Review: Widely regarded as Boards of Canada's finest hour, Music Has The Right To Children finds itself the subject of a well-deserved 2LP gatefold reissue from Warp Records. One of the most defining records of what was known for better or worse as IDM still sounds as timeless as it did in 1998, as the library tones of "Wildlife Analysis", thick downtempo rhythms of "Roygbiv" and out of focus melodies of "Olson" prove. Essential!

Review: Warp's Boards of Canada reissue campaign reaches Geogaddi, perhaps the duo's most expansive (if not their most popular) record, presented here on a 3LP gatefold edition. Considerably darker than its predecessor Music Has The Right To Children, the claustrophobic sounds of "Gyroscope" and sampled spoken word in tracks like "Dandelion" and "Energy Warning" present a somewhat dystopian setting, filled with unsettling sounds, such as the light but eerie melodies of "Alpha & Omega" and "1969". Undoubtedly one deserving of reappraisal.

Review: In recent months, PIAS has re-released numerous albums from Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, a cult post-hardcore band that found fame by developing their own distinctive brand of "doom-ridden jazz music". The latest album to get the reissue treatment is 2005's Geisterfaust. It originally appeared three years after Black Earth, a macabre and unsettling full-length that remains their most celebrated work. The five epic tracks that make up Geisterfaust are a little lighter in tone, though still thoroughly absorbing and cloaked in the band's usual hazy atmospheres. At times the music tends towards the melancholic, with 20-minute opener "Zeigefinger" offering a near perfect blend of slowly evolving ambient jazz motifs and foreboding drum hits.

Review: Ably teased by last summer's Jan Mayen EP, Seyberth and Heider's 12-year-deep organic funk project has reached a whole new level in sedative sonic luxury with their fourth LP. Deep, dubby and heavily textured, it's a cosmic adventure from the off, taking in blues, jazz, ambient, funk and dub in equal measure. Highlights include the lolloping late-night-drive beats and steady keys of "Kodiak", the harrowed alien plucks and scrapes of "Der Kran" and the enveloping Floydian sensation of bass and reverbed guitars of "SAE". A rich experience from start to finish.

Review: UK producer Matthew Bourne composed his new opus over 18 months, during a period of disillusionment. The pieces that make up the Isotach LP were recorded in between bouts at his dayjob, creating soundtrack scores and session work. These improvised, live to tape recordings became a cohesive and emotionally fulfilling body of work, however Bourne admits that he hadn't practised piano in years. He describes the practice as a 'daily communion that was once automatic and subconscious' but less frequently exercised until now. This collection of reflective and contemplative passages range from the sombre to elating, allowing his expressive performance to resonate with a beautiful sense of longing. This marks his third release for the Leeds based Leaf Recordings, following up last year's tremendous Moogmemory LP.

Review: Box clever, box fresh, box think-outside-of: Boxwork, a London basssmith who's been smouldering across house, tech and bass circles on the likes of WNCL and LNUK now antes up with a full album on "Shades". Showcasing his breadth on his widest tip yet, we're nudged and sashayed between the lines throughout... The subtle jazzy UKGisms of "Honest Loose", the thundering tribal head-twists of "Life Tour 29", the grainy vocal loops and industrial strength techy kicks of "Phant", the deep sea Dilla breaks of the "Request Line" interludes, the woozy drum loops and leftside timpani of "Ritual" and of course the serious club hitter "Portland Push", this list goes on. This is the sound of an accomplished debut album.

Review: Fresh from the release of a fine EP of braindance-influenced workouts on Analogical Force, mysterious producer Brainwaltzera delivers his second full-length excursion. This time round, the influences are a lot more horizontal in tone, as the sometime Film artist explores the blurred lines between early '90s ambient, IDM, intelligent techno, drowsy trip-hop and deep space electro. It's a heady and intoxicating brew, as inspired by contemporary takes on classic British electronica as Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin. Highlights bubble to the surface with impressive frequency, from the hazy and horizontal beauty of "Poly_Ana Summers" and Pete Namlook style "Take 1" (complete with tape hiss and cyclical, Steve Reich style melodic movements), to the crunchy, skewed beats of "Frikadel (The End Bit)".

Review: Chris Brokaw's resume over the past 25 years reads like a "who's who" of indie rock alumni. Starting as the founding member of Codeine and followed up by fronting rock mainstay Come, Brokaw has established himself as a renaissance man of songwriting. Collaborating with Liz Phair, John McEntire (Tortoise), Rhys Chatham, Evan Dando, Glenn Jones, Thurston Moore and even a brief stint with GG Allin, it is sometimes easier to list who Chris Brokaw hasn't played with rather than everyone who has crossed his path. After his time with Come, Brokaw lent his talents to bands such as Pullman, Consonant and The New Year, constantly evolving and changing his pace and rhythm.

