Review: Since emerging in 2019, Inflo's socially conscious, politically charged Sault collective has delivered a string of inspired, impossible-to-pigeonhole albums that thoughtfully reflect on what it is to be black and British in the 21st century. Nine, the crew's latest set (and first of 2021) is every bit as incendiary, versatile and impactful as its predecessors, with the 10 collected tracks touching on everything from drowsy R&B, spoken word, classic soul and post-punk rock, to UK bass mutations, gospel, jazz-funk, Charles Stepney style excursions and hazy downtempo beats. Mixing live instrumentation and electronics with a wealth of spoken, sung and rapped vocals, Nine is a genuinely stunning, thought-provoking album full of razor-sharp lyrics and brilliantly executed musical movements.

  5. It Ain't Right (DG Reel Need 2 edit) (7:02)
Review: Back in 2014, Chez Damier dropped two mixes of 'Speechless' on Popcorn Records, paying tribute to fabled Parisian nightspot Rex Club in the process. Now the Prescription legend brings the cut back to life for Adeen, and there's a whole cast of other big hitters involved as well this time. First up, Nicholas remixes 'Speechless' and goes in heavy on a Rhodes hook, while Damier himself doffs his cap to Berlin's house mecca on the fluttering, guitar-laced 'Panorama Bar mix'. Camille Migas creates something limber, expressive and sparkling for more reflective moments. On the flip, more high-grade remixes from Jef K and DG complete the package for some of the finest house music money can buy.

Review: The last ten years have seen no shortage of bands with their delay pedals set to stun intent on capturing an aura of dreamlike radiance. Yet Texas 'pop-noir' troupe Cigarettes After Sex are no ordinary shoegazers, for a variety of reasons - frontman Greg Gonzalez' androgynous and dulcet tones may be part of the appeal, yet moreover it's the quality of the songwriting here, which never falls prey to the style-over-substance traps of their peers. Indeed, this debut is more than enough to justify the considerable hype around this outfit, being a collection of ditties as sultry as they are atmopsheric.

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. The Loneliest One (9:07)
Review: Al Kent's Million Dollar Disco is back in business with a surefooted single-sided press of a sumptuous piece of disco taxidermy. Taking the vocal from The Four Tops' 'Ask The Lonely' and some licks from 'It Seems To Hang On' by Ashford & Simpson, Kent has cooked up something achingly beautiful, for when you want the dancefloor to get all misty eyed. It's no accident that it's been mixed down at the legendary Green Door studio in Glasgow either - this sounds as warm and bubbling in your ears as any of the consistently great-sounding music that spills out of that spot.

  1. Crossed Track (4:15)
  2. Similar Beat (3:47)
Review: Mushi 45 main man Mister Mushi is as close to an edit god as you can get, frankly He shows that again here on another of his superb 7"s. The a-side from the Japanese DJ and producer is as tight as they come. It adds many new layers to an iconic tune, with big horns, kicking hip hop drum work and a funky bassline that you hope will never end. It's action packed from front to back, and cannot fail to detonate any dance floor. ON the back is a version that is stripped of all the extra flair, but rolls deep and offers jazzy keys, snatched vocal snippets and a languid, slow-funk groove that still has plenty to offer.

Review: Gold standard funk fanatics Mukatsuku again look to Latin American for their latest volume in their ongoing Colombian Latin Funk & Salsa Gems series. Both of the cuts here have been carefully picked from Disco Fuentes back catalogue with Adolfo Echeverria Y Su Orquesta's 'Sabroso Bacalao' first up. The pianos are killer from the off, with shuffling percussion and nimble drum work all finished with fiery vocals. Fruko Y Sus Tesos's 'Mi Verdadero Son' is on the reverse and has more infectious vocals and wild brass stabs that make you want to flail your every limb around way above your head. Pure heat as ever here and hand-numbered to just 500 copies. Strictly no repress. As played by DJ Koco..Gilles Peterson..The Allergies.. Dom Servini... Skeme Richards..Bobbito..

