That's Right (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: RF 001. Rel: 23 Oct 17
  1. That's Right (6:28)
  2. ADSR (5:07)
Review: There's more than an element of mystery about this hand-stamped 12" from the previously unheard Rogue Filter, which according to the sparse accompanying info sheet is a producer who has "been in the scene for nearly three decades", is "allied with many faces" and "wears many hats". Whoever is responsible, the two cuts on offer sound like the product of a youth spent break-dancing on Saturday afternoons outside a shopping centre in the 1980s. On the A-side you'll find "That's Right", a bustling chunk of B-boy electro blessed with short, cut-up vocal snippets, aquatic electronics and suitably body-popping beats. Flip to the B-side for "ADSR", a harder-edged, 808-heavy electro roller full of cascading deep space chords, surging analogue bass and fuzzy vocoder vocals.

  1. Romar - "Clouds" (11:26)
  2. Takashi Himeoka - "Oceans" (8:42)
Review: There's something pleasingly dewy-eyed about the latest release from the Saga label, which sees Romar and Takesh Himeoka each serve up hazy and melodious workouts seemingly inspired by nature. Romar's "Clouds" is a pleasingly deep, drifting and melodious affair, with gently positive chord progressions, bubbly acid lines and hybrid electro/techno beats creating a sumptuously loved-up mood. In contrast, Takesh Himeoka's "Oceans" is as deep and picturesque as the Pacific, with a rolling, two-step style groove underpinning Mr YT style pads and becalmed electric piano motifs. Musically, it offers a near perfect sonic summary of a great ocean on a gentle day; it may get stormy at some point, but not while Himeoka is at the controls.

  2. El Juancho (5:46)
  3. No Quiero Nada Contigo (4:31)
Review: Since first popping up on Comeme in 2012, Barcelona-based Colombian Sebastian "Sano" Hoyos has been responsible for a smattering of superb EPs and a sole bustling full-length. This is his second outing on the eccentric Public Possession imprint and sees him deliver a trio of quirky cuts that mix vocals and rhythms from his home country (re-played on battered drum machines) with synthesizer sounds from the 1980s. This blend is most potent on cheery, tropical synth-pop A-side "El Tecnopop", but can also be heard on "El Juancho", where non-stop vocals, darting acid synths and foreboding bass ride a layered, tribal drum groove. Also impressive is closer "No Quiero Nada Contigo", a drum-machine driven cumbia outing that makes great use of sampled scratches and weird electronics.

  2. Nathaniel - "Blood Under Nails" (5:05)
  3. Nathaniel - "Lolita" (5:26)
  4. Nathaniel - "Dolores Haze" (4:58)
Review: Persephonic Sirens started off with a bang earlier this year, landing on our shelves with a mind-bending EP from the dread Ancient Methods corner. The imprint is now back with two newcomers, both adept at making the same sort of tenebrous dance gear and, by the sounds of four tunes, absolutely up for the killing! Sharplines' only tune on here, "Out Of Control", bursts through the speakers like a round of AK bullets on speed, buzzing with each new loop, while "Blood Under Nails" from Nathaniel is a comparatively more broken affair. On the flip, "Lolita" is an EBM-leaning slice of industrial tech-funk, followed by the similarly off-kilter, machine-drum psych-pop of the curiously formed "Dolores Haze". Banging material from this young powerhouse!

  3. Pearl Divers (Matt Star remix) (6:32)
Review: Ark to Ashes is a record label conceived in Brooklyn and realized in Abu Dhabi. It was founded in 2013 by Shadi Megallaa. Following up releases by homeboys Taimur & Fahad (Blkmarket NYC), Leftback alumni Michael McLardy & Dudley Strangeways plus himself, it's now over to Silverlining aka the legendary UK producer Asad Rizvi. This particular project was revived after a long hiatus in 2016 and this will be the first release outside of the recently kickstarted Silverlining Dubs imprint. Starting off with the slinky and boompty minimal house groove of "Pearl Diving", on the flip it then dives even deeper with an atmospheric and texturised dub techno excursion that is Christian Rindermann aka Stardub's remix. Frankfurt's Matt Star has been around a while, but really found his sound in recent years. His remix similarly stays on the dubby tip, but with more groove and some immaculate rhythm programming.

