Review: Sacha Khalife, or simply SHCAA, is a multi-talented electronic music producer from Paris. We know him well, however, namely due to an EP that cam out through NYC's Blank Slate back in 2015. Since then, he's put out one more EP through Archipel, but this is the first time we've welcomed him back onto our charts in 2017. Golconde comes through courtesy of the young Sharingtones imprint, and while this is billed as an EP, the release's 11 tracks give the impression of something much more accomplished. Fair enough, each tune is comparatively short to the usual album tracks, but the likes of "Kohinor", a bluesy, laid back slice of exotica, offer some truly deep vibes. Moreover, it's how each tune fits with the next that has got us hooked from the start, where SCHAA chucks in a subtle house blend like it's nothing, making tunes such as "Mimesis" feel like a natural course of events. On the B-side, this curious yet endlessly pleasing blend of acoustic guitars and tropical house waves continues, climaxing with a bottomless pit o minimalistic drones on "Maelstrom", followed by some glitchy IDM vibes on "Kert". Lush.

Sad Beach EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: U 09. Rel: 30 Aug 16
  1. Sailing On A Black Sea
  2. Sad Beach
  3. Through The Desert Land
  4. Seaport Theme
  5. Water Plain
Review: Uber's latest offering is a sublime 5 track ep from French producer Shelter. Sailing On A Black sea is a drifting piece of ambient electronica. Late night stargazing on the deck with the waves gently lapping on the shore. Sad Beach continues with the layered textures with a little more of a percussive feel. through the Desert Land is shimmering mesmerising journey through the dunes with loose congas soft guitars and a hypnotic Jews Harp. Seaport theme continues the coastal vibrations but with a touch of bounce and uplifting choral vocal stabs and louche pads. Finally Water Plain closes the journey with kalimbas and xylophonic melodies and the contining theme of phosphoescent seas and soothing synth sounds. A very accopmlished slice of beach bar balearica destined for sunsets around the med for years to come.

Way to Hyperborea (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TABR 042. Rel: 30 Apr 18
  1. Star Chamber Summoning (8:20)
  2. Way To Hyperborea (5:33)
  3. Shores Of The Western Sea (3:54)
  4. Wisdom Of The Stars (10:47)
Review: Hailing from the dark and mysterious world of Bunker Records, Shemale makes a welcome return after many years of silence with this fantastic release on Tabernacle. "Star Chamber Summoning" sets a powerful tone - this is ambient music that demands attention through its sheer force of presence. "Way To Hyperborea" actually taps up some kind of beat structure, but it still behaves like a wayward backroom track with its undulating bassline and gravelly, brutally submerged beat. "Shores Of The Western Sea" is all analogue soundtrack bombast of the finest B-movie kind, and "Wisdom Of The Stars" strikes a more nightmarish note in its use of discordant synth drones.

  1. Human Border (7:34)

  3. Sign Of Anxiety (6:14)
  4. Lost Souls (5:56)
Review: Silent One's ambient output via his own Intimate Silence label might, at first, sound a little too left of field for those searching for some popcorn drones. However, like a good book, this sort of output requires a little patience and little more time to properly enjoy in its fullest form. Mood and feeling are all that counts here, immersing the listener in a deep web of emotional healing that acts and feels like a meditation session, a deeply nourishing sound therapy that evolves majestically from beginning to end. Wide, visual soundscapes form the backbone to a telling story, and one which shares much of the same characteristics as legendary ambient releases by the likes of Fennesz, for imprints like Touch.

  2. Fasseleh (2:53)
  3. Skypainter (feat Erik Jahaali) (7:19)
  4. Dayi Mohsen (4:36)
Review: The Shahr Farang label is always an interesting one to check in with, sometimes veering towards fragile ambience as much as intriguing beat constructions. Here, label mainstay Sohrab invites Erik Jahaali to join in on the tough yet atmospheric thrust of "Industriegebiet", before he goes it alone on the moody beatless blanket of sound that is "Fasseleh". Jahaali is back on board for "Skypainter," which pivots around dusty pads and subtle, snaking rhythms in the deepest techno tradition. "Dayi Mohsen" is the surprise of the record, dropping into a Mo Wax style funk that should soothe all manner of chill out room scenarios.