Review: DRPN GEMS is a brand new label on the block and it is here to serve up crowd rockin' block party joints. This opening gambit is a real show stopper with Wally Puma and Jim Sharp mashing up myriad different R&B and hip hop sounds into popping new jams. Label boss Puma takes care of the A side with a hybrid blend and crafty remake of two old school anthems that are deep cut and groovy. On the reverse are a couple of super sharp DJ tools and body-popping breaks that cannot fail to move a club. This is a red hot debut 7" from what looks like a promising new label.

Review: Stix Records is the sub-label of superb French outlet Favorite Recordings, and it is reserved for heavy dub cuts. This one finds label regular Mato reworking a classic reggae roller first written by Kool & The Gang. His gorgeous version is perfect for hot summer nights with its languid Fender Rhodes leads and sun kissed beats. It's loved up and perfectly, frankly. On the flip is a reggae rework of Bill Withers', who is sadly no long with us, 'Use Me,' repackaged with a playful harmonica lead and more grinding chords over the gently tumbling beats.

Review: It may have taken a while - his massive debut single 'Hyph Mngo' was released 12 years ago - but Joy Orbison has finally got round to recording his debut album. It's a highly personal affair, peppered with speech snippets from various family members (including his mum, dad, sister, cousins and famous uncle, Ray Keith). It's a narrative device that works well, providing a unifying thread throughout a woozy, musically eclectic concoction that sees the now veteran UK producer give his distinct spin on ambient, slow house, two-step garage, deep house, post-dubstep beats, dubbed-out soundscapes, British bass music, experimental electronica, cutting-edge deep D&B and much more besides. It's perhaps not the all-out assault on the dancefloor some may have expected, but it is a genuinely brilliant and entertaining album.

Review: The mysterious Sault troupe is back with a call to action and revolutionary soul soundtrack that really bangs the box. "Ain't nothing gunna keep us silent" the lead singer yelps on 'Stop Der', which is an immediate banger after the soothing ambience and closely mic-ed whispers of the opener, which muse on what it means to be black. The rest of the record is a hard hitting mix of crisp drums and empowering vocals, with elements of classic soul as well as contemporary jazz colouring the grooves. This is powerful music with an even more powerful message.

Review: Legendary DJ and producer DJ Jazzy Jeff might be best known for his work in the world of hip hip but here he dives foot first into some fresh house grooves. 'Evil' is the sort of steamy, funk laced gem that you might expect to come from the studio one certain Moodymann. The lush guitar licks, noodling keys and well placed vocal samples all ooze authenticity and class. They meld the old with the new into something simple irresistible. A fine instrumental pairs things back even further for more straight up dance floor thrills.

Bold Soul Sister (Record Store Day RSD 2021)
  1. Bold Soul Sister (2:39)
  2. Somebody (Somewhere) Needs You (2:36)
Review: The legendary Ike and Tina Turner were at the peak of their collective powers back in the late 60s. For this Record Store Day, two of their most sought after classics make it on to a special 7". First up is an ice-cold early funk jam 'Bold Soul Sister' that has big funk guitar riffs from Albert Collins. It landed initially on the Blue Thumb label in 1969 and has since been pillaged by hip hop producers for all its golden samples. Reverse this one and you'll find 'Somebody (Somewhere) Needs You' which was a classic North Soul tune and has since become hugely sought after. It was written by Frank Wilson and an original will cost you over L150 so don't sleep on this one.

Review: You might have heard about this LP..... After a pre-release campaign that took on Hollywood-esque proportions, French pair Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter return as Daft Punk with their fourth studio album Random Access Memories sporting a A-list cast of guests and contributors. Given the input of disco icons Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rogers it's entirely understandable that the overbearing sound on Random Access Memories is one of classic disco with lead single "Get Lucky" a good indicator for what to expect. There's also a smattering of yacht rock within the thirteen track set, whilst the ubiquitous Panda Bear turns up on the midnight stutter funk album highlight "Doin' It Right". Those expecting a return to Daft Punk's Homework heyday will be disappointed but Bangalter and de Homem-Christo are touching forty so the polished, expertly constructed disco direction makes perfect sense.

