Seaside Tune
Seaside Tune (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MLPHEP 08. Rel: 05 Oct 20
Balearic/Downtempo
  1. Floral Rhythm (4:32)
  2. Seaside Tune (4:45)
  3. Blues 909 (3:42)
  4. Heartbeat (4:56)
  5. Message From Library (4:17)
  6. Mosaic Xylos (4:21)
Review: .Mikhail Khvasko has been painting a vivid, sunkissed picture of Balearic bliss with his A Vision Of Panorama project since it first emerged on Mellophonia back in 2016. As the nights start to draw in, this latest drop is just what you need to escape to an imagined coastal idyll where the sun never sets. From the steady groove of 'Floral Rhythm' to the gentle skank of 'Seaside Tune' this is immaculately rendered feel-good music rendered in plush synths with an unmistakable 80s finish. There are beats to be enjoyed on 'Blues 909', but you've never heard the totemic techno machine sound as smooth and mellow as it does right here.

The Evolutions: Phase Two

Deep House
  1. Aleqs Notal - "Midnight" (7:26)
  2. Meftah - "Up From Here" (5:10)
  3. Taelue - "Liberate" (7:20)
  4. Afrikan Sciences - "Bass Reeves" (4:22)
Review: Deep house might not be getting the headlines it did a few years ago, but that actually means those who jumped on the hype train have all alighted once again and now only those truly devoted to the form remain. That means we get high quality EPs like this one from Visions Inc. Aleqs Notal takes us on a spiritual trip littered with toms and jazz-chords to kick things off before Meftah gets more experimental with a broken beat, tripped out keys and rubbery bass all sinking you into a state of trance. For those who like it more straight up, Taelue obliges, and as with all Afrikan Sciences tunes, the closer is a masterfully deep concoction.

  1. Take Over (7:22)
  2. Take Over (Less Patient edit) (5:15)
  3. Bounce & Pull Up (feat Evan Laflamme) (7:46)
Review: Having landed his debut album Bosq Y Orchestra De Madera on Ubiquity Records back in 2013, Bosq will be returning with his second long player on the Californian label later this year. Take Over is the second 12" laid down as a precursor of what Bosq has up his sleeve and the Boston-based Whisky Baron is certainly on good form. Known for his towering vocal contributions to Fela's Egypt 80, Benin-born / Nigerian-raised singer Kaleta once again lines a Bosq production in lead cut "Take Over", and it might just be their heaviest collaboration yet! The Less Patient edit adds a bit of dancefloor weight to the track. Flip for the dense, delay heavy afrobeat burner "Bounce And Pull Up" which features some devilish horns from Evan Laflamme.

  3. Tout Va Bien (8:14)
  4. Alone At Pisecka 12 (7:08)
Review: New York label and party Mister Saturday always brings roughed up, raw and steamy house grooves. This new one is no exception to that unwritten rule and it comes from Russell El Butler who serves up four platters that matter. 'Blah Blah' is a brilliantly brainless house romp with vocal loops and distorted kicks making you march. 'Kruymska' is more tight and taught thanks to the pinging kick drums and molten melodies up top, while 'Tout Va Bien' is a late night cut that glistens thanks to its prickly bass and razor sharp hats. 'Alone At Pisecka 12' closes out in malfunctioning fashion to round out a wide-ranging EP.

  3. You're Leaving But I'll Still Love You (6:04)
  4. You're Leaving But I'll Still Love You (Saine remix) (6:05)
Review: Honey Butter is back with another slab of was as sweet and seductive as the name suggests. Cassettes For Kids takes care of this one with more than one eye on a golden period of mid nineties house and tech. The grooves on the opener are quick but deep, the train-track percussion locking you in while lush, heart melting chords are draped over the top. 'Growing Frustration' is a more peak time cut that never lets up and the first mix of 'You're Leaving But I'll Still Love You' is built on big break beats and a fat, tumbling bassline. Saine remixes with a more playful mood to send you home with a big old smile on your face.

