  4. Called My Name (Meet The Band) (7:33)
Review: Given that this is Ben Worrall's fourth Crackazat 12" for Local Talk in less than three years, it would be fair to say the project now has a regular home. As with many of his recent tracks, "Proton Blue" looks to classic US garage for inspiration, peppering a bouncy groove with rich organ stabs and jazzy synthesizer melodies. It's accompanied by the alternative "Deep Orbit" version, a more hypnotic and slightly more spacey interpretation that gives greater prominence to the producer's jazzy synthesizer riffs. "Called My Name", meanwhile, is a soulful, jazzy and fluid affair blessed with a hazy vocal and some luscious jazz guitar. The cut's loose and languid jazz-funk influences are explored further on the arguably superior "Meet the Band" remix.

  4. Theme 04 (6:05)
Review: First in a three part series by Dutch producer Frits Wentink, presented in a hand stamped picture sleeve. Wentink has been one of The Netherlands' most steady artists since his first release in 2012. As the head honcho of both Will & Ink and Bobby Donny, he is known for pushing quality house music. Starting off with with the neon-lit late night groove of "Theme 01", the slo-mo boogie down groove of "Theme 02" is equally impressive and had us reminiscing of classic Metro Area. On the flip, "Theme 03" is the EP's most straight up moment: this kind of dusty deep house with sexy retro synths and sleek vox samples are right up our street. "Theme 04" is a woozy and disjointed groove, with its broken beats and skittering melodies getting and inventive groove on: that's for sure.

Review: Re-issue of the TK Disco classic from 1977 and it still sounds as awesome as ever. Particularly if when you get two dons of the current scene to edit it. On the A side Boston's Kon gets on board to give it two fine re-edits. The "Kon Keep It Movin' mix" clocks in at just over eight minutes and works the track main hooks for a lot longer on this cleverly executed an essential edit for any serious DJs box. "Kon's Groove" is a more condensed version of the previous and great modern revision of the track. On the flip we've got none other than Todd Terje, giving Jimmy McGriff's classic "Tailgunner" a tasty re-edit too. The classic from 1977 gets its epic Hammond Jazz organ solo extended over nearly seven minutes of glory!

Review: REPRESS ALERT: With the Grupo Almendra album fresh out of the gates, Italian label Best Records jump right back in with a crucial slice of disco funk from noted arranger, producer and karate expert Pino Presti. "You Know The Way" is a slinky party starter with on-point slap bass, lively brass and sumptuous Philly strings of the highest order. As if the original wasn't funky enough, the B-side features a disco remix from dearly departed New York disco legend Tee Scott, who subtly buffs up the dancefloor potential of the track to devastating effect.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Once more scouring the annals of disco history for the hottest jams, Best look beyond Italy and snap up this much-vaunted slice of American funk from 1982. While second hand prices can get out of control, it's not hard to hear why this glittering prize from Jagg would be so coveted - it's got everything. Jazz-leaning slap bass, mean synthesizer chops and soaring vocals - "Take Time" is prime to set the party off, and no longer is it the preserve of wealthy collectors. Originally a single-sided affair, Best have done the right thing and filled the B-side up with an extended version to let that groove roll on even longer.

Review: The Revenge returns to Hometaping is Killing Music after an eight-year absence. For the occasion, he's collected together a selection of "Lost Grooves", which we can only assume to mean previously unreleased gems from his no-doubt bulging vaults. All four cuts are typically on-point and explore different aspects of house music's long and storied history. So, while "Hold It" sounds like a cross between Inner City and David Morales in Red Zone mode, "Demon Beat" is the kind of sleazy, low-slung throb-job that would once have got Danny Tenaglia hot under the collar. Meanwhile "Long Lost Love" recalls Clark's finest moments on Instruments of Rapture, while "Stuck In Chicago" is a loopy acid jacker that would no doubt thrill Ron Hardy's ghost.

Review: Parisian house and techno outpost Politics Of Dancing steps up with the second installment in its celebration of three years rolling out impeccable dancefloor tackle for the minimally minded generation. iO (Mulen) strides into the fray with the playful bounce of "Prater", all swirling synthesizer ripples and sharp, snagging drums. Chris Carrier meanwhile whips up an inventive twist on dub techno dynamics with some shimmering chords that rub up against subby bass and micro samples. John Jastszebski goes for a moodier effect with "Combo", aiming straight at the heads down crowd, while by way of contrast Tommi Vicari Jnr takes a beautiful, delicate approach to minimal house with the refined EP closer "Take 8".