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Stomp Your Feet (7:23)
  2. Dub Up To The Bumper (7:59)
  3. In Your Blood (7:00)
Review: Dave Lee's Remixed With Love series returns for 2021, though this time he's keeping tight-lipped about the identity of the artists and tracks he's reworked. It doesn't take a genius to work out the source material he's mined for EP highlight 'Dub Up To The Bumper', a deliciously delay-laden, Larry Levan style 1980s NYC dub of Grace Jones favourite 'Pull Up To The Bumper'. Those who prefer the more traditional end of the 1970s disco spectrum will love 'Stomp Your Feet', a heavily orchestrated affair full of sweet female vocals, percussive breakdowns, warming horns and mazy Clavinet motifs, while closing cut 'In Your Blood' is a fine revision of a solo-laden disco-funk number rich in cut-glass strings and killer horn arrangements.

Review: American rapper Pras put out his mega-hit 'Ghetto Supastar' back in 1998. It featured the legendary rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard and seductive vocal of r&b singer Mia and was one of the year's biggest hits. The rumbling bassline, the filthiness of ODB and the sweetness of Mia just struck a perfect combo. It's pressed up here on a super little limited edition 7" that is backed with another similarly party-popping hip hop joint. This time ODB takes the lead on 'Got Your Money' while Kelis provides the countering vocal. The crisp boom bap and rough/smooth vocal duo still bangs now.

Part of that is a number of essential long players that go deep on the art form, but of course they will always be best known by many for their standout singles. 'Gravel Pit' is one of them and is dropped on the limited edition 7" with 'Uzi (Pink Ring)' on the flip. It's a floor-filling tune with a bump n grind beat, slick rhythms and the seductive female response. The b-side hits harder, with big horns and molten chords next to some raw verses that bring the attitude.

The Many Faces Of Daft Punk: A Journey Through The Inner World Of Daft Punk features disco royalty such as Niles Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder and Cerrone, while more contemporary producers from the house music spectrum feature also, such as Detroit's Scott Grooves (featuring Parliament/Funkadelic), The Micronauts and Versatile's I:Cube receive de Homem-Christo and Bangalter's midas touch. the latter's 'Disco Cubizm" from '96 being a particular highlight on the remix side of things. Review: The best thing since Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful", Denmark and Norway's Aqua, to '90s R&B, Trance and '00s Dubstep combined is Sophie's Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides. With more meta-references than you can poke a brain at, the album and its hyper-array of sounds is set to light up the couture cosmo of New York City as much as it is a teenager's bedroom south of the border. In effect, Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides is one of the most colourful excursions through music you can have, striking off a plethora of pop music iterations, to rave, deep ambient and the most experimental of dance music. A seriously defining album by one of modern day music's greatest minds. Roll out the red carpet.

Review: Given the recent rise in interest in early-to-mid 1990s ambient techno, IDM and melodic electronica, it was probably only a matter of time before Paul Smith dipped into the archives of his Likemind label and offered up a new collection of period works from Nurmad Jusat under the Nuron and Fugue aliases. The eight tracks scattered across this essential double-pack originally appeared on two separate EPs in 1993 and '94 respectively. The standard is exceptionally high throughout, with Jusat casually joining the dots between deep space electro, B12/Black Dog style IDM and bubbly, acid-flecked ambient techno. We expect this to (righty) sell quickly, so don't hang around if you want to snag a copy.