Review: Saginaw brothers Ben and Zachary (aka Shigeto) only launched the Portage Garage Sounds imprint this year, and already they've come through with some absolute beasts! For this latest outing, Zachary Saginaw and Bill Spender come through as Spencer & Saginaw, putting Michigan firmly back on the electronic map with the headstrong "Real Talk", a tune which perhaps doesn't bang as hard as others, but that certainly has all the grove and charisma of the some of the finest Omar S tunes. There's also an instrumental cut, and the hollow landscapes of the AmbACID version of "B_W".

  3. Track 3
  4. Track 4
Review: Blundar is a label shrouded in mystery, although it seems aligned with artists like Lowtec and those orbiting crews like Smallville. The latest transmission on the dusty house imprint comes from STL, whose disheveled sounds is a natural fit for what has come before on Blundar. "Track 1" peers through a thick haze of smoke, exhaling pads and drones and keeping the bass pulsing throughout. The rest of the EP is given over to experimental and ambient tones, with the second track on Side B being an especially arresting piece loaded with melancholic contemplation. It's another strong addition to the Blundar repertoire, and another example of STL's skills and adaptability in the studio.

  2. Pendy! You're In Some Awful Danger (4:34)
  3. Find It In Your Eyes (4:31)
  4. Vampirella (3:44)
Review: In typical Music From Memory fashion, their latest archival release shines a light on one of the UK's lesser-known bands of the early 1980s. The System released a lone single in 1981, followed by a now incredibly rare debut album, Logic, in 1983. Three of the cuts here are taken from that set, including the dreamy, downbeat Balearic-pop opener "Almost Grown" - a wonderfully evocative six minutes, all told - and the far-sighted, spacey, proto-techno shuffler "Vampirella". This EP also includes one previously unreleased track, "Find It In Your Eyes", which was rescued from long-forgotten master tapes during the licensing process.

  1. Terre Thaemlitz & Robin Rimbaud - "Terre Loves Robin" (7:48)
  2. Ben Galyas - "Cloud Version" (9:42)
Review: Premature Recordings looks like it will be a magnificent label going forwards, if the EPs keep on coming in like this. For their second outing, the imprint have grouped up New York's Terre Thaemlitz aka DJ Sprinkles with the UK's Robin Rimbaud, best known as Scanner. "Terre Loves Robin" is an oddball track, a glitch, molecular experiment sitting somewhere between ambient, noise and post-classical, while newcomer Ben Galyas' "Cloud Version" unleashes a much vaster, freer stratosphere of sounds that recall the best material on mythical drone and ambient labels like London's Touch. This is a special ordeal.

  5. Patrick's Last Trip (Vernon Felicity remix)

Review: Continuing Bliq's quest to unearth the most spooky and otherworldly techno and deep house fodder out there, Thingamajicks step into the spotlight with a staggeringly confident first release that touches on a range of moods without even a hint of trepidation. "Priceless" is a slow, stark exercise in 4/4 melancholia focused on dramatic swells of chord rather than anything percussive. "Sub Rosa X" goes even further out into an immersive swarm of analogue electronics loping in a reluctant groove, the sounds swaying as though they are without an anchor, and then when you least expect it the title track takes a massive swerve towards lackadaisical guitar chords and breezy optimism.

Source (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: FRAGILE 07. Rel: 09 May 18
  1. Source (Roman Flugel mix) (9:28)
  2. Source (15:54)
Review: Acclaimed photographer and visual artist Wolfgang Tillmans seems to be devoting more of his time to music making. Source marks his second EP of the year, following the February release of Heute Will Ich Frei Sein. In its original form (featured on the flipside), "Source" is an epic piece of next level electronic experimentalism, with Tillmans wrapping his own manipulated vocal howls, yelps and other non-verbal noises in fuzzy modular synths and end-of-days electronics. This 16-minute original version comes accompanied by a naturally more dancefloor-friendly revision by Roman Flugel, who places rolling, mind-altering drum machine hits and a rumbling bassline underneath Tillmans' eccentric original elements.

