  2. Kamran Sadeghi - "Amber Alert" (6:49)
  3. De Walta - "Pin Tweaks" (11:53)
Review: Dewalta's Meander imprint has been particularly impressive in recent times, with hot releases from the creme de la creme in minimal techno. Celebrating a decade in the business, the label presents the third edition of Family Jubilee which features a reinvigorated Konrad Black. The Canadian is creating some his best music in years, as heard on the PAN-ish experimental bass of "Snake Charmers" where he's still pursuing a similar style to that of his Scorched Earth EP which appeared on the label back in 2015. New York City tech house hero (and one third of Soundwalk Collective) Kamran Sadeghi presents the slinky groove of "Amber Alert" that is full of the same hypnotic polyrhythms as heard on his Astral Body EP for label last year. De Walta himself gives us the eerie minimal futurism of "Pin Tweaks" which is a perfect closer for this fine EP.

Multi-function rhythm machine
Notes: The ultimate drum sound, anytime and anywhere! Numerous rhythm patterns built into a practical interface! The new KR-55 Pro is a multi-function rhythm machine that's also equipped with mixer/recorder functionality.

Experience the same musical support as if a pro drummer were sitting in on your session. The KR-55 Pro gives you an easy way to enjoy jam sessions with the backing of real drum/percussion sounds. It provides a rich variety of input jacks, mixer functionality, effects, and equalizer, as well as a versatile recorder that can record to an SD card. The intuitive interface means that there's no need for complex programming. Battery-powered operation allows complete mobility from desktop to street performances, or use in a variety of situations including live events in small spaces.

Drum/percussion sound that overturns your concept of a rhythm machine:

The KR-55 Pro features "Real Groove Technology" which uses data recorded from actual professional musicians performing at various tempi, and is a completely different technology than conventional rhythm machines. There is a total of 24 high-quality rhythm styles, each fine-tuned to provide the best possible feel, to accurately reproduce the experience of playing with a percussionist. The sounds, grooves, and phrases will play back at pristine quality even if you change the tempo, so you can enjoy playing serious jam sessions at your own pace.

Use the chain function to easily create sophisticated rhythm tracks:

Each rhythm style includes a wide variety of patterns: two variations in addition to basic, fill-in 1, and fill-in 2. This means that the KR-55 Pro can provide the accompaniment for an entire song. By using the chain function, which lets you put together and memorize a different rhythm style for each measure, you can freely create even complex rhythm tracks. Up to 30 banks of chains can be stored, and each chain can be up to 999 measures long.

A rich array of input jacks and full-fledged mixer functionality:

The KR-55 Pro provides a rich array of input jacks that accommodate a variety of instruments: a guitar or bass can be connected to INPUT 1/2, and the XLR jack accepts a mic input. You can let the KR-55 Pro take care of the rhythm, and enjoy a full-band performance with guitar, bass, and vocals. A reverb effect can be applied to each input source, and TREBLE and BASS equalizer are also provided so that you can shape your sound in detail. The AUX INPUT supports stereo, and can be connected to a digital audio player, a keyboard, or an effect unit that's equipped with stereo output. Together, they allow you to use up to four channels.

Versatile recording functionality that supports multi-track recording:

In addition to built-in rhythm styles, the KR-55 Pro is equipped with a versatile recorder function that can record a variety of input sources. You can record your own performances along with the built-in rhythm styles, a favourite song, or karaoke tracks that you created on your DAW. The recorded data can be exported as a WAV file to an SD card, so the KR-55 Pro is all you need to create widely-usable tracks. You can also multitrack-record your guitar and bass to produce more complex tracks. Also provided are editing functions such as undo/redo and punch-in, and you can also place markers at the desired location of the recorded data, and overdub while looping the playback.