Review: The seemingly bottomless vaults of Vibraphone Records come up with the goods once again as The True Underground Sound Of Rome present a second instalment of their seminal Minimal Vision. The mood is instantly dreamy on "Cyclops", while "Vertigo" gets more than a little psychedelic, dare we say New Age-y. This tone rings true throughout the record, pulling together more sought after gems and previously unreleased delights from the catalogue of this vitally influential Italian house music force. Just try listening to "Once Upon A Time In Labaro" without being transported to another time and place, all proto-trance synth pulses and Blade Runner samples.

Review: In line with the timely reappraisal of all things R&S related, the resurgent Apollo have seen the opportunity to bring one of their most celebrated records back for another round. Aphex Twin's ambient recordings mature magnificently with age, sounding ever richer and more emotive as the rest of electronic music continues to play catch up all around. From the gentle breakbeats of "Xtal" to the aquatic techno lure of "Tha", the airy rave of "Pulsewidth" to the heartwrenching composition of "Ageispolis", every track is a perennial example of how far ambient techno could reach even back then. It's just that no-one quite had the arm-span of Richard D. James.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Italian house bastion Vibraphone Records has more than proven itself in the realms of classic deep house, but this new release from KNLB certainly speaks to the new age of the label. The unknown producer makes a stunning entry with "Second Wind", an effervescent breakbeat number that harks back to classic 90s Mo Wax sounds with its resonating piano licks and gritty drum samples. "Apollo" meanwhile creates an interesting variation on the dub techno template with a wealth of instrumentation cavorting around a tripped out chord stab, and then "Initialize" drifts off into blissful deep house meditation atop a purposeful beat. Minimono swoop in to inject some direct funk into their remix of "Intialize", and a very fine job they do of it too.

Review: Bristol outfit the Allergies has enjoyed a hugely successful year so far, releasing a string of killer funk and soul sevens on Jalepeno Records. Astonishingly, "Entitled To That" could be their biggest single yet. Certainly, the title track is superb; a revivalist Northern Soul style stomper full of hazy horns, fuzzy guitars, sweaty drums and the kind of strong, empowered vocal that recalls some of soul music's greatest female singers. Wisely, there's a slightly more laidback feel about flipside "Get Down on You", where crunchy Clavinet lines wrap themselves around a snappy funk breakbeat. It's a fine tune, of course, but pales in comparison to the killer A-side. Regardless, this should be an essential purchase for funk DJs.

Review: For their latest deep dive into the world of hard-to-find house classics, Italy's Groove Records take us back to 1996. "House Music Will Never Die" marked Glenn Underground's first collaboration with vocalist Cei-Bei (AKA Curtis Harman) and has long been considered one of the Chicagoan producer's finest releases. Wisely, Groove has decided against tinkering with a classic, instead serving up all four mixes from the original Cajual Records 12". Choose between the classic deep house soul of the GU Cei-Bei Foot Mix, the wonderfully summery, jazz guitar-laden CVO Bismark Hotel Mix, Mark Grant's brilliantly evocative, stretched-out interpretation, and a killer Afro Dub that makes great use of a heavy analogue bassline. All four versions are top notch.

Review: Be With Records look to continue a consistent run of reissuing important rarities by unearthing this gem from Arthur Russell's discography. This debut from the short-lived New York outfit The Necessaries is a key moment in the city's early 1980's art-rock/new-wave movement. Led by artist and composer Ed Tomney and formed of members of East-Coast tastemakers such as The Modern Lovers & Red Crayola, 'Event Horizon' sounds both of its time and forward thinking - playing with angular garage abrasion, jangling oddball art-rock and pop warmth. Russell's involvement, a year after forming respected disco group Loose Joints and just prior to writing his experimental solo cello work, is testament to his broad versatility and voracious love of music. This is an essential album for both Arthur Russell enthusiasts and collectors and lovers of East Coast new wave.

