New For U (12" repress)
Cat: LAVIDA 001. Rel: 27 Nov 17
Deep House
  1. New For U (5:44)
  2. Drama Around The Corner (4:40)
  3. Jazz Dance (7:30)
Review: Mahogani regular Andres comes correct once again with the debut drop on his new label La Vida, with three tracks that flow with that inimitable Motor City soul. Much like previous Andres output, the triplet on New For U draw obvious lines of influence from Dilla and Dixon Jnr, though it's all sprinkled with Dez's own unique touch and style, be it the infectious snap of percussion or deft and subtle implementation of samples. The title track is a gloriously ripe combination of both those elements as thick drums intertwine with the sumptuous waves of strings and warm chiming chords, everything worked into a rhythmic template that weaves with intoxicating energy. "Drama Around The Corner" makes for one of Andres' trademark neck snapping beatdown moments and the level of percussive detail that's apparent when you concentrate is stunning and is the charming almost brief interlude to the B Side magic. Commencing with a short, looped up jazzual intro, "Jazz Dance" swiftly settles into a stripped down procession of bumping drums, low reaching double bass and swift keys - all of which are intermittently complemented by some expertly looped vocal samples. Occupying most of the B Side, it feels like the track could reach into infinity without losing any charm. Rightly the 12" of the year for us and many others.

  1. One Step Ahead (2:34)
  2. I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face (2:43)
Review: "One Step Ahead" by American soul singer Aretha Franklin was released by Columbia Records in 1965. The A-side of the single reached the Rhythm & Blues singles chart of the time and ranked at #18. On the flip, "I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face" was taken from her 1964 album entitled Runnin' Out Of Fools. The single was released two years before Aretha achieved stardom when she joined Atlantic Records. The A side cut was not included on any of her Columbia studio albums and remains one of her rarest releases. The song has risen in familiarity due to its use in recent films, such as the music documentary Muscle Shoals and in the Academy Award winning drama Moonlight directed by Barry Jenkins.

Soul
  1. Barrows Blues (2:58)
  2. High & Dry (2:21)
Review: These days, Pennsylvania-based John Wesley Dickson is an academic and classical guitarist. Back in the late '70s and early '80s, though, he spent much of his time playing in soul, funk and rhythm and blues bands. "Barrows Blues" was recorded and released in limited quantities during that period (1977 to be exact) and is a terrific example of the artist's blues-influenced blue-eyed soul-jazz sound (think Terry Callier mixed with Morrison Kincannon, and you're close). As with the original release, the brilliant title track is accompanied by mellower B-side "High & Dry". This is a more pastoral sounding song that boasts particularly hard-hitting lyrics from Wesley Dickson.

Soul
  1. Steppin' Stone (2:09)
  2. Helpless Girl (3:15)
Review: Predictably, Tramp's latest killer reissue comes from an artist that very little is known about. The sought-after "Steppin' Stone" (an original copy will set you back three figures) is little Mary Staten's only known release, and first appeared on the short-lived GME imprint sometime in the 1960s. The title track is predictably fuzzy - the kind of impassioned, on-point soul cut that Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings spent a career trying to capture. On the flip you'll find the equally impressive "Helpless Girl", a gospel-influenced, organ-rich slow jam in which Staten recounts the heartache felt after discovering the behaviour of an errant, bad-boy lover.

Funk
  1. Say Brother (edit) (3:52)
  2. Bustin' Out Of Doors (4:03)
Review: For Athens of the North's latest release, Euan Fryer has turned re-editor. The acclaimed digger has taken a scalpel to his two favourite "DJ sides" from Stark Reality's notoriously heavy catalogue. As he explains on the Athens of the North website, Fryer's version of 1968 single "Say Brother" - a psychedelic pop era funk anthem in some quarters - was inspired by a desire to get rid of the famously freaky ending, which tended to scare rather than inspire dancers. Elsewhere, his tweaks are mostly on the mastering side of things (he's made it noticeably louder without losing any of the original flavour). Over on side B Fryer delivers his snip of warm-up favourite "Busting Out of Doors", lopping off the random ending while allowing the original's trippy instrumentation room to breathe.

