Review: Sahko continues to deliver new vinyl pressings of lauded, in-demand items from the bulging back catalogue of sadly departed Finnish experimentalist Mika Vaino. The latest to get the treatment is Vaino's 2008 set Oleva, his fifth solo outing under the alternative O alias. The album remains one of Vaino's most magical, in part because it counters his usual icy, creepy and sometimes intense experimental sound with ambient, IDM and rhythm-driven pieces that variously draw on electro and industrial sounds. It contains some genuinely stunning moments of both darkness and light, including a number of widescreen epics that sound like they were tailor-made for black and white, European art-house movies.

Review: Gothenburg's Alex Backman prefers to go by his birth year, 1991, and his output has been an important part of Opal Tapes' development over the last four years. The young producer prefers to deal in albums rather than singles, and his Skogen, Flickan Och Flaskan LP from 2012 is still very much one of our favourite from the OT camp. This new mini LP, No More Dreams, is a similar affair; taking the listener from the sparse yet mechanical sequence of Part 1, though to more desolate terrains as the album develops further, and ending up in a startling, hollow stratosphere of lonesome drones that give the term 'ambient' a new, more kinetic meaning. If you're looking for some drone with meaning, message and movement, then 1991 is the man for you.

Review: Now making its way to vinyl courtesy of PRS Denmark, this limited edition long player was composed by 3.11 for the 2021 edition of Strom festival in Copenhagen. The music was all played live at four different locations throughout the festival as part of a meditation and yoga series carried out by local resident Palma. As such you can imagine what to expect - sweeping synths, yang architecture, languorous chords, elastic pads and new age ambiance signifiers that soothe the soul and empty the mind of everything but sheer and utter peacefulness.

Seconds & Forever (part 1) (17:43)
Seconds & Forever (part 2) (17:54)
Review: "We stood on the edge of forever. One final dream into time. A silent voice in an empty room. The numbers; We never truly knew." By now, producer 3Six has collated an impressive amount of releases on his own self-titled imprint, and it feels like about time he was scouted by a label like Mystic & Quantum, who are making strides in their development as quality issuers of fine ambient music. "Second & Forever" comes in two parts: the A-side is mellow and soothing, the sort of music you'd feel absolutely fine leaving on in the background for hours on end, while the B-side is more involved and more acoustically demanding thanks to a delicate morphing of sinewaves and pads.

Review: Past Inside The Present has really gone to town with the re-release of this 36 album The Lower Lights: it comes in several different formats and vinyl versions with this one being a limited, numbered and opaque red vinyl including a download code. Musically it is just as essential as a collection of tracks from a year-long 'Audio Diary' project undertaken by 36 between April 2018 and April 2019. It first came back in May 2019 and soon sold out, such is the quality of the vibrant and eclectic ambient sounds within. This is not sleep-inducing background material, but rather emotionally charged soundscaping with a mix of dark, futuristic and urgent pieces all making the cut.

Review: Thanks to this lovingly presented reissue from Past Inside The Present, you can own The Lower Lights by 36 in just about whatever coloured vinyl you wish: This is the Past Inside The Present translucent red version with others also available on Juno. It's an album first put together by the label back in 2019 shortly after 36 had finished a year-long 'Audio Diary' project. Not all of the tracks they wrote in that time make the cut, but the best 10 do. They are direct, absorbing and energetic ambient soundscapes that are emotionally charged and demanding of your attention.

Review: The Lower Lights is well known as one of the most emotionally potent ambient records of recent years. It is a collection of 10 tunes from a busy period in which 36 undertook a year-long 'Audio Diary' project. The sounds are immediate and direct, demanding of your full focus and a mix of dark and urgent, cyberpunk-inspired and emotionally charged ambient sounds that bring all new thinking to the genre. Nice work.

