalogue to fully realise that idea, as proof of the fact it was. Released in 1974, it's amazingly hard to distinguish between the opening title track and the synth arpeggiation you find in techno or ambient today, setting the bar for what is to follow.

In many ways you can trace so much of the last 30 years of dance music back to this era, if not this specific album, albeit it was light years ahead of its time. Perhaps what's most remarkable, though, is that far from crude noises that have since been refined for the more mainstream electronic world, much of what's here stands up to contemporary electronica in an exploratory, genre-melding, sound-art way. Basically, it's essential.

Review: Tangerine Dream's new studio album coincides with the 50th anniversary of the band. In 2014, Original member Edgar Froese with newcomers Thorsten Quaeschning, Ulrich Schnauss and Hoshiko Yamane began to work on what was planned to be the first album of Tangerine Dream's Quantum Years. This would be a new phase and promised an updated, contemporary take on the band's trademark sound of the '70s and '80s. From sequencer driven electronica to ambient soundscapes and energetic/upbeat moments. Quantum physics and philosophy had inspired Froese to attempt a translation of these concepts into music, however he passed away in early 2015. Froese requested that his wife - Bianca (visual artist and TD's manager for the last 15 years) would ensure his vision for the project be realized. Throughout the last two years, Quaeschning, Schnauss and Yamane worked hard on achieving a result that would match Edgar's expectations - as well as the ones of TD's loyal fan base. It's worth noting that the compositions appearing on the album are not only based on theoretical concepts and ideas Edgar had outlined, but also on a large number of actual musical sketches that he luckily had already prepared during the initial phase of the band's reformation process.

Review: In the words of Ulrich Schnauss himself, "[a]rguably Tangerine Dream's live improvisations contributed just as much to the band's exceptional status as their studio releases." It's hard to disagree with his take on the legendary German electronic-rock outfit. After all, he's been a member since 2014.

The Sessions II takes this idea to the nth degree - a recording of the half century-spanning outfit, in its current iteration, playing a fully improvised live show in Hamburg in 2018. It's a mesmerising experience, as any TD show always is, calling on synth futurism, proto-shoegaze, Kraut and a ton more sub genres and micro-variations on those places where wailing guitar solos meet Vangelis-style sci-fi harmonies, taking us into more uncharted territory and elevating this above the status of standard live album. Instead, it's a moment in time trapped on record, doomed to be lost if it wasn't for this artefact.

Review: Since debuting on his own Simulacra Records imprint back in 2014, Todd Gautreau has released some seriously good ambient music as Tapes & Topographies. We attribute much of his success to a trademark style that blends fractured, heavily processed field recordings with opaque, comforting chords and melodies that are capable of winding their way into your subconscious. This trademark style once again comes to the fore on A Pulse of Durations, his first album for Past Inside The Present. Furnishing his usual fuzzy soundscapes with occasional melancholic piano motifs (see the gorgeous 'You Saw Nothing in Hiroshima'), swelling drone tones ('The Seashell & The Clergyman') and plucked strings ('The Modern Equivalent'), Gautreau delivers one of his most meditative and emotion-stirring sets to date.

Review: When Mute proposed to Yann Tiersen, a storied composer and multi-instrumentalist with a penchant for utilizing odd instruments, that they put out a career retrospective, he agreed with one condition: that he could re-record all of the tracks, many with guest performers, and include a handful of brand new tracks. "Portrait" is therefore a snapshot of his career seen through a new prism. It's a very enjoyable set and the assembled cast list - which includes such luminaries as Gruff Rhys, Stephen O'Malley and regular collaborator Olavur Jakupsson - is mighty impressive.