  1. Looking Up To You (5:21)
  2. Diamond Real (Tee Scott instrumental mix) (7:07)
Review: Probably most known as the hook sampled in Zhane's breakthrough 1993 R&B smash hit "Hey Mr. DJ", it's only in recent years that it has been recognised as being from Michael Wycoff's 1982 sleeper hit "Looking Up To You". Taken from his second album Love Conquers All, Wycoff's short lived solo career sadly hit a dead end shortly after and he apparently went through tough times. That is until getting back on his feet via a new found faith and these days he is a Minister of Music at several Los Angeles area churches. "Looking Up To You" is a timeless soul classic featuring his signature vocal style, a lush string section, an even tighter brass section and powerhouse backing vocal team: you just don't get music like this anymore! B side cut "Diamond Real" (Tee Scott instrumental mix) is a more upbeat boogie number, with P-funk style elements plus neon-lit synths and disco guitar licks - wouldn't have been out of place on the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack actually!

Review: By the time he recorded Gail, Michel Sardaby was already an established player on the European jazz scene. The Martinique-born pianist had made a string of memorable guest appearances and released two well-regarded albums before he set foot in Media Sound Studio in New York City in February '75. The resultant set, recorded with local jazz and funk musicians, has long been an in-demand record on both the jazz and jazz-funk scenes. The tracks touch on both, as well as contemporaneous modal jazz. While bassist Richard Davis and drummer Billy Hart play their part, it's Sardaby who is the real star, delivering a thrilling range of riffs and solos on piano and Fender Rhodes.

2-in/4-out, high-resolution interface for MAC, PC & iPad
Notes: Rubix24 offers a perfect balance of high-fidelity sound, solid build quality, compact size, affordable price, and crucial features for today's musicians and producers. With support for high-resolution audio up to 24-bit/192kHz, Rubix24 sounds clear and defined and is carefully engineered to have extremely low noise from input to output. Its near universal USB support means it works seamlessly with Mac and PC computers, and even supports iPads, for the ultimate in portable music production and performance.

Studio-grade sound you can take anywhere:
Nothing is more important than sound quality when it comes to audio interfaces. And you shouldn't have to sacrifice sound quality to have an affordable interface that you can take with you. Rubix24 sounds clean and detailed with transparent, low noise mic preamps and supports audio resolutions up 24-bit/192kHz. It's made of durable metal, and a lot went into its compact, low-noise design. With all the places Rubix24 can go, you'll appreciate its extensive shielding and ground lifts, making sure you get good clean audio just about anywhere.

2 high quality mic preamps and 4 separate outputs:
Rubix24's dual microphone preamps are designed for low noise and high definition. They sound clean and transparent with plenty of headroom for capturing all the impact and detail of whatever you're recording. And the flexible combo jacks mean you can easily connect a wide variety of sources without the need for adapters or special cables. Four individual outputs mean you can create more sophisticated routing and monitoring setups. This is useful for sending a click track to a performer, setting up a stage monitor, or routing audio to external gear.

Hardware compressor/limiter:
Highly dynamic sources like vocalists and percussion instruments often need taming, especially when recording on location. Dynamics processors help ensure a good hot signal without clipping and causing unwanted distortion. Rubix24's built-on compressor/limiter provides peace of mind in the heat of a recording session.

Big, clear level indicators:
Studios and stages can be dark places, and getting proper levels is critical. You want to focus on the performance, not on small, hard-to-see clip and level indicators from across the room. Rubix24 has highly visible indicators that are an integral part of its design. They clearly show if a channel has incoming signal, or if you're going to overload, even from a distance.

Built for Mac, PC and iPad:
Rubix24 is ultra-portable and ultra-flexible. It has low latency class compliant drivers for Mac and PC, so it's simple to get up and running with smooth, reliable audio performance. And it also supports iPad giving you an extremely compact system for on-location recording, on-the-go production, or live performance. It even includes Ableton Live Lite, powerful studio production and live performance software that works perfectly with Rubix24, right out of the box.

