  3. Judas - "Play A Little Something"
Review: Albuquerque's finest outpost for purist garage house, Plastik People, continues to mine the classics on the seventh volume of its Collections sub label. First up is the unmistakable class of Zed Bias with "Take You There", a track which represents the garage legend getting into a more housed up frame of mind. Then it's over to F.A.Z.E 1 to keep the pressure up with the heated diva choppage of "Wanna Touch Me" before Judas' "Play A Little Something" takes things deeper but no less bumping. This is an essential package for anyone craving some under the radar gems from the history of 90s garage house.

Balearic/Downtempo
  1. Little River (5:33)
  2. Befreit (5:58)
Review: Anyone who's ever run a record label will happily tell you how it's rare to find musical gold amongst the many demos speculatively submitted by up-and-coming producers. Imagine Claremont 56 boss Paul Murphy's surprise, then, when he received these superb cuts from previously unheralded German musician Ferdi Schuster. Naturally, he snapped them up straight away. A-side "Little River", in particular, is spectacularly good. Based around the sound of a babbling brook, sun-kissed acoustic guitar licks, vintage synthesizer solos and a languid, samba-inspired groove, it's a grade-A chunk of Balearic brilliance. While B-side "Befreit" doesn't quite reach these dizzying heights, it's still a wonderful trip into sunrise-friendly downtempo territory. As debut singles go, it's little less than stunning.

Review: If you were judging Kieran Hebden's 11th Four Tet studio album merely on the way it's presented, you'd immediately think he'd spent the last two years immersed in early '90s ambient house albums. While it's unlikely he's done that, it's fair to say that New Energy does owe a debt to classic electronica sets from that period. For all the exotic instrumentation and subtle nods to post-dubstep "aquacrunk" experimentalism and chiming, head-in-the-clouds sunrise house, the album feels like a relic of a lost era. That's not meant as a criticism - New Energy is superb - but it is true that his choice of neo-classical strings, gentle new age melodies, sweeping synthesizer chords and disconnected vocal samples would not sound out of place on a Global Communication album.

Review: Over the course of his four-year career to date, Evigt Morker has earned a reputation for delivering dark but timeless techno jams. Happily, you'll find plenty of examples on the Swedish producer's first foray on Northern Electronics. Check, for example, the twisted, mildly aggressive riffs, trippy electronics and no-nonsense drums of opener "Fiende", the title track's deep, off-kilter hypnotism and the heart-achingly melancholic "Den Stilla Kammaren", where poignant chords drift across a tough but skittish rhythm track. He also finds space for a dash of metallic, acid-fired insanity, with the warped and mind-altering "Glimt" providing an EP highlight.

Review: Originally pressed (on a limited run) in 2013, LA Latin funk troupe Boogaloo Assassins have reissued these two spellbinding cover versions again due to public demand. Still on a highly limited run, both cuts need to be in your collection: Dawn Penn's "No No No" gets a strict samba switch with lavish percussion and consistent vocal harmonies throughout while Sonny Henry's "Evil Ways" (best known from its Santana cover) gets the dreamy instrumental treatment where the horns and glocks do the narrating over a tight bed of wood blocks, shakers and liquid Rhodes. Killer stuff and Juno is one of the few stores outside of USA which is carrying the 45. Don't Sleep !

Review: Eccentric, California-based imprint Take Away has put out some impressive 12" singles since launching earlier in the year. Predictably, this two-tracker from the little-known Soul Reductions is another stone cold killer. A-side "Got To Be Loved" - a bouncy, pitched-up disco-house floorfiller that sits somewhere between Tiger & Woods and late '90s "French Touch" house - leads the way, sounding like the kind of cut that will quickly raise the temperature out on the dancefloor. Flipside "A Rose Is A Rose" is a deeper and woozier offering, delivering a rolling house re-interpretation of a boogie-era electrofunk gem with added filter effects.

Review: If you're looking for serious, late night sleaze, dial 1-800-PBR. Alternatively, purchase this fine 12" from Leeds twosome PBR Streetgang. In its original form, "Late Night Party Line" is a filthy chunk of breathless, party-starting brilliance - a thrusting, heavily electronic workout that joins the dots between New York freestyle, acid house, mid '80s Italo-disco and the sort of European interpretations of Chicago house that were once all the range in London's LGBTQ venues. Over on the flip you'll find a rock solid Dub that wisely allows the rubbery, all-action groove to take centre stage, largely by removing the original's breathy vocal samples and adding a little more TB-303 driven funk.