  1. Cut This Way
  2. Lost Someone
Review: Smashed Atoms make a return after launching the Magic Circles label earlier in the year, bringing more of that sassy disco flavoured house music with a fondness for the good old way of doing things. The nods to "Rapture" are hard to ignore on "Cut This Way" even if the ingredients are fresh, and there's no denying it's the perfect formula for an addictive dancefloor cut with an old-skool hip hop monologue over the top. "Lost Someone" is a more sprightly affair that plays off bouncy synth lines and another discoid drum groove to create its infectious good time message.

Review: Disco Fruit's sublabel continues to turn out smooth and slick deep, funky house, and this time around Tonbe is on hand with the goods to get the people grooving. "Broken Heart" features Rachel on vocals and some sweet saxophone, hitting the spot just right for universally appealing house music. "Street Groove" is a more forthright, clubby affair where the drums take the lead and the keys lock into a loopy late night roll. "Feel So Good" features some more choice vocal turns with urgent melodic hooks, and then "Something Jazzy" swoops in at the end with some proper New Jersey heat to get your body popping.

Review: The unstoppable New Zealand duo continue their deep, dark and dangerous adventures with a return to Deep Medi Music and three outstanding slabs of authentic dub weight; "Lion" roars with serious bass weight and the textured downpitched tones of long-standing collaborator Taso, "Messages" rolls with poignant subdued chords and a measured, pensive air while "Ruffneck" rumbles with a sub/kick combo so woozy it needs breathalysing if it's within 10 metres of a vehicle. The lion awakes once more.

  3. Narkoministeren (10:52)
Review: Rising from the airwaves in a tangible label reality; Nos Classics launches with main man Uffe who lays down three introspective, immersive grooves. "Surprisingly" sounds similar to the worlds you might find shared between Dominick Martin and Andrew Ashong with its low-toned narrative and spiralling instrumentation, "Lotte's Hippie-House" is the ebb and flow of hope flickering over a light percussive weave while "Narkoministeren" takes over the B for a wild 11 minute excursion that's heavy on the percussion and mystic detours. Stunning.

Review: We'll be first to admit that the description 'neon-lit' gets bandied about a fair bit around here, but good lord we haven't heard anything this much like it: it's almost fluorescent! Following up their 'enigmatic middle eastern funk bonanza' (with Anony & Mous' The Nile Files), Fossils return with a new EP from Tel Aviv via NYC's UV & Nen, who reveal what the label describes as 'long forgotten.. disco funk nuggets that are bound to become classics in their own right.' Starting off on the A side with "The Bump" which is a funky and lo-slung chugger with sleazy disco elements: just the way we like it. On the flip, "Love Makin" is where things get epically psychedelic, seasoned with sexy moans and 'abnormal synth activities' while "Beatcoin" is a steady slow stomper that will get booties shaken (and shaking) across the dance floor.

  4. Gilb'r - "The Triangle" (5:52)
Review: Dekmantel's 10th anniversary series of 12" singles continues to deliver far more hits than misses. Happily, there are plenty more on this seventh volume. Chief amongst them is Randomer's brilliant "Foghorn", a thrillingly trippy and floor-friendly fusion of snappy, lapsed techno breakbeats, horror movie chords and clandestine electronics. That's not to say there aren't fine moments elsewhere, of course. Props to Versatile Records man Gilb'r for continuing his obsession with humid rainforest textures, trippy chords and wonky African percussion on "The Triangle", and to Tolouse Low Trax for the skewed Balearic synth-pop shuffle that is "Crash". Vosiki's clattering but poignant analogue opener "Time As A River" is pretty tasty, too.

Review: Vancouver based producer Woodhead has appeared previously on Editorial, Royal Soul and Homebreakin' in addition to local imprint East Van Audio. Now he serves up his new offering, entitled Deeper Than Love which features some truly tasty edits. The classic vibe of "Be With You" will be familiar to some in all its dazzling '70s style glory: you know the name of this one right? There's Rhodes galore of the deep and hypnotic late night jam "I Love You" which again is spliced to perfection. On the flip, witness those amazing synth riffs beneath that epic filter sweep action on "Love So Fine" which is absolutely looped for pleasure. Finishing up these respectful edits is one more ergonomic disco tool (for DJ use only) on the feelgood and funky "Whenever You're Around".
