DUR 004 (12")
Cat: DUR 004. Rel: 31 Jul 17

  2. Track 2 (4:18)
  3. Track 3 (6:57)
  4. Track 4 (3:59)
  5. Track 5 (3:19)
  6. Track 6 (5:04)
Review: While they might have some catching up to do in terms of competing with the likes of Leipzig greats Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup, the DUR crew are certainly here to stay. Their first three releases have all been revelational, and have finally brought some new artists to the scene, so we've welcomed number 4 in the series with open arms and, importantly, open minds. Beate Furcht and Detlef Diamant both debut with these six 'dance' experiments, a curious collection of rhythmic grooves which never quite unfold into what your typical Saturday night raver would call 'club music'. In our world, that is a good thing, and it leaves plenty of room for these two newcomers to build their names from the ground up. Tracks 1 to 3 are rich in movement, and while they certainly travel across plenty of different genres and moods, all three of them lean towards the more cavernous end of the scale. On the flip, things are just as loose and hazy, with "Track 4" retaining that dubwise outlook amid its off-kilter waves, and "Track 6" providing a scintillating flow of percussive downtempo that feels right in all sorts of ways. What a release!

Colours Of The Earth EP (transparent green vinyl 12")
Cat: SRM PRO 002. Rel: 16 Oct 17
  1. Red Earth (6:27)
  2. Installation III (6:25)
  3. Winter's Moon (excerpt) (8:49)
Review: Much to the surprise of many house enthusiasts, Joe Claussel's Sacred Rhythm imprint delves into plenty of different genres and styles, all of them bound together by a recurring thread of percussive delight. Paul David Gillman debuts here, coming through with three gloriously loose slices of kinetic ambient fuzz, with the terms 'new age' and 'balearic' coming through vividly. The opening "Red Earth" is a supremely jazzy whirlpool of sonics and harmonic delight, which evaporates neatly into the much vaster planes of "Installation III". "Winter's Moon (excerpt)" washes away all the fury and energy of the previous two tracks to end up somewhere desolate and calming, offering a beautiful piece of soundscaping for the ambient fans. Recommended.

  5. Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung - "Tunnel Visjon" (5:30)
  6. Acidboychair - "The End (At Any Speed)" (4:45)
Review: Gravity Graffiti has been doing great things with its series of split 12"s already, but now the Italian label goes one better for its tenth release with this mighty double pack of heavy hitters. First up is the ever-untouchable Yoshinori Hayashi, who gets as straight up as he possibly could with the freaky house burner "Dissociative." Telephones is feeling particularly dubbed out and groovy on "Kalimbalimbo", while DB.Source and Riccardo Schiro take things strung out and textural on "Montevago". Dynamo Dreesen is in rave mode for the pepped up and delightfully weird "Reactivate", leaving the final side to Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung's chugging "Tunnel Visjon" and the rubbery side swipes of Acidboychair's "The End (At Any Speed)".

  6. Seven Transmutations (2:58)
Review: Italy's Antonio Marini last came through on Wicked Bass in 2016, and this new EP for his own On Board Music marks the artist's first release of 2017. We'd been waiting impatiently. Like he often does, Marini appears alongside and strange and wonderful blend of mystical sonics that seem to possess to tangible source and, by that, we mean that the sounds seem to have been made by Mother Earth herself. For example, the subtly acidic harmonies of "Abduction" breathe life into the rest of the sparse beat formula that surrounds them, with the following "Harmony Of The Spheres" similarly crafting a wonderful bed of organic melodies which come together into one glorious bundle of sound. On the B-side, "Alternative Currents" forms a majestic wave of improvised percussion knots and blurry cosmic rays, while "Persec City" jazzes up the mood with some very 'free' movements, and "Seven Transmutations" ties the EP to a close with a distant, opaque cocktail of classic Healing Force vibes. Wonderful stuff, as always.

  4. On Distant
Review: Junior Loves has previously been spotted alongside Scientific Dreamz Of U on the excellent The Dreamcode cassette for 1080p back in 2015, and now the spiritually charged producer is stepping out on SDOU-friendly label Tabernacle to impart some well-travelled rhythm science to all astral journeypeople. There's definitely a psyched-out drum circle vibe to "Light/New Faith," but it's shot through with foreboding that makes it all the more alluring. "Hallowed (0.E.P)" is a strafing exercise in space age arpeggios and eerie chords, and the Scientific one lends a hand on the thrumming cosmic engine of "Altar [Native States]."

