Review: Dublin based Major Problems is helmed by major retrovert and deep digger Compassion Crew; whose Compassion Cuts unearths more dormant classics for a well needed revival. He gave bleep techno anthem "Pressure Dub" by Ability II a well needed re-rub and now turns his deft hand at 2BMW 's 1990 classic "Don't Tell Me" (How Love Should Feel) by one Larry Rauson of Luxury Productions (The New Crew) fame. This was the one and only release on Life Of Luxury. Rauson is a founding member and producer for the independent label New Generation Records and has recorded with Tony Humphries and Louie Vega over the years. This deep and bittersweet jam is one of those perfect examples of the early '90s house zeitgeist by this underrated New Jersey producer. Also features "Love Dub" (Compassion Crew Re-rub) a lo-slung and bumpin DJ tool, in addition to Larry's Luxury mix of the same track featuring some truly sexy sax stylings.

Review: 2DeepSoul are the core crew behind Inner Shift music, so as you might expect they've got a keen instinct for the finest strains of pure deep house as you'd happily dig from the likes of Patrice Scott or Fred P. They open up the Windows EP with the dreamy haze of "Clarity" before "Contour Lines" brings a pulsing, techy lead into the mixture of sweeping pads and snappy beats. "Someday" is a rich, harmonious ambient excursion, and then "It's A Sign" finishes the EP off with a truly meditative trip for the smoothest deep house cruisers to lock onto.

Review: German imprint Quintessentials' mission statement is to keep underground house music on the map. It claims to hold a candle to those old house records: they love that raw yet soulful vibe. For their 56th (!) release they have tapped Mexican producer 4004, who has had releases also of late on FACES, Poetry In Motion and Late Night Jackin'. Smoky late night groove "No Dreams" gets things off to a good start with its smooth Rhodes, bumpy bassline and hypnotic bongo action. We particularly enjoyed the pumping NYC basement vibe of B side cut "Fanta Club" while "Black Alley Shuffle" gets back to the program in sexy and dusky fashion complete with some dusty rhythms, diva vocals and further mood lighting with the impressive use of filter sweeps.

Review: New label Tell Zero Records hits the ground running with a 10" ambient white label that really impresses. There is some lush, slow motion tribalism on the A side that dives deep into the exotic. On the flip, the second beatless journey features some sombre and evocative Olafur Arnalds style piano playing over some haunting field recordings assembled into a captivating collage.

  1. A Houseband - "Another Love Another Happiness"
  2. Russian Hackers - "303"
Review: Smile & Wave appears from out of nowhere with two unknown names heading up the first release. There's no indication of who is behind A Houseband or Russian Hackers, but both of them have done a damn fine job of bringing two sure fire killers to wax. The first is "Another Love Another Happiness", which as the title candidly suggests is yet another version of the oft-sampled "Love & Happiness", this time framed in a bubbling, dubby deep house context for the mellow heads to soak up. By way of contrast Russian Hackers get busy with "303", bringing some forthright jack to the table.

  1. Stingray (5:25)
  2. Burning Crystal (6:39)
  3. An Infinite Number Of Possibilities (5:40)
  4. 720 Degrees (5:55)
Review: Since 2011, or what we could describe as the rebirth of vintage electronic music and the muddled, increasingly convoluted evolution of 'bass' music, Nick Harris aka A Sagittariun has been providing our charts, and the wider scene, with consistently high levels future-proof techno. Slightly Ajar is his third release of 2017 already, and it comes through on his own Elastic Dreams imprint with a squadron of deep and effortlessly mesmerizing electronic shapes. "Stingray" opens with an ocean of euphoric pads and industrial rhythms coming together as one, and is followed elegantly by the much deeper, more reflective broken patterns of "Burning Crystal". On the B-side, "An Infinite Number Of Possibilities" kicks the gears into motion with a much bouncier, club-centric techno groove filled with surreal melodies, and "720 Degrees" buries a load of bleeps into a hypnotic bundle of sci-fi sonics for total dancefloor domination. Effective and ultra-sleek - the lot of them!

Techno
  1. Pseudo Science (6:03)
  2. Heavy Manners (8:24)
Review: Nick Harris aka A Sagittariun lands on Bristol's Idle Hands with a smacking two-tracker for the techno puritans! Fair enough, the flow and structure of "Pseudo Science" might not be typically classed as traditional techno, but there is so much freedom in its half-step beats and circular percussion shots, making this a beautiful relic of the sort of dance music that was being made just before the rise of 'minimal'. On the B-side, "Heavy Manners" is slower to pick up pace, kicking off with a frosty, barren procession of hi-hats and mild beats, both giving way to the much more powerful swing of the pads and harmonies in the backdrop. Excellent.

Review: Remix klaxon! Addison Groove unleashes "Shango" from this summer's heavily played "Changa" EP and passes it round his mates for a cheeky buzz. The results include a harmonic Julian Jabre-style tech house riff from Ejeca, a sub-aquatic bubble-n-bleep stepper from O'Flynn, a woozy slo-mo broken beat affair from Nan Kole and a pounding operator-style 4x4 dub shakedown from Professor Amit. Subp Yao takes the closing honours with a spaced-out beat jam that sits somewhere between IG Culture and Roska. Shango-a-gogo.

