  1. Radio Weather Vending Machine (21:00)
  2. Structure & Posture (20:31)
Review: Australian Double bassist and composer Mike Majkowski is currently based in Berlin. He works as a soloist with a number of collaborative projects. According to his online profile, "his work primarily focuses on repetitive structures and their mutations, relationships between stillness and pulse, as well as the spectral qualities of resonating frequencies." His latest LP Swimming In Light comes courtesy of British (now Belgium based) label Entr'acte, who've recently presented some great works by the likes of iDEAL Recordings founder Joachim Nordwall and Antwerp based experimental techno genius Yves de Mey. On the A side are the soothing electro-acoustic drones of "Radio Weather Vending Machine" while on the flip is the haunting suspense and tension of "Structure and Posture". Majowski created both pieces using double bass, bass guitar, an analogue synthesizer, vibraphone, piano, percussion and field recordings.

Review:  Harmonious Angles was Ross Manning's debut release, and we can still remember the day back in 2012 when its free-riding blends of noise hit our digital charts; it was a breath of fresh air at a time when making gnarly noise music was still seen as a little too much for certain listeners. He's back on Australia's Room40 with another bunch of twisted pieces of brain dynamite, but his sharp brand of noise is a little more contained, a little more mature, and beautifully processed. Moreover, it's just on the right side of totally insane, something we look out for all the time. For fans of everyone from Dilloway to the Touch label.

Review: **Repress** The Music From Memory label was launched by Redlight Records founders Tako Reyenga, Abel Nagenast and Jamie Tiller earlier this year, sporting a proud mantra of "giving overlooked and unreleased music that we love a second chance". The focus of attention for Music Of Memory's second release falls on the works of celebrated ambient composer Gigi Masin. Born in Venice, Masin's work has been sampled by the likes of Bjork and To Rococco Rot and his albums attract feverish acclaim, with Wind, Masin's privately pressed debut LP a desired rarity for the only the most well-heeled of second hand collectors. It's from this album and a selection of Masin's other released works that Music From Memory draw from for this stunningly meditative double LP retrospective Talk To The Sea, which also includes a healthy amount of unreleased material.

Review: The Schleissen series goes from strength to strength on Emotional Response, inviting another two esteemed luminaries in the field of ambience to indulge themselves on a long side of wax. Matthewdavid is a welcome addition to the series - the West Coast champion has been operating in all kinds of unusual realms for a long time - and he comes to this release with a new project entitled Mindflight. The resulting track "Sonos' loops and folds heavy washes of drone and feedback in a thoroughly stimulating bath of harmony. Firecracker affiliate HOLOVR meanwhile presents three different musings on the dynamics of vintage UK techno, all crooked beat formations and luscious synth strokes gazing into the future.

  1. Portraits Of Friars

  3. Victorian Wind
  4. Passing Ship
Review: Saccharine Scores is an album/art book documenting Sean McCann's recent chamber compositions. Ranging from the 10-person ensemble performance of "Portraits of Friars" at Fylkingen, Stockholm in February 2018, to his first quartet piece "Victorian Wind", performed in Toronto in 2014. McCann's scores leak pastoral and bizarre passages, dancing in the banal beauty of sound poetry. The performances feature guest musicians Sarah Davachi, Zachary Paul, Geneva Skeen, Celia Eydeland, Maxwell August Croy, and more.

The book holds in-depth scores, program notes, and photography by McCann, a lovely complement to finger through while you lay down to listen to the disc. The notes for "Pistons" follow here: "I assembled this piece while wanting to make my life of leisure and gluttony in London somehow artistic. I was in London for a week or ten days in October 2017 for a business trip. I love London. I love doing two things at a time or more. So it worked out. I find I have a hard time enjoying anything unless I am multitasking. For example, right now as I type this description I am also drinking old coffee with ice-cubes in it, exporting a master from Pro-Tools downstairs, and watching Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985) on the television set. So in this British multitasking, I decided to work on a piece of music while indulging in food and drink roaming around London. I was also reading Baudelaire's Les Fleurs Du Mal (1857) during these outings (talk about sentimental). Some elements of those poems crept their way, drawn out of order, into Celia's singing text. As with all my compositions to this point, they are left open to interpretation: no real meaning, just flickers of settings and emotions. The taste of everything below (the score) spawned thoughts of colors and elements and people and emotions, though with the text I decided to keep it simply about the food and the beverages. The romantic music and singing is the rendering of the emotions I felt, while my banal reading was the actual act of consumption. I recorded the text while lying down in my childhood bedroom in Goleta, California, half asleep just trying to get it over with. It was a fitting situation for the piece: forced beauty."