Review: Fresh from the release of a fine EP of braindance-influenced workouts on Analogical Force, mysterious producer Brainwaltzera delivers his second full-length excursion. This time round, the influences are a lot more horizontal in tone, as the sometime Film artist explores the blurred lines between early '90s ambient, IDM, intelligent techno, drowsy trip-hop and deep space electro. It's a heady and intoxicating brew, as inspired by contemporary takes on classic British electronica as Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin. Highlights bubble to the surface with impressive frequency, from the hazy and horizontal beauty of "Poly_Ana Summers" and Pete Namlook style "Take 1" (complete with tape hiss and cyclical, Steve Reich style melodic movements), to the crunchy, skewed beats of "Frikadel (The End Bit)".

Review: Scott Ferguson's highly collectable and mysterious concept was a seriously hot ticket with total anonymity running through the early releases. This ensured the full focus was on the vibes, grooves and dancefloor. Now, three years after the second EP 3, he gives the project one final hoorah with a signature range of physical late night styles. Ranging from smoky, slo-mo hypnotically plodding soul of "Track One" to all-out acid frazzles of "Track Three", it's a fittingly broad and on-point way to end a great concept series.

Review: Brooklyn's SecondHand Records bossman Fatik lays down a wedge of powerful editry in the third volume of his Morgan Avenue imprint. Following dispatches from the don Nicky Siano and Osmose & byDesign, Fatik celebrates disco funk and soul in all their many deeply-dug shapes and forms. Ranging from the straight up floor pumps and gospel-level drive of "Every Night Venus Shines Bright" right the way through to the jazzier, hazier piano-snaking "Eddie Talk", all four tracks are subtly enhanced, retaining their OG power but charged for a modern day hoedown. Don't sleep on these.

Review: Lisiere Collectif made a big impression with their 2014 debut EP on Mike Grant's Moods & Grooves label, Les Sons De La Lisiere. Since then, the Romanian trio's output has been sporadic but rarely less than rock solid. Here they make their first appearance on Spain's ODT label, first serving up the pleasingly broken tech-house rhythms, deep space chords and unidentified flying electronics of "U-2902-16". The track that follows, "B-0912-15" is an altogether warmer and more intergalactic affair; a Motor City techno influenced chunk of late night deepness underpinned by a rolling groove. Turn to the flipside for two interpretations of "U-2902-16": a deep and hypnotic take from Steve O'Sullivan blessed with crispier percussion, and a pleasingly picturesque and melodious re-imagining by old pals Glueped.

Review: It was probably inevitable that Let's Play House co-founder Jacques Renault would eventually make an appearance on another Brooklyn institution, Razor 'N' Tape. Renault is, of course, a serial re-editor with a string of fine EPs to his name. There's predictably plenty to set the pulse racing across the four tracks, from the jazz guitar-laden disco-funk hedonism of opener "Cold Blooded", to the loose and punchy, horn-heavy warmth of hazy Afro-disco closer "That Sound" (which, thrillingly, includes a tweaked, teased, dubbed and extended percussion break). In between, you'll find the high-tempo disco-pump of "Dream Machine" and the piano-laden funk workout "Get Down".

Review: Since first pitching up on Hypercolour late last year, hardware fetishists London Modular Alliance has continued to deliver some of the most exciting electro around. Famously, the trio construct their cuts entirely using modular synthesizers, jamming live until they settle on a groove or riff to explore further. That guarantees that their machine funk sits somewhere between the pulsating hypnotism of classic Kraftwerk, the intergalactic moodiness of Drexciya and the harder-edged fodder popular in places like Rotterdam and the Hague. It goes without saying that this EP is packed with killer cuts from start to finish, something that makes picking highlights truly tricky. Really, all you need to know is that it's a must-have.