Obskuur (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BNB 001. Rel: 29 Jan 18
  1. Obskuur
  2. Rumoured
Review: Kalbata is a delightfully unpredictable fellow, one minute turning out slick tech house with Guy Gerber and the next starting a dancehall riot with Warrior Queen. His long and varied career continues following a recent spot on Optimo Trax with this first 12" on Brush & Broom, a new label that is housing some particularly straight up 4/4 jams from the prolific producer. "Obskuur" has a clue in the name, plying a trade in the kind of furtive deep techno that ekes tension out of the most ambivalent of crowds with its oh-so-slow but powerful sense of progression. "Rumoured" has a broader palette, letting undulating threads of melodic synth work slither around the subby, minimal percussion.

  6. Hidden Tropic (Revisited) (3:27)
Review: The Berlin-based artist occasionally known as Opal Sunn makes his debut on Utopia with this alluring six track EP. Laced with a touching, restrained and emotional feel throughout "Olson Waters" sets the tone with its beatless framework and gently cascading arrangements while "Hidden Tropics" adds a little momentum with soft rolling beats, drifting pipes and rising chords that sound reminiscent of Reduction era Art Of Noise. "Bells Of Ukyo", "Birds Of Bahia" and "Quiet Dawn" build on the ambient thread with Foly sound and deep meditative textures while a beatless take on "Hidden Tropics" closes the show with poignancy. Stunning.

Review: Blackest Ever Black have instinctively steered towards the industrio-noise domain over the last few years, but the Young Echo crew of Bristolians Vessel - a Juno HQ favourite - El Kid and Jabu team up for a raucous excursion into deeper, bassier territories. This isn't dub music per se; it's more an introspective into the powers of the low-end...All geared up for soundsystem destruction, of course. Seriously though, these are some heavy cuts which mark both the development of a fascinating collaboration and a welcomed breath of fresh air from a label which usually only likes to breathe noxious fumes.

  1. NR 1/NR 2/NR 3/NR 4 (12:21)
  2. NR 5/NR 6/NR 7/NR 8 (13:19)
Review: The L.I.E.S. release schedule looks particularly strong this spring, with slated albums from Inhalants and Gunnar Haslam amongst the highlights. There's also the small matter of this sublime set from returning heroes KWC 92, aka Born Free's Samo DJ and Top Nice man Max Stenerudh, whose debut full-length on Ron Morelli's back in 2013 remains a highlight of the L.I.E.S. discography. This eponymous set is as atmospheric and enlightening as they come, contrasting moments of cut glass ambience, dreamy electronica and Vangelis-like soundtrack fare, with occasionally grittier cuts to puncture the head-in-the-clouds mood. It's a brilliant blend that repeatedly delivers tracks of great quality, with highlights including the heart-aching, Eastern-goes-alien wonder of "NR6", and the widescreen, deep space bliss of "NR8".

  4. Movimenti Della Luna D'Oro (Petre Inspirescu remix) (13:33)
Review: Leah Lazonick is a talented woman. A soundtrack composer, songwriter, vocalist, DJ and pianist based in Brooklyn, she has previously leant her musical skills to a handful of Sciccor & Thread label releases. Here, she finally gets a chance to release a solo EP of her own. Her classical training comes to the fore on the A-side, where she works her way through a trio of superb piano compositions, accompanied on all three occasions by a small but perfectly formed string section. On the B side, minimal techno producer Petre Inspirescu wraps elements of all three compositions - a piano motif, an extended string section there - around a tactile, hard-panned minimalist dancefloor groove, keeping the action going for a mesmerizing 13 minutes. It's naturally hugely different to Lazonick's original works, but is nevertheless rather impressive.

Review: Light of Other Days is a Zurich based record label. After great releases previously by Miajica, label boss HOVE and ETHIMM, they now present this lush EP by label co-founder Le Frere. Slow Glass is not only the debut release by him, it is also a very personal diary of the last two years of his life. All four tracks are based on recordings, samples and ideas he collected while travelling the world. With this concept in mind, he tried to catch moments of his life without stripping them of their dynamic and evanescence. Retro tinted ambient journey's for fans of labels like Antinote, rich in celestial FM synthesis and saturated VHS quality offered up here for the most part, with the exception of the lively slow burning groove of "Nttt8" which closes out the EP in style.

