Review: While Tim Hecker has a well-earned reputation for extreme electronic experimentation, he's always been capable of delivering releases shot through with intense beauty. It's this side of Hecker's output that's explored on Love Streams, his first album for three years. Effortlessly melodious, fluid, and constantly evolving, it pairs fuzzy, drone-inspired textures, melancholic atmospherics and ear-pleasing ambient melodies, with flashes of steel drums, manipulated string arrangements, and the distinctive sound of an Icelandic choir. It's a sound palette that ensures a stream of memorable, eyes-closed moments, from the Tangerine Dream inspired "Voice Crack", to the loved-up bliss of the two-part "Violet Monumental".

  10. Trade Winds, White Heat (4:35)
Review: 2003's Radio Amor has been one of our personal Tim Hecker favourites. For an artist who has released and collaborated on so much timeless ambient music, it is a bold statement. But, it is also a calculated one. The fact that it hasn't been reissued on vinyl since its original drop does have an effect, of course, but it's also one of Hecker's most pensive works, with its tunes lingering mid-air with a confidence that is rarely heard in ambient and drone these days. For instance, the sinister tension of "Spectral" reigns supreme over most other tracks of its ilk, but the majority of its quality rests in propensity to blend different emotions thanks to disparate sounds and an inhuman build up of energy. Highly recommended.

Review: Tim Hecker and Daniel Lopatin are both well known for their intricate, neo-classical drones. The former has released one of the best experimental albums of the last five years, the enchanting Ravedeath, 1972 while the latter goes by the name of Oneohtrix Point Never, an alias which has resulted in the formidable Replica LP. Both artists are meticulous experimenters of sound, and although the LP opens with the relatively gentle "Uptown Psychedelia", a winding collection of synths being disrupted by chaotic explosions, it's quickly dismantled by more apocalyptic pieces such as "Instrusions" and "GRM Blue II", where the duo carefully place the tranquillity of soft pads next to the doom of lurid feedback noises. But it's the long and continuously evolving sounds of tracks like "Racist Drones" and "Grey Geisha" that shine through most brightly, and the title track "Instrumental Tourist" is a carefully detailed mutation of timbres and atmospherics. This is the mature side of noise and drone, shifting Hecker and Lopatin into deeper, more treacherous waters but still retaining a strong musical foothold, and is exactly the sort of thing we want to see from these two great talents.

Review: John Heckle last released an album on Tabernacle three years ago, but he's been far from quiet since then with his Head Front Panel project diverting his attention towards blistering hard techno. Tone To Voice then represents a return to more melodic pastures with a more diverse selection of tempos and moods to choose from, but still Heckle's innate gift for expressive, dynamic machine music shines through. "Sonic Spectrometer" is a joyous slice of techno-jazz, while "Potential Life" whips up stunning cascading synth lines and pattering hats. At times, there's no need for a kick, and with ample ambient excursions woven into the mix this stands as one of Heckle's most accomplished releases yet.

Review: With a particularly expressive, adventurous approach to sound design and abstract composition, Luke Younger's Helm project has matured gracefully over the past seven years. He reaches his sixth album, and second for PAN, in fine fettle, matching eerie patience with studio flamboyance in a balance that few manage to successfully achieve. Olympic Mess moves from cloying hypnotism on the aptly titled "I Exist In A Fog" to unsettlingly spacious tension on "Often Destroyed", but rarely do the tracks idle for too long in one place. It's a pitfall of so much noise and drone music that Younger has side-stepped with ease on his latest effort.

Review: In early 2016, ambient soundscape artist Scott Morgan (AKA Loscil) and cellist Mark Bridges set up camp in a refurbished schoolhouse in Saratoga, Wyoming. Over the weeks that followed, they recorded an album's worth of drifting soundscapes, utilizing their own field recordings, Bridges' cello, a piano and a basic studio set up. The results, as showcased on Cinderland - their first release as High Plains - are little less than magical. Sitting somewhere between the vintage neo-classical of In The Nursery, the intricate piano compositions of Nils Frahm and the drowsy ambience of Steve Hauschildt, it's a set that wearily shuffles from wintery melancholy to mountaintop poignancy, and back again.

Review: Earlier this year, Midori Hirano joined forces with fellow Japanese producer Ytamo on the cassette-only Time Unbox, an intriguing exploration of ambient, neo-classical and music concrete. Minor Planet sees Hirano go solo once more, laying down a collection of atmospheric, otherworldly pieces that sit somewhere between contemporary classical movements, and deep space ambient. There's naturally much beauty to be found throughout, from the twinkling pianos, quiet chords and horizontal textures of "Two Kites", and the claustrophobic electronics of "Night Traveling", to the Pete Namlook style spaciousness of "Haiyuki", and the cosmic shimmer of closer "Rolling Moon".