  1. Checkmate (6:27)
  2. Checkmate (Cinthie remix) (7:23)
  3. Checkmate (Steve Rachmad remix) (8:02)
Review: Kerri Chandler has history with Watergate, having previously contributed to their acclaimed mix series back in 2014. "Checkmate" is his first 12" for the imprint since, and sees him deliver a cheery chunk of synthesizer-heavy positivity that may remind some listeners of the more sparkling end of Italian dream house. Certainly, the baggy piano riffs and jaunty synth bassline reminded us of all-time classic "Sueno Latino", and "Checkmate" is no doubt capable of soliciting the same kind of boisterous response when dropped at the right time. Cinthie delivers the first remix, opting for a polished but groovy deep house interpretation, before Steve Rachmad places Chandler's bold piano riffs atop a crunchy techno rhythm track with predictably impressive results.

  1. Track 1 (7:42)
  2. Track 2 (6:29)
Review: As far as hush-hush re-edit/remix series go, it's hard to top the catalogue of Glasgow-based Secret Squirrel. The label's genius lies mainly in the club-ready, tried-and-tested nature of the untitled and un-credited rearrangements, which are handed to the imprint's well-known (but naturally secretive) chief by fellow working DJs. Volume 16 begins with an easy-to-mix dub style revision of an Italo-disco era classic, which strips out the original vocals and turns it into a much more locked-in late night groove. Arguably even better is the flipside excursion, a kind of two-step proto-house/early Chicago house workout blessed with some spine-tingling vocal passages.

Review: You'll be unsurprised to learn that the latest reissue on Floating Points' Melodies imprint is of a record that is fiendishly hard to find. Collectors have long regarded "Everything That Shines Ain't Gold", a sumptuous funk-soul workout full of bold Hammond organ lines and jazzy guitar licks, as something of a "Holy Grail", so it's fantastic see the track getting a worthy reissue. For this edition, you'll find the full version (originally cut into two parts to fit on a 7") on side A, with a fresh Floating Points re-edit on the flip. His revision is naturally tastefully done, rolling with the sweetest instrumental passages before breaking into Moore's superb vocal.

Review: Danish producer Milan Zaks has largely impressed since releasing his first cassette of dusty, rave-influenced downtempo grooves last year. Modern Species, his first outing for Firecracker Recordings, is easily his most expansive and impressive release to date. Stretched out across two slabs of wax you'll find dreamy, jungle-influenced deepness ("World A", "For Real For You"), cosmic dub ("Stellar Clusters", "Ascension"), spacey ambient techno ('Entry Mode"), Motor City influenced positivity ("Parallax") and Boards of Canada style loveliness ("Reluctant Memory"). Predictably, it's all superbly produced, with the material proudly sitting in the no man's land between club-ready rollers and horizontal home listening fare.

Review: Those who dig around Bandcamp for inspiration may have come across Islandman, a Turkish producer and multi-instrumentalist dedicated to jaunty Balearic fusions of summery styles and sounds. Rest In Space marks his first release for an established label - Kenneth Bager's fine Music For Dreams imprint - and offers the perfect introduction to his seductive sonic world. The ten instrumental cuts included are colourful and attractive, with the Istanbul native wrapping jazzy guitar solos, whistling synthesizer melodies and Persian melodies around a variety of gentle, sun-soaked grooves. There are occasional nods towards drowsy new age ambience, dub and Pat Metheny style jazz-funk fusion, but for the most part it's a sparkling and humid affair.

Review: South Africa's Letta Mbulu has put out a vast amount of quality material in her lifetime, and although the singer was based far away from Europe, her music was picked up by the London massive during the mid '80s at clubs like Dingwalls and featured heavily in the rare groove digs. The opener "Sweet Julu" is now a London two-step classic, while other tracks like "Nomalizo" or "The Village" are more on the disco side, all of them filtered with a distinctly tropical edge! A top reissue!

Review: Fleeting Wax introduces Eva Geist to their rooster - a very promising producer and live act. With a nordic feeling of nostalgia Blumareciano depicts the mediterranean sea landscape on a cloudy winter day. Soft beats, braid arpeggiators and thin out vocals build a cinematic scenario of spacious narration, a odyssey vacation thrilled by the new and encouraged by the hope to one day come back home. San Propers Remix takes Blumareciano down to a rusty dirty club and manages to combine techno with the deep vocals of Eva Geist.