Player function can play back audio files from an SD card:

The KR-55 Pro is equipped with an audio player function that can play back audio files (wav) from an SD card. You can take advantage of Acoustage and use this unit as a high-quality listening system, or prepare backing tracks for you to play along with. There's also a playlist function (10 banks) that lets you manage the file playback order of up to 24 songs, so you can play back songs in a desired order for your live performance. In addition, the playback speed can be adjusted in the range of -25% to +25%, and you can also make files play repeatedly or automatically in succession. Whether you're practicing at home or performing in front of an audience, the KR-55 Pro is packed with functions that will be useful in various situations.

Tuner and metronome functions with a large and easily readable meter:

A tuner with the high precision that you expect from KORG is built in. When you turn this function on, the rhythm style buttons become a tuning meter, allowing you to tune with a large and easily visible meter. You can also tune while listening to a guitar, bass, or piano guide tone, or sound a metronome for convenient practicing.

This new minilogue has a unique polished grey colour that reflects beautifully in various lighting, ranging from silver, to dark gray, to black.

The original minilogue received the internationally prestigious German "Red Dot Award" given to products that demonstrate excellent industrial design. This limited-edition model gives the original a new colour panel and a see-through black finish on the wooden rear panel as well, with a cool and distinctive appearance that will be recognizable at a glance.

Minilogue's newly developed analogue synthesiser circuit delivers polyphony and full programmability at a great price --- exactly what today's musician needs. With the minilogue, you can get your hands on the powerful sound that's only possible with real analogue, and find inspiration with features including a polyphonic step and motion sequencer, on board tape-style delay, multiple sound shaping and filter options, and an oscilloscope display. All of these seamlessly integrated features make minilogue as fun and easy to use as it is powerful. It's the next-generation analogue synthesiser for musicians of all types.

True analogue sound:

The synth circuits for minilogue are all new ground up designs, delivering a synthesiser experience like no other. Unprecedented in this class, it's a four-voice polyphonic true-analogue synth with an interface that's designed for accessibility. Whether you're performing live or producing in the studio, the minilogue is the fastest way for the user to explore and implement real analog synthesis in any situation.

The structure consists of 2VCO, 1VCF, 2EG, 1VCA, and 1LFO. The minilogue's unique wave shape capability lets you fine tune the oscillators' harmonics, creating the most divine sounds and compositions. The minilogue is also equipped with a variety of powerful types of modulation including cross modulation, oscillator sync, and ring modulator, as well as a delay with a high-pass filter. Powerful sound creation and rich variety are the true hallmarks of an analogue synthesiser.

Polyphony and Presets - Perfect:

minilogue goes beyond analogue synths in its price range by adding 200 preset locations. Select a program for instant access to great sounds - - ranging from thick basses to deep pads to brilliant polyphonic leads and atmospheric sounds. No need to have deep synthesis knowledge; just choose a sound and tweak - a workflow that is very familiar with musicians today. For those who want to dive deeper into the heart and soul of minilogue's engine, the minilogue hold 200 programs; with 100 editable factory programs included, and 100 locations serving as blank canvases on which to create your next analogue masterpiece. Each preset can also hold a step sequence and delay settings along with the sounds you create.

Voice modes:

Selectable voice modes let you freely configure the four voices for performance. The voices can be set to four note polyphony for chords or layered for thick basses and leads. Other modes cover a range of sounds from octave shifted bass explosions to delicately staggered layered triggering.

16-step sequencer:

Get creative with the intuitive 16-step sequencer with motion sequence recording capabilities, and make your sound truly come to life. The minilogue provides real-time recording with overdubbing, and step recording that lets you record simply by consecutively specifying notes, giving you a great way to create phrases and performances.

Oscilloscope visualizes the sound:

The OLED display will show the waveform as you sculpt your sound. Visual feedback is both educational and entertaining, and represents a first on a hardware synthesiser.

Build quality:

The uniquely curved, sand-blasted 2mm aluminium front panel, metal shaft potentiometers, solid, chassis-mounted metal shaft potentiometers and rubber-coated knobs give the roadworthy minilogue a standout look and feel to complement its powerful and dynamic sound creation capabilities.

Sync with groove machine:

In addition to the standard MIDI connectors, the minilogue provides a sync connector that can be easily connected to Korg's groove machines. Connect this to a volca series unit, an Electribe, or the SQ-1, and experience a session with synchronized sequencer playback.

