Italian Girl Singers Of The 1960s compilation CD. Brunetta's 'Baluba Shake' has big and cavernous drums, plucked guitar riffs and rollicking great chords next to lung-busting vocals. It's a real dancer. Things get more impassioned on the high speed funk chase that is Rita Pavone's 'Il Geghege.'

Review: Stand by for the much anticipated follow up to the unreleased Ronn Colbert 7" on this label earlier in the year. "Just One Kiss Away" is an ultra rare soul stepper from 1981. It finds Ronn and Selah Colbert go up against one another, and both serve up super sultry, seductive vocals that tease and please. Add in steamy chords and soaring strings and you have one helluva smoocher. "Tell Me What I Wanna Hear" is another romantic to and fro between the pair, with a little more tension and build in the rhythm edition that adds an extra element of spice. Both are sure to become re-found classics.

Review: This unique 7" features two different artists - Raye Cole and Rachel Maxann - doing their own renditions of the same song, in this instance, 'Find Myself Another Man'. These versions bring a modern twist to a rhythm and blues banger that will transport you back to the good old days, Raye's version adding a bit more of a hop to it while Rachel's version has a garage band and surf rock tinge to it. Review: Another mighty fine reissue here from the masters of just that in the Original Gravity label. It features distorted organ loveliness here that continues with their practice of putting out new music in the style of old soul 7"s. On this split-flip 45, two of the most eminent soul vocalists out today share a side each. St. Louis singer Raye Cole helms the A-side, with her energetic number 'You Gotta Set Me Free' stomping on forward with a shaker-clapping, horn-heavy blues swing. Rachel Maxann - perhaps another alias similar to Nestor Alvarez - brings up the B on a finger-clicking alternate take on 'You Gotta Set Me Free'.

Review: This Japanese import on Vortex Records offers a brilliant disco-reggae version of a classic tune by Dean Fraser & Robert "Dubwise" Browne. 'Mister Magic' is a mid-paced chugger with oodles of reverb and bass so funky it will tie you in knots. The acoustic guitar melodies are warm and slide up and down the scale and big horns add flesh and fun. On the flip it is dubbed out to the max, with endless hissing hi-hat tails and mind-melting bass but the same sense of playful and bubbling funk. A real scorcher for sure.

Review: Soul Supreme is a master keyboardist best known for his covers of classic hip-hop songs by the likes of Mos Def, MF Doom and A Tribe Called Quest. Here side-steps his covers duties to handle remix productions for two of his contemporaries in the Netherlands neo-soul scene - Gallowstreet, LYMA, Shamis and Rebiere. The A side lends a wonky future house feel (a-la GoldLink, Crackazat) to '52 North', Gallowstreet's ode to the city of Amsterdam. The B tune strips it back to a lo-fi soul bapper, fleshing out its theme of loneliness in parenting.

Review: Dennis Brown's 'Love Has Found Its Way' is the subject of this super cover version on Vortex out of Japan. It is Maya Hatch and Robert Dubwise Brownie who are behind it and they bring lush lovers rock vibes and rolling reggae to their unique interpretation. Hayassen is the producer and the a-side version is awash with island chords that ring out over a clam sea and sundown. The fleshy bass and wiggling percussion ensure some nice dancing vibes next to the romantic vocals and the dub side on the flip closes out this crucial import in style.

Review: Dave Welding's Soul Junction has another great package here from The Hill District. This was a group of working musicians that was initially assembled by bassist Walter "Sonny" Hughes who was impressed with them after seeing them rehearse one afternoon. They only ever managed to record one 45, however, and it is this one, and it has overmuch remained hard to find over the years. Hill District's 'You're Scared Of Falling In Love' is glorious sunny and carefree soul with gentle rhythms and great vocal work. Richie Merrett then steps up on the flip with 'You'll Always Have Yesterday Standing By' which is much more verily sentimental and pained.

Review: Athens Of The North will always be one of our favourite labels no matter what they're serving up. The Edinburgh-based deep diggers this time look to Race 'N Rhythm, which was once upon a time a 12-member jazz group based in Oakland. Jazz-master Rudolph Peters managed the multi-racial band and though they were admired on the vocal live circuit they only ever released one single before later doing an album. 'Space Saver' was recorded in California in 1982 and is a sultry and romantic soul sound with leads and coy rhythms. 'Candybar Superstar' on the backside is a pure fire dancefloor heater with high-energy claps, horns and vocals.