Review: Clean Slate is the first release from Addremove on Swiss label Threnes. Addremove is an electronic music project with a unique approach. The sound of this production is lush, minimal and dark, echoing influences as diverse as ambient music, experimental electronica and darkwave. The EP features six tracks with eerie and industrial overtones, including opening number "Letter From Police" with its drones and industrial percussion backed by mesmerising textures. "Lurk" is certainly one of the most striking tracks on this release, where the bass synth creates an all-embracing sonic landscape, while a sudden burst of glitchy beats breaks the pattern unexpectedly. The remixed version of "Crie" is pitch black and austere, with the legendary Justin Broaderick adding jackhammer beats and grindcore guitars and 'going for a powerful and uncompromising tone.'

  2. Reck The Joint (Steve Poindexter Reck The House remix) (8:04)
Review: Mathematics continues their fine run in 2011 with a slice of acid house history from the legendary Adonis. All the way back in 1988, Adonis teamed up with Charles B and dropped "Lack Of Love". It's presented here by Jamal Moss's label in a new "Summer Of Love 88 - Extended Replay" version that retains all the delightful and unpredictably raw rhythms that duck between heavy 303 usage and tub thumping gospel leads. You have to marvel at the chaotic epicness of a track which is over twenty years old and probably produced on the most primitive of hardware. On the flip Mathematics mainstay Steve Poindexter drops an equally demented remix of Adonis' 1989 jacker "Reck The Joint" that double dares you to dance.

Kicking off with dBridge, then Nomine, now the label take us to New Zealand for its third outing as Akcept takes the controls and proceeds to drive on both sides of the road; "Dreader Than Dread" is an epic bounce back 10 years with its brazenly funk horns and rolling chubby bass groove while "Howl" is a lot more spaced out, starker, late night jam with a fatty sub line that should come with a health warning. Stay alert.

Review: In the super saturated and competitive scene of disco edits, it takes a lot to differentiate yourself from the pack. Enter New York City's Razor N Tape. What do they bring to the table that is different, you may ask? They offer up what they call 'respectful edits'. Got it? There are the ones you can trust and play with confidence. On this volume they present Al Tone, who are known for their eponymous rework series. The duo comprised of Chicagoans Al Bumz and Tone B serve up some lovely Afro boogie on "Feelin' Irie" and some pitched up soulpower in the form of "Simone Manuel". On the flip, there's a familiar hook on the vocal driven deep disco resplice of "Groovin'" then they take us home with the Theo-esque looped sax and falsetto gallup of "Wishes".

Review: Swiss producer Alci first came to light with a run of releases on Robsoul, before migrating to other climes such as Apollonia. Now he makes a second appearance on his own Seeingsounds label with some refined minimal for those who like their beats crisp and intricate. "Rarely Listening" has a dreamy demeanour, but there's plenty of energy folded into the snappy rhythms and loping bleeps of the track. "Humanized Pattern" meanwhile ramps up the bugging funk for a swung and sassy run through micro house done with a whiff of French flair. "Seeing" resides on the B-side with a gloriously dubbed out line in melodies that float lazily over the top of the sharply focused beat.

Review: The most famous whistler in cinema (so arguably the most famous whistler in the world), Alessandro Alessandroni has contributed to cinema, TV and music with as much influence as his old friend and collaborator Ennio Morricone. He was also making some incredibly innovative electronic compositions on the side, it would seem... These four variations were found in an old archive in his African home and have never, before now, been heard before. From the densely-layered spaghetti-flavoured "Afro Voodoo" to the soft sultry swoons of "Afro Sentiment" by way of the sheer dancefloor pump of "Afro Discoteca", this is a truly remarkable find for Four Flies. Made all the more poignant due to his recent passing, too. You know what to do.

Review: Italian imprint Hangover is back. Was it the late great Roger Moore who once suggested that the best cure for such a thing is skulling a can of Coke? More to the point: First up on their second release is French tech house legend Alexkid with the stripped back and minimal groove of "Kebap". Its reductionist tendencies reminiscent of Thomas Brinkmann or Hardtrax era Richie Hawtin. Also on the A side is Frenchmen Marcelo Cura & Origins Of Time with the particularly impressive "Whisper". Its densely layered esoteric hypnotism will appeal to fans of the Romanian sound. On the flip, Rasna Luji's "Le Visionidi Modigliani" (Suono Su Tela) also samples classical sounds and organic elements on yet another trance inducing cut that takes its cues from eastern European minimal. Finally, Massimiliano Jannitti's bouncy afterhours cut "Sur"is the kind of cheeky weirdo jam you'd expect to hear on Sunday morning at Kater Blau.

Deep House
  1. Lola Allen - "Karma"
  2. Mille & Hirsch - "I Get DEEP"
  3. Mateo & Matos - "Idris Rises"
  4. Vincent Inc - "Tears Of God"
Review: AntiDEEPressant is a new label that kicks off with a strong cast of contenders exploring interesting facets of the deep house tradition, starting off with the sultry wonder of Lola Allen's "Karma". There's mystery woven in between the African percussion that shapes out her track, and it's a pleasure to get lost in. Vincent Inc is last on the list, and he cruises in with the slow and strange tones of "Tears Of God".

In perfect contrast "Buzzsaw" is a much sweatier funk jam allowing Cooper to get rapid and tongue-twisty in a way that only he knows how. Keep on pushing...