Review: As with the first SchleiBen series, Emotional Response follows the success of the second set of split releases with a stand-alone album by one of the highlights, in Neil Tolliday. Recorded over a 17-year period, the ambient, drone and noise pieces collected here offer a glimpse in to the depth of a supremely talented, thoughtful and at times, troubled musical mind. As his love for house music and the success of his Nail moniker grew and waned during the ascent 90s boom, there followed his somewhat surprising success as one half of Balearic-pop combo Bent, propelling Tolliday in to a world of indie-charts and endless touring. The eventual unhappiness of this 'music career' and increasing need for personal escapism led him start experiment new musical forms of expression. A thinker and oft-over drinker, success was viewed with a deep suspicion and introspection, drug use and later, depression. As his other music projects slowly imploded, this new, personal music was for many years, made purely for Tolliday's own absorption and comedowns. Taken from an initial 4 track recording in Nottingham in 2000, more pieces were subsequently recorded around the globe on numerous devices - old portable cassette recorders, hand held digital stereos and even mobile phones. These heavily manipulated samples were slowed down, reversed, smudged and stretched before analog and modular patching, Mellotron, editing, programming and post production were added to the melting pot. With hundreds of tracks collated, in the last few years Tolliday began putting them out via Bandcamp using different aliases, on made up record labels, with no press or mention to anyone. This would happen every 6-9 months - a new label was created with logo, band/artist names and a few albums worth of music, leaving it there for a few weeks before then deleting the lot. Here then is a snapshot of those recordings, chosen to represent the depth of music, while trying not to think too much about in to the emotions that were used in making them. With special hand painted artwork by Sam Purcell, commissioned from the artist's own photographs taken from a adjournment at Homerton hospital, the hope is to do justice to such wonderful music and present Neil Tolliday, finally an artist, shorn of pseudonyms, in a broader light.

Review: Tom Hang is an alias of Jimmy Asquith: head honcho of lo-fi house merchants of Lobster Theremin. 'To Be Held In A Non Position' - is a melded one-take LP that explores extended themes of isolation, loneliness, personal loss, disconnection and reconnection with reality and (self)-identity. All tracks were written and performed by Asquith, recorded live in one take at The Post Office Hotel, Melbourne in 2016. It is a fairly mixed bag of difficult listening, but not altogether unpleasant. Warped field recordings on "Tibetan Crash" and "Theme For B". Some Robin Guthrie styled drone-shoegaze on "Everything Is Ending" or "All Lost & Forgotten Woes" and even offers up a bit of power electronics just to mix things up a bit on "Open Sanctions". Told through a prism tinted with personal difficulty, it's scorched harsh extremities waft in and out of view around more subtle tones and textural elements.

Review: The Schleissen series stands as one of the finest facets of the ever expanding Emotional Response empire, initially kicking off in 2015 with releases from artists such as Harmonious Thelonious, Abul Mogard, Don't DJ and Sad City. Now the series has been fired up once again with the exotic tones of Tomaga, recently found lurking round the likes of Meakusma and Hands In The Dark. It's an exotic live band sound that touches on Fourth world exploration and motorik drive, but certainly with its own unique slant. The B side of this particular 12" is given over to Neil Tolliday, most commonly found rolling out tech house as Nail and many other names, but here indulging in gorgeous, layered minimal ambient pieces with looping melodic phrases to soothe rather than groove.

Review: Where does electronic music lead you? To the inside, to a calm and warm place where sound resonates with your body in quiet bliss, or to the outside where the rhythm wants you dance, even without moving? "WTMCT" gives an answer to these questions that is complex yet extremely easy to understand in an immediate sentient and emotive way.

Menelaos music is unusual and unlikely both with respect to the structure and arrangement of tracks, and the materiality and spatiality of the sound. And yet these sounds convey an immediate sensation of familiarity and ease, of beauty and relaxation. Menelaos utilizes loudness and extreme dynamics in a thoughtful and intriguing way to accentuate strange runaway sounds while maintaining the continuity of the flow of the tracks, which is Ambient to the core. This is a rare art in our time, where hypercompressed and superoptimized glossy sounds dominate most of Ambient, drone and even deep listening music.

In this aspect the album follows and refines the subtle production skills of seminal electronic artists like Jan Jelinek or Terre Thaemlitz a.k.a. DJ Sprinkles. What is genuinly special about Menelaos music is the natural and seemingly effortless fusion of challenging experimentalism and a warm and soothing organic sound-design. This shows exemplary in the collaborative tracks with trombonist and bass trumpet player Achim Fink, a founding figure of the Cologne jazz and free improvisation scene of the eighties. Achim is uncompromisingand in times disruptive play merges perfectly into Menelaos serene soundscapes.

This way "WTMCT" became a genuine album. It tells a story. It invites deep exploration but it does not demand it, thus transcending common notions of how Ambient or Electronica should sound. Text: Frank Eckert

The Album includes also some warm sampels (my live with the wave vol 1+ 2) from the Detroit legend Mike Huckaby to whom i very thankful.