'Step Inside My World' by The Reason Why - an incredibly obscure band releasing with Polydor originally in 1977 - is an excellent modern soul mid-tempo dancer, having remained in hot demand for many years thanks to its sensitive recording and lyrical matter. Review: 'Free Your Mind' is a rare and sought-after funk single from 1979, originally released on the obscure Gem City label. Though this debut was their only proper release, Record Player were a humungous supergroup from Dayton, Ohio, with over fifteen members exiting and entering their collective revolving door over the course of their active period. It's clear that the single's first reissue back in 2006 (via Soul Cal) wasn't sufficient for the most avid diggers out there, so now Fraternity/Und Brother team up again for round two, again backing up the song with the sultry wish-fulfiller 'Your Fantasy'.

Review: Four years on from his last outing, veteran Swedish beatsmith Red Astaire is back doing what he does best. Much of the producer's best work has been in an illicit rework/bootleg remix vein, and this is no different. It features defiant new vocals from chanteuse Coco Rouzier over backing tracks built around chunks of vintage rare groove and two-step soul treats. Choose between "Resque Me" [sic], where Rouzier's sweet, compassionate and emotion-rich vocals seemingly float above a languid, jazz-fuelled groove and drifting trumpets, and the jauntier "Reaching Out To You". This super-sweet concoction sees Rouzier in bolder and breezier mode, singing songs of love over rising horns and a groovy backing track. It sounds like a sunshine anthem in waiting.

Review: Reggie Soul And The Soul Swingers dropped their soul classic 'My World Of Ecstasy' back in 1969 on the Capri Records label. It is a cult and highly sought-after gem even all these decades later and there is currently just one second hand copy to be found and it will cost you almost four figures to own. Or you could buy this reissue on Soul Junction which is also backed with the raw and guttural 'Might Good Loving'. It hits hard, at high speed, with frantic drums and horns. 'My World Of Ecstasy' meanwhile is more sedate, with fluttery jazz melodies and gentle drums, great harmonies and a smoky lead.

Review: Although the Australian outfit Regime roots are in revivalist funk, 'Never Gonna Stop' sees them turn their hands to warm, loved-up and sun-kissed soul of the kind that was once all the rage in the mid 1970s. The grooves are toasty, the male and female lead vocals effortlessly soulful, and the instrumental touches - think languid jazz guitar solos, sweeping strings and lazy, trumpet-heavy horn arrangements - little less than superb. Flipside 'Deuzy Vibe', a P-funk flavoured, turn-of-the-80s boogie-soul style affair, is almost as good. There aren't that many of these -vinyl 45s around, so buy now to avoid disappointment.

Review: Renaldo Domino has nothing to do with the pizza chain, of course - in fact, he was so named because his voice was sweet as sugar (Domino is an American sugar brand, if you didn't know.) He had a very short but sweet - pun intended - a career that saw him drop tunes on Mercury subsidiaries Smash and Blue Rock, and later Twinight records. They managed to make an impact and for that reason, he was inspired to get back to making new music in 2019. 'I'm Hip To Your Game' was his first single and one that was soon re-recorded for a second release - it's deep and warm with lavish strings where the A-side has a swinging Northern Soul vibe.

Review: Athens Of The North represent one of Australia's finest soul exponents Renee Geyer. "Be There In The Morning" comes in two forms... The 1977 version will be recognised from her most successful album of the time Moving Along. An upbeat fusion of soul and funk with mild disco nuances, it comes with confident orchestration and an instantly infectious, ultimately emphatic chorus. The real coup here, however, is the softer, dreamier earlier version that's so rare it never left the confines of her native country. It's digging like this that makes the young-but-hugely-potential rare music label Athens Of The North a very exciting prospect for record collectors.

Review: With their second bit of splendid new music, The Revues once again explore the areas where Tejano music, Latin soul and funk all intersect. Review: Now reissued on Epsilon - way after its initial 1976 release on the obscure Indianapolis, Indiana-based Lulu Records - 'Put A Smile On Time' is the second-ever single to have been released by short-lived 70s soul outfit Rhythm Machine. The combined talents of Donald Harris, James Boone, Maurice Puckett and Robert Dycus are heard once more, in fully-remastered glory no less. The title track (reshuffled onto the A-side here, after it was formerly released on the B) is a soft, rimshotting, lively funk number, replete with unctuous rhythm guitars and rapturous vocal highs. 'Can't Do Without You' is similar, presenting an intriguing lyrical conundrum: no matter how you treat this singer, it'd make to difference: he simply can't do without the object of his affections.