  4. Penguin Vacation (5:20)
Review: Having got the juices flowing via a split re-edit release with Jacques Renault earlier in the year, Cosmic Kids member Daniel T returns with his first full solo EP of floor-ready reworks. Arguably the most ear catching of the lot is "Trinidad Trouble", a fiendishly percussive, cowbell-laden tropical disco affair blessed with carnival-ready flute flourishes and heavily accented Trinidadian vocals. It sounds like a genuinely sweat-soaked peak-time treat. The hits keep coming elsewhere across the EP, from the "do the Bus-Stop" hustle of Blaxpolitation disco rework "Hit The Streets", which provides a seriously strong opening gambit, to the leisurely, laidback and sumptuous sounds of trumpet-sporting afternoon delight "Penguin Vacation".

Review: ** Repress ** Disco Deviance surface for the first time this brandishing a pair of highly prized edits from the man, the myth, the maverick that is Dimitri From Tokyo! Dimitri goes where celebrated Frenchmen Alex Gopher and Etienne de Crecy have been before, re-arranging a seasonal classic from Miss Donna Summer on "French Affair" in suitably slinky style. 1. Feelin You In & Out (5:37)
  2. Feelin You In & Out (7:06)
Review: Luckily for us and you lot reading this - perhaps not so much for the owners of the original copies - Peven Everett has decided to embark on a bit of a reissue marathon, with plenty of his biggest hits resurfacing on our charts after lengthy hiatuses. The king of 'soulful' house has never sounded so good, and it's thanks to Italy's Groovin label that we're graced with two version of 2007's Feelin You In And Out. In case you don't know this monster of a song, just try to imagine an underground version of R Kelly backed by the sort of dubbed-out house made by peeps like Mood II Swing, and you're somewhere close to it. You also get two versions of the hit, one deep version and another more fast-paced take. Magic.

  3. Will Buck - "I Think It's Too Late" (6:31)
  4. Will Buck - "I'll B Right There" (6:11)
Review: Off Track's second EP is a masterclass in tough and ready house that is jam packed with musicality. The kicks of Felipe Gordon's 'We All Got The Time' are scuffed up and heart felt, and the noodling keys are pure joy. 'Back Into Time' then brings even more jazz-funk vibes to a languid beat perfect for sundown and Will Buck then goes solo after that collab with a soul drenched tune Moodymann would be proud of. The vibe is totally switched up for 'I'll B Right There,' which pairs the classic sample with sustained pads and hardcore house drums designed purely to make you sweat.

  1. Session 1 (13:49)
  2. Session 2 (5:39)
  3. Session 3 (6:57)
Review: Before the pandemic struck, Versatile Records veteran Nicolas Chaix was working on a new improvised I:Cube live show to be taken on the road this summer. Sadly, events put paid to the long-serving producer's plans, so instead he sat down with the same hardware set-up and recorded some improvised workouts. It's those - or at least some of them, a second volume may appear in future - that form the backbone of Cubo Live Sessions. In typical fashion, 14-minute A-side 'Session 1' is formidably psychedelic, with Chaix peppering a jacking hardware groove with echoing, alien-sounding riffs, brooding pads and hallucinatory TB-303 motifs. He gets extra aggressive on fiendishly trippy and growling B-side opener 'Session 2', while 'Session 3' is a creepy, slow motion acid delight.

Review: Madrid's Lose Endz arrives on London label Inermu Wax after impressing with a pair of admired singles on Djebali and Brooklyn Bridge Music. The Spaniard hits the ground running with enveloping opener "Today Was a Good Day", where ultra-deep chords and jaunty, jammed-out organ riffs ride a crunchy tech-house grooves, before offering a deeper, chunkier and more bass-heavy take on tech-house via the UK garage-influenced "Faster Than You Think". Over on the flip, "This And That" sees the producer combine ambient techno textures with undulating tech-house beats, while "While Your Voice" is a bolder, acid-fired excursion tailor made for the 4am heads-down crew.