Nowadays, Brokaw stays booked by a constant tour schedule and his duties with Dirtmusic alongside Hugo Race (of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds fame). When the dust settles in the off-season, Brokaw finds himself a more mature career path as a composer of film scores and soundtracks. Previous works for lauded independent art-house films such as I Was Born, But... and Road made Brokaw's instrumentals a familiar tone amongst the independent film community. After a slew of solo releases from labels such as 12XU, Atavistic, Brokaw's own Capitan Records and his highly praised acoustic outing on Vin Du Select Qualitite, Brokaw sat down with the award winning film "Now, Forager" to score it's lucid narrative outlining the story of two lovers joined in the unusual scenario of mushroom foraging which pushes their unstable relationship to its limits.

Limited edition of 500 vinyl copies featuring previously unreleased songs and bonus tracks not found in the film.

Review: The latest full-length exploration of "cracked electronics and irregular noise" on Milan's Haunter Records comes from Broshuda, a publicity-shy "ambient punk" and "aquatic romanticism" specialist who has been very active in the underground tape scene. Jemi is a quietly impressive affair, with Broshuda sashaying between crackly and foreboding loop jams, sound effects-peppered deep space ambient, fizzing experimental electronica, bubbly soundscapes and the kind of left-of-centre material that defies easy categorization. At times, it's curiously unsettling, while at others it's almost overwhelmingly blissful. It's this balance between dark and light moods, accompanied by inventive production, which makes the album such a rewarding listen.

Review: If there's one collaboration that we have bowed down to over the last few years, it's most certainly this new found friendship between London's Kevin Martin aka The Bug, and American doom metal guitarists, Earth. One wouldn't immediately make the connection between inner-city future-grime music and suburban stoner rock, but the two styles were in perfect unison, and this is because they're both fascinated with dark, looming clouds of bass. Whether that's through virtual synths or badass bass guitars, it doesn't matter, because the mood is mightily present. Concrete Desert is the alliance's debut LP, and it's all guns blazing from start to finish; tunes like "Snakes vs Rats" or "Metal Drone" represent exactly the sort of freshen-up that each respective act needed - on the one hand, The Bug could have done with some more external influences to the melodic constructions, while Earth needed a new framework to enter the minds of a new, European audience. We've dubbed this style 'metal drone', and we're pretty sure that it's gonna stick after you've played it out for a few minutes. A blinding collab, right here.

Review: The heavens have answered our prayers - it's the third helping of Silo Editions up on our shelves, and that means we actually get to review some good ambient this week! The enigmatic label have flown below-radar since their inception, and that is exactly what's helped them to gain more and more respect from a sub-scene so obsessed with surface appearances. That is, they've now conquered the minds of critics who actually base their judgments on music rather than frivolities. Much like the previous outing, SILO003 introduces us to a whole range of new talents, from MMY to Lea Caussat and Kapak; the one thing all these artists have in common is their utter neglect for anything grounded in sanity or predictability. Not once do we get the impression of sterility... each and every moment on here is grounded in improvisation and hedonism. Just like it should be.

Review: Since the release of critically acclaimed full-length A Step In The Dark two years ago, Brock van Wey has gone back to his DIY roots, sticking out a couple of ultra-limited, home-made sets via CD-R and digital download. Epilogues For The End of The Sky marks his return to leading Italian ambient stable Glacial Movement, and is undoubtedly one of his most consistently strong albums for some time. As you'd expect, the ambient tracks pulse and shimmer with wintery beauty, while the more drone-inclined outings are impressively atmospheric and otherworldly. As the album progresses, van Wey turns his hand to ultra-deep techno, underpinning his fluid melodic movements with the distinctive 4/4 pulse of club-focused workouts.

Review: When it comes to creating powerfully spacious, enveloping ambience, few producers can match the output of Brock van Wey. For proof, check the San Francisco native's latest full-length, the intensely beautiful - and therefore arguably oddly titled - "Heartless". It's full of tracks dominated by swirling, reverb-laden aural textures. To begin with, these sooth but seem a little cluttered. Listen carefully, though, and you start to spot all manner of subtle musical touches buried within the dreamy audio soup. First time round, we detected neo-classical orchestral movements, half-heard delay-laden vocal snatches, softly spun piano solos and all manner of attractive synthesizer sequences. It is, then, an album that genuinely rewards repeat listens. Given that it's so beautiful, that's hardly a chore.

