  3. Jacksonville - "Twilight Industries" (7:58)
  4. Satore - "Keep On" (5:31)
Review: Well over two years has passed since the release of Keeping The Legacy, a compilation style EP featuring tracks inspired by "the classic sounds from Chicago, New York and Detroit". This belated follow-up begins with something rather special: a fine Jorge Caiado 'Morning Dub' of lesser known Abacus and Chez Damier hook-up "Closer". While it boasts their usual chunky, groovy bottom-end, the mix also makes great use of a yearning, cyclical electronic melody. Elsewhere, James Duncan delivers the hazy deep house bump of "416 Zone (Dub Mix)", Jacksonville laces dreamy, drifting chords over a killer bassline and heavy percussion on "Twilight Industries", and Satore reaches for the cowbells and Gwen Guthrie vocal samples on the disco-influenced throb of "Keep On".

Tanz (12")
Cat: LVX 015. Rel: 09 Feb 15
  1. Grau
  2. Hass
  3. Lieb
  4. Hell
Review: Machinedrum's Aden alias has so far stayed strictly within the lurid realms of the Ultramajic label he operates alongside Jimmy Edgar, with this latest record representing one of the fullest explorations of this new sideline sound to date. "Tanz 1 - Lieb" swells into life with an unresolved tension, redolent with the misty-eyed romanticism of proggy electro as it grows to a false climax like a perfect intro track should. "Tanz 2 - Grau" is instantly more stark in its floor-wrecking intent, dropping a bass-loaded 4/4 thump and jagged percussion that should delight all crossover clubbers - and "Tanz 3 - Hass" is no less unabashed in its feisty party intentions. "Tanz 4 - Hell" lets in a little of that chopped up soul that bleeds out of the Machinedrum productions, albeit stitched to a peak-time tech belter for the biggest dances.

  1. Aden - "Luft"
  2. Aden - "Whip"
  3. Creepy Autograph - "Mind Image Made"
  4. Creepy Autograph - "Back Ally"
Review: Jimmy Edgar's Ultramajic label reaches only it's second 12" and goes conceptual with the first in a series of Metaphysix releases; in Edgar's own words, "reality is based upon thought systems and this is the core of music and vibration, each chapter of the series we will give these ideas to the artists for them to interpret in any way they choose". The debut Metaphysix transmission sees two contributions each from Eden and Creepy Autograph, with the former elusive producer calling shotgun and gracing the A Side with a pair of dubby numbers that have apparently caught the ears of Scuba and Boys Noize. The bleep laden electro cut "Luft" is particularly ace. Down below Creepy Autpgraph resurface after a series of excellent releases on Valentine Connexion and show they've lost none of their class - the stripped back ghetto house of "Back Alley" is great!

We Can't Fly (remixes) (clear vinyl 12")

  1. We Can't Fly (Cassius remix)
  2. Caramellas (Joakim remix)
  3. Caramellas (Joakim dub)
Review: Aside from a few select remix commissions and monthly Soundcloud mixes, Vito Aeroplane has been largely absent this year, possibly holed up in the studio plotting how to follow We Can't Fly, his epically cast debut album. Whilst we await some new material form De Luca, Eskimo return to that debut for possibly the final time, electing to assign some French royalty the task of remixing the title track. Cassius are up first with a magnificent revision, stripping the track of its mid tempo Compass Point swagger in favour of an incendiary gospel house refrain that is fully dosed up on rave juice. Tigersushi boss Joakim is on inspired form too - as he always seems to be with remixes - with an equally anthemic take on the Aeroplane classic "Caramellas"!

  1. New York's Movin' (7:42)
  2. New York's Movin' (instrumental) (7:55)
Review: Big clappy hands, bigger vocals, even bigger groove; "New York's Moving" has been one of Danny Krivit's keystone selections since it was released in 1981 and it's not hard to see why... The guitar line glides from left to right, keeping the bold elements all in check: the lavish keys, the rolling percussion and the soul-churning vocals. Complete with full instrumental, there's heaps of fun to be had with this classic.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. One By One
  2. One By One (Rodion remix)
  3. Soter
  4. Soter (Red Axes remix)
Review: Italian duo Alien Alien have struck upon a canny intersection between coldwave synth allure and minimal dancefloor aesthetic that has already given rise to two choice releases. This time they're turning out the goods for Meant and it finds them in pure party rocking mode, channeling late night sleaze and the physical demands of the club into their creations to great effect. "One By One" stalks along on a steady pace largely defined by a hooky minor bassline, while a vocoder intones the titular message and odd synth squiggles add the colour. Rodion shapes the original into a more modern kind of tech-house burner without losing any of the poise of Alien Alien's version. "Soter" on the flip finds the pair in an equally sinister head space that makes great use of additional samples and another distinctive vocal hook to make the track bed in to your subconscious.