Review: Big week for Jonathan 'Smoove' Watson this week, with a reissue of his 2009 classic 'Beggerman' he created with regular partner in crime John Turrell, with whom since 2007 he has headed up a funk/soul/jazz band from North East England. Now he serves up this wicked funk edit on UK label Wack Records, a label he's very much synonymous with. On the A side we have the strong lyrical delivery of Biz Markie on 'Queensbridge', followed on the flip with the block rocking beats of Herma Puma's 'Brooklyn' (Smoove mix).

Review: The 5 Boroughs label never misses and here comes another sure shot of rare and classic hip hop and soul on tasty 45rpm vinyl. This time out, 'Road to the Riches' by Kool G Rap & DJ Polo is in the headlights. It's a tune that sampled Billy Joel's 'Stiletto' and layers up woody beats, big piano energies and slick vocals with some of the stylish scratching that defined this era. O the flip side is the original sample source played out in full - a soul offering with wandering piano work and prickly drums that has plenty of swing to it.

Review: Sushitech continue to celebrate the depth and breadth of their catalogue with another 15th anniversary reissue in the form of this surefooted two-tracker from Delano Smith and Norm Talley. This is the sweet spot where Detroit house and Detroit techno intertwine, leading in with the dreamy haze and steady trucking groove of 'Constellation'. 'Detroit 2-Step' has a spicier demeanour which artfully merges sultry sax with an ear-snagging riff which sounds organic and metallic all at once. Again, the groove is locked down and impossible to shake off course, making this heady club tackle for those who want to season their set with some of the finest rollers in the game.

Review: In line with the timely reappraisal of all things R&S related, the resurgent Apollo have seen the opportunity to bring one of their most celebrated records back for another round. Aphex Twin's ambient recordings mature magnificently with age, sounding ever richer and more emotive as the rest of electronic music continues to play catch up all around. From the gentle breakbeats of "Xtal" to the aquatic techno lure of "Tha", the airy rave of "Pulsewidth" to the heartwrenching composition of "Ageispolis", every track is a perennial example of how far ambient techno could reach even back then. It's just that no-one quite had the arm-span of Richard D. James.

Earlier in the year they delivered Untitled (Black Is), a heartfelt, angry and righteous set of soul, funk, drill and spoken word tracks that provided a brilliant commentary on what it means to be black in 2020. It's a contender for album of the year, for sure, and the good news is that this speedy follow-up is every bit as essential. It's undoubtedly more celebratory than its predecessor, but every bit as musically detailed, combining cutting-edge electronics and all manner of infectious rhythms with enlightening vocals and all manner of live jazz, soul, punk-funk and jazz-funk instrumentation (as well as some seriously evocative orchestration).

Review: Global dance music superstar Peggy Gou comes back with a second super summer single that is widely infused with her own distinctive influences. Chiefly, that is a love of 90's dance anthems, which was rekindled in her during downtime during the pandemic. Released via her own Gudu Records, 'I Go' is a catchy, singable bit of throwback dance-pop with her own vocals front and centre. The old school beats and bass will get any party pumped, with the synth work looks to the cosmos and explores a very different vibe to her previous single. An instrumental and acappella are also included on this lovely 12".

Review: Having recently made their debut via a fine lovers' rock cover of Eddie Kendricks classic 'Date With The Rain', East Coast Love Affair (AKA "the Athens of the North house band", according to member and label founder Euan Fryer) return with something rather different. 'Without You' is a deliciously dreamy, effortlessly soulful vocal deep house number that's as immersive, warm and comforting as a loved-up hug from that special person in your life. It sounds like it could have been made in NYC or NJ in the very late 1980s, but that's no bad thing. Over on the flip Fryer and his collaborators provide an authentic, boogie era-style extended remix of Mary Love Comer's 'Come Out of The Sandbox', giving it a reverential but far more DJ-friendly twist.

His own Up The Stuss label is the home for his latest project, a collab with SAM on a bunch of hugely useful club tracks. Each one is aimed at the club, but different moments of the night. There is a lovely depth and warmth to 'Spaceship' that gets you in the mood, while the likes of 'Here To Catch You' are dreamy 5am joints and 'Sirine' is busy but balmy, with deft synth motifs and kinetic drum work that sweeps you off your feet. Lovely stuff.