Review: It's been seven years since Holden's debut album The Idiots Are Winning was released on his own Border Community imprint, and in that time new material has been scarce to say the least. Thankfully, The Inheritors was well worth the wait; produced with a combination of Holden's extensive analogue modular system and his own self-coded software, the album takes in influences as wide as The KLF, Elgar, ceilidh music, pentatonic folk scales and ancient pagan rituals, with each track recorded in one take with no overdubs. Border Community cohort Luke Abbott's Holkham Drones album would be the closest comparison, but even that superb record doesn't come close to the sprawling marvel that is The Inheritors, with highlights like the jazz sax of "The Caterpillar's Intervention" and twisting analogue techno of "Gone Feral" coming thick and fast.

Review: The Late Night Tales mix series - going strong since way back in 2003 - never ceases to both amaze and please our eardrums when they're in need of a sonic massage. With legendary artists such as Fatboy Slim, Jamiroquai, Groove Armada, MGMT and many others on their roster, you just know it's going to be quality throughout. This time it's up to Domino man Jon Hopkins to give us an outlook onto his own tastes and musical influences. The selection is vast and varied, with everyone from Four Tet to Darkstar and even Peter Broderick featuring within. An incandescent blend of sci-fi electronica, tropical bass nuggets and lighter shades of drone-fuelled house. Quality.

Review: Belfast label Touch Sensitive Records delivers The Host's second LP, and only his second release altogether under that alias. The Host is actually Northern Irish bass scientist Barry Lynn aka Boxcutter, a producer who has put out a vast amount of material on Planet Mu, and a string of EP's on Scuba's Hotflush Recordings, among many others. Touch Sensitive has decided to go for his more abstract work, however, and judging by their previous compilation by London's Cherrystones, these guys are into the deep end. Esalen Lectures is an album that requires patience and an open mind to allow its moody soundscapes to enter your mind. Once tracks like "Submersion" or "Primate Change" gather their momentum and rhythm, though, The Host's arrangements will stick in the back of your mind like no other contemporary drone and ambient music. From dubbed-out sonic swirls to twisted blends of drone, this is gorgeous and comes heavily recommended.

Review: A subtly appealing tape in a pink cover with an imposing artwork of highly erotic nuances: this cassette, originally promoted as "Candy-Coloured Sex-Shop Electronics", is the absolute gem of Internazionale's discography and is clearly destined to become a timeless modern classic. Together with the track "The Charnel House", included on the compilation Ny Dansk Romantik, the excellent craftsmanship of Elegy For The Victors quickly evoked the loyal admiration of listeners worldwide who were captivated by its charm. This earned the Danish artist a cult status and established him as an accomplished composer. The ambient music with an industrial flair of his earlier releases becomes organic in Elegy For The Victors and acquires life: a life depicting gorgeously melodious passages which tell a story of happy sadness or of sad happiness. Such narrative is constructed by means of a lo-fi but majestic and emotionally charged sensitivity, gentle waves of haunting loops, cinematic samples and sweet maritime sounds which will hypnotise you. This is the long-awaited remastered vinyl reissue with a new artwork which, beautifully and more appropriately, captures the melancholic essence of a masterpiece of rarefied elegance.

Review: Previously, Into The Light's releases have largely focused on obscure or overlooked Greek electronic music from the '80s and '90s. This album, though, is a little different. All of the music, which was recorded between 1995 and '97 by a then teenager called Angelo Ioakimoglu, has never previously been released. It's a remarkable collection all told, with highlights including the Vangelis style cinematic bliss of opener "Easter Theme", the smooth and silky library jazz-funk of "U220sax2", the surprisingly up-tempo (and wonderfully Greek) "Alonissos" and the Mediterranean terrace vibes of "550vortex", which sees our unknown hero join the dots between wide-eyed Balearic warmth and rolling early drum and bass.

Review: Glasgow based composer Iona Fortune presents her debut release inspired by Eastern philosophy and said to be the first in an eight album series exploring the symbols of the I Ching, Her music is influenced by oriental sounds and features a palette of instruments that includes the Guzheng, Gamelan and Synthi AKS. The overall effect is a singular and beguiling sound that loosely fits in with Jon Hassell's Fourth World concept. Fortune also contributed a track to Optimo Music's new Fourth World compilation entitled Miracle Steps earlier in 2017. The initial vinyl edition will come on a trans lucid pressing with inside sleeve and original artwork by the artist.

Review: With that excellent pair of remixes from Place No Blame's label debut last year still ringing in our heads, we've been awaiting new material from London's Japan Blues with a worrying level of anticipation. While his reworks of DJ Slyngshot's equally magnetic tunes saw the mask-ridden producer branch out onto new territories, this LP marks another significant change in his approach to releasing music. Sells His Record Collection, as with anything this man does, is an honest approach to sampling and a magnificent reflection of so many years spent digging through Japanese records. From folk dances, to soundtrack scores, and even glitchy waves of post-punk beats, this is an unmissable excursion into the most unknown territories of the music that the Far Easte Asian's island has to offer. There are few people who have taken such care, attention and dedication to bringing the listener a singular view of the country's music, and there is something in here for any serious music connoisseur's ears. Unmissable (and limited!).