Review: UK producer Dennis Huddleston goes by the artist name of 36. He is a much-loved producer with a fine back catalogue which is investigated here with The Box, a new collection of his earliest and perhaps most admired works. They were all written between 2005 and 2012 and are drawn from albums such as 2009's Hypersona, 2010's Hollow and 2012's Lithea. The bumper six vinyl collection also features a bonus album, Orphans, of all new and previously unreleased tracks. There is a real depth of range and emotion to these tracks so it is no wonder the artist says they are some of the most personally cherished works he has written.

Review: 'Symmetry Systems' is the new LP by Dennis Huddleston AKA 36. Inspired by Warp's 'Artificial Intelligence' releases from the early 90's, it's a melodic, synthesiser-driven record, with a wink to the past and a nod towards the future. "I have a deep love for those early Warp albums, particularly the Artificial Intelligence compilations. It was a wonderful time for UK electronic music. That beautiful, warm machine sound, with an optimistic (if somewhat naive) vision for the future. I found the whole thing incredibly inspiring and wanted to revisit those memories, albeit with a 36 twist" Like 'Wave Variations' before it, this record explores various approaches to the theme, with each track directly inspiring the next one. All tracks are sequenced in the order they were made. 'Symmetry Systems' is a collection of hypnotic machine music, made with a delicate human touch.

Review: "The Box" is a collection of the earliest and perhaps most cherished recordings by UK producer Dennis Huddleston, better known as 36. Written between 2005 and 2012, it compiles the albums Hypersona (2009), Hollow (2010) and Lithea (2012) into a 6LP boxset, alongside a bonus LP of exclusive and unreleased tracks titled Orphans. Originally written as a triptych, The Box showcases an incredibly eclectic, deeply emotional range of tracks, bridged together by that optimistic melancholy, which has since become the hallmark of the 36 sound.

Review: Of Wave Variations, British producer Dennis Huddleston aka 36 has said that ocean tides inspired his latest album for Indianapolis-based Past Inside The Present. Recalling the sense of longing and wonder when standing on a beach, while staring past the waves and into the endless horizon, he feels the album is one of the most minimal records he has ever made, as he had far less sound sources at his disposal. Huddleston intentionally created the tracks around the three minute mark, as he feels that a lot of ambient creations are unnecessarily long (we agree!) and as the label most succinctly put it 'take you straight to Elysium and then dissolve into the ether.' The moods throughout the album are quite varied, moving from sanguine, melodic affairs, into intoxicating shoegaze-ish soundscapes, haunting and introspective drones and film score-like cues.

Review: Finally back in stock after selling out in double quick time last year, British artist Dennis Huddleston's 36 project continues to capture imaginations and inspire all manner of inner journeys, with this most recent album release one of his most alluring and immersive. An epic exploration of refrains, twinkles, bleeps and echoes, the record seems to envelop and encircle you, like a veritable sonic comfort blanket.

"I feel like a lot of ambient music (including my own) is often unnecessarily long and these small vignettes work as a nice counter to that," the producer apparently said of this album, which keeps things tight at around three minutes per track. "Don't expect long build-ups or over-extended crescendos. These are short tracks that take you straight to Elysium and then dissolve into the ether." We couldn't put it better if we tried.

Review: 36's new album Reality Engine explores "the blossoming dynamics of artificial intelligence and the ever-changing definition of reality" on Past Inside The Present and does so with a continuation of his richly melodic sound while also evolving into new realms. The sheer beauty of these sounds is enough to uplift and energise, with chords ascending to the heavens on the opener 'Imagine The Truth' and then rolling out to infinite horizons on 'Axiom Haze'. 'Reality Engine' suspends you amongst the clouds and 'Beyond The Hyperreal' is a perfect marriage of immersive and organic sounds and hints of digital augmented reality engines. A sublime album, for sure.