'Confrontations,' being a rebuild of a rare disco funk 45 by Homegrown Syndrome. On the backside is 'Shake' which goes deeper but still has plenty of dance floor appear. It has tropical perc and whirring electronics that just scream 'dance' while the actual screaming vocal reminds of Moby classic 'Go!' Review: On his latest expansive double-pack, Theo Parrish has decided to dip into his epic back catalogue. The four featured tracks are taken from two sought-after, hard to find EPs released in 1997 and 2001 respectively. Opener 'Smile' is arguably one of the Detroiter's most magnificent musical moments of all time: an epic slab of drowsy Motor City deep house built around idiosyncratic drum programming, ultra-deep chords, toasty bass and an effects-laden vocal snippet. 'Lost Keys' is a breezier and looser affair marked out by Latin style piano motifs, jazzy house beats and tactile bass, while 'Dreamer's Blues' is a languid, percussion-and-electric piano rich number that tends towards the hazy and jazzy. Finally, 'Lost Angel' is an ultra-deep affair whose spacey chords seem to stretch out eternity.

Review: Although the Australian outfit Regime roots are in revivalist funk, 'Never Gonna Stop' sees them turn their hands to warm, loved-up and sun-kissed soul of the kind that was once all the rage in the mid 1970s. The grooves are toasty, the male and female lead vocals effortlessly soulful, and the instrumental touches - think languid jazz guitar solos, sweeping strings and lazy, trumpet-heavy horn arrangements - little less than superb. Flipside 'Deuzy Vibe', a P-funk flavoured, turn-of-the-80s boogie-soul style affair, is almost as good. There aren't that many of these -vinyl 45s around, so buy now to avoid disappointment.

Yet here we are, bathing in the gentle beauty of Peace Or Love, the Norwegian duo's surprise sixth studio album. It's a formidably enjoyable affair that's as easy-going and gently sun-kissed as any of their previous excursions, with the duo adding quietly soulful, soft-focus vocals to tactile and pin-bright backing tracks that combine folksy acoustic guitars, twinkling pianos and lilting strings with shuffling rhythms that variously doff a cap to bossa-nova, samba, classic pop and French chanson. It's not difficult or challenging in any way, but given the state of the world right now, we're more than happy to settle for cheery, soft-focus beauty.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Last October, acclaimed saxophonist Pharoah Sanders turned 80 years young, and his input on this album is testimony to the fact he has clearly aged like a fine wine. Not that this is to suggest preceding outings were anything less worthy than this collaborative project, which sees Sam Shepherd, the British electronic artist better known to most as Floating Points, write nine spectacular arrangements which are then performed by said brass legend, alongside The London Symphony Orchestra.

The results are spectacular, and wildly far-reaching, albeit firmly rooted in jazz with classical undertones. From the movements that made this final cut, some are whisper quiet and delicate to the point of risking breaking off if you were handling haphazardly. Others are booming loud, musical jumbo jets landing at the end of another great crescendo. Whether hushed or monumental, though, we can feel every note and bar of this masterpiece.

Atmo is a veteran of the German electronica scene, with a discography deeply bedded into Pete Namlook's imperious Fax universe and boasting collaborations with the likes of David Moufang and Ramin Naghashian. Dublin's Mick Chillage meanwhile has released swathes of material on labels like ...txt as well as via his own channels. This likely pairing find common ground in languorous, sweeping synth lines that roam free over extended run times. In many ways, this release on A Strangely Isolated Place feels like a natural extension of what both artists were doing on Fax when it was still operational, so if you're a fan of that classic ambient techno sound, this release has exactly what you're looking for.

Her first single in over two years, it translates to 'Butterfly' and is another collaboration. This time with fellow Korean sensation OHHYUK who is the lead singer and guitarist in the band Hyukoh.