  3. Das Rote Haar (instrumental) (6:54)
Review: Gerd Janson's Running Back has rarely made a missteps in its many years of business. Whether serving up camp disco, rugged techno or the sweetest of deep house, you can always be assured of quality music from quality artists. This time out the boss looks to reissue the 1990 Love Club single 'Das Rote Jaar.' It's a mournful piece with a closely mined, whispering male vocal that makes for an intimate vibe, with the deep and dusty drums are for sensuous late night dancing. The dub is a subtle one that removes the vocal and lets the drums roll, and the instrumental is that bit more upbeat, though the mood remains pensive and alluring.

  8. Kring I (locked groove) (1:00)
Review: Malin Genie's purple patch continues to yield more delights with this latest drop on his self-titled label. This time around the prolific Dutch artist is delving into smoky, hidden corners of house music where dub lingers thick in the air and rough textures scuff depth and character into the synth work. "Aventijn" has a purposeful drum machine tick but its utterly somnambulant in its execution, while "KIAR" lilts on a dusty groove and woozy clouds of funk. "Duppy" has a distinct dub techno influence, but it's still a steadfast house groover at heart, and "Amulius Numitor" ditches the beats for a pure interstellar exploration. With some bonus locked grooves for creative DJs, this is a versatile and imaginatively rendered EP with creative spark to match its usefulness in the mix.

Review: Running Back's Super Sound Singles hits fantastic number five with another steamy power dance offering that looks back to go forwards. Enzo Elia is an Italian edit maestro who offers three different take son a stomping disco cut with stark synth sounds and a vocal that brings the attitude. The vocal version is a real stomping gem, the dub is all about cutting your body loose and the bonus beats is pure filth. Review: Moot Booxle first appeared on NYC Records a couple of years ago alongside Windy City, an alias of label boss James Reeno. The latter has played his part in the producer's solo debut, too, mixing each of the three tracks on show. The undisputed highlight is undoubtedly lengthy A-side 'Transmootation', a deliciously hazy and head-soothing slab of electro/deep house fusion full of bubbly jazz-funk electric piano solos and meandering, intergalactic synthesizer solos. Booxle ups the tempo on flipside opener 'Uno Mama', which smothers a proto-house style groove in energetic electrofunk synth sounds, before repeating the trick on the Boyd Jarvis style brilliance of 'Galactic Matriarch'.

Review: Nervous Horizon return with a special collaborative project from Object Blue and label co-boss Tsvi. Both sitting in the no-genre / body music hinterland, across three tracks they merge both of their uncompromising styles to create a unique mutant sound. 'Thought Experiment' stutters and flares with a wrought tension that's gradually released over rolling, skittering kickdrums (and subverted to pummelling levels by Loraine James on her remix) 'Turing Machine' bridges jungle with techno over a sparse 130 breakbeat. 'Syntax' closes the show on the most forthright note of the set. Pounding kicks and lightning breakbeat strikes, this hits with the militancy both artists share.

Largely overlooked by his UK counterparts, his Trio's albums Do It and Ombre are both well worthy investments for any funk fans. As is "Chameleon". Delivered in two parts, both jams are tighter than a bouncer's crotch squeeze and about a million times funkier. "Part 2" pips it for a highlight thank to its leniency towards sultry wig out territory. Lovely stuff.

Review: Melbourne-based DJ and producer Prequel returns to the Rhythm Section fold for a second release after getting his debut with the much-loved Polite Strangers 12" back in late 2014. After a few appearances here and there in the interim period, this Freedom Jazz Dance 12" suggests Prequel has really expanded his production parameters with four tracks that add spoken word samples and subtle vocal lines to his stellar instrumental flourishes. Local Melbourne beat poet Cazeaux O.S.L.O. brings his distinct vocal tones and inspirations to lead track "Saints", a fine blunted opener that nods to KDJ classic "Amerika". You can see this one being played for months to come! Following this, Prequel throws down some effervescent jazz house on "Nothing Better" and "Walken" with a deviation into more beatdown territory, "You Shall Know The Truth", wedged inbetween.