Review: Casa Voyager's second release comes courtesy of Kosh, a producer who debuted on the label's previous, compilation style 12". The '80s electro revivalist kicks things off with "Catch the Train", where ghostly, Kraftwerk style synth melodies and punchy vocal samples cluster around a Drexciya style rhythm track, before wrapping spacey, Motor City style electronics in crunchy breakbeats on "Null 212". B-side opener "Electronic Setups" is a drifting, intergalactic and evocative shuffle through deep electro pastures, while "Bug in the System" combines snappy electro beats and squeezable acid bass with the kind of beguiling, almost melancholic chords more often found in early '90s ambient records.

Review: Legendary musician, DJ and broadcaster Philippe Krootchey was a hugely influential creative whirlwind throughout the 70s and 80s in France. Founder of Love International, frequent Casablanca collaborator with the likes of Lizzy Mercier Descloux and Mathematiques Modernes and an active member of France's foremost gay rights groups, his political and creative messages were clear in every action he made. Originally released in 1984, "Qu'est Ce Qu'il" carries a strong anti-racial message with humour that worked so well he re-sang it English and it eventually became "Whatazzy". Flip for "Hot Voodoo Dub" to find his creative messages as a studiosmith were also very clear.

  4. Smallpeople - "Cricket Orchestra" (4:50)
Review:  As you might expect, there's plenty to enjoy on FourtyFour Ways, the first of a number of EPs celebrating the German deep house imprint's tenth anniversary. Studio Barnhaus co-founder and recent Numbers artist Kornel Kovacs leads the way with "Space Jam", a decidedly cosmic chunk of intergalactic deep house that comes laden with shimmering synthesizers, echo-heavy R&B vocal samples and a killer US garage style bassline. Elsewhere, Smallpeople attempt to out-deep the competition with the deliciously dreamy "Cricket Orchestra", Juniper doffs a cap to classic Detroit techno on the sci-fi throbber "Variations In Grey", and L'Amour Fou drop a sprightly chunk of soft focus positivity with the ricocheting drum machine hits, eyes-closed melodies and booming acid bass of "Da'an".

  1. BC I Want To (5:43)
  2. Know What (5:06)
  3. In Flight (6:22)
Review: After the launch of her own label, Frizner Electric, LADYMONIX takes another step forward with her debut release. The opener & title track Bc I Want To is a deep and sensual body mover, anchored by empowering vocal samples that make no apologies. The mood cascades from curiosity into downright permission. Know What then takes over with a potent house beat and more strapping vocal cuts. The temper of this track begins liberating and lush, spiraling into a mirage of uplifting sounds for the final 3 minutes. Tying the threads of the EP into a final knot is In Flight, a soaring track that blends the energy of an evening into the power of the night. Charming and eccentric beats run smoothly from takeoff to landing, making for a steadily blissful atmosphere. Overall, Bc I Want To is a divisive house recording that can be admired from the dancefloor & from the bedroom alike.

It's a collection of songs performed and produced by the Chicago born, sometimes Brazil-residing artist - all compiled from seven albums he made over the last several years, but never made the effort to actually release. With its title taken from the mantra he repeats across several tracks, Downtown Castles Can Never Block The Sun is 'avant-garde Americana' at its finest by a talented musician that has previously worked with the likes of legends Mark Pritchard, Theo Parrish, Wajeed and Steve Spacek. Released via local imprint International Anthem: a recording company that produces and promotes progressive media.

Soul
  1. Lou Lawton - "Knick Knack Patty Wack" (2:51)
  2. Walter Wilson - "Love Keeps Me Crying" (2:33)
Review: For their latest trawl into the world of rare soul and funk, Outta Sight has decided to reissue Lou Lawton's brilliant "Knick Knack Patty Wack", a punchy, horn-heavy and occasionally stomping 1967 cut that regularly changes hands for eye-watering sums online. Part of the appeal to collectors and DJs is the track's association with the British northern soul scene. The same could be said of Walter Wilson's "Love Keeps Me Crying", another 1967 recording that was only ever released in limited quantities as a "promo-only" 7" single. While not as sought-after as the Lou Lawton track on the A-side, its every bit as cheery and life affirming (despite the presence of rather melancholy lyrics above the driving Motor City production).

