Review: With releases on Deepermotions, Rush Hour and Hometaping is Killing Music, Dutch producer Simon Weiss has established a reputation for combining a deep understanding of dancefloor dynamics with a sci-fi inspired futurist aesthetic. Back in 2015, he delivered his first EP for Tom Trago's Voyage Direct. It was 'an impressively intergalactic affair, full of supersonic synthesizer arpeggio lines, Motor City influences and robotic drum machine hits.' Two years since, he is back with the fabulous You Want A Cigarette EP. The dirty retro acid of "Brain Fever" has that distinct glide of the little silver Roland box, accompanied by classic vocoder and neon lit synths. Not forgetting the title track, which nails that good 'ol fashion Underground Resistance styled hi-tech soul to convincing effect.

  1. K15 - "Love's Gambit" (4:40)
  2. Wu15 - "Space & Time" (2:18)
  3. Wu15 - "The Anthem" (5:04)
  4. Henry Wu - "Shahada" (2:53)
Review: It was only a matter of time before Henry Wu and K15 would link up with London's Eglo, and their respective prior releases for the likes of Wild Oats, Rhythm Section and 22a have earned them a spot in one of the finest house and broken beat labels around. "Love's Gambit" is a perfect example of the latter genre, a sublime blend of jazzy percussion swings and smooth melodic drifts, followed by the even more soulful bounces of the gentle "Space & Time" - one for the jazz fusion heads! "The Anthem" heads towards more housey spheres thanks to its stable beat pattern - it-s an absolute peach of a tune, by the way - but it's "Shahada" that governs the dancefloor with its rough MPC drum programming and finger-licking synth rotations. A beautiful and fitting addition to the catalogue.

  1. Island Breeze (3:42)
  2. Caravan (4:20)
  3. The Odyssey (3:32)
  4. Caravan Revisited (4:20)
Review: The latest volume in Music From Memory's impressive 12" series of reissued obscurities takes us back to late '80s St Louis and the hard to find world of Workdub. Formed of Virgil Work Jnr. and Nicholas Georgieff, Workdub's output was restricted to a pair of highly limited albums recorded between 1989 and 1992. All four tracks are taken from these two albums, and offer a lucid, ear-catching fusion of early ambient house electronics, experimental oriental synth-pop, alien jazz breaks, spacey Detroit influences, and stuttering drum machine rhythms. It's a hard-to-place but wonderfully evocative mixture, arguably best displayed on standout opener "Island Breeze". That said, the curiously Balearic, Tangerine Dream influenced "Caravan" is rather tasty, too, while its' ambient alternative mix, "Caravan Revisited" is almost overpowering in its' simple beauty.

Experimental/Electronic
  1. With Any Future
  2. Missing Us
  3. Missing Us (dub)
Review: Marking the start of an exciting new collaborative project, Wolf + Lamb proudly share the debut release of The Waves & Us. Formed out of
a creative meeting of minds between Maayan Nidam, Markus Nikolaus and Louis McGuire, theirs is a sound that strengthens the storied
approach of a live band with the experimental thrust of analogue electronics. Pop and rock fundamentals lend an earthly hook to the
tracks, but these are anything but straight-forward songs.
Maayan has already forged a formidable career in electronic music, both under her own name and as part of Mara Trax, scoring releases
on such celebrated labels as Perlon. Markus performs his own solo project Cunt Cunt Chanel, while Louis is part of Ballet School, a band
releasing on noted indie label Bella Union. The whirlwind of creativity that has whipped up around the trio has yielded an album which will
follow this single, made up of one-take recordings that capture the energy and adventure that powers The Waves & Us.
Maayan's electronics provide the atmospheric backdrop to the songs, running modular synthesisers and drum machines through detailed
chains of processing and effects with an emphasis on a warm, charmingly rough finish. Markus' guitar undergoes a similar fuzzy treatment
while his voice calls out introspective, abstract lyrics to set the mind racing. Louis' bass underpins the music with a dubby sensibility,
bringing a necessary balance to the frequency range.
Making the most of their in-the-room recording approach, the singles will feature alternative takes of the songs that will appear on the
album, providing a little insight into the flutters and fluctuations that shape the development of this project. With their eyes fixed on live
performances and an arresting sound already formed, this is a vital time for all three artists and the people that listen to them.

