Review: Given the astounding level of productivity in the ambient scene, where many producers release a number of albums every year, the three years it's taken Steve Hauschildt to put together Where All Is Fled seems like an eternity. Clearly, it was time well spent, though, because it's a wonderfully expressive, evocative and emotion-rich set. Full of sweeping strings, Namlook-like synthesizer refrains, bubbling electronics and becalmed chords, it's 14 tracks flit between intense beauty, drifting poignancy, and horizontal dreaminess. Highlights are plentiful, from the twinkling, Nils Frahm style piano motifs of the title track, to the spacey, ambient house era pulse of "Aequus".

Review: Steve Hauschildt is no newcomer to the blossoming ambient scene, having released his first album almost a decade ago. In that time, he's earned a reputation for crafting genuinely poignant electronic music that neatly sidesteps ambient's various stylistic cliches. There's plenty to get excited about on this latest full-length - his fourth for venerable Chicago institution Kranky - starting with the sun-bright, Tangerine Dream style synthesizer arpeggios of the brilliant "Same River Twice". Elsewhere, he gets stunningly melancholic on the drifting beauty of "A False Seeming", doffs a cap to Global Communication and Steve Hillage on the glistening positivity of "Ketracel", and gives Pete Namlook a run for his money on the spacey wonder of "Strands".

Review: Since Emeralds disbanded earlier in the decade, Steve Hauschildt has impressed with a serious of largely overlooked albums on Kranky that showcased his innate ability to craft distinctly melodic music that sits somewhere between IDM, slowly shifting ambient, droning soundscapes and more ethereal home listening techno. Dissolvi, his first album for Ghostly International, could well be his most accomplished solo work to date. While it explores similar sonic territory to previous full-length releases, the set is bolder, more atmospheric and, at times, intensely beautiful. While undoubtedly fresh, those with long memories will note audible nods to ambient and deep techno greats of the early 1990s, including Jonah Sharp (Spacetime Continuum), Pete Namlook and, most obviously, Boards of Canada. In a word: timeless.

Review: Having operated close to the Ghostly International crew for some time, Loyal represents the first fully-fledged outing for Jakub Alexander's Heathered Pearls project, and it fits neatly into the narrative of the Ann Arbor electronica powerhouse. In the haunting, emotive atmospheres he creates, Alexander's music taps into the same vein of downbeat experimentation with an accessible edge that defines Ghostly. In this instance though, the cutesyness normally associated with the label is absent, replaced instead by grainy textures and an underlying ominous tone that adds a welcome weight to the LP. With beats cast aside in favour of more craftily implied rhythms, Heathered Pearls represents a captivating new step for one of the major electronic listening music labels.

Review: Last year, Astral Industries dived into the back catalogue of obscure ambient explorer Heavenly Music Corporation (AKA film and TV composer Kim Cascone) to present the first vinyl release of superb 1995 album "Lunar Phase". Here, they offer the same treatment to 1993's "In A Garden of Eden", Cascone's first solo release. It, too, is something of an overlooked classic, albeit one whose inspirations were more pastoral and natural than the stargazing Lunar Phase. The set is notable not only for its Pete Namlook-esque use of dreamy, elongated chords, but also for the presence of hyponotic, Global Communication style melodic movements and Cascone's liberal use of sound effects and field recordings, which bring to mind the KLF's legendary ambient house album, "Chill Out".

Review: "Harmony In Ultraviolet" is Tim Hecker's sixth album, Hecker's other albums appear on Alien 8, Mille Plateaux, EN/OF, and Fat Cat Records. "Harmony..." is a continuation of Hecker's interest in spectral communications, noise, impressionist musics, thresholds of listening pleasure/pain, and the limits of digital composition. This album is a significant development of his song-craft, challenging the usefulness of descriptors such as ambient, drone, metal, noise and electronic music. The New York Times has described his work as foreboding, abstract pieces in which static and sub-bass rumbles open up around slow moving notes and chords, like fissures in the earth waiting to swallow them whole.

Review: While Tim Hecker has a well-earned reputation for extreme electronic experimentation, he's always been capable of delivering releases shot through with intense beauty. It's this side of Hecker's output that's explored on Love Streams, his first album for three years. Effortlessly melodious, fluid, and constantly evolving, it pairs fuzzy, drone-inspired textures, melancholic atmospherics and ear-pleasing ambient melodies, with flashes of steel drums, manipulated string arrangements, and the distinctive sound of an Icelandic choir. It's a sound palette that ensures a stream of memorable, eyes-closed moments, from the Tangerine Dream inspired "Voice Crack", to the loved-up bliss of the two-part "Violet Monumental".

Review: 2003's Radio Amor has been one of our personal Tim Hecker favourites. For an artist who has released and collaborated on so much timeless ambient music, it is a bold statement. But, it is also a calculated one. The fact that it hasn't been reissued on vinyl since its original drop does have an effect, of course, but it's also one of Hecker's most pensive works, with its tunes lingering mid-air with a confidence that is rarely heard in ambient and drone these days. For instance, the sinister tension of "Spectral" reigns supreme over most other tracks of its ilk, but the majority of its quality rests in propensity to blend different emotions thanks to disparate sounds and an inhuman build up of energy. Highly recommended.