Review: Songs Of Remembrance was originally released on Drew Piraino's Psychic Troubles Tapes out of Port Ewen, New York in 2014, but gets an essential vinyl edition thanks to the newly-formed Pre-Echo platform. These 21 short but delightful shoegaze passages unashamedly keep clipping, full of tape hiss, saturation and degradation that just add to the dreamy and sometimes violently textured aesthetics. There's some classic sounds reminiscent of The Cocteau Twins, through to Pygmalion era Slowdive where they were at their most avant garde. Some moments even have some quite gloomy and cinematic mood lighting, eighties style: at times similar to Blackest Ever Black alumni Dalhous.

Review: Those with a passion for drone textures and off-kilter ambient recordings should already be familiar with the work of Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. The New York-based Californian multi-instrumentalist has spent the last decade sauntering between labels, releasing a string of well-regarded albums in the process. On The Echoing Green is his second full-length for Mexican Summer. It sees him expertly blurring the boundaries between drone, ambient and dub techno, presenting a range of cuts that flit between clandestine moodiness, sparkling beauty and mood-enhancing bliss. Check, for example, the shoegaze-influenced brilliance of "Echoing Green" and "Tenderness", the distorted, intergalactic noise of "Vulgar Latin" and the layered field recordings of "Door To Night".

Review: Although they make vastly different forms of music from one another, we've always thought there was something similar about Jim Kirby and Aphex Twin. Granted, the latter has focussed primarily on bruising techno deviations, but both artists inject a noticeable level of irony and dark English humour into each one of their projects. Kirby's The Caretaker, for instance, is based around the theme of mental illness, and the project was initially conceived out of the famous ballroom scene from The Shining. You get the picture. Pole is the name you're probably most familiar with out of the long list of Jim Kirby monikers, but we have to say that The Caretaker has always been a secret favourite of ours. The shady producer is back on his own History Always Favours The Winners, this time with the second instalment of Everywhere At The End Of Time. That familiar ballroom vibe is still present and looming ominously, but the core of these tracks is in fact, rather joyful and optimistic. We like to think of its as ambient music from the real world. That is, Kirby injects enough air and movement from field recordings and samples to make the entirety of the release sound organic and almost alive. This is for those of you who seek something completely different. Magnificent release.

Review: Berlin via Brooklyn experimental imprint Root Strata is back with a brilliant debut by Portland, OR based trio Matt Carlson, Michael Sterling and Doug Theriault. Supposedly "derived from live improvisational performances" there's some truly gorgeous and entrancing drones which delve deep into the exotic on "Misha Bhairavi", transporting you deep into the unchartered territories of the east. The spiritual enlightenment continues on the transcendental glory of "Clouds Into Mindnight" complete with evolving pads, synth chime melodies scattered about the place and a life affirming mantra which carries away over the top. Fun fact: Sterling is a disciple of late Hindustani Master Pandit Pran Nath and a student of the great Terry Riley!

Review: Blackest Ever Black come up trumps once more with this delicious reissue of Caroline K's Now Wait For Last Year. For the uninitiated, Caroline K Walters' contributions to the minimal synth canon date back to the late '70s, forming the cult act Nocturnal Emissions with Nigel Ayers and founding Sterile Records. Along with the bounty of Nocturnal Emissions material this label issued, Sterile also dabbled in the dark arts of Lustmord, a noted influence on Kiran Sande's BEB no less! Now Wait For Last Year was originally released in 1985 and ranks as her only solo album - Walters would later pass away from leukaemia. Taking its title from a Phillip K Dick novel about time-travel enabling hallucinogenics, this reissue from BEB has been a long time coming and will positively delight anyone with an interest in the fringe electronics of the early '80s. The 21 minute A-side track, "The Happening World," sets the tone delving deep into foggy, spectral ambience with the four subsequent tracks retaining a similarly immersive mood.

Review: Michael Silver is back under his CFCF moniker with a whopping fourth album to date, and a debut appearance for the young Driftless Recordings, an imprint specializing in synth pop and nowave of all shapes and sizes. The Paper Bag label regular offers his very own brand of ambient music, a delicious and alluring blend of cosmic downtempo and playful drone. There's even a few bursts of Balearic guitar in the opener "In Praise Of Shadows", subtle flurries of watery beats in and field recordings in "Tethered In Dark", and a surprising addition of wailing vocals amid mild pads on "The Ruined Map". This is an album comprising all flavours of the electronica sphere, and a masterful one at that.