Review: Carrie Riley & The Fascinations are one of those mythologised outfits who released only one single, but who really nailed that one single. The year of origin is unknown but now the Symphonical Records label that is dedicated to reviving and releasing unissued cuts from often forgotten artists of colour now puts it back on the map. 'Super Cool' is indeed ice cold. The sultry trumpets and low slung bass roll deep and the heart aching vocal is soul perfection. Review: Legendary 70s funk band Ripple are back with two original members making new music again. Curtis "Kazoo" Reynolds & Keith "Doc" Samuels now go by the name of Ripple 2.20 and their first work is a new version of John Edwards' "Exercise My Love." It is a cover, but not as we usually know it - they lay down an incredible new vocal and play the parts with a real sense of sensuousness. On the flip is a new remix of some of Ripple's original material in the form of Fashion's take on "I Don't Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky", a raw, dirty, sleazy jam to get you in a sweat.

Review: The Ritz Band are a shockingly obscure soul band from Charleston, West Virginia - once locally famous for their hosting of the local Ritz nightclub in the city. 'I Should Have Known' is the product of one of the few efforts by the establishment to release music of their own; with a constantly rotating roster of musicians, this iteration of the band hears Raye Smith on vocals - the rest has been lost to history. Review: Athens Of The North has never been shy in putting out music. The label is always working on a wealth of different projects it seems and this month drops a couple of very tasty - as per usual - 7"s. Rivage was a leading band in the 70s modern soul scene and one long loved by the Athens label head. He put out a first-ever reissue of their Sit-in On It LP last year and now serves up some of the singles from it, namely the flute-led joy of 'Strung Out On Your Love' and 'All My Love For You,' a comforting soul tune with swirling grooves and classic falsetto vocals. Review: A year after putting out the exceptional full-length Sittin On It by Rivage Athens of the North revisits the album to pluck some stellar singles from it. There are two such 7"s out this month, and this one opens on 'I Need You Baby.' The simple title is the mona vocal hook of this lush and lux disco swirling, with soul to dare. The flip side is 'Answer,' a more prickly beat with funky guitar and meandering synths that are all finished off in style by another of those heart-felt vocals up top. These are glorious tunes for grown-up dance floors.

Review: Through his solo releases and work with Leon Ware, Richard Evans and Skip Scarborough, Rockie Robbins became one of American soul's most celebrated artists and producers in the early 1980s. This year's he's set to release his first album of note since 1985, with these two cuts offering a taste of what's to come. Interestingly, "Good Life" sounds a little like it could have been written and produced in the 1980s, even if the mixing, mastering and lilt in Robbins' voice reflect its contemporary status. Either way, it's warm, positive and comes blessed with a wonderfully strong chorus. "Let's Groove", meanwhile, is a little deeper and more loved-up, perfectly reflecting that side of Robbins' 1980s output.

The first remained her best, though, and two tunes from it make up this hot new 7" on Dynamite. It's the title track that goes first and is an uplifting and life-affirming soul-jazz jam with busy drumming, hectic chord work and a fantastic lead guitar that brings the Balearic vibes. Things slow down on the flip with the more sentimental and noodling jazz-funk bass and laidback grooves of 'The River Must Flow.'

After their fuzzy lovers rock outing last time out, here they head off into space with more cosmic and zoned out sounds full of intimate and slo mo grooves. Review: Somehow what we have here is a lost MPB gem, but from rural Finland. This is a first-ever reissue of it, 33 years after it was first released by the Brazilian pair of Rosanna Guimaraes Tavares and Zelia Nogueira da Fonseca aka Rosanna & Zelia. They left their home in Latin America in 1988 and headed to Europe where they dropped a wealth of albums in Germany into the mid-2000s. Zelia still make music and the pair sang on a house cut by German mainstay Ian Pooley. They wrote this one while on a short trip to Finland for the local label Maumau Music and it got a regional release at the time - and now makes it onto the world stage.

Vocalist and actress Roz Ryan recorded them with producers Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore in 1980, during a spell in Broadway musical Ain't Misbehavin'. They were destined for a six-track album that was sadly never released. A-side "Keep Shining" is a killer chunk of sing-along jazz-funk/disco/boogie fusion, full of sprightly P-funk synths and punchy horns. Flipside "Put Love Back", on the other hand, is a slow burning delight: a wonderful chunk of boogie-era late night soul shot through with heartbroken emotion. Both tracks are brilliant, in other words.