  1. Dorphin (5:16)
  2. Dexed (4:40)
  3. Dugong (5:29)
Review: The mysterious Wilson Phoenix returns with another batch of muscular techno joints that'll wipe the floor with any half-hearted 4/4 pretenders. Considering how sought after his earlier releases are, don't expect this to hang around for long. The beastly 909 kicks on "Dorphin" would slot in perfectly with Head Front Panel's own blown out take on peak time rabble rousing techno, while the kick-clap sync on "Dexed" will get fists a-shaking. It's not all blunt drums though - there's plenty of peppy colour splashed all over this record to make it stand out from the crowd. This ain't no monochrome chugging business!

  1. Why I Came To California (4:09)
  2. Rockin' You Eternally (4:19)
Review: Released in celebration of Expansion's recent re-serving of two of Leon's early 80s albums - Rockin' You Eternally and Leon Ware - here's a delightful 45 that reminds us of his finest solo moments. "Why I Came To California" is a sun-kissed soul boogie groove with big horns and even bigger chorus. "Rockin' You Eternally" (which is, let's face it, one of the smoothest song titles to ever come from the 80s) showcases Leon's softer side. A ballad steeped in sentiment, play this loud enough and everyone in a five mile radius will stop and get smoochy.

Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Wailing Souls - "Who No Waan Come" (6:06)
  2. Al Campbell - "Unfaithful Children" (4:32)
Review: The seemingly bottomless Greensleeves vaults turn up more gold here with two prime cuts - Wailing Souls' "Who No Waan Come" and Al Campbell's "Unfaithful Children" - that are treated to a first new pressing since 1981. "Who No Waan Come" is silky and sedentary as they come, with kick drums just about managing to propel things along beneath gorgeous doo-wop harmonies. The Linval Thompson produced "Unfaithful Children", however, is a more driven affair with authentic roots. Psyched-out effects, endless reverb and hits that ricochet around, making it a widescreen dub that draws you in and takes you along for the ride.

Review: Editorial Records return with more disco infused flavours from around the world. These four nice and slow re-edits are sure fire weapons for any disco DJs crate. Ed Wizard and Disco Double Dee take on Brass Construction much like Venus did on Sunshine People 15 years ago for another nice re edit. Matt Hughes' "Sunshine" is an equally good effort; wait for the drop! "Pimp Talk" by The Owl retains the sleazy grooves of the original and Rahaan's take on fine boogie workout 'Feeling Fine' does the business, as always.

  2. More Music (5:23)
Review: Keeping up with Rene "Shed" Pawlowitz's many aliases is almost a full-time job in itself. Here, he dons the WK7 guise last used in 2012 for an EP that happily joins the dots between the sensual shuffle of house, and the rigid thump of techno. A-side "Washer" leads the way, with curious synth refrains and off-kilter electronics riding a delightfully bumpin', extra-percussive, 125 BPM groove. Flipside "More Music" successfully doffs a cap to vintage US and UK garage - feel the swing of those beats, with the added intensity of his usual techno kicks - with warm chords and vocal samples emphasizing the classic inspirations.

  4. Dakini9 - "Limbic Resonance" (6:15)
Review: The Sound Warrior label focusses on releasing music by female house and techno producers, an extended collection of women who share a similar vision of dance music. The label is run by Jenifa Mayanja and Dakini 9 - the latter being part of NY's Plan B imprint alongside DJ Spider - and the girls are back with two new faces for the label's fourth outing. Daniela La Luz's "Milkus" is a mid-tempo chugger with evil percussion and a funky chord hook, while "The Only" by Whim EE is darker, more deranged and of a lo-fi nature. On the flip, Mayanja's "Night Walker" is a tribal affair with a deep, growling bassline and "Limbic Resonance" by Dakini 9 is the hardest cut of them all, the certified techno head-nodder among the deeper tracks. Tough.