We don't know any more other than the mysterious imprint promises to serve up "heavy dancefloor-oriented edits on limited 10" format," and the first one is a hand-stamped golden nugget that kick off with a nice analogue deep hue track featuring some classic samples from Pulp Fiction, amongst other things. The debut in the series from obscure San Francisco artist Joel Graham set the bar high, and we are happy to report this latest 12" featuring the work of UK artist Michal Turtle is just as good! A precursor to a wider retrospective planned on MFM, Are You Psychic? features two tracks from the early 80s Turtle improvised in his parents living room using various bits of gear and will delight anyone with a taste for discovering obscure electronic music from days gone by. The whole thing was written over a four year period of "psychedelic usage" and the results offer a blurred reality of real and surreal musical interpretations. A duality of light and dark defines the album which features tough provoking rhymes and inspired technique from hip-hop artist Cambatta, with countless polarizing and multi-entendre compositions making up the album. Review: By now, Dopplereffekt has released so much music that we feel almost guilty in having to introduce it to you. But, perhaps it's a good thing to highlight just what this project is about, and what it has achieved throughout all these years. Founded by Gerald Donald of Drexciya, and now sidekicked with the help of the lesser known Michaela To-Nhan Bertal, Dopplereffekt has been the only real electro outfit to push the genre beyond the confines of its 80s inception. While many other electro projects repeat the same tried and tested formulas on a weekly basis, these two minds have produced some of the most singular and explorative deviations of the style. This new album, Cellular Automata, comes through for Berlin's Leisure System at a time when the scene is in real need of a fresh perspective, and by that we mean the electronic sphere as a whole. These nine tracks cannot be classed as 'ambient' music, there is too much movement and energy amid its pensive waves but, at the same time, it would be difficult to class it as a dance album. There, right in at the core of it all, Dopplereffekt plant their energetic waves of electrifying bass into vast and desolate soundscapes that transport you into a strange and complex world. A planet we'd very much like to visit more often.

Review: With the capabilities of modern discology allowing for the current deluge of disco 'edits', most of which do little beyond extending an intro for ease of mixing, it would have been an intriguing prospect to see what disco edit progenitor Walter Gibbons thought. Sadly we'll never find out, but current edit profiteers could do worse than check out this retrospective of Walter Gibbons remixes compiled by Strut. Nominally split between the 70s and 80s, the first section documents the imaginative reworks of the Salsoul catalogue that helped cement Gibbon's reputation whilst the second focuses on the mid eighties period where he worked closely with Arthur Russell. It was a chance encounter at the Salsoul office which afforded the then 22-year-old Gibbons an opportunity to remix Double Exposure's "Ten Percent", which became the first commercially successful 12inch release. That mix is one of seven tracks which aptly demonstrate the percussion heavy style Gibbon's branded Jungle Music, with the closing 11 minute mix of Betty LaVette perhaps the most impressive example. The second section provides more sonic intrigue, starting off with a previously unreleased remix of Arthur Russell's "See Through", which is followed by Gibbons seminal take on Dinosaur L's "Go Bang" and perhaps the masterpiece of his career - a nine minute remix of Strafe's "Set It Off". Strut have delivered yet another superlative retrospective here. Released on a double LP with a limited bonus mix CD, this is not to be missed!

Review: Three years ago, Gregor Yan made his debut on DeepExplorer with a fine collection of jazz-informed deep house and downtempo workouts. This belated follow-up, an eight-track set that officially counts as the producer's debut album, explores similar sonic territory. Those in search of dusty, hazy and deliciously organic jazz-house should check the mid-tempo warmth of 'Exchange', the piano-laden slow-motion sweetness of 'If She Knew', the mazy Rhodes solos of 'Brother D' and the organ-smothered positivity of 'MLK' (which does, as you'd expect, sample an old Martin Luther-King speech), while those after more seductive, jazz-inclined lusciousness will revel in the haziness of 'Earth' and flute-splattered head-nodder 'Unknown Feelings'.