  5. Apollo (6:49)
  6. Mine (3:55)
Review: Icelandic producer Felix Leifur made a big impression with his first EP for Dirt Crew, last year's The Sunday Club. This action-packed follow-up is, if anything, even more impressive. Over the course of six dusty, head-in-the-clouds cuts, you'll find skewed, effects-laden drums (think Theo Parrish crossed with Chaos In The CBD), alien chords, punchy jazz samples, J Dilla influences, sweaty percussive build-ups, fluid jazz-funk instrumentation, twisted R&B vocal cut-ups, and a serious amount of tape hiss. The result is a collection of tracks that shimmies between loose and groovy deep house, instrumental hip-hop goodness, and club-ready jazz-house heaviness. In other words, it's pretty darn tasty.

  1. Never The Same (6:27)
  2. Energize (5:57)
  3. Basiel (6:23)
Review: Following her breakthrough year in 2017, Amelie Lens has been surprisingly quiet on the production front. In fact, this is the Belgian's first solo EP of 2018. It is jam-packed with high-grade dancefloor material, beginning with the mind-altering techno-jack of A-side "Never The Same", where intense acid lines and matter-or-fact spoken word snippets ride a thunderous groove. Lens keeps up the pressure on side B, where the functional techno slammer "Energize" - a rhythmic beast full of ricocheting vocal samples and drum machine handclap fills - is followed by the rave-friendly angular techno-funk of "Basiel".

  1. Cali 76 (6:31)
  2. Pays To Be Pushed (5:24)
Review: For the latest release on his constantly impressive Apron imprint, Stevie "Funkineven" Julien has looked to Bristol for inspiration. Lend Me Your Ears marks the debut of new production twosome LMYE, a mysterious collaboration between two people that met at the city's record store Idle Hands. They start with "Cali 76", an intriguing fusion of techno kicks, wonderfully loose percussion, woozy guitar samples and dashing Rhodes notes. They push things up a notch on "Pays To Be Pushed", where exotic sitar lines and dreamy pads ride bumpin', garage influenced grooves. Interestingly, both cuts are notably different from either producer's solo work, making it harder to easily guess their identities.

  1. Pulsar (7:43)
  2. Oedo 808 (5:32)
  3. Blue Moon Tree (7:54)
Review: Lone is in a glassy-eyed and loved-up mood on this fourth instalment in his excellent "Ambivert Tools" series on R&S. We're particularly enjoying the lilting, soft-focus dreaminess of A-side "Pulsar", where swelling chords and poignant synth-strings sashay seductively between a densely layered, mid-tempo breakbeat groove. The long-serving producer ratchets up the energy on low-slung electro flipside "Oedo 808", another largely dreamy affair that boasts the twin attractions of raw acid style bass and ear-catching TR-808 drum machine cowbells. To finish things off, Lone serves up the EP's most blissfully loved-up moment, "Blue Moon Tree", whose bouncy pianos, fluttering vocal samples and languid chords sound like they were tailor-made for sunrise.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Open Door (11:32)
  2. 00000000 (18:45)
Review: Over the last two decades, few minimal house producers have amassed quite as impressive a body of work as Losoul, AKA German veteran Peter Kremeier. His vast discography contains all manner of hypnotic, locked-in classics, not least the trippy and funk-fuelled "Open Door". It was the producer's debut single way back in 1996 (the first of many on legendary imprint Playhouse) and still sounds suitably current all these years on. This reissue replicates the original track list, pairing the tough, loop-propelled disco-house/techno fusion of "Open Door" with the wonkier "00000000", a typically hypnotic and spaced-out affair in which Kremeier contrasts Clavinet and flute style loops with dubbed-out synth hits and a deliciously sparse-but-heavy groove.