Review: This intriguing and predictably atmospheric album is the first collaborative full-length from experienced modern ambient producer Dennis Huddleston AKA 36, and Los Angeles duo Awakened Souls, whose full-length hook-up with Pepo Galan, Palettes, received plenty of praise last year. Between them the trio have conjured up a hugely evocative and emotion-rich collection of cuts, where heart-aching, slow-motion guitar laments stretch out across swelling synthesizer chords, meditative pads, distant-sounding vocal snippets, enveloping aural textures and soft-focus piano refrains. It's a wonderfully meditative and picturesque set all told, and one that could well turn out to be one of the most essential ambient albums of 2021.

Review: American ambient label Past Inside The Present has already assured its cult status and each new release only builds on that. This time out it is Distance As Power from UK producer Dennis Huddleston aka 36 (who already released his Wave Variations album on this label this year) and prolific Japan-based sound artist Duenn who join forces for some murky and lo-fi escapism. Their five painterly tracks come on slowly and build powerfully through foggy pads, arching chords and a nostalgic sense of warmth. This is warm, widescreen and abstract bliss.

Review: 'Anon 1' was originally released as a very limited Anonymous 12" on Past Inside the Present in 2020, featuring 36 and Isaac Helsen. The idea was to let people hear the music and judge it not on the names behind it, but purely on the quality of the music itself. When it sold out, the label revealed who wrote it. Obviously quite a few 36 & Isaac Helsen fans missed out, so Past Inside the Present repressed the record, but this time with the knowledge of who made the tunes now public.

Review:  Given the respective outputs of committed ambient explorers and sound designers zake (best known for releasing no less than five fine albums in 2019) and 36 (most recently seen on A Strangely Isolated Place with the superb album "Fade To Grey"), you'd expect this trip into aural deep space to be rather good. It is of course, with the four tracks mixing echoing sonic tones and drifting sound effects with slow-burn electronic melodies and the kind of immersive, sustained chords that were once the preserve of German maestro Pete Namlook. The third track in the suite, appropriately titled 'Stage 3', is little less than stunning, in part because of its grandiose, almost classical intent. No surprise to discover, then, that after a stretch of being out of print it's back via a reissue, this version being a limited clear vinyl edition.

Review: 7FO's Ryu no Nukegara (meaning "dragon's husk") is a warm, inviting trip through ambient, dub and chill-out soundscapes. The Osaka-based producer blends sparse electronic percussion with dub-style synth bass and pentatonic melodies, while also using steel pan tones that bring an Okinawan or Southeast Asian touch. Fans of Haruomi Hosono and Equiknoxx will find much to love in this record's trans-oceanic textures with sparkling dub processing and thoughtful mixing throughout. A magical record that embodies strength, fluidity and meditative depth.

Review: Metron Records' tenth album release sees the imprint return to Japanese artist 7FO (from the likes of RVNG, Bokeh Versions and EM Records). This is his second full length on the label and it was initially created to go with a 2014 exhibition by Osaka art collective Himitsu. Now for the first time on vinyl, Music For Himitsu has been remastered to glorious effect. The show was made up by ceramicist Shiori Nishino, photographer Hiroshi Nakamura and landscape gardener Takashi Torigoe who aimed to showcase a combination of light, water and earth, which provided 7FO all the inspiration he needed to make these accompanying sounds.

Review: We do love a good back story, and Rendlesham has one of the best we've read in some time. The record is pegged as "an electronic instrumental album soundtracking arguably Britain's most remarkable UFO event", a description destined to win hearts and minds for its ability to capture the imagination while throwing in a disclaimer, in true Brit style, just in case anyone had experienced a more remarkable UFO event than the one that took place late on Christmas Day night and the early hours of Boxing Day, when an army sergeant received a binary code from a "craft of unknown origin".

Skip forward 42 years and what does that sound like? Well, imagine the introduction to a VHS release by Viacom, combined with a little Close Encounters, some Geiger counter noises, and a lot of stretched arpeggiated refrains. Then double all that and make it sound even more like a personal encounter with what may or may not have been a thing from another world. Got it? Well, that's almost what's here.