Review: The clue is in the title... OTE step up with two sparkling afro diamonds right here. Two of the coolest sides of the vibe coin, too: "Back To Kingston" is a carnival meltdown-in-waiting. Acidic, stamping, scorched with horn drama and gutsy vocals, this will absolutely shatter floors this summer. The label's own Jimmy Rogue maintains the heat with a much deeper, understated funk build on "Yeah Yeah", but when that acid and those horns riff back in.... Oh boy.

Review: Former Slum Village and Platinum Pied Piper beat maker Waajeed has thrown himself into soulful, synth-laden deep house production of late, primarily by making his presence felt on cuts by fellow Detroit legend Theo Parrish. Here he strikes out on his own with a brilliantly colourful, imaginative and on-point EP of solo productions. There's much to admire throughout, from the looked vibraphone melodies, darting brass and undulating broken house rhythms of "Shango", to the Dego and Kaidi Tatham style, jazz-funk influenced electro smoothness of "Better Late Than Never". Opener "Winston's Midnight Disco", where hushed synth-disco samples are wrapped into alien synth lines and elastic bass, is also rather fine.

Review: The most famous whistler in cinema (so arguably the most famous whistler in the world), Alessandro Alessandroni has contributed to cinema, TV and music with as much influence as his old friend and collaborator Ennio Morricone. He was also making some incredibly innovative electronic compositions on the side, it would seem... These four variations were found in an old archive in his African home and have never, before now, been heard before. From the densely-layered spaghetti-flavoured "Afro Voodoo" to the soft sultry swoons of "Afro Sentiment" by way of the sheer dancefloor pump of "Afro Discoteca", this is a truly remarkable find for Four Flies. Made all the more poignant due to his recent passing, too. You know what to do.

Review: Hot on the heels of Monty's EP comes another barbed and bulging EP from 1985 bossman Perez. Tapping into his darker, heavier machine funk tendencies, this is Alix in 3am drum & bass dance mode: "Lucky Charm" is a purring subby low-rider, "Blips" is straight back to 2009 with its angular two-step, sinewy sound design and badman bass and "Nighthawks" is a dark soul roller with subtle samplecraft and pranged out basses. "Missing Pieces" brings us back down to earth safe and sound with a much dreamier atmosphere wrapped lavishly around Perez's light-footed beats and Javeon's distinctive soulful tones. 1985 out of 10.

Review: Another week, another killer release from Kiwi deep house sorts Chaos in the CBD. This one, a two-tracker on the In Dust We Trust label that they set up with pal John Sable earlier this year, is undoubtedly one of their strongest EPs to date. On the A-side you'll find the typically drowsy and atmospheric "Zona Del Silencio", a tactile and humid chunk of early morning deep house built around languid synth-bass and rolling, carnival-friendly percussion. The rolling bongo hits return on creepier flipside "Unsound Mind", the musical equivalent of stumbling through a rainforest at 3am while high on herbal remedies. As with many of the duo's productions, it subtly builds throughout, offering movement despite the hypnotic, slow-build nature of the track's construction.

Review: Having done some sterling work in reissuing the ace material from Archetype, the emergent Pittsburgh label was / is now turns its attention to cult mid-90s techno label Temple Records NYC, and this rough and ready burner from Cube 40 (a short lived outfit with close ties to Air Liquide and more besides). "You Make Me Function" is everything you want in an acid party banger, with a killer vocal hook looped into infinity and enough jack in the drums to lift and articulated lorry off the ground. "Fun House" is the more rowdy of the two, coming on strong with a Dance Mania friendly swagger and healthy amounts of 303 thrown into the mix.

  1. Algo No Ar (4:07)
  2. Algo No Ar (Steven J edit) (4:34)
Review: Fresh from '78: Brazilian funk lothario Marcelo's first big single - and a peak track from his debut eponymous album from the same year - gets a timely revisit from the Steven J's reissue/edit imprint Pepite. With its subtle piano striking Q&A, wild bass runs and clam-tight guitar/drum groove, Marcelo calls his way through the jam as if everything is a chorus. With its layered vocals, it's gutsy call to action for any dancefloor. Steven's edit stretches out the instrumental bars and brings out focus on the staccato vocal hook with a rising sense of momentum. Two great sides, one dope 45.