  4. Ukraina (Zavoloka remix)
Review: Cocktail D'Amore showed the breadth of their tastes when they reissued Ukranian composer Iury Lech's 1990 album Musica Para El Fin De Los Cantos last year. Now the label has commissioned a raft of remixes from some label regulars, with wonderful and diverse results. Powder drops her signature snaking rhythmic trysts over "Barreras", while "Cuando Rocio Dispara Sus Flechas" benefits from an abstract, ambient reworking from Suzanne Kraft. Hatchback takes to "Posmeridiano" with a delicate touch, all lingering 80s synth motifs in a beatless reverie, and Zavoloka lays the cinematic intensity on heavy with the icy strains of "Ukraina".

Review: Aside from being part of the infamous Moritz Von Oswald Trio, and collaborating extensively with audiophiles such as Ricardo Villalobos, Germany's Max Loderbauer has unfailingly crafted and nurtured his own particular strain of minimalism. Number 6 in the Marionette series feels and sounds like it should be his, following up from colleague and peer Burnt Friedman's number 5 in the series. As the title implies, Greyland is a rich, peculiar world that all-too-often steers towards the darker end of the spectrum, twisting and turning its subtle folds of tribalism with magnetic drone elements. Much like his work with the Von Oswald Trio, things move at a subtle pace here, expanding and contracting beautifully. What a stunner - this comes recommended.

  1. Second Exit (7:49)
  2. Zwei Koerper (10:47)
Review: Since 2013, Pablo Mateo has been crafting his trade and carving his signature techno sound into the underground community. We have nothing but praise for the guy, and we absolutely love his raw, improvisational style; it reminds us of artists like Barnt, artists that like to stay loose. This new EP comes courtesy of 777 Recordings sublabel FFF, and it's exactly the sort of refreshing techno cocktail that we're after these days. "Second Exit" is a dark, brooding dance floor number that is sparked into life by its fat bass tones riding beneath the percussion, and it's no doubt tune that'll be enjoyed by the UK techno audience. "Zwei Koerper" is a totally different kind of monster, a full-blown abstraction without any beats, instead using its cinematic drones to paint a vivid picture. Tip!

Review: Following up on a strong first year in the releasing game, Moire is back on Werk Discs with his messy take on analogue techno, a celebration of lo-fi charm permeating every inch of the release. "BBOY 202" leads the charge with a cloying barrage of sizzling drums, shapeless vocal loop and bloated bass, bouncing with a playful energy even as it hits hard. "False" is the more gentle offering, dropping feathery hits of percussion into fluttering loops over a wistful synth refrain. In the beguiling yet friendly atmosphere he creates, Moire has crafted a very special kind of otherworldly trip for those with adventurous ears.

Review: The first release on One Instrument saw artists like Korridor, Serena Butler and Yair Elazar Glotman demonstrating new experimental sides to their studio practice. The second release comes from Italian master Neel, who presents two distinct demonstrations of his unique touch and deep gear knowledge. The A side is a lingering ambient piece captured from the tail end of a session using the E340 Cloud Generator oscillator, while the B side focuses on the Roland SH-01A, itself an update of the iconic SH-101. The results of these two intriguing, limitation oriented excursions are as compelling as you would expect.

Review: In late 2016, Lobster Theremin launched their new sub-label: the ambient, drone and experimental electronics offshoot Lobster Sleep Sequence. After label head Jimmy Asquith came across Thet Liturgiske Owasendet's immense ambient epic "Catalina" on Soundcloud, it soon became 'a staple cure to a bout of recent prolonged sleeplessness and mild insomnia that he'd been unable to shake via any other means.' For the label's second release we have Richard Vergez's Night Foundation project, which launched in 2016. Already part of the Lobster network as graphic designer for Raw MT and Hedge Maze's releases, it wasn't long before Asquith soon came across Vergez's new project and decided to release it. Formed of three separate parts, Memory Bells is a mesmerising and evocative body of work.