Review: Louis Johnstone is known for his mischievous and anti-art approach and here he teams up with Trilogy Tapes for Dracula Completo, an unhinged, chaotic release that defies conventional music. Operating under multiple aliases including Wanda Group and A Large Sheet of Muscle, Johnstone's work blends concrete electronics, warped samples and dark, often distorted spoken-word pieces. Dracula Completo embodies his subversive style and is a mix of absurdity, mutant poetry and rebellious energy. Though Johnstone's work challenges norms and provokes, it remains surprisingly accessible and engaging.

Review: The recent resurgence in interest in mid 1990s ambient techno has been one of the most positive trends of recent times, primarily because it has resulted in reissues of some long-forgotten and genuinely overlooked gems. A Positive Life's sophomore album Synaethetic, which was originally released by Beyond Records in 1994, falls into that category. Offering a suitably intergalactic, heady blend of undulating, psychedelic acid lines, ambient sound washes, bubbly beats, far-sighted sounds and stretched-out epics, it's an album that's as close to the original ambient techno blueprint as you're likely to find. If you love that style, it's a genuine must-have.

Atomos VII (Greenhouse re interpretation remix)
Review: Dustin O'Hallaran and Adam Wiltzie have been dealing in musique concrete for a while now, with releases on some of the most daring labels around. However, this latest work on Kranky is undoubtedly a significant step up for the outfit, with people such as Keith Fullerton Whitman having released on the label. Three extended slices of pure hedonism, each one growing and rising in emotion and momentum with each new melody. "Atmos VII" drops you into a tranquil soundscape surrounded by orchestral swirls of melodies and subtle kick drums, and "Minuet For Cheap Piano Number One" prolongs this journey through paradise thanks to some stunning keys and spine-chilling bursts of ambience. Over on the flip, the Greenhouse re-wiring of the title track is equally pensive but considerably more sinister, with an extra dosage of guitar feedback winding its way into the mix. Stunners.

Review: MIF, or Manchester International Festival, has been considered a seal of quality since its inception back in 2007. A biennial dedicated to showcasing world premieres, it's the place Damon Albarn first unveiled his epic Monkey: Journey To The West before the acclaimed spectacular went global, where Bjork presented Biophilia and the fantastic instruments she created to realise that vision, and the location of Skepta's science fiction warehouse rave, Dystopia987, among other landmark shows.

2019's edition featured Invisible Cities, a sparkling new adaptation of Italo Calvino's 1972 novel of the same name. Stars of the Lid founder Adam Wiltzie and L.A. composer Dustin O'Halloran were commissioned to score the action on stage, and now two years later their soundtrack is ready to own. At times majestic and rousing, in other moments tense and poised, but all breathtakingly beautiful contemporary classical fare, we highly recommend.

Review: LA composer Dustin O'Halloran and Stars of the Lid Adam Wiltzie are A Winged Victory for the Sullen, the cult ambient duo that has put out four acclaimed albums and performed at venues as prestigious as the Royal Albert Hall. Their self titled full length was the start of the project back in 2011 and is reissued here. It was recorded on a mix of giant gran pianos that deliver the hefty low end and are countered with he sounds of a string quartet, French horns and a bassoon. Drifting guitars wash over each tune and the whole record was processed on analogue gear and pressed to magnetic tape.

Review: Royal Academy graduate, Brian Eno, Imogen Heap, Jarvis Cocker, David Holmes and Regina Spektor collaborator, and a man who has also worked with the likes of Jon Hopkins and Paul Simon. Leo Abrahams' reputation proceeds him to say the least, and this is before we come to his film scores. With this in mind, the idea of him working with multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily - master of instruments ranging from the synthesiser to the double bass - is always going to be pretty appealing.

In every way, Visitations exceeds those expectations. Weaving a deeply immersive but nonetheless pared back sonic tapestry, this is a place where subtleties are everything and the space between the keys is as important as the notes themselves. A spectacularly sparse and unarguably effective place record that you will never tire of hearing.