Review: The Roz Ryan studio real reissue series hits a third and final instalment here. This one is another superb piece of previously unissued 2 step soul that will pirouette its way into your heart. It was discovered in 1980 and produced by the mighty Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey. First up is 'Love Changes' which was also covered by O.C Smith and is a slow and sultry number with buttery but poignant lyrics. Flip it over for the more upbeat, driving and dancefloor ready number that is 'Funky Way To Treat Me' with a production that heightens all the lush disco elements.

Review: There's a pleasing "going back to his roots" feel about this release from Bristol luminary Rob Smith AKA RSD. Unlike much of the material he's released under the alias, which draws on dub, hip-hop and dubstep for inspiration, this seven-inch recalls the early days of the "Bristol sound", where Smith and Ray Mighty were responsible for producing tons of classic street soul-informed fare. Denise Morgan delivers a superbly soulful, glassy-eyed rendition of Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together' atop an attractive, turn-of-the-90s style street soul beat rich in classic hip-hop breaks, fluid piano and stirring synth strings. The accompanying 'Let's Dub Together' version, a more stripped-back and sub-heavy affair rich in reverb-laden vocal snippets, is equally as inspired.

Review: On Discs Of Fun & Love's fourth release, the crate-digging imprint has dipped its toes into the wonderful world of gospel for the very first time. The songs are taken from Rubenstein "Ruby" McClure's notoriously hard to find sole solo album, "Rubenstein", and their reissue is sadly given extra weight by the recent news that "Mother" McClure passed away in July. A-side "Joy" more than lives up to its' title, offering an uplifting slab of gospel-soul perfection topped off with a sublime lead vocal from McClure. Bandleader Fletcher Washington handles lead vocals on the soulful brilliance of gospel-blues flipside "Somehow (Make a Way)", a track that's every bit as essential as the "A".

Review: David Ruffin's 1977 classic "I Can't Stop The Rain" has carried on being essential throughout the ages. An original copy is still worth much more than it was initially sold for and the Mississippi artist's voice carries as much soul now as it did right back in the Motown heyday. His biggest single takes up the a-side of this new 7" from Expansion and its swooning strings, buttery vocals and rousing and strident groove cannot fail to uplift. "Questions:" on the flip is a little more subdued, with more thoughtful vocals but the whole thing still benefits from superbly rich Philly disco stylings that are golden and glorious.

Review: Hailing from Las Vegas, Johnny Ruiz and the Escapers offer up two sides of haunting group sounds sure to scratch the itches of doo-wop and soul enthusiasts alike. Adorning the a-side is 'Sorry' a stark, creeping, dirge-like ballad with a sparse rhythm track that swings eerily underneath Johnny's sublime lead and the Escapers plaintive harmonies, creating an hypnotic vibe that will have you dropping the needle over and over again. Continuing with the dark vibes but picking up the pace a couple BPMs, 'The Prettiest Girl' brings a measure of hopefulness to the tune, evoking the earnest, lovelorn memories of youth. A must for fans of Nolan Strong and the Diablos Fortune Records output.

Review: Not long after a lovely 7" from Ryusenkei in the form of 'Spring Rain', CMT is back with more beguiling and beautiful sounds from the Japanese artists. As always she mixes up elements of jazz funk, city pop, disco and more next to swooning instrumentals while her delicate voice soars. 'Timemachine Love' has a nice upbeat disco feel and rolling bass that never lets up on on the flip of this special sealer vinyl is 'Rainy Cinderella (radio edit) which is a more slow and sentimental soul sound that has poised bass and melancholic horns.

Review: CMT hits its tenth release and serves up a super sweet 7" featuring a fascinating fusion of sounds from Ryusenkei. The A-side here, 'Spring Rain' is a mix of jazz funk, city pop, disco and plenty more, with lush instrumentals and her own delicate vocals sung in Japanese, though she appears to sing the title in English. On the flip is 'Tokyo Sniper' which is a more slow and sentiment soul sound with neat keys and riffs, lush arps and plenty of rich pianos that frame the vocals - which pair off Ryusenkei with a male response - perfectly.

Review: Izipho Soul once again link up with Sound of Superbad here on a super smooth and seductive funk 7". This one raises the bar even in comparison to the super nice 'I Want Cha' last time out. Chicago-based singer extraordinaire Robert IMtume Owens is the man who offers up his beautifully buttery tones, which are layered over nice classy drums and warm synths, with trumpets and strings all adding ear golden texture. The 'S.O.S. Vibe Mix' on the flip is a heavier jam thanks to the more direct percussion, but with everything else also turned up it's still a super lush tune with those vocals doing plenty of great work.