Instead the Russian producer reaches for a warm, disco-influenced sound palette which he then slices and dices into sleek, crafty party workouts with lashings of panache as well as studio ingenuity. Review: It would be fair to say that Melanie de Biasio may not be single-handedly keeping Belgium's jazz tradition alive, but she's certainly spearheading a revival of sorts. This third studio set arrives some four years on from her sophomore set, and 12 months after her most adventurous work to date, the 25-minute Blackened Cities. It's a largely upbeat and hugely atmospheric affair, mixing her usual Nina Simome style jazz workouts with drowsy, piano-laden torch songs, evocative accapella interludes and, in the case of the brilliant "Gold Junkies", dubbed-out, four-to-the-floor fusions of trip-hop and dark soul. Throughout, her superb voice provides a stunning focal point.

Review: Malka Tuti continues to be a hotbed of oddball, outernational wares for adventurous dancefloors, and the Israeli label reaches a new milestone as it presents its first full-length album release. Die Orangen is a project headed up by prolific Australian artist Kris Baha alongside Angelo Cruzman and Dreems, and following a single on Malka Tuti last year they come good with an album of psych-out brilliance that should have a broad reach from Balearic heads to wave-minded disco dancers. "To The Top Of Gloucester" shows they're happy to embrace experimental moods as much as direct hitters, and the loose, live band approach to the music binds all the different styles together perfectly.

Review: Fred Everything's Lazy Days label is a veritable institution by this stage in the game, and it's no surprise to see a label of such stature reaching out to an artist as highly regarded as Atjazz. Martin Iveson, as he's also known, ditches the alias here but the mood is consistent with his reputation. "Leave Me Here" is a jazz-soaked beauty in its original form and when Jimpster takes the controls for a remix. The 1055ml EP is a mixed bag that leads with the title track, which encapsulates everything that's great about the stripped down house sound that Lazare Hoche is committed to. "Sandwiches" meanwhile is a quirky, bugging jam that wriggles under the skin in the most subtle of ways before "Sowhaa" brings a much more hypnotic, pad-laden blend to the table for a soft landing from this feisty 12" of forward-thinking 4/4.

The talented multi-instrumentalist was famously studying medicine in Paris throughout he 60s, but it's clear that down the music path was the only sensible option for this man. African Funk Experimentals brings together some of his most obscure material from the years 1968-1982...and some new gear from 2017! Aside from the absolutely killer artwork featuring on the sleeve, this is a ten-track masterpiece, reaching all corners of the afrobeat heritage, while still retaining something very personal and symbolic of Cameroon's often underrated influence on African funk and boogie. Top marks all round.

Balearic/Downtempo
  1. Sadness Of Being
  2. Sadness Of Being (Max Essa remix)
Review: Uber always knows the right kind of moody, heads down Balearic throb to get stone-cold chillers nodding their heads in approval, and so it goes on this latest transmission from Wawawiwas. "Sadness Of Being" is a perfect introduction to this duo, with the dub tropes turned up to full and the bassline grooves as slinky as they come. In between the heavy delay and reverb there's a real sense of stride about this track, which Max Essa capitalises on when dropping the more beat driven remix on the B side. The broad premise of the original remains intact, with just a little more emphasis on the synthy side of things.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Something Else (11:22)
Review: Mystery label Digwah debuted in the summer, with a soul soaked trip into minimal techno territory that was supported by Ricardo Villalobos, amongst others. Like that 12", Something Else is a single-sided, hand-stamped affair, with no information given about the identity of the producer (or producers) involved. This cut retains the late night techno vibe of the original, but with percussion and whizzing electronic noises that recall classic tech-house from the likes of Swag, Rob Mello and David Duriez, rather than Berghain-friendly minimalism. The subtle, party-minded approach is confirmed by the use of cut-up vocal samples from Cuba Gooding Jr's "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend", which also featured on Nightmares On Wax's 1990 bleep techno anthem, "Aftermath".

Review: Mial Watkins is Doc Daneeka and heads up Ten Thousand Yen which since 2012 has been serving up UK bass inflected house by the likes of General Ludd, Mickey Pearce and xxxy among others. Watkins takes up the reins again for the label's newest release entitled Walk Man Vol 3. On the first side is "Better Dayz" an uplifting early nineties style house anthem in the vein of Mad Mike circa Happy Recordings. The piano loop on this one is absolutely off the hook! On the flip we've got the soulful deep house of "Stay Away From Music" with its dusty drums, groovy bongos and a nice touch of 303 acid: altogether getting down nicely on this lo-slung joint.