The first of these, Other Channels, is a vast collection of beautifully diverse electronic patchworks, all made for TV and film. There's a bit of everything in this collection, from the oddly folky "Celebrate Michaelmas NOW", to the warped voice commercial of "Frozen Ponds PIF", and even the lo-fi growls and glitches on "Keep Warm, Keep Well". It's music for outside thinkers and lovers of the obscure, the deranged and the surreal.

After outings on labels like Take of Us's Afterlife, Feat Plates and Crosstown Rebels, he is now back on his own self-titled imprint. Again he masterfully balances the light with the dark for an album that pairs tiny melodic details with grand, sweeping pads and all consuming bass. The record includes an art inlay of the cover art by Robbie Trevino and is another fine entry into his bulging discography.

Review: Roberto Aglieri is a noted Italian flutist and composer, and his 1987 album Ragapadani stands as one of his finest achievements. Archeo Recordings are ever hip to the finest treasures hidden away in the folds of esoteric music, Italian or otherwise, and have done a great service in reissuing the album so that it might reach a wider audience. Aglieri's flute sounds haunting and evocative over the range of delicate synth treatments, largely orbiting the minimal realm but with a naive charm that makes the music wholly accessible at the same time. Soothing, thoughtfully crafted music for tender times.

Combining Ahmed's expansive guitar/synth-work and Cantu-Ledesma's immaculate style of sound design, the collection of tracks "presents as a book of short stories or vignettes highlighting their individual strengths." This version of the release comes courtesy of Cantu-Ledesm's own Devotion imprint.

Review: Danish tech house hero Samuel Andre Madsen's International Sun/Earth Explorer has been in fine form since its inception in 2016. How he finds the time between his prolific output as S.A.M. or as part of the power trio Mandar (with Lazare Hoche and Malin Genie) we'll never know but good on him! Unlike his main imprint Delaphine, he started this label as an outlet for the ambient works of himself and other artists such as Pellarin and Route. It now presents a double LP by Iranian producer in Berlin: Ahu, who has had releases on Third Ear and runs the imprint Shahr Farang. A tremendous body of work which is diverse yet cohesive; the bittersweet and evocative betaless journeys are contrasted by a handful of minimal deep house jams of the dubbier persuasion and even some lush shoegaze style moments towards the end. A highly recommended listen.

Review: Federico Albanese's Blackbirds and the Sun of October is a deeply personal album inspired by his native Monferrato in northern Italy, where it was entirely written and recorded. Returning home in autumn 2022 after years in Berlin, Albanese found creative inspiration in the region's landscapes, history and legends and he describes the album as a reflection on origins, heritage and the freedom that comes with returning home. Unlike his previous works which explored memories and imaginary worlds, this album embraces the tangible beauty of nature and history with a newfound sense of positivity and connection to his surroundings.

Review: Alberich and Lussuria are no strangers to the deep, treacherous caves of the Hospital Productions portfolio, and we couldn't think of a pair more suited to the catalogue than these two shadowy characters. Classed as ambient/drone, we think that the duo's sound travels much deeper than that and in fact, we would place this sort of material in the same bracket as noise artists like Robert Turman or Aaron Dilloway. "Continuum" is an unsettling affair, a bundle of drones moving stealthily across a landscape of solitary distortion, and both "Antechamber" and "Anti-Renaissance" do their best to increase the momentum. "Untenable" opens the B-side with a dark cloud of sonics floating in mid-air, whereas "Alabaster" drowns in its own cool, meditative wave of smoke, and "Voice Of The Dagger" enters the abyss with the help of some truly cinematic swarm of unsettling, and beautifully archaic synths.