Review: On his last album, 2016's "Love Streams", long-serving ambient experimentalist Tim Hecker joined forces with an Icelandic choir and orchestra. This time round, he has headed East, utilizing the services of Japanese musicians and percussionists. The resultant set, "Konoyo", tips a wink to Japan's deep history in both ambient and jazz, but is far darker and dystopian in tone. It's an intriguing approach, all told, and one that allows for tracks to organically evolve, slowly shifting between fluid, otherworldly dreaminess and unsettling, paranoid creepiness. It's this interplay - not just between darkness and light, but also the experimental and the traditional - that makes "Konoyo" such a riveting and enjoyable listen.

Review: Tim Hecker and Daniel Lopatin are both well known for their intricate, neo-classical drones. The former has released one of the best experimental albums of the last five years, the enchanting Ravedeath, 1972 while the latter goes by the name of Oneohtrix Point Never, an alias which has resulted in the formidable Replica LP. Both artists are meticulous experimenters of sound, and although the LP opens with the relatively gentle "Uptown Psychedelia", a winding collection of synths being disrupted by chaotic explosions, it's quickly dismantled by more apocalyptic pieces such as "Instrusions" and "GRM Blue II", where the duo carefully place the tranquillity of soft pads next to the doom of lurid feedback noises. But it's the long and continuously evolving sounds of tracks like "Racist Drones" and "Grey Geisha" that shine through most brightly, and the title track "Instrumental Tourist" is a carefully detailed mutation of timbres and atmospherics. This is the mature side of noise and drone, shifting Hecker and Lopatin into deeper, more treacherous waters but still retaining a strong musical foothold, and is exactly the sort of thing we want to see from these two great talents.

Review: John Heckle last released an album on Tabernacle three years ago, but he's been far from quiet since then with his Head Front Panel project diverting his attention towards blistering hard techno. Tone To Voice then represents a return to more melodic pastures with a more diverse selection of tempos and moods to choose from, but still Heckle's innate gift for expressive, dynamic machine music shines through. "Sonic Spectrometer" is a joyous slice of techno-jazz, while "Potential Life" whips up stunning cascading synth lines and pattering hats. At times, there's no need for a kick, and with ample ambient excursions woven into the mix this stands as one of Heckle's most accomplished releases yet.

Review: Ambient enthusiasts have long cherished Keith Kenniff's full-length excursions under the Helios alias, but now his particular brand of quiet contemplation and musical mind massage looks set to reach a wider audience. Ghostly International has snapped up this eighth studio album, a fine set that subtly flips his usual script while retaining Kenniff's trademark languid chords, soft focus production style and yearning, slowly unfurling melodies. He says there's more focus on "texture and harmony" and less adherence to musical rules and song structures. This might be the case, but the results are every bit as alluring, poignant and spiritual as any of his previous albums.

Review: With a particularly expressive, adventurous approach to sound design and abstract composition, Luke Younger's Helm project has matured gracefully over the past seven years. He reaches his sixth album, and second for PAN, in fine fettle, matching eerie patience with studio flamboyance in a balance that few manage to successfully achieve. Olympic Mess moves from cloying hypnotism on the aptly titled "I Exist In A Fog" to unsettlingly spacious tension on "Often Destroyed", but rarely do the tracks idle for too long in one place. It's a pitfall of so much noise and drone music that Younger has side-stepped with ease on his latest effort.

Review: In early 2016, ambient soundscape artist Scott Morgan (AKA Loscil) and cellist Mark Bridges set up camp in a refurbished schoolhouse in Saratoga, Wyoming. Over the weeks that followed, they recorded an album's worth of drifting soundscapes, utilizing their own field recordings, Bridges' cello, a piano and a basic studio set up. The results, as showcased on Cinderland - their first release as High Plains - are little less than magical. Sitting somewhere between the vintage neo-classical of In The Nursery, the intricate piano compositions of Nils Frahm and the drowsy ambience of Steve Hauschildt, it's a set that wearily shuffles from wintery melancholy to mountaintop poignancy, and back again.

Review: It's been seven years since Holden's debut album The Idiots Are Winning was released on his own Border Community imprint, and in that time new material has been scarce to say the least. Thankfully, The Inheritors was well worth the wait; produced with a combination of Holden's extensive analogue modular system and his own self-coded software, the album takes in influences as wide as The KLF, Elgar, ceilidh music, pentatonic folk scales and ancient pagan rituals, with each track recorded in one take with no overdubs. Border Community cohort Luke Abbott's Holkham Drones album would be the closest comparison, but even that superb record doesn't come close to the sprawling marvel that is The Inheritors, with highlights like the jazz sax of "The Caterpillar's Intervention" and twisting analogue techno of "Gone Feral" coming thick and fast.

Review: The Late Night Tales mix series - going strong since way back in 2003 - never ceases to both amaze and please our eardrums when they're in need of a sonic massage. With legendary artists such as Fatboy Slim, Jamiroquai, Groove Armada, MGMT and many others on their roster, you just know it's going to be quality throughout. This time it's up to Domino man Jon Hopkins to give us an outlook onto his own tastes and musical influences. The selection is vast and varied, with everyone from Four Tet to Darkstar and even Peter Broderick featuring within. An incandescent blend of sci-fi electronica, tropical bass nuggets and lighter shades of drone-fuelled house. Quality.