  4. Kammermusik
Review: German producer Martin Matiske has been sporadic in his appearances dating back to 2002, but when he releases a record he makes it count. Following previous turns on International Deejay Gigolo and Stilleben, he now brings his fulsome electro sound to Vivod sounding fresher than ever. "Die Nibelungen" draws on a fine tradition of German electronica while using that mechanical melancholy you might find in a Bochum Welt track. "Bayerischer Wald" is a cheery synth-pop celebration, and "Virtuosic Mechanic" is a more snappy club track with plenty of Bunker-friendly darkness packed into its bones. "Kammermusik" cools things down with a lovely meander through plaintive bleep lines and plastic synth leads.

Techno
  1. Pseudo Science (6:03)
  2. Heavy Manners (8:24)
Review: Nick Harris aka A Sagittariun lands on Bristol's Idle Hands with a smacking two-tracker for the techno puritans! Fair enough, the flow and structure of "Pseudo Science" might not be typically classed as traditional techno, but there is so much freedom in its half-step beats and circular percussion shots, making this a beautiful relic of the sort of dance music that was being made just before the rise of 'minimal'. On the B-side, "Heavy Manners" is slower to pick up pace, kicking off with a frosty, barren procession of hi-hats and mild beats, both giving way to the much more powerful swing of the pads and harmonies in the backdrop. Excellent.

Review: Afro 7's latest beautifully packaged 12" - check the luscious, silk-screen printed sleeve - takes a trawl through the back catalogue of obscure Kenyan band Them Mushrooms. The outfit founded in 1969 and continued recording until the mid 1990s, but it's for their late '70s and early '80s synth-laden sevens that they're arguably best known. The four tracks showcased here are all taken from those impossible-to-find singles. There are highlights around every turn, from the chanted male vocals, undulating synths and fretless bass brilliance of "Akumu Nvar Kisimu" and hazy, triple time funk swing of "Ndogo Ndogo", to the fizzing Moog lines and rubbery bass of sweet EP closer "Msondo Ngoma".

Review: Shintaro.D is new on the scene, but this promising Japanese producer follows up on his debut on his own label INIT with this assured 12" for Jus Groove It, taking the stripped down deep house template and injecting it with an off-kilter approach to sound design that subtly makes for one of the most effective DJ tools heard in recent memory. That track in question is "Kohisikarubeki", and its remix by Rhythm & Soul takes those intricately carved shards of sound design and smooths them into a more conventional house music shape. The B-side finds Shintaro.D turning out more of that subversive, future-minded deep house business, with "Waganamidakana" being a clear highlight.

  2. Alma Negra - "In The Beginning"
Review: With his star most definitely in ascendance, Mehmet Aslan brings his Turkish tones to his own Fleeting Wax label with some assistance from Dario Rohrbach on the anthemic, big room burner "Gazel". It's the kind of dramatic twist on house music that will inspire a fevered reaction from the floor, respectfully channeling exotic tropes while retaining a necessary functionality. Meanwhile Rohrbach's collaborative project Alma Negra resides on the B-side with the more delicate, North African simmer of "In The Beginning", tapping into the tradition of transcendental music in an engrossing fashion. Both sides represent the thrill to be found in crossing over ethnic music with Western club tropes.

  1. Jah Nuh (dub) (4:32)
  2. Bless (dub) (2:59)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!! The Sardinian ROHS! imprint based in Berlin, has cut two killer dubs from the depths of Babe Roots studio, served up in DIY style and fashion on a very limited vinyl-only run.

First up, is the Rhythm & Sound inspired 'Jah Nuh Dub' trodding in the lower regions of the sonic spectrum, submerged in bassline and distilled dubwise etiquette, with the filtered chords sprawling across the underbelly in the slow envelope of bass and drum, meditatively.

On the other side, is the real gem (if you ask us) - 'Bless Dub' is a monstrously deep version of The Revolutionaries classic 'Kunta Kinte'.
This rhythm has been versioned a lot already, but Babe Roots interpretation is justified in it's sense for deep soundsystem aesthetic, with a much more introspective yet equally uplifting edge... This one could also make some pretty serious vibrations on a big speaker - Beware.