Edition of 200, signed and numbered with 132-page 6" x 9" book.

Review: Canadian label Seance Center (run by former Invisible City Editions co-founder Brandon Hocura) presents an album by acupressure expert and electronic composer Sam McClellan. Music of the Five Elements is 'a work of perfectly tuned healing music', by way of minimalism, American primitive guitar and psychedelia. On the album, McClellan provides voice, synthesizer, guitar, bowed bass, piano, effects and Chinese flute: all played by himself. Of the album, McClellan himself stated that the optimum effect of the album is achieved if each side of the recording is played through in its entirety, without interruption. Moreover, it should be used as a meditational or body work tool, rather than entertainment, and will increase in effect over time. However, overplaying or improper use may eventually diminish its designed effect. Re-mixed and mastered from the original master reels.

Review: Astonishingly, it's been 22 years since Helge Tommervrag first donned the Mind Over MIDI alias. All these years on, he remains one of ambient music's most consistent performers, as this 19th album-length outing proves. Shorn of the usual self-indulgence that plagues the ambient genre, Soft Science boasts 14 short, spellbinding pieces that never outstay their welcome. Naturally, there are moments of gentle, drone-fuelled haziness, but also bold fusions of spacey melodies and ghostly chords, dystopian wind-scapes, bouts of intergalactic hypnotism and occasional nods towards zoned-out dub techno. As you'd expect, Tommervrag is an expert sound designer; it's this aspect that makes Soft Science such an intoxicating and mind-altering listen.

Review: Producer Henrik Kroz, who ridden under the name Miwon for the best part of his career, was an influential figure in the IDM scene of the 2000's. Although he's released a whole heap of material under the monikers of Cushion Caroms and Feedbackorchester since then, the artist's Miwon alias was last seen in a distant 2008. He's back now with a new album, Jigsawtooth, on Oakland's legendary N5MD label, famous for pioneering the Mini-Disc format back in the days. Thankfully, almost ten years of silence from Miwon haven't in any way changed the man's skills behind board; in fact, this sounds like it could be his most accomplished work yet. Through nine tracks, the artist explores all the possible angles of the enlarged IDM domain, diving deep into some pseudo house through tunes like the sublime "Spiderman", ducking out with warm glitches of lo-fi though "Pineda", and landing one warm and delicate planes such as with "Cool Your Jets". Magnetic and alluring.

Ki-Motion originally appeared on legendary Japanese imprint Better Days way back in 1981, and saw the trio lay down a range of wonderfully breezy, melodious and life-affirming tracks that joined the dots between Glass and Reich style American minimalism, Berlin school ambient, Japanese new age bliss and gentle, proto-type electronica. It's perhaps not as rare or sought-after as some Takada-related releases, but it's still a delightful album: a melodious and sun-kissed affair that sparkles just as much as her sublime solo works.

Review: Having previously reissued Mkwaju Ensemble's inspired 1981 debut "Ki-Motion", WRWTFWW now turns its attention to their equally impressive follow-up from the same year, "Mkwaju". Beginning with a breezy chunk of Marimba-driven four-to-the-floor bliss, the album sees the Japanese trio - whose members included legendary percussionist and ambient artist Midori Takada - shuffle between hypnotic, Steve Reich-influenced minimalism ("Shak Shak"), melodious fusions of new age electronica and modern American classical ("Tira-Rin"), and glacial ambient soundscapes ("Pulse In The Mind"). Best of all, though, is "Flash-Back", a dense and intoxicating percussion workout that stretches out over 13 mind-bending minutes.

Review: Greek noise explorers MMMD have a sizable body of work behind them already, having released on Pan as well as their own Antifrost label. Now the continually interesting Athens-based label Modal Analysis is releasing its first album in the shape of a live recording of Nikos Veliotis and ILIOS performing their minimalist drone experiments live in St. Paul's Anglican Church in the Greek capital. It's a subtle sound for patient ears, but listen deeply and you'll find such a rich amount of detail and expression wrought out of the duo's combination of organic instrumentation and electronics.

Review: Belgian label Stroom return with an LP by Annelies Monsere. She has been playing music solo since 2000, initially piano-based and mostly instrumental, but once she discovered her voice - vocals became a main focus. Musically, she has experimented with different instruments such as cello, guitar, xylophone and melodica. Happiness Is Within Sight is her seventh album and traverses many moods and variations: from classical to shoegaze to ambient and even organ-led church influenced music. It is an emotional and introspective album from start to finish which allows us a window into the talented artist's soul.