Review: Tin Iso and the Dawn has been a four part journey from the New York based composer and puppeteer Tristan Allen. It has brought to life a whole world of fantastical characters who share "universal longings" with us mere mortals. The opening part of the fine series showcases some meticulous sound design and alluring leitmotifs that all try to make sense of loss and what comes after. The album is loosely based on Wagner's three act opera Tristan und Isolde and was written over the course of seven years from 2105 with plenty of field recordings and a mix of acoustic instruments that were processed and arranged electronically. It's a transfixing listen, for sure.

It opens with the forlorn sounds and lingering brass notes of 'The Foghorn' before a slightly more hopeful piano sequence on 'Cloud Clearing' lifts the spirits. Long sustained chords leave lasting shards one many tracks, with empty space allowing you time to get lost in deep thought. The likes of 'Shadow Diver' are more propulsive with sombre trumpets hanging heavy in the air and making this a truly emotive work.

Review: It's been six years since the last Xerrox album, but in the meantime Raster-Noton boss Carsten Nicolai has been busy dreaming up new concepts. The latest in the series is inspired by movies he watched during his childhood, which in turn led him to compose this soundtrack to an imaginary movie. It's hard to imagine Nicolai providing the backing score to a blockbuster and if anything this could be a substitute for narrative in a kids' fantasy movie. The ominous bass on "Xerrox Radieuse" sounds like the villain entering the scene, while the gentle bell tinkles of "Xerrox 2ndevol2nd" is the heroine's signature. Most impressive though are the swirling, cumulous-like synths on "Xerrox 2ndevol" and the orchestral strings of "Xerrox Helm Transphaser", which place Nicolai in the company of Vangelis.

They have been hard at it since 2022 and produced a fine body or work that mixes both of their respective backgrounds seamlessly. Review: Where to begin with this? Vrioon, quite simply, is a work overloaded with beauty. The blue, heartache solitary piano of Sakamoto bleeding into the micro-constructions and nano-beats of Carsten Nicolai's rewired machinery. "During his first live tour in Japan, Carsten Nicolai met Ryuichi Sakamoto in Tokyo. One year later Nicolai was asked to remix material from Sakamoto for the Japanese magazine Code Unfinished. "The material that was given to me was already layered with digital effects. From one little clean piano piece I made the first track. I combined those simple piano chords with a clear rhythm constellation. Somehow Ryuichi was very surprised and really liked my work. Weeks later he sent me another piece recorded specifically for this project." The result is an interweave of tracks that is quite simply breathtaking, a melange of pure cathartic piano progressions and whispering beats, a re-definition of minimalism and intellectual application into something that is quite clearly open and exposed as a spectrum of emotion and sonic loveliness. Immense.

Review: Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto's collaborative partnership reaches back to the turn of the century, when Noto was touring Japan and invited to rework some of Sakamoto's material. Since then, they've delivered a modest but important body of work via Raster-Noton and produced the soundtrack to major Hollywood film "The Revenant". In the wake of last year's "Glass" released on Noto's Noton label, this live album captures the duo in full flight at Sydney Opera House. Noto's immaculately sculpted tones and textures carve out space around Sakamoto's trademark delicate, lingering notes, resulting in an absorbing listening experience as emotionally engaging as it is technically astounding.

It was remastered last year and now gets served up as a reissue alongside three all-new pieces, namely 'City Radieuse', 'Veru 1', and 'Veru 2'. It is another classic in their oeuvre.

Review: Since its initial release back in 2008, Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto's fourth collaborative album, UTP, has become one of the pair's most celebrated full-length excursions. There's a good reason for that, too. Recorded with the Ensemble Modern string section, it presents an impeccable, atmospheric and otherworldly blend of electronic ambience, high-minded abstract experimentalism, and modern classical that benefits greatly from the presence of variations on multiple tracks - a creative decision that makes it sound like a cyclical, subtly evolving trip through minimalistic, Reichian movements. Astonishingly, this is the first time the album has ever been available on vinyl, so we'd expect copies to fly out. Pre-order now to avoid disappointment.