  1. African Man (Ricardo Vilalobos & Max Loderbauer remix) (12:12)
  2. Go Back (feat Damon Albarn - Fort Romeau Absolut remix) (5:50)
Review: Tony Allen's most recent long player, Film Of Life, is revisited here with both Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer, and rising house producer Fort Romeau tasked with remixing the Nigerian drummer's work. Vilod, as they are preferring to be called these days, sit up top with a typically long form take on "African Man" which reconstitutes the blaring horn funk of Allen's original piece into a subtle 12 minute reduction of electronic house music. On the flip Ghostly artist Fort Romeau reimagines the Damon Albarn featuring "Go Back" as whispy, deep house with some charming analogue synth flourishes.

  1. Cosmic Strings (7:06)
  2. Photon Visibility Function (7:14)
Review: Over the past few years, Mancunian production unit AnD have become some of the go-to producers for hard as nails techno, with searing releases on Repitch Recordings, Delsin offshoot Ann Aimee and Modal Analysis. Dark Matters represents a second 12" for Electric Deluxe, and is also effectively a marker for the duo's upcoming debut album on Speedy J's behemoth operation due later this month. Whilst it's impossible to foresee how Cosmic Microwave Background will sound as a whole, both "Cosmic Strings" and "Photon Visibility Function" suggests there will be some stylistic consistency with the bracing techno we have come to expect from AnD, with the former track a particularly brutal take no prisoners affair.

  3. Power Spectrum (O/H remix) (6:49)
Review: Electric Deluxe return to AnD's razor sharp debut album Cosmic Microwave Background for the first of two remix 12" releases. Given Speedy J's stature within the techno community, you'd expect a high profile cast of contributors for such an endeavour and Electric Deluxe do not disappoint. First up is Speedy J himself, teaming up with Strobo boss Lucy as Zeitgeber to rework ambient album closer "The Surface Of Last Scattering" into something a lot more bracing and intense. Still this pales in comparison to Sleeparchive's scorched earth rendition of "Power Spectrum" which will sate those in need of some hellish techno. The accompanying remix of the same track from Ontario Hospital is just as good but opts for a more broken feel.

Review: Originally released on Dance Mania in 1997, Chicago house legend Robert Armani's classic track "Arrow" finds itself the subject of a re-release on Chiwax's Classic Edition series alongside three other thumping tracks from the archive. ON the A-side "Muzik Man" pairs thumping kicks with detuned synthetic bass guitar textures in a classic ghetto house style, while the classic "Arrow" pares things down with its low slung, deep Chicago grooves. Flip mover for "Poison Mind", which offers a dubbier take on the Dance Mania template with swirling chords and abstract yelps circling above thunderclaps of analogue interference, while "The Power" pairs 90s house stabs with floor shaking beats to round off an essential record for Dance Mania enthusiasts.

Review: Overworld is key to the rise of Andras Fox this year, a soundtrack to a contemporary dance piece of the same name the Australian producer composed as A.R.T. Wilson and issued on limited cassette format and digitally back in April. Heavily new age in tone, the ten track composition was comparable to some of the early tapes issued on Mood Hut (think Jack Jutson's Mother Official). Due to popular demand the album has been licensed for a wider issue on vinyl by Growing Bag Records and the music eminently fits this new format. This edition features an alternate version of "Sarah's Theme (Air)" whilst the Sunday afternoon selectors out there will get plenty of mileage out of the sublime "Sun Sign Aries".

  2. S3A aka Sampling As An Art - "The Ravist"
  3. Jared Wilson - "You Get Down"
  4. Samuel Andre Madsen - "Waterwalking Paris"
Review: Concrete has been integral in the rebirth of Parisian clubbing culture, offering a unique 19 hour long party that begins early on Sunday and goes on and on in the picturesque setting of the Port De La Rapee on the River Seine. Looking to expand, this new Concrete Music label should operate as an extension of the party commencing with a series of three planned Textures releases inviting local talent and previous guests to contribute. Volume 1 inaugurates the label in style, brandishing original productions from the excellent Jared Wilson, Awanto 3 and Nsyde artist Samuel Andre Madsen as well as Parisian producer S3A (Sampling As An Art). "Sit On This" is a typically dusty slice of house from Awanto 3 which contrasts nicely with the percussion heavy classicist house of "The Ravist" by S3A and the deep acid of Jared Wilson. Madsen takes it deep and moody on "Waterwalking Paris" to end a superb and diverse debut release.

Review: A warm welcome back to Aussie funk/soul crew The Bamboos, who seem to have been off the radar since the release of 2010's Four. Here, they flip the script slightly on their fifth full-length proper for Tru Thoughts. While the rousing deep funk of old is still present, Lance Ferguson's crew have clearly broadened their horizons in the last two years. The result is their most attractive and well-rounded album to date. With regular vocalists and special guests (Aloe Blacc, most impressively) in tow, they dart attractively between dewy-eyed soul, Sly Stone-ish funk-rock (see "What I Know") and even country-tinged '60s soul groovery (the Tim Rodgers collab "I Got Burned").