Review: Trux' second EP on Berlin based record label Office is a bow to the many outstanding moments in the history of Ambient music. Allusions to Brian Eno are just as recognisable as to the charming concepts of Pop Ambient or Clicks & Cuts. It's between these poles that the four tracks on the a-side oscillate and manage to capture the listener with vibrant and diverse soundscapes. The flip side sees Trux drop a stunning melodic breakbeat tune besides remixes by Workshop's premier Techno chef Lowtec as well as a freestyle Electronica version by O$VMV$M. The much loved Super Quiet tops the record artwork off with another remarkable example of his casual and airy black and white photography.

  4. Pankow (3:55)
  5. NFL CC DUB (Mix Mup 12" bonus version) (6:37)
  6. Dewy (SW version) (7:03)
Review: The Kimochi label has been steadily releasing quality output over the last four years and they've been responsible for introducing us to a pool of new talent from the ambient corners. This latest beautifully presented 12" comes in their usual house style and comes from UD, an unknown artist who has already released one EP for the label last year. "Muy Casera" starts things off with colourful minimalism thanks to its glitchy sonics, while "Meticulous" breaks the groove and takes the beeps to an irregular tempo. "After The Cremation" is looser and more heavily focussed on cinematic pads, whereas "Pankow" takes subtle bursts of noise and places them above grey-scaled low frequencies. There's some special appearances on the B-side in the form of two remixes by Leipzig's Mix Mup and Sued's SW: the former gives his own version of "NFL CC DUB", a slow and chuggy beat burning below mild pads, whereas the latter interpretation of "Dewy" contains that classic SUED sound, a bag of rickety percussion and rich soundscapes. Don't miss it, gone before you know it.

Lifestream (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 064. Rel: 08 Oct 18
  1. Lifestream (extended mix)
  2. Rain Trek
Review: Clifford White is the kind of 80s curio that Emotional Rescue love so dearly - a bedroom keyboard warrior who happened to catapult to professional studio environs in the blink of an eye. The two tracks pressed up here previously appeared on a 1989 LP in an abridged version - White has returned to both tracks and stretched them out to enhance their playability in the dance. Both "Lifestream" and "Rain Trek" aren't your typical party starters though - rather they're lilting, uplifting synth expressions strapped to a mixable beat. That's exactly why they've been hot property on the Balearic scene for a long time, and now they're available in loud-cut, blissfully extended form for the modern heads to get dreamy to.

Review: Having only made spotted appearances in the past, icy ambient techno artist Winter In June makes a fine first outing on vinyl with a press of his formerly digi-only EP Eternal Lovers. It's prime Silent Season material, using massive slabs of reverb and a foreboding sense of space as his main weapons while rolling out bleak machine matter that sounds as though it were blown across the tundra. "About Life & Death" is particularly moving with its heart monitor bleeps and forlorn strings, while "The Party Is Elsewhere" is a telling trip into the coldest of coldwave.

Review: Icelandic techno veteran Yagya enjoys a release on X/OZ that celebrates both new and old material. The tempo is noticeably ramped up on "One Weak Light" but never at the expense of that dark and mysterious Icelandic hue. "Existence Is Weird" is no slouch either, but Yagya shapes out his atmospheres with such a refined touch that you barely notice how quick the tracks are running. "A Very Long Daydream" is a gorgeous ambient track dug out of the archives, while "Getting Closer To An Unknown Goal" sees the re-release of a track Yagya released as Rhythm Of Snow back in 1999.

After a preview 12" of "VII" out earlier this year, this full compilation contains all eleven tracks for your listening pleasure. Blissful drones, neo-classical strings and just the right amount of noise paint a rather special picture. Listen to those violins intertwine so majestically with the powerful electronic backdrops of sound. Lovely stuff.

Review: Leila Abdul Rauf releases her third studio album to date and this time it's through the legendary Black Horizons imprint, the perfect home to something as abstract and elusive as this! The label has been operating suavely since the early 00s, exclusively releasing material that goes beyond the normal confines of music, from a myriad of artists who like to travel below-radar. Diminution is a dark and complex piece of work, weaving its tenebrous drones through an endless forest of sounds. Vast soundscapes build into walls of sound only to be broken down into smaller fractions again, allowing Rauf to build a narrative and stick with it until the end.