  4. Majid (Nico Stojan remix) (7:04)
Review: As you'd probably expect, Ouie has done a good job selecting remixers to work their magic on tracks from Acid Pauli's recent sophomore album, BLD. We were initially drawn to Red Axes' superb take on "Ayam", which oozes psychedelic, head-turning intent (much like the Israeli duo's original productions, in fact) and thrilling changes direction a number of times whilst retaining a heavy, dub-inspired groove. There's no doubt this remix stands out, but there are also impressive turns from Nico Stojan, whose gently unfurling version of "Majid" achieves a fine balance between club-ready punch and head-in-the-clouds attractiveness, and hypnotic tech-house/deep house fusionist Sainte Vie.

Soul
  1. Malik (Difusion edit) (4:52)
  2. A Fool No Longer (4:56)
Review: Cordial has done a deal with short-lived jazz-funk combo Afrodisia to reissue their sought-after album, 1980's Elephant Sunrise, in 2018, with an album of previously unreleased recordings to follow. To whet our appetite, they've decided to release the never-before-heard "Malik", a brilliant chunk of jazz-funk/jazz-rock fusion that would have got jazz dancers hot under the collar had it appeared when it was originally recorded way back in 1982. On the B-side you'll find the similarly minded "A Fool No Longer", a dancefloor-focused chunk of blue-eyed soul that has previously only been available on obscure 1981 compilation album Rock Aus Der Alten Schule. Brilliant stuff all told.

Deep House
  1. Stay (8:18)
  2. Venus Requiem (5:56)
Review: Having previously impressed on Argot and Home Taping Is Killing Music with her blends of evocative deep house and floor-friendly Chicago rhythms, The Black Madonna tries a different approach on this debut for the recently launched Night Owl Diner label. You could certainly describe both tracks as "Balearic", and there's a real air of wide-eyed positivity about the tumbling melodies, swirling synth-strings and mid-80s pop production of head-nodding deep house cut "Stay". It's pretty darn tasty, all told. Almost as good is "Requiem", which appears to be built around a loop lifted from Cherrelle and Alexander O'Neal's "Saturday Love" (with, of course, additional synths and tuneful electronics).

  2. What Iz Deep House (6:43)
  3. Sand (7:00)
  4. Sand (Frank & Tony Breakaway dub) (6:41)
Review: Fresh from inspired outings on Freerange, Monologues and Axe on Wax, Greg Stewart brings his DJ Aakmael project to Scissor & Thread. He sets his stall out via opener "Take It Back", a wonderfully loose, relaxed and sepia-tinted deep house cut that simply oozes melodious warmth from start to finish. Stewart showcases his knowledge of vintage New Jersey deep house on "What Iz Deep House", where pitched-down spoken word samples and jazzy riffs work in unison with a snappy drum machine groove, before opting for a classic Frankie Knuckles sound on the tactile and piano-heavy "Sand". Frank and Tony are on hand to remix the latter, delivering a stripped-back and bass-heavy dub that's every bit as alluring as Stewart's original version.

  2. Deniro - "Serval" (7:57)
  3. Matrixxman - "Sexual Frustration" (6:06)
  4. Talismann - "Aciano" (7:29)
Review: The eighth instalment in Dutch powerhouse Dekmantel's 10 year anniversary series comes courtesy of the techno scene's current heavy hitters. On the A side we have inimitable pairing of some hypnotic techno dons: Rome's Donato Dozzy and Brussels' Peter Van Hoesen - who turn in an epic tribal trance cut in the form of "Storta". The Trip affiliated Dutchman Deniro finishes up the A side with his deep and functional DJ tool "Serval" powered by thunderous toms and distant blips and bleeps. On the flip, American acid retrovert Matrixxman delivers more sturdy 303 wobble business for dank warehouses on "Sexual Frustration" and grunting and squealing away in similar fashion is Talismann's dirty epic "Aciano". With an EP released every month, the series has been embracing all the musical varieties they've come to represent. Featuring label favourites, along with a whole bunch of new faces, iconic artists and select debutantes alike - it's a collection of timeless music that embraces everything they've done to date, while setting a precedent for things to come.
